20 Upper Ground, South Bank, London SE1 9PD, Azul
Set in the cruise ship-inspired Sea Containers House overlooking the River Thames, this ultra-chic hotel in the vibrant South Bank district is a 9-minute walk from the Tate Modern art gallery and 6 minutes' walk from Southwark tube station.Stylish rooms with custom furnishings and original art feature flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi, plus rainfall showers. Upgraded rooms add patios and/or river views. Suites come with sitting areas or living rooms, while an upgraded suite has a dining room and a wet bar. There's a glamorous restaurant, a luxe rooftop lounge and a sleek bar. Other amenities include an elegant spa and a 24/7 gym.
Imagine our disappointment. To celebrate my fiancée’s birthday I booked a night at the Sea Containers. We arrived at our room to find that it was designed for wheelchair and disabled use. Alas, we don’t have time to try and change the room as we had a table booked at the bar. When challenged on this matter the following morning, the hotel offered no compensation and simply stated that the hotel was full so some guests had to be allocated those rooms. That is not good enough. At the very least, a guest should be told at check in that that was the situation and given the choice whether to take the room or not. Very disappointing and a special night sadly undermined.
Lovely hotel. Great location and really friendly staff. Definitely recommend
The staff couldnt be more helpful! The rooms were very clean and tidy, wish I stayed longer to be honest
Amazing decor and view of the river. Very chique and interesting colour schemes. The decor is also very cool.
This 1 star is only for those who would like to have breakfast here. We have been to the Seacontainers restaurant on 4 occasions and unfortunately they were unable to accommodate us for breakfast. They are prioritising hotel guests so 1 star for breakfast.
This was my second stay here for a week. Checkin lines were a bit of a wait (nearly 35 mins even after I had pre registered} but smooth nonetheless during my turn. I wish they did a single line to checkin with the next available receptionist rather than random adhoc lines to each receptionist. They do hold bags for you if you arrive early which is nice. The rooms are ok, I got an interior facing room, so nothing to see there. Fairly minimal, you get a desk, a bed, tv and shower. They did provide slippers that I did not use. The room was very clean, but the bathroom floor had quite a few spots - didnt look like they mop it too often. Location wise, its great, right next to south bank where u can find a lot of places to eat that are all quite good. They have a loyalty program called shipmates, but sadly you cannot apply a recent stay to it. You need to sign up and book direct with them.
Deffinatly worth a stay. Lots nearby and fairly easy transport with blackfriers and Waterloo near. The hotel itself is very nicely finished with great rooms, compfy beds and facinating decor throughout. The bar in a must to visit while there for one of the expertly thought out seasonal cocktails. The real kicker that made the stay amazing was the staff. Check in was a delight and the welcome from the staff was great, going above and beyond to offer us a class of sparkling wine for our aniverary and gave us some great tips to get the best out of our plans for the two days. Will return and will recommend to any in London for the night.
Was here on our honeymoon. Breakfast was amazing and staff were so hospitable. Especially our host Elizabeth. She was great. Recommend to anyone
Perfect location on the river Thames. Clean nicely designed modern style rooms. I loved it!
Great hotelin the excellent location, walking distance to london eye, Big Ben and Covent Garden. Tube station close-by. Great breakfast and spacious rooms.
I stayed for a little under a week and had the best time thanks to Victor from Front Office. From check-in onwards, I had a great experience. Attentive, friendly and smooth process. I also love the hotel facilities and bars. I would definitely come back again. Thank you for a wonderful stay!
Loved the every moment there. Beast place for nicest drinks, lovely posh rooms. Nice views.. just brilliant
Absolutely 5 star, couldnt fault it at all. The people were great, the atmosphere was amazing and couldnt have asked for a better location. Would definitely recommend staying here...
The bar on the 12th floor has incredible views. Service great and quiet rooms
Stayed here for my birthday with my partner, what a fabulous experience, lovely staff, lovely room and lovely service, thank you 😊
Had a fabulous stay for a special weekend away for my 5 year old great niece - all the staff made our stay very memorable particularly Joe who went above and beyond for us. A gorgeous room and excellent facilities
Great food, great drinks, great atmosphere. Service was a little slow even though not many people dining, and non allergen options limited.
For the price and being a well known hotel in london, we were very disappointed.- shower broke and leaked- during checkin concierge didnt give us adequate information eg. Where is Breakfast, lift directions. Nothing at all- tv does not even work - cant chrome cast it, tried to contact the concierge but no reply unless we go down to reception- no toiletries for the price?? Not even shower gel- 2 stars for the bar
The price for London was excellent for July time, however, was charged deposits for the 2 Hotel rooms which no information of this was communicated prior to arrival amounting to £200 extra, parking 5 stars very secure and helpful staff member, depending on which staff member is on depends on tge level of service you get from the front of house staff upon leaving everyone was attentive however tge major let down was the unexpected deposit charges, lack of communication and hit and miss 5 star service from staff other than that great location and clean rooms etc
Cool roof top cocktail bar, Amazing 3 course evening meal in stylish, cool interior. Would recommend highly. We purchased the timeout offer. Well worth the price. 5 stars
We rate this a 3 stars because of the service we received when we first arrived. When me and my fiancé arrived at 3 pm (the official check in timewe had to wait about 20 mins before anyone could see us to check us in then when we did speak to someone they told us that our room is way too big and hasn’t been cleaned yet which left us baffled they then told us to come back at half 5 and it SHOULD be ready. I paid a premium price I expect premium service. Lovely hotel room and great food but service is mediocre at best.
Only for the restaurant: service was great. They gave me a nice table, my birthday so very kind of them. Food was OK.
Sea containers hotel is an outstanding hotel, with large spacious rooms and 1st class service. The rainfall shower is superb and free ammenities make it convenient and hassle-free. The service is first class, with great and supportive hotel staff attending to your needs.
The staff are so accommodating, helpful and friendly. The rooms are lovely, clean and spacious. The rooftop bar is amazing - I recommend the Cosmopolitan! I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking to stay in London.
We were in the restaurant on the shore of the river. Then tried out the rooftop bar, but the outside closed even before 10.. so were upset.. went to the bar downstairs.. was nice for s night cap.
Very cool design and super clean, comfy rooms but avoid the restaurant. I have eaten there twice in the last month and both times the service was slow (and rude on the first occasion!- we were constantly having to flag down waiting staff to chase the things we’d ordered. The food is overpriced, it tasted pretty average and actually quite greasy on both occasions (if you fancy spending £18 on a burger do it at Hawksmoor). I used to love celebrating special occasions at Sea Containers but I’m sorry to say that I wouldn’t any more.
It was a wonderful experience, this was a treat from my son and his partner,The Hotel was clean and the staff were welcoming, there was also a secure car parking. It a was brilliant experience.
Amazing service and fantastic food. Wonderful place to dine, especially if it’s a nice day and you can utilise the outdoor space and people watch the time away!
Thank you for such a wonderful experience. We enjoyed every moment we spent in the hotel. The staff were friendly and very helpful. The room was lovely and the bed was just so blummin comfortable.Breakfast was delicious and offered an amazing variety.A very easy five stars. We will be returning.
We stayed in this hotel for 5 nights. Our experience was very good. The room space is relatively small but super clean.Furniture is modern and new .The restaurant was good and they have outdoor seating with wonderful view specially during the sunset 🌅The staff are so lovely and nice.
Horrific customer service.. Received a gift voucher to book a stay..there was no option to enter details on the website to apply voucher.. phoned to confirm process, was told to book online the debit card was taken as a holding measure and I could present my vouchers at checkout. My debit card has been charged, phoned three times to try and sort. twice cut off and then told the reservation dept. have gone home for the weekend.
Mediocre experience: sterile room at the far end of a long corridor, view staring straight into an office building offering little privacy, service was impersonal and unremarkable. The hotel almost felt like an add on to the bars and restaurants on the ground floor, with security standing menacingly at the river side entrance.
It tries hard, but doesnt quite make the grade."An ocean liner..." well, OK...Entrance feels claustrophobic and as if youre under the hull of said liner... dark, gloomy and a bit noisy, which is very different to a "buzz"...Huge chain-link sculptures were being used as climbing frames by children...The bedroom was spartan, and smelled ever-so-slightly of body odour... comfy bed though. Our view from the comfy bed was a concrete wall, and from the window itself, a building site, which I suppose shows its an area on the "up".Breakfast was OK, but honestly, could I please be trusted with my own teapot? And why are the pastries hidden? And why was it so noisy?Terrible fencing on the outside seating area made for a tacky presentation..why not go for glass for an uninterrupted view of the south bank and river-scape?Over-enthusiastic house keeping staff came into our room TWICE before we had left; which wasnt really late ..So, all in all, very average. Could be, and should be much better.(Also, a terrible name for a hotel . I am not cargo, nor am I a stowaway ...)
Stayed at Sea Containers London for over a week during business visit. This hotel is located on South Bank of Thames River. Blackfriars and Waterloo underground stations are quite close by (5-10 mins walk).Rooms are maintained quite well with enough amenities, toiletries. I was in Superior room with queen bed, snaps attached.Do note that not all rooms have a great view! Rooms overlooking Thames River has higher rates.Overall Service is okay and needs improvement...sometimes no reply when one calls Guest Service. Wake up call was missed. Even at restaurant things are bit slow.Breakfast has a good menu in general, but for Asian vegetarian likes me there are very limited options. On weekends especially during summer, hotel sees huge footfall and gets super crowded with slow service at restaurant etc.Staff is cordial and helpful, special call-out to Vince, Emanuel and Victor for their services.
Spa was great, had a Swedish massage, they use an external agency, the lady I had was really good and very knowledgeable. Perfect amount of pressure.Visited the roof top bar on a Friday evening around 11pm, was not crowded, good music and service was great.
Thank you for looking after us so well. In particular last minute changes and allergy requirements. Our table host was great, very efficient and polite. We enjoyed our celebration and felt very welcome.
A great location with excellent service and friendly helpful staff. The food in the restaurant was top-notch too. My only complaint is that the rooms are quite compact and cramped especially with 2 beds and 4 guests in a room.
I came here just to eat at the downstairs restaurant after walking along the river. The food was great. I really enjoyed my burger! The bathrooms downstairs were also very nice. In addition, the general decor was interesting as well.
The location is amazing and bed extremely comfortable. The stuff is very friendly, however considering the high level of the hotel, I was expecting a coffee machine in the bedroom instead of instant coffee. That would be a great improvement
Hmm, mixed experience here. Booked a 1 night stay (reservation 492300in a river view room with my wife as a nice treat. Room itself was lovely, a good size and very clean with the promises river view from the 5th floor. Bed was comfortable and we had a good nights sleep - apparently there was a thunderstorm overnight but neither of us noticed it! Really couldnt fault the room at all.The stay was rather let down by the service though. Id downloaded the app in advance and checked in online, but still had to queue behind quite a lot of other people who hadnt checked in yet to get my room key - they could really do with a fast lane for those who have done the paperwork, especially when its busy. Got to the desk, signed the paperwork was told breakfast was included & when the restaurant was open. I queried this as I thought Id booked room only but was assured breakfast was indeed included. Back to this later...Went down to the restaurant for our pre-booked 1930 slot - Id signed up for the £50 pre-payment which was supposed to give us £25 off our spend. We were promptly served with drinks and our food orders taken. All good so far, although I was slightly disappointed that my beer was served to me in a can rather than poured into my glass. Our shared starter of ham croquettes arrived shortly afterwards. Finished those off and ordered a glass of wine each to go with our main courses. We were then made to wait over an hour for our main courses to arrive, which they eventually did with apologies at around 2115. Very nice food although a little too salty for our tastes, especially the potatoes. Asked for the bill as wed decided to go upstairs to 12th Knot for dessert cocktails. This arrived and they had been good enough to knock off the cost of the service charge and two glasses of wine, but the promised £25 discount from my pre-booking was missing. Queried this and was told it would be applied at check out the next day, so paid our £101 bill (one bottle of water, one beer, one prosecco, one starter and two mainsand headed up to 12th Knot. Lovely evening there although the delays to our meal meant that we couldnt sit out on the roof terrace as wed hoped because it was too late - it closes at 10.Had a wonderful night in our room and headed down for the promised included breakfast in the morning. We were checked off the list, shown to our table and served with coffee. I had the hot buffet, served in two parts as they didnt note down my order correctly and had to fetch the rest of it on a separate plate. My wife had the eggs benedict. Breakfast was good although the mushrooms were extremely salty. And so to check out - more issues here unfortunately. I was at least attended to promptly this time, but I was told that breakfast wasnt included after all and Id have to pay a rather astronomical £51.75 for it. They also werent able to process my £25 discount from my pre-booked evening meal as apparently that should have been done in the restaurant, who had told me it was done at check out. Im told Ill get a call to sort this out, so Ill wait with baited breath for that. So, in summary, lovely comfortable room with a great view, but service was slow & confused and it ended up costing me nearly £80 more than Id expected for a 1 night stay. Would I return here? Maybe, well see how they deal with the issues mentioned above. The hotel itself really is lovely.
Ive stayed here several times, this time I have my little dog with me and I AM SO Impressed with the service. The reception team went above and beyond to make us feel welcome, some places advertise as friendly but really theyre just tolerant - Sea Containers really did welcome both of us. The room was clean, it didnt smell like some rooms do when you book dog friendly and it shows that youre in the old forgotten rooms even though you pay for it. Here apart from some additional wear on the carpet I couldnt tell the difference from the other rooms at all. Same spec, same level of lovely. They do hold a deposit of £100 in case but it is fully refundable which personally I think is better than the arbitrary charge many places add to the bill regardless. I am So pleased, and will now always default to stay here with or without my dog! Thank you Sea Containers !
Had a wonderful evening, great staff, good variety of meal options which was a requirement as we had vegetarians in the group. It was a shame we could not access the rooftop bar with a dinner booking and on our evening they had some issues with "puddings", never the less a very enjoyable evening.
Friendly service. Well organised rooms with plenty of space. Lovely views over the Thames. Excellent housekeeping and cleaning. Useful gym. A great choice for a London visit.
The service from the staff made you constantly feel as if you were getting VIP treatment. The breakfast was on of the best Ive ever had - although a buffet service, you can request poached eggs made to order. The creamist yolk in an egg Ive ever tasted.
Honestly, I cant say enough about the hotel and the Front House staff especially Nelson Tavares. During this business trip, we were working around the clock with clients and literally had no time to pick up gifts for our clients. After calling several wine shops in London and none were able to deliver wines to our offices, Nelson took it upon himself to help us locate and get the wine gifts we needed along with the gift bags and cards! Its so difficult to get help when you need it while traveling and the staff here never hesitated to assist. Aside from the amazing location, beautiful rooms and exceptional services, the Sea Containers London staff sincerely cares about their guests and took guest services to a completely different stellar level. This is the only hotel you should stay at whenever youre in London. I have stayed in over 10+ hotels and nothing compares. I am forever grateful to the entire team and Nelson. Thank you and thank you!
Great hotel. Good views, the website is a little misleading on the view you get. But the hotel was very good at helping to resolve.Hoped there would be more food options available late at night. Other than that great stay.
Had an amazing stay. Great location, amazing building and facilities. Shout out 2 the bell hop team for helping start off on an amazing note. Perfect location for exploring London. Great food, amazing drinks and views from the rooftop bar.
Ive stayed here for a week and had an amazing time! My room was super spacious with river view, the most comfy bed and a super nice bathroom. Staff was always so welcoming and helpful whenever I had a question and room service was also great - can recommend the truffle pasta! Another positive is that its super central and you can get everywhere very quickly. I was in London for a work trip and needed to get to both east and west London so it was very convenient. Can only recommend the hotel and cant wait to come back soon!
I had the most wonderful afternoon for a lunch with my Mum in March at the main restaurant on the ground floor. Never been before, this was a belated Christmas present (thanks, Omicron!and it was superb. The atmosphere is really fun at the restaurant and the food is absolutely delicious, best mac and cheese that Ive ever had. Thanks to all the chefs and the waiting staff who made our day out so special. Mariella our waitress was fantastic. Cannot wait to return.
This is a beautiful hotel on the water with spacious rooms. There are several great restaurants nearby and a great bar in the restaurant. Only issue is that one of the nights I was there, I was abruptly woken up to men fighting outside my bedroom at 2am. It took quite some time for the fight to be broken up.
