Shawlands Arcade is a bit sad looking these days, and the car park is very dark as few of the lights are working.

The original shopping arcade design had a hotel and multistorey carpark along with public toilets and the so-called Shawlands Square area where old folks could sit on benches chatting. The renovation ruined this completely. The jobcentre, hotel, supermarkets and Woolworths are gone, the public space and toilets gone, the shops are boarded up, or charities have set up temporary camp. The only draw now is the Wetherspoon pub, B&M and a 24 hr gym. Pretty sad state of affairs. The half demolished car park is frankly scary. Could do with redevelopment.EDIT: Dec 2021 - well they must have read this review because there are plans to redevelop in two phases. Street level shops and flats behind. Hopefully they will be expensive properties to draw in the rich kids from East Renfrewshire and rival the West End. Shawlands has plenty of affordable housing, it needs rich folk to keep alive the burgeoning cafe scene, the restaurants and the unusual shops. The mistakes of the past (such as Pollokshaws attempt to provide an arcade and social/affordable housingmust not be repeated, with online shopping the norm now, areas need to be developed differently from the past, its a fresh nuanced niche approach that builds on what each area offers already, and spotting the direction of travel - which for Shawlands is to be cooler and more up-market

Historically this was a strange brutalist building that was interesting if not pretty. Then for many years it was unsuccessful with several places vacant. Its nice to see today it fully occupied. It has local shops, small supermarkets, charity shops, a very reasonably priced Witherspoon, and very nice to see some community groups have a space here too. I hope after the future renovation it retains the mix.

Love the pidgeons nesting in the anti-bird nets, the amazing "almost has everything you can imagine at a price you cant believe" (take that how you willhardware shop AND the lovely wee fruit and veg stall - the dude sets up his wares even when its freezing, theres frost and/or snow the ground and the wind howls - total respect. I like both Pounstretcher, B+M, I dig Shaw Trust and to bargain hunt in Iceland .. there is a wee Sainsburys but its an unknown land to super frugal shoppers like me 😁 I hope the council dont give the owners permission to demolish the place - the proposed "improvement" plan sucks and blows big time ... no changes or improvements expected before they bulldoze the place in the name of "progress".

We normally go to the weatherspoon across the road in the arcade. But thought we would try here for a change, We wanted to sit near the front but not at the front near people smoking outside so we found the seats and tables behind a partition wall, We went to sit and the man from behind the bar shouted to find another table as they werent clean, So we found a table at the back, We order our meals and drinks everything was fine my sons like the food, me and my mum were a bit disappointed in out 2 courses for Β£6.99 ( 5 bits of scampi. Also the wait for our dessert was a bit long i had to go ask for it as my son whonhas additional needs was getting a bits restless.

Nothing of interest or value. B&M, Pound Stretcher, Super Drug and a lot of empty or soon to be empty units taken over by local craft initiatives. As far as retail arcades go its poor with very little in the way of social space or interesting small businesses.

A winderful example of late 60s to mid 70s British architecture from what has been espoused as the progressive School of Brutalism. The access from the east is indirect via a long substantial Central European/Cold War style walkway made up primarily of concerte paving stones - a rudimentary pre-formed surface water drain was installed to the front elevated walkway, unfit for purposed and badly neglected from day one.Approaching from the west is an original rather daunting flight of stairs (carefully neglectedconsisting of a substantial square section extruded aluminium slatted handrail and a matching flight of steel reinforced pre-formed steps - nice!Front elevation is reminiscent of the Hugo Frederick Zukov designed Peoples Hall in Karkeiv which recently attracted the attention of an artillery battalion of the Russian Federation, it echoed many popular Soviet era designs, having a wide V shaped slopping roof line to the front elevation - examples of which can be found in the book "Exploring Post War Soviet and Central European Architecture" (section III shape, style and formby Anton Gregorovitc, out of print since 1983. Wheelchair friendlyaccess is via a Z shaped paved approach of matching design and materials which terminates at the top of the steel reinforced concrete stairs outlined above.Central access is via another sloped paved concrete walkway running west to east, its terminus being noticably offset to the right of the central plaza/concourse area. The buildings centre is roofed similar to the design of the Detroit Municiple transit hub circa 1977, high and wide steel trusses having framed glazed roof lights running south to north forming an impressive but largely un-purposed plaza zone.Various established retail outlets and a somewhat eclectic range of local crafts/leisure pursuits are well represented - everything from a stain glass workshop, a health gym, a fitness studio, two charity shops, 3 food retailers a huge and impressively stocked hardware store, fashion and beauty supplier, two banks, a pharmacist and a very popular public house. The rear of the site contains two car parks one an open dual deck fesign and the other a multi story covered parking - to the north east are very well maintained social housing units, and three larger retail units all currently occupied - one of which is a well run childrens kindergarten and soft play centre.Sadly in 1 years time - after many years of careful neglect and a lack of any substantial maintainence/improvement - this well loved landmark building will be lost when the site is to be improved" by demolition and redevelopment.Local residents have voiced their growimg disquiet at a percieved lack of meaningful dialogue and consultation with the parties and agents involved regarding proposef substantial variances to the initial proposal.

Meh. Old, archaic, dilapidated. A neds paradise in the MAXWELLS bar. The underclass mingle in their version of social distancing, which involves tattooed neerdowells remonstrating wildly, centimeters from their friends face, in an act of modern alpha male grandstanding.Cheap beer tho so enjoy the circus on your no frills night out.

Run down, empty units. A shameful waste of civic space that the council ought to be doing something about. The previous old carbuncle arcade had more personality.

A shopping centre in name only. Since its opening, it has never been successful - primarily due to the excellent choice of shops on the main road. The area has lost most of its variation of shops with an everly increasing number of food/cafΓ© bars. Excellent 2 hour free parking in the Arcade car park which helps enormously, the ever suffering shopper.

There is 2 hrs free parking in the carpark there. The car park is badly laid out with columns. Its gloomy but free! The arcade is ok with some shops & stalls. There is a selection of places to eat across from the arcade. Its a bit of a ghost town just now due to covid.

Normally so good , but this morning no checkouts on!! Had a fully trolley for my mum, had to try put it all through self check out!! It was nearly impossible that size of shop in small area! Machine kept stopping!! Assistant spent her whole time running to fix machines with no social distance. Had she been behind the cash desk, she would have been safe behind the screen and more customers would have been served faster and safer!! It wasnt her fault, bad management this morning!!

I like the arcade. Its nostalgic for me but some of the shops are pretty decent too. Great wee hardwear store at the very back which literally sells everything and anything. Full of gym buffs these days all tanked up on protein shakes, buzzing cause they can get a gym membership for like 10p a year. The framers is a great store too which has done well to survive this long. Used their services a few times.

One of many not big shopping centers. Physically it is not big but they have a large selection of goods. Restaurants and cafes, shops on various topics. If you do not want to go to the city price during rush hours because there is a problem with parking or too many people, then this place will be an alternative for such people.
