Izakaya-style dining for Japanese comfort food in a relaxed, bi-level setting with a counter bar.
I had been waiting to come to Shack-Fuyu for a while. We walked in at 6:30pm and easily got a table at the bar; However, at 7pm the bar seats were full and the restaurant seating area was all booked out. I enjoyed my aubergine bun and prawn sandwich, I do wish the sandwich had more sauce. My partner said his pork bun was sensational, and his beef rice was really good but not outstanding. This is a swish restaurant, which I think would be a great date option. The food is served quickly though, so maybe not for a long candlelight dinner.
Food was nice but I only got a couple of the smaller plates. Pound for pound you can get more for your money elsewhere however the atmosphere was great and food was acceptable.
Good place and delicious food options available. We only had some starters as we were not too hungry. Bit pricier than usual but good food options available. There is only one desert available on the menu. The service was excellent and the ambiance is good aswell.
Really delicious Korean fried wings, kimchi hot Stone fried rice and tacos! The Kinako French toast indeed didnt disappoint, it was just sweet enough, with the matcha soft serve it was perfect! The only thing I wouldnt order again are the salmon and tuna tacos, they werent exactly what I enjoyed eating because it felt a little weird to have raw fish in tacos but this is just my personal opinion. Its definitely on the pricey side so probably wouldnt come often but its a good place for either dates or work dinners.
Food - 5/5Service - 5/5Ambience - 4/5Cost - 4/5Could not really fault the food. Salmon tacos were nice and moreish, the calamari was well seasoned, not oily, perfectly cooked; the pork bao buns were tender and probably the best bao buns I have had. The chicken katsu sando is worth the try, I didn’t enjoy it as much as the bao bun or taco but I would still very much recommend. The french toast was nice and the ice cream is almost a palate cleanser, it goes nicely and is a great way to end the meal.Unfortunately the mocktail I wanted wasn’t available but the substitute was refreshing; not overly sweet, and it went well with the meal. The service was great; fast, friendly, polite and experienced - no complaints. The ambience is fine, it does feel a little crowded and narrow in parts but it’s a nice, “chilled” place to have dinner; it’s not very loud so you don’t need to shout across the tables during dinner.I will say that the menu is slightly overpriced. You can easily spend £50pp here which is not bad but some portions are a bit small given the cost (eg the chicken wings serving = 3 / bao bun serving = 1).Would recommend every item I tried and I’ll be back to try more. Definitely worth the visit!
Good food, the salmon bao was really greatThe dessert was nice but perhaps over hyped, while the French toast and matcha soft serve were both good on their own, they didn’t seem to complement each other too wellAnd it was extremely loud at the restaurant
Overall, a good experience but slightly underwhelming given the hype around this place. None of the savory dishes we ordered blew us away. The lamb bao buns were awkward; lamb is served as a stew which has way too much liquid for a bao bun.The main highlight was hands down the French Toast dessert, which is incredible and won me over despite not having a sweet tooth. It’s a busy spot so recommend booking in advance.
The service was great, the staff were attentive and quick. However the food is more asian fusion rather than Japanese. It is advertised as Japanese comfort food but there is food from many asian countries.I ordered a katsu sando and the bread was quite dry and not soft like Japanese milk bread is supposed to be.
Awesome. Everything was excellent. Rabbit curry, beef, starters, famous dessert, toast with ice cream. Oh my gosh… Absolutely gorgeous food. I can’t wait to visit the restaurant again.Thank you, Shack-Fuyu
Ive heard about this place mostly from the Off Menu Podcast. It exceeded my expectations, not just the food, but the atmosphere & really lovely staff too. The price is a bit more than Id usually spend, but its all really well made, & incredibly tasty. And their one & only dessert is famous for a reason, its so good!!!! I will be going back many times to work my way through the menu & have that french toast again.
Great service and excellent food. Rare 5 stars from me. We tried many items off the menu and they were all well prepared, perfectly seasoned and packed full of flavour. Stand out for me was the pulled lamb and pork steamed buns. I wish they were closer to my area so I could go there all the time :)
This place absolutely lives up to its reputation. The Tasting Menu is hearty and well worth it. Worth knowing that it also nut-free
Really REALLY like Shack-Fuyu. The menu is awesome, we chose not to do the set tasting menu and kind of made our own, and had no regrets. Some really varied and awesome dishes on the menu, and great cocktails too. Highly recommend the wings and the matcha soft serve dessert is mind blowing. Nice vibe inside and great service
This was nice. We got the tasting menu and everything was quite good. Although we are vegetarian and two dishes came out with meet even though we flagged it. The pairing was nice as well. Everything seemed a bit rushed but the food was nice. I really liked the peppers and the French toast dessert!
I needed a light snack before a show. The sando was very tasty but I need to shout out the matcha soft serve french toast. It was very tasty. The right balance of moist and slight crunch. Id definitely come back to try other items but still get the french toast to finish
I’m glad I tried Shack Fuyu Soho, it was delicious Japanese-inspired bites including their famous matcha soft ice cream French toast which is REALLY worth the hype, even if you don’t eat sweets. It was busy on a Sunday afternoon and we hadn’t booked but we enjoyed our Greek hostess at the bar who was friendly and warm, just like the rest of the staff. Try it!
Been wanting to try this place for a while - I enjoyed the Sando and wagyu beef but the service was slow, even though it was lunchtime and there was only 3 tables seated
Would I go again - yes! I would pick this place over bone daddies ramen place any day.Atmosphere: cute half booths down one side with a bottles wall. Industrially elegant .Staff: friendly, helpful & patient (Asian family that decides what u order while the waitress is waiting…! #lovefamily. Thanks Libby :).Food: sea bass ceviche - delicious and not over-citrus. Wagyu beef - tender and delicious. Tuna taco - soft tuna.Must order French toast desert that is crispy and matcha ice cream compliments well. Miso aubergine - if u like these, order it. Salmon Bao - can leave as I like my salmon undercooked and this was well cooked.Drinks: negroni - quite nice. Sake - ordered the yummy Junmai Daiginjo.
Loved it!!! The dessert is magical. Fried rice amazing. Will surely be coming back. The only thing was... Frozen margherita wasnt even cold 🤣
Absolutely wonderful service, food and atmosphere. Really loved dining here with my partner on the weekend. We felt relaxed and at ease. The food was outstanding and reasonably priced. The dessert was phenomenal and were looking forward to our next visit a lot.
Amazing service and food, I was running 5 minutes late and the staff were really nice and accommodating. The french toast dessert was honestly the best I have had before!
A cool Asian fusion (mostly Korean and Japaneserestaurant at the busy soho and China town area.We had about 4-5 dishes to share. The beef, aubergine and bibimpak were really nice. The bill came out about £30 / per person.Think it might be better off to try the tasting menu. Will do this in the next visit. The interior is modern and spacious. We visited around 2pm on Sunday. The restaurant wasn’t too busy and we were able to choose where to sit.
A buzzy restaurant with quick service. My friend recommended the dessert many times so we decided to come for dinner. Thoroughly enjoyed the Padrón peppers and the dessert. The rice dishes were ok, we ordered kimchi hot stone rice and veggie katsu curry. The veggie katsu are nicely made, but the curry is not as flavoursome as it could be. Aubergine bao bun is good, but I’ve had better bao buns in many other places. I LOVE the dessert and would definitely come back for that, probably won’t be too bothered about dinner here.
Fantastic spot for Japanese comfort food in the heart of SoHo. Everything we tried from the Small Plates menu was fantastic, with the Korean Fried Wings, Katsu Chicken Sando and Pork Boa Buns being particularly good. Staff were very friendly and accommodating, and the atmosphere was cosy and inviting. It can be a little on the expensive side, but they have a great tasting menu and deals. Highly recommend.
A lot of interest options on the menu.Enjoyed the chicken wings a lot, ceviche was also nice, salmon fillet was just ok, beef fillet slightly better.Weird that you need to order the lunch menu for a whole table and cannot go for regular menu options, waiter didn’t know to say why.
We stumbled into this place on a whim....Best decision ever! The service 10 out of 10 and dont even get me started on how insanely tasty the food was. All I can say is go go go. Its super popular so best to book or do as we did and eat at the bar.
Korean fried chicken wings are amazing, best wings I have tasted. The calamari was also well seasoned and crispy. The chicken sandwich is a show stopper, the brioche is super buttery and rich though. Highly recommend
The dessert was great, but the other dishes were underwhelming. Squid was too salty, sando was dry. The waiter shoved us our bill as soon as we finished our meal without our request (and without even asking if we wanted something else..while there are other empty tables and certainly no people waiting outside. So if you want to try the dessert go ahead but I cannot recommend anything else much.
Came here for the Kinako french toast and it did not disappoint. It was delicately sweet and the matcha soft serve was smooth and not bitter but very flavourful. Will definitely come back again for this, and next time, I’m not sharing! 😜 The guy who served us was also super friendly and helpful.
For starters, we had the Korean fried chicken which was pretty average. The rabbit Katsu curry was very good, it was large enough for 2 people to share. The breading on the Katsu was really nice - it was crispier and crunchier than expected. The Katsu sando meat was very tender but I wasn’t a fan of the bread. The kinako french toast was extremely nice, the balance of the slightly bitter and earthy ice cream and the sweetness of the toast complemented each other perfectly. I would highly recommend having their dessert.
We randomly stumbled across this place because it didnt look too packed but definitely a great find. Had a few smaller plates to share, especially the iberico Sandos and tuna tacos were delicious! Service could have been better
5 stars for service, food, atmosphere, one of the best restaurants I have ever been to. Even though they were short on staff today the service was still excellent and we still got our food served quickly. The iberico sando sandwich was amazing and although I was scared to try the aubergine it was also very flavorful. We had the beef chili rice bowl which was great to share and the shrimp toast is a must try. We finished with the Kinako French toast and I would recommend ordering one each because it was so delicious I didn’t want to share! The hot French toast is a great blend with the soft serve matcha ice cream. Would definitely recommend and I will for sure be coming back :)
Came for the green tea ice cream french toast and was not disappointed. Very yummy. But it gets a little heavy as it’s a large portion so it is shareable (or maybe not because I had to whole thing to myself). Would go back again just for the dessert
Our expectations were probably too high. Lovely service but felt like the taste could have been kicked up a notch on most things. Our favourite dish we tried was the pulled lamb with buns small plate.
Excellent food. The veggie fried rice was very well-seasoned and was so tasty. I think this is the best fried rice I’ve had while eating out. The french toast is a must-try dessert. The bread is warm and the toast texture pairs well with the soft matcha. It was a good dinner experience and will definitely come back to try more vegetarian items on the menu!
Have only ever been here for the Kinako toast but decided I would try dinner here instead.Chilli beef hot stone rice (£10.25was very bland - I couldn’t bring myself to finish it. Expect a light sprinkling of the beef - with the only saviour being the seaweed and shiitake mushroom that came on top. Came across several good reviews for this dish alone but was severely disappointed - perhaps it didn’t live up to my southeast Asian tastebuds. The crispy fried squid (not picturedwas extremely salty, as was the yuzu kosho mayo.Overall: restaurant subpar at best. Stick to the dessert and save your money. Far better Asian/Asian fusion restaurants next door at Chinatown.
I ordered the beef hot stone rice, and it was delicious. The portion size was good. The Kinako Toast was also good. The guy who attended to me was really sweet and attentive. He asked whether I had any allergies and kept checking back to see if everything was great. I will definitely return next time I am in London.
We had a great lunch here! The miso aubergine dish was our favourite. The staff were super accommodating, they managed to fit us in without a reservation and were very friendly. Definitely worth a visit :)
I see this place a lot on Instagram. It’s been on my list for a while and an occasion suited the bill - a fun lunch out that is relatively cheap as far as Soho goes. If I’m being real, it was average. I didn’t get the hype about their matcha ice cream and french toast. The beef tataki was lacking in flavour. The Katsu sando was lovely to be fair. There’s many better places to go, but maybe try it yourself! (@diningnotdashing)
The prawn and chicken katsu sandwiches are out of this world! I could have eaten 2-3 on my own. Yuzu margarita was great. The star of the show though is the French toast with matcha soft serve. Come for that alone!
Was highly recommended toThis place by a client of mine. Due to my experience, I shall be passing that recommendation onwards and onwards .Isn’t it nice when you speak to waiter that does into detail happily about any item on the menu? Especially when it’s your first time, tried rabbit for the first time and it was lovely, all Of the food was excellent to be fair, well priced and excellent service and hospitality by Sebastian! I hope the manager is aware of such awesome staff
Legitimately top 5 place to eat in London.Update: went again and the experience was just as amazing. Definitely my favourite place in London :).Id definitely recommend the spicy soy edamame, fried squid, any of the bao buns, and the SUKIYAKI STYLE WAGYU BEEF, and the lychee martini. You wont regret it.Looking forward to coming back!
Service was great. Did take 10 mins to get their attention to pay and leave but we were only there for dessert which was very nice, however the peanut powder on the French toast is very overpowering and so might not be to everyone’s taste!
Delightful food! The beef fillet with bernaise sauce was a highlight, as was the iberico pork katsu sandwich. The only slight downside(?!is that the food was served incredibly quickly. Whilst thats ordinarily not a problem, we intended on having a long catch up in the restaurant but all food was served within minutes of ordering and we were in and out of the restaurant in 40 mins, which made it feel more like a fast food experience. Will definitely return for the food though!
Booked a table for 3 on Friday night for dinner. 2hr limit. The food was delicious!!! I enjoyed everything we ordered. We decided to order lots of plates - small and large - and just share everything. My favourites: Prawn toast - light and tasty, chicken wings, salmon boa buns, tuna taco and kimchi. Chicken Sando sandwich was large and impressive, very buttery but there are much more flavourful items on the menu. Im not a fan of ceviche but it tasted ok, broccoli was also suprising tasty. kimchi rice bowel was very filling. I love macha and French toast - realllly enjoyed the dessert!!! Food comes out when it is ready not at the same time, it was slightly difficult to get the waitresses attention.
Was excited to try this restaurant but it was quite underwhelming. The taste of the food was okay, although I did like the Kim chi and padrón peppers. I did also feel a bit restricted with the menu as a vegetarian. There were a good number of options from the smaller plates but not in mains. I wouldn’t visit this restaurant again
A very relaxed, vibrant place that is very popular. The aubergine (with miso, bubu ararewas sweet and melt in the mouth, with an almost caramel flavour to it due to the miso. The Korean fried wings (with spicy sour sauce, sesamewere insanely delicious (if a little messy, I needed about 3 wipes!). Some of the best wings Ive ever had. YOU MUST TRY THEM.Im not usually a squid fan, but the crispy fried squid (with black pepper, lemon, red chillies, yuzu kosho mayowere also amazing, so moreish. We also tried the Prawn toast ("masquerading as okonomiyaki"which was well cooked and flavoured, with katsuobushi flakes giving it a nice umami, salty seasoning. The Chashu pork bao bun was delicious, the sweet spicy soy and kimchee really made this stand out. The pork was tender and melted in the mouth and balance of sweetness and spice was perfect. The only disappointing dishes were the 2 sandos we ordered (the rabbit katsu and Iberic katsu sandos). They were pretty dry and also the bread was quite greasy. Overall they didnt have much flavour. Its a shame as one of the main reasons we visited was for the sandos! To finish we had the Kinako French toast with soft serve, matcha flavoured ice cream, which did not disappoint. It was very nice indeed. Melt in the mouth toast with oozy, soft ice cream which wasnt too heavy on the matcha flavour. The service was pretty quick and attentive. All in all a pleasurable visit and I would definitely go again.
I’d seen this spot doing the rounds and when shared by a friend, I decided it was time to indulge. This was the kinako french toast with matcha ice cream. I’m lost for words to describe how phenomenal the toast was. It’s as if they marinaded the bread in egg mixture over night; it was incredibly gooey and soft and fluffy, and beautifully contrasted the powdery-caramelised outside which was analogous to creme brûlée. The matcha ice cream was firm yet smooth, but had a slight matcha-after taste which I do not particularly adore. However, they did complement one another. The staff serving was super friendly and hospitable, but the table was not clean (which was a shame). If you’re around London and want to experience unrivalled french toast (yes, far superior to Christopher’s), you have no excuse to come to Shack-Fuyu. 8/10.
Fantastic food here!We had a selection of small plates and one large plate between us as we couldnt decide. This was the best decision- we would definitely recommend doing this to get a taste of many different things.Brilliant service in a central location in the heart of Soho.
Just amazing, awesome atmosphere and really chilled. Staff were great, quick and helpful. We got the tasting menu and it was amazing, the miso aubergine and the macha French toast were absolutely delicious. Will be back for the toast!
