Meydan, Mimar Sinan Cd., 22020 Edirne Merkez/Edirne, Turkey, Khaskovo
Vast, striking Ottoman imperial mosque dating to ca. 1575, with soaring 71m minarets & a grand dome.
Very beautiful mosque and Edirne’s most iconic attraction, unfortunately it’s under restoration and maintenance so don’t bother coming a long way for it, but surely after the restoration is over it’ll once again show its magnificent beauty to everyone.
It is not suitable time to visit in July 2022. Still under reconstruction/restoration, so so not possible to see inside of the masterpiece and some minarets.
Masterpiece of the mosque 🕌 architecture!

Impressive mosque. Beautiful.
Amazing architecture lesson from Mimar Sinan, the genious man of Ottoman Empire. It is built for Yavuz Sultan Selim (Father of Sultan Suleymen, magneficient). There is also Areste (Mosque marketoutside the mosque building. You can see Selimiye from almost all points of Edirne.
It is a magnificent place with its architecture and historical texture. Youve gotta see.
Quite a sizeable mosque and well worth the visit. Driving from Sofia, Bulgaria to Istanbul this was a perfect area to stop and explore overnight. Both the mosque and grounds were lovely. There is a sizable markets the bottom side of the mosque. Paid parking available nearby.
Unique masterpiece by the grand architect Sinan whom legends say might be the Bulgarian Master Manol. 3rd biggest mosque. Full of history and vibrant culture and colours. A definite must see in Edirne (Odrin).
The Selimiye is the greatest of all the Ottoman mosque complexes, the apogee of an art form and the culmination of a life’s ambition for its architect, Sinan. Built on a slight hill, the mosque is a prominent landmark. Its complex includes a medrese, housing the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts, a school and the Kavaflar Arasta, a covered bazaar. Selim II commissioned the mosque. It was begun in 1569 and completed in 1575, a year after his death. The dome was Sinan’s proudest achievement. In his memoirs, he wrote: “With the help of Allah and the favour of Sultan Selim Khan, I have succeeded in building a cupola six cubits wider and four cubits deeper than that of Haghia Sophia.” In fact, the dome is comparable in diameter and slightly shallower than the building Sinan had so longed to surpass.Ablutions FountainIntricate, pierced carving decorates the top of the 16-sided open şadırvan (ablutions fountain), which stands in the centre of the courtyard. The absence of a canopy helps to retain the uncluttered aspect.MinaretsThe mosque’s four slender minarets tower to a height of 84 m (275 ft). Each one has three balconies. The two northern minarets contain three intertwining staircases, each one leading to a different balconyDomeThe 43 m (141 ftdome dominates the interior of the mosque. Not even the florid paintwork the original 16thcentury decoration underwent restoration in the 19th century detracts from its effect.Sultan’s LogeThe imperial loge is supported on green marble columns. They are connected by pointed arches; whose surrounds are adorned with floral İznik tiles. Unusually, its ornately decorated mihrab contains a shuttered window, which opened on to countryside when the mosque was builtThe InteriorThe mosque is the supreme achievement of Islamic architecture. Its octagonal plan allows for a reduction in the size of the buttresses supporting the dome. This permitted extra windows to be incorporated, making the interior exceptionally light.
Astoundingly beautiful mosk, open to the public. Modest clothing is required. If you have any doubts about appropriate attire ask at the door. People are friendly and will help you out.The mosks story is featured Elif Shafaks book the Architects apprentice, although in the book the Architect is portrayed as Indian where in fact he was of Bulgarian origin.
No matter where you look at it from, this masterpiece of history is a must-visit if you have a path with Edrine on it. It is huge, it is at a perfect location, it is doing its functions still.
It was perfect to see Mimar Sinans master piece. Right next to the mosque, there is a big parking lot which you can keep your car safely and not expensive. Also from mosque garden there is direct entrance to old bazaar which is under the mosque. Also you can walk most of the other touristic places and nice restaurants. Also next-door to parking there is factory store for famous Kavala Almond cookies🍪🍪

The mosque was built by the architect Sinan, commissioned by Sultan Selim II. Built in the 16th century. The mosque is Sultans. The plan looks like a Byzantine church. Sinan uses new construction methods typical of all mosques built after Selimie. There are several museums to the mosque. It is a symbol of the rise of the Ottoman Empire.

A UNESCO world heritage site and architectural masterpiece for the big open space on the inside. Be sure to follow the customs, remove your shoes before stepping on the carpet and inside, wear clothes that go beyond your shoulders and knees and women wear a headscarf. Also a nice surrounding area with various museums and a bazaar, and very close to the town centre.

Very nice place. Beautiful, gorgeous!
One of the masterpieces of the great architect Mimar Sinan. İ came all the way from istanbul just to see this masterpiece, and I was definitely awed by it. The mosque has a huge dome that isnt supported by any pillars inside, which by itself is praiseworthy. The sheer size of the mosque also show wonders.
One of the best mosque Ive ever seen.
This is a "must see" location in Edirne. Constructed by well known Ottoman architect "Mimar Sinan" for Selim the Second. Sinan finished construction when he was 90 and called this mosque as "My mastership work".
Most amazingly beautiful mosque. From the moment I saw it from distance I felt very excited and as I got closer and entered my heart was trembling and I was lost for words. One can feel and breathe history here.
