Contemporary aquarium with local & exotic marine life & long, glass-enclosed underwater walkways.
Amazing place. So many species of marine life.
Nice aquarium in “downtown” Pudong right across the river from the Bund, immediately behind the Pearl Tower. This is a great aquarium for kids. It has a changing special exhibition area on the 3rd floor that changes frequently .It has fish and water creatures from China and from several other continents including South America, Australia, Antarctica, and Africa. One of the highlights is a long underwater tunnel in which several species of rays, fish, and sharks swim over your head.Almost all of the signs in the aquarium are in Chinese and English. The jellyfish room is almost serene (as they’re behind glass!and the accompanying music and lighting for the various tanks was perfectly chosen. We underestimated how much the kids would like it and we were there more than twice as long as we planned. Nice aquarium-themed gift shop on the way out.
They have a decent collecion of Fish,Sharks, Turtles, Rays & Jelly Fish species, not forgetting the Seals & the Penguins. Feeding times actually make no difference unless you actually like seeing people feeding them, the Penguin compartment i thought was the worst and needs maintenance asap looks all worn out, the best part is always the shark cove and that made it worth visiting being so close to the sharks, lasts just over an hour to see everything. Isnt a must do attraction
The place will be exciting for children and not much difference for elders. The glass tube walk was the highlight.
Definitely a must-do place when visiting Shanghai
Its awesome and life time moment to come across diverse array of aquatic animals.Beautifully organized every thing. Specially, artificial habitat for penguins is extremely good. This time will surely be far more important than paying just around 200yuans.
It is located in Pudong district next to The Oriental Pearl. Very nice educational adventureThe aquarium consists of 10 zones exhibiting the life water creatures from all over the world. the ticket is around 22 USDYou can enjoy feeding sessions of some creatures such as penguins and sharks.. check the schedule
There are a lot of different sea natures I hope to repeat the visit again
Extremely awesome place. Entry fees are costly but it worths. You can see hundreds of types of fishes so closely. Best experience was to see shark so close. Well maintained. Service are good. Lightning and music gives awesome experience. Will be wonderful experience. Must be in bucket list.
Big aquarium but I was expecting something bigger
Though its a bit old, there are a lot of varieties of fishes. Worth spending a few hours with kids.
This was the least pleasurable aquarium experience for me not because the aquarium itself is bad, but because all of the other customers there were really loud and annoying. It was extremely cramped in there and you can’t turn back once you start going down the tunnel so sorry if you feel claustrophobic like I did.
Great place for making a pause during Shanghai sightseeing. Crowded, but with plenty of varius types sea animals species.
Although it is really crowded, it worth visiting. Jely fishes are amazing.
Crocodiles, puffer fish, seahorse, manta ray and sharks. Oceanview from elevator and tunnel. Great concept. But feels mediocre.
This place is interesting and has many fish.
Saw more people than fish. Went there a Sunday afternoon, well didnt enjoy much of the sight seeing. Chinese with poor attitude packed in front of the windows so couldnt see much. A lot of yelling so I suggest you equip of earplugs if you want to get out without being deaf. Otherwise a nice amount of fish and marine life. Would have been nice in an educated country.
Impressive collection! Worth visiting despite the entrance fee is pretty high - ¥160 ($23).
If you like fish, then youd love this place! Not too tough for the foreigners who cant read and speak Chinese. For us, the amazing highlights were saw fish, huge and creepy eels, spider crabs, stingrays, penguins and the shark area. The beautifully lit place for Jelly fish was also very well designed. Since this is an indoor place, if it gets crowded, its not fun. I would suggest to pick a weekday to visit. Also it closes at 6:30 so its best to reach well before that. There is a food court at the exit that serves fast food as well. The staff is very helpful and considerate (we forgot our bag and it was almost closed but they helped me take a full round of the place to find it). Great place to visit if you have kids!
A small aquarium but worth every minute (though this could be because I am extremely fascinated by animals). The jellyfish was absolutely captivating. I think most of the animals are well-taken care of but I have to dock a couple of stars because of the small enclosures for some of the bigger animals, like the sawfish who was visibly distressed. It was amazing being able to see it up close, but I much rather it be free than to be in such a tiny space. There could also be more staff members around to control the crowd. Some tourists (who can clearly read Englishalso couldnt seem to read the signs and continued using flash photography but there wasnt any staff around to stop them. Parents also let their children bang against the glass of the penguins enclosure and that seriously annoyed me, especially since there werent any staff to tell them off. Strangely though, the penguins seemed to enjoy the attention and actually appeared to be entertaining or interacting with the children through the glass. But thats no excuse for the behaviour of the visitors, which could have been improved if the aquarium had better controls.
Quite nice aquarium at a reasonable price to enter. Is a bit busy with some narrow paths. Has wide range of fish including some penguins which have feeding shows. Selection of rare and endangered species is worth a stop. Has a number of walk through tunnels so you can see fish all through. Ok gift and cafe shop at end.
Quite good, with a wide variety of sealife and thoughtful layout. Theres an impressive viewing tunnel which is billed as one of the longest in the world. Some of the tanks seemed a bit run down, but on the whole, everything is well-maintained. Definitely a worthwhile destination for families. Its also right next to the Shanghai Pearl Tower and a couple of major malls, so you could probably spend an entire day in this neighborhood.
188cm might be too tall for the water tunnels, but theyre still cool to see with your head tilted at an angle. Lensing gives it a nice magnifying effect. Day I went there were divers cleaning the gravel which was something
Shanghai Ocean Aquarium consists of two pyramid-shaped buildings - a main building and an annexe. The covered area is 20,500 square meters (about 263,910 square feet). As well as the large exhibition area, there is a gift shop and a restaurant that can seat 300 persons. The main building is divided into different exhibition zones: China Zone, South America Zone, Australia Zone, Africa Zone, Southeast Asia Zone, Cold Water Zone, Polar Zone, Sea and Shore, Deep Ocean Zone and Special Exhibitions. The exhibits include more than 300 types and 15,000 water creatures and rare fishes, such as poison dart frogs, jellyfishes, moonfish, leafy sea dragons and emperor penguins.Currently, this is the only aquarium in the world to have a China Zone. This zone specializes in exhibiting aquatic organisms and ecology of the Yangtze valley as well as some endangered aquatic species in China. Most creatures in this zone are under national protection such as the Chinese sturgeon, mullet, Yangtze alligator and giant salamander. The Ocean Aquarium also displays the geography and culture of their native places by pictures, voices, etc. Overall the aquarium provides visitors with a tour covering the worlds five Continents and four Oceans.Shanghai Ocean Aquarium is located in Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone in Pudong District and is adjacent to the famous Oriental Pearl Tower and Jin Mao Tower. One of the largest ocean aquariums in the world, it has the worlds longest submarine viewing tunnel measuring 155 meters (about 170 yardsin length.
Variety of fishers.Located next to the Oriental Pearl Tower in Shanghais bustling financial district of Lujiazui, Shanghai Ocean Aquarium (SOAis the largest aquarium in Shanghai, and one of the biggest in Asia.Spanning 20,500 square metres, SOA is home to more than 15,000 marine animals comprising of 450 unique species from five continents and four oceans. The SOA ‘around the world’ underwater journey begins at the Yangtze River in China, before moving on to the amazing flooded forests of the Amazon in South America. Around the corner, find yourselves in the mangroves and billabongs of Australia before meandering through the ancient rivers of Africa. Rounding off this amazing underwater world tour, visitors can view the worlds first “China Zone”, housing endangered Chinese aquatic animals from the Yangtze River, along with the longest underwater viewing tunnel in the world, where marine animals swim right above visitors’ heads.
Very nice and well lit aquarium. The tunnel passages are amazing but not always adapted to tall people so watch your head ! Virtually all signs are in both Chinese and English, which is super helpful.Went on a Saturday in March and the aquarium wasnt crowded by Chinese standards. Do keep in mind that the visitors tend to be very enthusiastic and will not hesitate to shove you a little bit to see their favorite water-denizen in its natural habitat !
Nice and all for those who have not experienced the tunnel type aquarium. However the whole journey through the aquarium is very short. Plus its extremely squeezy with all the rude Chinese locals/tourist pushing you out of the way to get to the attractions they want to see. They kinda ignore the fact that you are looking at these attractions too. Overall disappointing experience.
Good place for the kids to enjoy. Extremely crowded.
A great time for friends or alone! Lots of exhibits and details in both English and Chinese. Three floors and the largest underwater tunnel in an aquarium in the world. Definitely a "Top 10" thing to do while in Shanghai.
Nice Aquarium and museum to learn all about sea animal...Good Job
Was ok neat treadmill to run you through the long aquarium tube slowly. You cannot turn around once through a section so if you want to see feedings you must stay to watch the feeding and not go down escalator until you are done with that section.
Lovely place but quite expensive though!
Kids enjoyed the visit, but never ask to go back.
Cramped, unclean and overpriced. I suggest giving this one a miss.
Needs more natural planting and some fish could do with larger tanks but what is there is very clean and fish look healthy. Very good variety
nice place for sunday outing
Penguins, sharks, rays and too many other fish to mention all displayed with signs in english. A moving sidewalk keeps the patrons moving along at a decent pace but not too fast to get a good view of all the fish. It should take less than 2 hours to complete the whole thing.
A good place to visit with children , but its too crowded shen I visited.
Its a pretty decent aquarium with interesting fish that I havent seen back in America. The tunnel with all the fish is long but actually made me feel motion sickness. Im not much of a museum person or in this case an aquarium or zoo person.
Very nice aquarium. Signs both English and Chinese. I like that there are multiple times you have tunnels where the fish are above you...especially the last one, which is 150 meters long and has a moving walkway so it doesnt get clogged with people. Also the jellyfish tanks are amazing.
A very nice aquarium where you can walk under the exhibition of fish. They also offer sleepovers at times, so the kids can admire the fish at night.
A great aquarium with lots of fish and other marine creatures. Signs are both in Chinese and in English, so no worries about not be able to read about the things you look at.The best time is to visit this place on normal weekdays. On weekends you might have to wait in line to se some of the bigger animals and fishes in the aquarium.
Pretty nice, educational, there are gorgeous jellyfish!
I came to visit this aquarium when it had just opened. Everything was new, clean, spotless. As a young child, this was the best aquarium I had been to at the time. The atmosphere of the exhibits was quite magical.
Generally there are shows on each day, maybe because i went on a weekday entrancr told no shows that day.. nice aquarium with glass tunnel ect.... ticket is around 120 per person..
I was a different experience. I didnt have it in the plan, but we decided to go get in.I like you go through tunnels surrounding by the fishes and different sea animals, even I must say it made me a little bit nervous. I enjoyed it pretty much.It has two floors and the negative part is once you get the stairs down... there is no way back, so you better look at the whole floor before you go downstairs.
Here is the run down this place needs some supervision there were people sitting in front of the exhibits eating there food they brought into the location and made it very unpleasant impossible to enjoy the fish exhibits. I dont recommend this place by any meansPS dont expect your money back
Too many people during the visit were inside. it is absolutly impossible to see any thing. Open ocean looks very nice and probably would be a great expiriance but again no chance to see it in the full beauty because of the crowd... I felt as a sardine. Everything else... i saw better!
Its an aquarium. A very large aquarium. The Shanghai Aquarium shows you all the major global regions where underwater wildlife can be found. While they dont have every single sea creature on our planet (or any from the deep ocean such as anglerfish), they do have an impressive collection nonetheless. While some of it is a bit dilapidated and some of the fish/sharks/mammals look like they could use a friend, most of the exhibits are very well thought out and the English translations make sense. For an additional nominal fee, you can rent an audio guide (available in many languages such as German and English).Other than dealing with the crowds, the aquarium is a nice way to get out of the heat on a summer day and meander for a few hours. Well, you cant meander very far because of how they designed the aquarium (one way only with limited back tracking). Finally, the Shanghai Aquarium boasts the longest tunnel tube/moving walkway exhibit. Essentially you move along on a moving walkway through a long stretch of tube underneath an aquarium display.
It was absolutely so squishy and felt like that you were meant to see people instead of fish.It was the worst out of all of my experiences of a aquarium and also very expensive.
