Schmidty's Bar & Restaurant in La Crosse

We had a birthday party of 6 girl friends in our 70s and up!. Ate in the bar 2/1 hat nite. The food was great and our little waitress was just the Best! Wish I had gotten her name to mention it! She made our good time together even better. We will all be back, BTW, the old fashioned"s were exceptionally good, as were the bloody marys! The steak was "bon appettie!" We look forward to our next celebration at Schmidtys! JS & friends

My friend called in to ask if they had romaine for their salads as weve been aware that with Covid, it was only iceberg. He was told that the salad would be romaine (I cant eat iceberg due to digestive/health issues). We received iceberg and spinach. Weve been regulars despite because the chicken tenders & sauce are typically fabulous but congrats, you just lost us as customers :)

Portion size is made for growing boys ( a good thing). The prices are very affordable. Food was tasty.

My Dad and I went for brunch this morning. Wasnt busy at all. Theyve limited the brunch. It was ok! Salad bar was good! Nice it wasnt so busy...less noisy!

Good place to meet up with friends and eat a lot of good food.

This establishment will not serve people with out-of-state IDs. Employees accused us of using fake IDs, when they were in fact legitimate.

The Sunday breakfast buffet is awesome......thats when I worked there now it just trash

Great salad bar and soup. Prime rib is to die for. Stick to steak house options if you want to impressed. Broiled fish is to die for.

Very bad food. Had a filet that you could not cut with a steak knife. Taco salad had no taco meat. Manager took off $7.00. Oh and baked potato was rotten in the middle.

Its OK. I got the pork chop with pilaf rice. The pork chop was a little overcooked and dry. The rice was dry and seem a little overcooked too. A friend got the pasta and said it was ok as well. So, nothing to really write home about.Atmosphere was nice on the patio and service was good. Would come to hangout but definitely not for the food.

We really like schmidtys. Really good food. The wife really likes that they have a salad bar. Prices are good. Good atmosphere too. Bar side and restaurants side.*Post pandemic! Everything above still stand by. However, with the difficulty of hiring staff. Thats everywhere I know. We noticed that the bar side gets priority. We still like the place. Just be aware that your probably gonna wait a little more for things like refills. Getting your check. Definitely still recommend.

Rich and I along with a couple of our close friends stopped in after we got back in town from a road trip. We wanted to order 4 grasshoppers and the waitresses first words out of her mouth was I dont think theyll make them because we are busy and you know it does take time to make them. She said I can ask her but I really doubt it. Our friends said would you please. She came back and said she would make them. The whole time she was making the grasshoppers she was complaining to the customers around the bar about making then when it was busy and so hot. We had not been there for a long time and thought we would give you another chance after we had been there for brunch one Sunday when the food was cold and the scrambled eggs werent even yellow, they were brown in color and the pancakes were literally burnt. Guess we wont be back after being tested that way and listening to her complain about what she had to do.

One of my favorite restaurants. Always very good food, great service and reasonable prices. (Great steaks, prime rib, and shrimp)

Great bar with tap beer and gotta get the salad bar by itself or with anything.

Lately the service has been disappointing. Last night we arrived at 745p and were very rudely meet by hostess who said they were closed. The door when walking in states dinner goes to 9pm. She said they close at 8, they did seat us but we regret it. Medium rare Burgundy pepper steak arrived as a normal sirloin that was extremely rare with ice cold mushrooms. The server was helpful but states kitchen was closed. Who closes a kitchen after serving steaks/burgers? We were not the only table just getting food. Left disappointed and hungry. Food is usually good but lately its becoming last choice due to service.Edit: have been there a few more times, everytime there is an issue with service. Last night it was waiting 30min for drinks after getting a table, I wish I was joking. Everytime it is something. Food is great, needs better management or something.

I just had the soup and salad bar and it was great. Excellent chicken soup.

So disappointed, I have been to this place a few times. The service and food used to be amazing. We called and made a reservation for after UW La Crosse graduation. When we arrived they forgotten write down our reservation. We did get a table in the bar right away, but it was dirty.The floors and bathrooms werent any better. Waitress was friendly ,but we waited for our drinks for 35 mins. Our food took 1.5 hours. The food was cold and baked potatoes were under cooked. I felt very bad for our waitress she was trying so hard to make things right. The bartender was rude to the point that two gentlemen behind us left, he never did make our drinks. One of the girls went behind the bar to make them. Lastly a girl behind the bar kept pulling her vape out of her bra and taking hits.

Great drinks. I had their roast beef special the other night and it was delicious! Pepperjack cheese curds were also very good.

Went there today for mothers day out of garlic toast and got the wrong order twice limited menu for mothers day my mother order a tenderloin filet and brought roast beef and the 2nd time brought out prime rib didnt take plates and didnt give us any water worse experience ever

All the fried food was soggy and dont order the Parm encrusted chicken pasta.... It is horrible. You get more asparagus than anything. Soup and salad was the best part. Out of a group of about 15 of us only 2 people actually finished their food. Will not be going back.

Excellent pan fried cod. I was recommended to do a WI thing, fish fry Friday in WI during lent. Went, good salad bar, two very good soups. Excellent fish. Anne, was a very nice waitress. Had a sour beer, not as good as Barbarian Brewery in Boise, ID, but quenched the thirst.Will do it again.Thanks Anne and staff,E

Steak was not cooked well, very bland and rubbery. Very small portions. Definitely not worth the money. Better off going to Troashouse or outback.

Its been many years since my last visit. Still a GREAT place to eat ! I will be back when I visit LaCrosse again !

Good place for food & best drinks. Theyve got one of the best bloody Marys in La Crosse. Friendly people. Friendly bartender. Loved it. Best time ever. I ordered the melt and it was perfect.

Great to enjoy a fish fry with a great salad bar. Oh yes the brandy old fashions are a real treat cannot get a good one here in Austin TX. Sadly the fried cheese curds were not the best otherwise this would be 5 stars

Went here for a retirement party for a friend.Had a group of over 20 people. The service was well above average. The price was good. The food was even better.

Soup and salad bar very good, I had the ribeye and the wife had the tenderloin, the beef was very low quality chewy and no flavor, try sourcing local beef or a higher quality product. Our sides were very good and the curds were great.

Historically a favorite worth 5 stars. Bit by bit they have been slipping for a while now . First Ill go over the current positives, then the negatives.* Over all the food quality is fairly good.* One of the few remaining places to have a soup and salad bar!And now some negatives.* Used to have 2 soups, now just 1.* The longer the soup has set out, the colder it is. Its as if the warming plate its on is off or not working. The last few times the temp seemed to me to be maybe around 100 deg. F or a tad more. Not only is that unappetizing, its also risky for causing food poisoning When the fresh pot is put out though, its piping hot.* Prices have risen to where Im not finding as much value as in the past. Yes I understand inflation is up and staff probably cost more than previous, but even factoring that in I think its the case. Value for money is of course subjective, but in my estimation I think they push it a bit over the line in some cases. For example, one of the cheaper items on the menu, a grilled ham and cheese plus 1 side is around $11 if memory serves. Yeah I dont expect to get that for $5 anymore, but $8 would seem more in line.* They seem to take family friendly to the degree that becomes generally unfriendly for pretty much everyone else. As a case in point, we were there once when a young child (high chair agewas literally screaming and shrieking at ear splitting levels, repeatedly and over a prolonged time. It was one of the worst examples of it I have ever encountered and thats saying something. We finally asked the waitress if they could resolve the problem. Well, after management was consulted we got back word that no they were unwilling to ask the offending family to tone things down. Also, they could offer no change in seating location since they were full. This was on a Saturday evening even, though as bad as it was it would have been too much any day or time. I think people are probably hard wired to have their attention shifted to the sounds of a baby or small child who is crying out. It caused us not only to not be able to relax and enjoy each others company at dinner, it actually brought us stress and made it hard to hear each other even talk. Thats not the experience I want to have dining out. Please, if your child is too young to behave appropriately in public, get a baby sitter, go to Chuckee Cheese, or maybe tough it out at home until your child is up to it. Or I guess eat at Schmidtys because they dont seem to have any problem with it?* Service quality has declined from a once excellent or very good, down to merely good on average. Its still alright but watch out for any further decline.Everything else is Id say is in the satisfactory classification; definitely not bad but not necessarily outstanding either.For context, we have been somewhat regular customers of Schmidtys for about 30 years. If things stay the same we will still stop in here or there. If they get better, I will be happy to restore a higher rating to them and visit more often. If things slide down too much, we will likely just avoid it.

Ordered chicken strips and fries, chicken was soaked in greasy and completely soggy, fries were soaked in grease as well. Not with $10 and having to waste money and eat somewhere else.

Salad bar was awesome as usual. Had a great waitress! We came in later on a Saturday night and were the only people in dining room but we did not feel hurried at all. Always a great place to eat.

The soup bar is very well stocked. The soup on the other hand can be lacking. Ive dined here multiple times as it is just down the road. Usually a pretty bust place around meal times. Add one more soup and bigger soup bowls and I will be a daily !

Regular customers, at least 2 times a week for years! Tonight? Well, think you need to reconsider your new bar manager, Sam. Rude, challenging, loudly argumentative to not only us, but to other regular customers as well ..one of whom walked out before finishing their beer, which is VERY unusual! Were not trying to " train" Sams bartenders as was loudly stated to us. Since when are we not valued customers, deserve the service were accustomed to with the other great bar and wait staff.!!

Good atmosphere and good customer service. Good range of drink options. And the food is consistent and on point. Would be 5 stars, but the music player wasnt working.

We were able to get our large group (20 ish peopleaccommodated very last minute!!! The service was great, food was delicious, our last minute change of plans could not have worked out any better, thanks to them. Very grateful for their excellent customer service and great food. Be sure to try out their cheese curds!

Waitress called me “fat” for eating a plate of salad from the salad bar and manager said I was hallucinating. Seconds after I go outside I met another couple who was swore at by the manager. Horrible service. Will never EVER come back. So rude of Amy. This place used to be so good. Accused my party of 5 that we weren’t paying because I went to the car because of me crying. The owner is horrible

Ordered some wings with Buffalo sauce. The meat was really tuff. Also ordered some cheese curds. They were pretty greasy. The waitress didnt check on us until we were about to leave. Save yourself some money and go to the family restaurant.

It was our first time here. We went on a Friday evening and it wasn’t too busy. We were seated right away, for two, and it took about 25 mins to get our food. We ordered build your own burgers and they were delicious! (:

Super yummy! Awesome philly great fries the soup was good too! You can tell they make things from scratch here. Even the croutons on the salad were amazing! A friend recommended said she has gone here for years! A family favorite:)

Came in on Cinco de Mayo.. The place was busy to say the least, but no more than a Friday night fish. We sat at the bar while waiting for our table. That was 6:30 pm. A bartender served us. Very rude, (taller girl, black top on)she also needs to learn how to make a Rum and Coke. Absolutely the worst drink we have been served at Schmiditys...ever. No excuse for it, we asked the bartender to add 1/4 to a 1/2 oz. of Bacardi to it..she should of thrown the drink out and made a better one. Instead she added a shot of rum to a 3/4 full glass. Now completely worthless drink. Then charged us for the shot. We went to our table at 6:50, ordered as soon as we sat down. Nothing special, fish and a hamburger, one hour later the server came out and said it would be about 5 more minutes for our food. No offer of free drinks, dessert, nothing "to make a customer happy"... Meanwhile we talked to the people at the next table, they said they were there last Friday and waited 2 hours for their meal to arrive. No reduced bill...Nothing. Well 10 minutes later the food showed up, the burger barely warm, fries cold,( might of been hot if our server was near the kitchen instead of visiting up by the side doorthe fish was not edible, way over salted, cold and some type of Cajun spice on it. This was suppose to be pan fried cod, not the cooks blackened surprise..We have been customers for 25 years, this is by far the worst experience at Schmidtys we have ever had. You have lost your cooks, your good wait staff, your good bartenders. Going to think real hard about coming back again. Speaking with a server, they told me they were busy with a party of 30, well they just didnt just walk in off the street. They made reservations, the kitchen and wait staff should of been well aware of the number coming in. Party gets served and the to hell with the regular customers...Two couples came in after we did and had eaten and had their carry home box on the table when we were finally served. Just sad.... left at 8: 38 pm.... ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE FOR CUSTOMERS TO BE WAITING OVER AN HOUR FOR A BURGER AND HOUSE FISH... very unhappy. Used to be a great place to come in and eat....

Great place! Super nice clean environment, excellent service. Love the food and prices are reasonable. Good menu, good specials, good draught beer selection. The staff really cares about what theyre doing and it shows, and really make everyone feel local.

Winningest pull tabs in the great state of Wi. We love this place ..... great food, awesome bar, reminds me of the old school “WI Supper Club” vibe. Full salad bar and Popcorn!

So wonderful, 100% good. Service was timely and appropriate, food was plenty and delicious.I ordered the special Prime Rib and Cod, and I have say it was fantastic!Prime Rib cooked perfect medium well as I asked, yet juicy but not greasy. The cod was flaky and buttery.Abosule heaven in the mouth. This location is far better then its counterpart in Roman.5 stars for here all the way, worth the drive from Minneapolis!
