Old-world German joint with live entertainment on weekends, Bavarian noshes & liter beers.
Good food but the worst service ever. I am currently writing this review after waiting 90 minutes and I have still not gotten my food. I come here every year for my birthday. That will not be happening again.
My wife and I came here because it was recommended as a Celiac-Friendly option, and because were both fans of German food. We came without a reservation, say right away, and after requesting Celiac-Friendly options, the server was nice enough to explain what was safe (which the menu showed as well), and explained that the restaurant took precautions specific for Celiac needs. They even had a Gluten-free beer option. All the food was excellent, and the accordion player was a nice touch. Definitely coming back!
Best place to celebrate Oktoberfest or anytime - especially with newer ownership! Its a fun, family owned restaurant with great food and staff!! 🍻
Schnitzel Platz is my families favorite restaurant and not just because the food is outstanding. Chuck, Leo, Charlie and the rest of the staff are warm and welcoming. The food, service and friendship make for a perfect dining experience. Thank you Schnitz team for all that you do!
The night I was there with friends was nice, they have a live group playing music, the server was pleasant too.And by the way try their 3 liter beer if u believe in your self
The roast chicken was very dry. The soup was pretty good but it was not possible to get a slice of rye bread or a dinner roll with our meal.
Beer was a little expensive and food could have come faster but its a good restaurant with reasonably priced, mostly very good food. Ive never been to Germany so I cant speak to its authenticity but I enjoyed myself there.
Our favorite restaurant. Delicious food. Potato pancakes are heavenly. Staff and owner are all friendly. Highly recommend. Thank you Chuck for making my daughters birthday special!
Had not been here in a while and the atmosphere is just amazing the service not just ours but everybody elses, was so friendly ,staff was extremely informed on the menu items. The food was amazing and the price was pretty great. So great to see a restaurant that actually cares and doesnt have a bunch of Staff members on their cell phones as well as having good food.
Most of the food was very good. Our service was fantastic. We ordered a wine that was so good, we had a second glass. Everyone was attentive & very helpful. They had live music inside & also in the tent outside. I would definitely go back.
Its the place to do Octoberfest! But I think you need reservations. We had an excellent time, excellent food, and the servers are like family members.
The food and Service is very poor!!! The potato pancakes didn’t even taste like potato at all, it tasted like old oil and some breading on it, it was also very thin! Hash-browns from other places taste better… when I approached my server about it-Leo asked what I’m talking about and that everybody loves it and etc, and with attitude he just grabbed it off my table… no apology nothing… The pretzel that I ordered almost 99% sure that it was a frozen pretzel and it wasn’t made fresh. I tasted better pretzels from the mall … and the cheese that comes with it was supposed to be the beer cheese but it just regular melted cheese … The sausage appetizer it had only four different little sausages, one cut in half and not even a whole thing, The only thing good at The restaurant was a side of horseradish ….it was a little bit more to that but what I’m trying to say is that I don’t think any customer/guest at a restaurant should be treated this way by a server, specially I understand that he didn’t cook the food… we all go to a restaurant to eat good and prepared food, order the way we want to come plus we are paying a lot of money for it and for the service also…. The way the server, Leo, acted towards me by my table, I felt very embarrassed around other guests in this restaurant... It’s Oktoberfest people just pick different restaurants to celebrate it!!!!! The overall vibe in there it’s not too comforting, I don’t recommend.
Went there today in the early afternoon, seated without delay, service was fast, food was awesome as usual, atmosphere was great. Love this place, especially during Oktoberfest.
Went last Saturday...very busy because of Oktoberfest. The servers were excellent...I know they were running around and very busy, so can not complain there.I had the Deutsche Platte..the rotkraut was bland, should have been sweet with a touch of sour. The frikadelle was mushy with no taste. The schnitzel was greasy. I know they do not make the sausages themselves, so I can not complain about them.Overall...the service was good contrary to them being so busy. The food was subpar.
Delicious food with ample seating. Best potato pancakes and schnitzel I have had in years.
What to begin... the food was so strange .... Rotkraut ,Sauerkraut and the liver dumpling up was very VERY salty... its not supposed to be salty!!! As a German , it disappoints me. The Deutsche Haus Platte sausages were too chewy and the Schnitzel was too fried up with so much oil. The potato soup was no flavor at all..... Only come to this restaurant for the pretzels and the beer. And I know that the Bavarian themed restaurant is very well known theme in German restaurants. So I wont say anything about that since it is Oktoberfest themed. I get that the restaurant wants to do activites . But WWII trivia is too overrated. The restaurant should do every month a different era. WWII,WWI etc.. Service was alright. But the food was a terrible experience.
Not the best German food out there but server was good. They need more staff on site the poor waiters had to many tables that night.
Good food and nice menu with a good selection across German Specialities
I’m sure this place has very good German food and the aromas from the kitchen were devine. However when we got there we found that almost everything is either cooked in lard and/or has pork in it. Sadly we don’t eat pork or any bi-products of pork. We were really disappointed as we really wanted to try the food. The place is very clean, waitstaff friendly and has really authentic German menu. I gave it a 4 for ambience, cleanliness, service, and German authenticity.
We arrived at 5:15... Our meal took 55 minutes. Food served cold. No one checked back. I lived in Osterreich and was looking forward to a good German meal. This place doesnt deliver.
Prost! Hands down the best german restaurant. Music, food, drinks, and staff are amazing. Cant wait to be back!
The food in the tent is terrible. The 6 inch bratwurst came on a bun with nothing else. The foot long frankfurter was a hotdog with no condiments on a 6 inch bun. The French fries were under cooked. The pretzel was good
There is only one Platz. I grew up nearby and always make a stop while in Chicago. Excellent food and ridiculous music during oktoberfest. Well worth a trip. Docked a star for tired interior and limited german beer selection
Very polite staff. Great experience. Saturday evening so indoor dining was 3hr wait.... but tent was 30% full! Special menu and limited beer, but ooompa bands made up for it. Great wait staff outdoors. Fun time.
We really enjoyed a lunch at Schnitzel Platz during Oktoberfest season. They had great draft beer options and the potato pancakes were a hit. We also ordered a large pretzel with the beer cheese and that was also very good. The German salad was great with the bratwurst sandwich. All in all it felt like a very genuine German experience and made us feel like we were back in Germany!
Came here about 1 on a Sunday, left at 3 - the pretzel was great, potato pancakes were a bit too crispy but still great, came with sour cream and apple sauce - ordered pork schnitzel with sauerkraut and home fries. The home fries were more like chunky hash browns. A huge Weihenstephaner brewery place, had dunkel and hefeweiss on tap
9/24/22 We traveled over two hours to come to the German restaurant. It was a special occasion for us. We are welcomed into the restaurant by Ashley . The first thing she said to us was we are completely booked tonight and we went for lunch at 2 PM.She was quite rude, and said I will need to see if we have room for you. I wish I could’ve taken a picture of the restaurant. The middle was completely empty and there were three booths along the windows that were empty. She ended up being our server and was rude throughout the meal. I wanted to get up and leave my spouse did not want me to. Never going back.
The food was amazing and the atmosphere was SO fun. It is a loud and boisterous place so I would be ready for that. And service isnt super fast, so I probably wouldnt eat here in a hurry. Definitely worth the wait though! Some of the best purple cabbage Ive ever had.
I love this place. You get outstanding German food, great beers and fantastic service. I have been there for Oktoberfest and during regular season and it is always great.
I went there during their Oktoberfest. The big beers and the tents were fun. The food and the music were mediocre.
A very fun atmosphere with really really good German food. I went with a friend and while I didnt have a big appetite I decided to order a side potato salad and the sauerkraut balls as an appetizer. The potato salad was the best I have ever had, beating another great German restaurant in downtown San Antonio. It had the perfect blend of tang to it and was served warm. It is honestly to die for. The sauerkraut balls were good. They are a breaded blend of sauerkraut, spicy ham, and sausage, deep fried. They were served with a tasty "sweet mustard" which was like a good honey mustard dipping sauce. The prices here arent cheap, but the ambiance and delicious food were well worth it.
Would leave 0 stars if I could. My husband and I have been going to the Schnitzel Platz for quite a few years, and I used to love having my birthday dinners there. Last night we had a group of ten, we all ordered food and drinks, ate, and enjoyed ourselves- we rang up about a $500 tab and left a good tip. It was really busy. Our table ordered 4 boots of beer and the server took IDs for them (my two sisters shared one boot and 3 of the guys each had one). By the end of our dinner, the restaurant had lost track of one of the boots and accused us of stealing it and refused to give my sister in laws ID back. We were planning on going to the GH Oktoberfest tent afterward and really just wanted to leave. We certainly did NOT steal their boot glass but offered to pay for it just so we could leave; this ordeal had already put us about 45 minutes behind schedule for the evenings plans. The manager that was working last night- (Saturday Sept 17proceeded to tell us how "bad" and "suspicious" it looked that we were trying to give them money for a boot they lost track of and caused a huge scene, indicating that since we were offering to pay for it, that we must have stolen it. Were all adults in our 40s, can buy our own boot glasses if we wanted them, etc. It was absolutely HUMILIATING. He eventually gave her her ID back but was unbelievably condescending and rude. I LOVED this place for years, it was my go-to for German comfort food, but will NEVER go back. I am just floored at how nasty and rude the manager was. I was about ready to get police involved. Maybe the restaurant should have a better protocol in place for their boot glasses vs wrongly harassing and accusing customers of stealing them.
Definitely as authentic as German there is. Someone recommended this spot because I was looking for a true German restaurant in the Chicagoland area and it did not disappoint. I had the bratwurst with the homemade noodles, and of course the beer!Had an awesome time with friends. Definitely want to come back for Oktoberfest festivities though!
Ordered Krauter Steak. No bread was given with meal. Expensive. Waitress was efficient. Krautersteak was not what I remembered from Germany on the Danube. I believe in Germany they used a Skirt steak. Starting Oktober fest this weekend at the Schintzel Platz.
Had the sausage sampler for an appetizer, the blood sausage was very, very good. Authentic food. I had the Wiener Schnitzel, which was quite tasty. I would recommend it highly in the future. Beer selection is fair, though I cant recall which I had that night.
I’ve been coming here for years and I can’t recommend this place enough. Great beer, super friendly staff & spot on phenomenal German food!!! If you are lucky you can catch the live German music and sing along. Order a liter and sing Ticki Tocki Ticki Tocki Oi Oi Oi.Just like on StPatricks day everybody becomes Irish well when you go into Schnitzel Platz everybody becomes family.
This German restaurant was just what I was missing for good German food. The service was wonderful and the food was delicious. It is definitely a place I will work into my rotation. I even ordered a different plate to go for today. There was a guy setting up for the entertainment, but we left before he started.
We love Schnitzel Platz and go at least once per month. Always have the same order, Sauerbraten with extra Spatzle. The servings are generous and almost as good as Moms. For sure the best German food Ive had around Chicago.
Absolutely amazing experience here! The food was delicious and the portions were large. Such a fun atmosphere! The service was very friendly!
Loved the place! Went on a Friday night, place was packed, live accordion music, great atmosphere, and most of all, great food. Big portions.
I don’t eat German food often, but not only was this the best German food I’ve ever had, it was really some of the best dining experience and quality of food I’ve had overall in a long time. They have live music and it was so entertaining. Very friendly welcoming and knowledgeable staff. The owner came over to our table and made us feel very welcome. To some these may sound small details but to me they make a restaurant experience into wonderful night. We will be back very soon! 5 stars on everything!
Lovely traditional German food. Gulasch Like grandma would make. German beer 🍺 of course. I even ate the traditional “salad” plate 😂
Schnitzel Platz is a nice place to go out for something a little different. Its perfect for special occasions that dont warrant a fancy dinner. The atmosphere is pretty casual, with booth and table seating. There are no separate rooms for large groups, but there is space to accommodate groups by combining tables. An accordion player also adds to the fun with background music, beer tent drinking songs, and singing on the weekends. While I dont know a lot about authentic German food, I feel that many menu items capture the essence of traditional German meals. They also offer variations on classics, like a Hawaii Schnitzel. The giant Bavarian pretzel is a great shareable appetizer. Ive also enjoyed the Paprika schnitzel and various sausages. Portions are large and prices are fair, but it does add up by the end of a meal. Two dinners and beers end up costing over $50.During Oktoberfest, there is a special limited menu, and reservations are required for Thursdays to Sundays. Its a fun night out for beers of various sizes, music, and a taste of Bavaria.
Overall enjoyed my meal and had decent service. The beet salad was so fresh and the salmon was bursting with lemon garlic flavor. While the spaetzle was bland those green beans were super seasoned! 👌
Authentic German restaurant with traditional cuisine and beer in oversized pitchers. No better place to celebrate the Octoberfest!
The Food was great and the family friendly atmosphere was wonderful. While celebrating Octoberfest, the authentic ambience of the music, decor, food and beer made for an awesome night out.
Great restaurant with an authentic menu. The Prince Leopold platter is definitely a nice variety dish to share. Dessert was simple and delicious. Only issue was the wait for the entrée and having to devouring the bread basket.
Very good food, nice atmosphere, good beer selection. Fiance declared the German chocolate cake "yum."The waiter could have used some help, he was literally running back and forth trying to keep up. He still managed to provide great service. Its not cheap, though.
The daughter picked this place out for us to try. Let me say right now, it was damm good. My wife was born in Germany and my daughter and I have had the privilege cost Germany on several occasions. So on to this place, walked through the door and your taken on a visual adventure. So many cuckoo clocks and German related items to see and take in. Had so much fun. Also live music sets the scene for an authentic dinner. Its a must stop location.
We love going to this place for the food and the dinner time entertainment. I believe they have a band playing most nights but for sure Thursday through Sunday. The food and the staff are always top notch and they are constantly bringing in seasonal beers. The Schweine (porkschnitzel is our favorite but the others are just as good. And the meal for two is huge and filling.
