Gleaming mosaics & marble line this richly decorated 1880s church topped with colorful onion domes.
Cathedral On the Spilled Blood, Saint petersburgThis place is one of the main center of Russian orthodox Christianity. The orthodox Christianity is bit different from roman catholics. Different rituals, different patriach and different design of church. This cathedral is one of the most cathedrals in the world. The decorations both inside and out are beyond anyones imagination. The mosiac walls are common in middle eastern churches but its interesting to see this art reached far north in russia. Its very interesting to how they make an image with small stones of different colors. Its a pain staking job and the final result is breathtaking.this is something like pixels on lcd screens.Origins of orthodox Christianity is in Israel (Infact Judaism, Christianity, Islam all have roots in jerusalemthen to holy roman empire in istanbul and eventually found its way to Russia. My effort to capture the beauty and detail with a mere mobile phone is definitely futile as nothing can compensate the beauty of this place but the human eye.
As this Church much reminds on St. Basils in Moscow its not that old (neither is St. Pet as a city), but it has a very interesting history and breathtaking interiors which make it a must visit site. History facts:- it was built in 1883 to commemorate the place of Tsar Alexander II assassination in 1881 - therefore "spilled blood",- the Romanov imperial family funded the project,- in order to house the exact place of assassination inside the Church, they narrowed the canal,- after the 1917 Revolution overthrowing the Imperial regime, it was looted and semi-destroyed,- WWII and Leningrad siege brought further destroy and it was turned into a morgue,- after WWII Communist regime banned Church services likewise in all Russia, making it a warehouse,- it was rebuilt during the 90s and reopened in 1997- toady its not a working Church, but the worlds biggest mosaic museum with over 7.500 sqm of amazing artwork.- photography is allowed, entry fee around 8$
Church of spilled bloodGood place to visit covered with many street vendors…Architecture is awesome
The architecture and restoration work effort to bring the monument to its near glorious past is outstanding
Beautiful Cathedral with stunning architecture and wonderful frescoes in a picturesque location with a nearby tranquil park in the heart of a busy city.
One of the most beautiful churches in the world. Audioguide is available for a small extra charge (2.5 EUR), however fully worth it to get to know the story why this church was build and what the purpose is of the interior
Best feeling ever to spend those 2-3 hours with amazing view just by walking next to Kazan cathedral . Totally refreshing n soulful place . I am totally in love with this . Thank you Russia ♥️🇷🇺🥂
A famous landmark in the city. Includes the place where the Ceasar was fatally wounded. Beautiful exterior. Several souvenir shops are available just outside the building.
Amazing place to visit! This church was one of the most beautiful place that I have ever visit.
Amazing historical place. I was impressed by the beauty of this wonderful church. I highly recommend visiting this beautiful temple.
This Church is one of the must visit place in St. Petersburg. This Church was built in memorial of Alexander II as he was assassinated at this place. Theres tour guide available inside the Church in 10 different languages and its very affordable. The entrance fee is less than $5(350 RUB). Unlike other religious places, theres no specific dress code to get in but its recommended to dress in a modest way in order to pay respect.
Very beautiful church. I dont know how to explain but it was breath taking and so beautiful. Outside would be a large local market where you can enjoy shopping and some great coffee and ice cream.
Really liked this place... Very beautiful... great architecture...
Such as mesmerizing place in town. Its fun to visit this place, specially for taking photos. And theres a lot of people selling goods and merch with affordable price. Also the people are nice and so welcomed. I need to visit this place again. I would like to take a chance to going inside, cause I havent yet.
Construction began in 1883 during the reign of Alexander III, two years after the assassination of his father Alexander II. The church was dedicated to be a memorial to his father. Estimates suggest that the construction cost 4.5 million rubles. The construction was completed during the reign of Nicholas II in 1907. Funding was provided by the Imperial family with the support of many private donors. The church is prominently situated along the Griboedov Canal; paved roads run along both sides of the canal. On March 13, 1881 (Julian date: March 1), as Alexander IIs carriage passed along the embankment, a grenade thrown by an anarchist conspirator exploded. The tsar, shaken but unhurt, got out of the carriage and started to remonstrate with the presumed culprit. A second conspirator took the chance to throw another bomb, killing himself and mortally wounding the tsar. The tsar, bleeding heavily, was taken back to the Winter Palace, where he died a few hours later.A temporary shrine was erected on the site of the attack while plans and fundraising for a more permanent memorial were undertaken. In order to build a permanent shrine on the exact spot where the assassination took place, it was decided to narrow the canal so that the section of road on which the tsar had been driving could be included within the walls of the church. An elaborate shrine, in the form of a ciborium, was constructed at the end of the church opposite the altar, on the exact place of Alexanders assassination. It is embellished with topaz, lazurite and other semi-precious stones, making a striking contrast with the simple cobblestones of the old road, which are exposed in the floor of the shrine.
One can only be impressed by the craftsmanship and artistry regardless of having, or not, a connection to the particular esthetic of the Orthodox Church. Worth a visit when seeking out what is truly Russian in a city built to imitate a Western capital.
The exterior is incredible. It fits that Russian Orthodox look that is so iconic. Truly a beautiful work with great architecture. The interior was... eh? Very crowded, there wasnt much successful work done to preserve the walls and ceilings. It is sad honestly.
One of the most remarkable and most decorated churches I ever visited. Very beautiful and it’s surrounded with a lovely park for a stroll and minutes away from Nevsky Prospect.
Fascinating architecture that if you are in Saint Petersburg u MUST visit this place! The interesting part start when u get inside the church, and then u see the real beauty , the arts and the painting made inside an interesting and attractive place for any person even the one who don’t like this type of attraction, highly recommended.Awesome!
Beautiful slice of Russian history. Go in October , much quieter ... tad cold but not freezing. Also buy tickets from the automated machines!
Not older church in St Petersburg,But a beautiful church,it is more of a museum than a prayer of congregation center.Tickets are there at the entrance needless to say higher price for beautiful gardens are nearby, dont miss to visit the Gardens...
Best cathedral need to visit in st.pertaining. just a walking distance from kazan cathedral. Union style doms are amazing. Ticket is 350 rubles. Tha arts of the wall and the celling really eye catching. The jesus who looks down from the celling is my best icon inside the cathedral. There were few guide also, but i did not use them. Better you read before go, so you can enjoy and learn more.
This is one of the fine treasures in St Petersburg. Incredible architecture, beautiful Cathedral surrounded by beautiful Parks and canals. Gets very busy with tourists. Lots of souvenir stores. Do not agree with the people using animals and birds to make a living. Saw a guy with a monkey and bearded dragon. And women with pigeons. Do not agree with this and it should not be encouraged.
Incredible cathedral from inside. The ticket costs 350 rubles which is cheap. It is worth watching. Opposite of Savior on the Spilled Blood is Kazan cathedral which just 5-10 mins walk away. The place around the Saviour church is very peaceful. You will find many souvenir shops, eatery stalls, and painters. Despite the touristy spot, the place is clean and silent.Nearest Metro station: Nevsky
The Church is huge and beautifull. You can take a picture in front of the building, or behind the building, both sides are pretty.Near the church, there is a huge park, you can take a walk at park and visit the other interesting place called Saint Michael.
Nice place to visit. It is one of the iconic place of St. Petersburg. This is the place where Alexandria was killed by terrorist. In side the Cathedral was beautiful. We spent one hour inside the Cathedral.
ONE OF A KIND!!You have never seen a church like this. Over the top is not an overstatement this place has more decoration than Santas grotto.Every which way you look at this place from the outside and inside reveals something spectacular to look at. The history of the place is also very interesting.Worth going to no matter how long you are in at Petersburg for, an absolute highlight
A breathtaking church to visit, and a must-go if you’re in Saint Petersburg. The interior and exterior of this church is exquisitely beautiful and photos honestly do not do the place justice at all.
I wish I could rate Church of Spilled Blood 10 stars! This was the highlight of our visit to StPetersberg! This is a rather small church...it was crowded...but still easy to explore. The walls and ceiling are covered with works of art and trim all composed of tiny titles....and a lot of 24K gold. I walked around with my eyes wide trying to take everything in. There is a tile masterpiece at the front left which measures (guessing24 inches by 30 inches....and it has over 18,000 tiles.
The church of the Savior on spilled blood is one of the iconic landmark in St Petersburg. It is a definite must to visit this amazing church. Currently the church is renovating and the top is covered in construction. The overall structure is still magnificent and mind blowing.Honestly I did not head inside to see the interior as I felt it isn’t worth it unless you appreciate it. I would totally hope for the construction to be over to show the full amazing church architecture.Still it is recommended to visit. There’s a small market that sell souvenir behind the church. But it’s very expensive and if you want to buy cheap souvenir. Head to izmaylovo market at Moscow!!
The church of the savior on spilled blood is one of the main attractions in Saint Petersburg, just on a side street of one of the main streets; Nevskiy Prospekt. It is hard to explain in words how beautiful this church is, with the richness of the colors all around it. Especially during sunrise/sunset it gives a very special touch to these colors.Nearby there is a techno district which gives an amazing view on the church during the parties outside!
A truly remarkable church and memorial built at the place of the assassination of Alexander II - the cobbles mark the spot where he fell. The small model of the church gives a good perspective of the domes. The interior is magnificent will wall to wall to ceiling mosaics. We went a 5pm when the crowds were thinning out as ticket sales end 5:30. An hour to admire the interior is enough and you dont have to dodge too many selfie sticks!
Beautiful church in the middle of Saint Petersburg, located next to a small river. Fantastic colors and soviet architecture. Easy to go to by foot. Great overall atmosphere, a must if youre in Saint Petersburg.
Incredible church! With an heart breaking story on how it was constructed. Make sure to go inside !!! On Sundays at 730am they have the orthodox service where you can go inside and view the interior for free (but cant take pictures), youll also see an orthodox service.
The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood (Russian: Церковь Спаса на Крови, Tserkovʹ Spasa na Kroviis one of the main sights of Saint Petersburg, Russia. This church was built on the site where Emperor Alexander II was fatally wounded by political nihilists in March 1881. The church was built between 1883 and 1907. The construction was funded by the imperial family.
Stunning on the outside. We were able to make it in on our timeline but just admiring the outside was amazing. Theres water leading up to it and makes for great photos too
A beautiful root to go to this place and you can find many attractive paintings in this church that made with color small gravel. In my opinion you must see this place as the signature of St Petersburg. The outer view is shining and interior architecture is amazing
This is a must visit when you are in St Petersburg. It was built by Tsar Alexander III to commemorate the dead of Alexander II after spoiling blood after a bombing by students during a demonstration against the king. His spoiled blood is being kept inside the Cathedral up to now. The interior is very impressive.
I had a friend Dmitry back when I lived in Denver (where I am originally fromCO always tell me about his beautiful city of Saint Petersburg. I recall telling him I would go one day and couldnt wait to see this particular church. Yet another amazing piece of architectural art, and inside was a mental experience I cant really begin to explain. Hope these few photos help. A must see in Saint Petersburg. Feel very blessed to witness in person.
Masterpiece . VIEW through the street feels you are in a highly modernised city.. the entire structure is a art of complete masterpiece. The view of it at day is more vibrant than the night. The Church of the Saviour of blood . The colour of it is vibrant. You should visit this place before u die . It is better to visit it in summer days.. Those are very nice . O my God the feeling when you visit tht place is no worth telling you should visit it only then u cocould see the beauty of it. Streets people around
This place is on my top list of the most beautiful Cathedral around the world that I had been visited. This cathedral is maybe look like a normal from the out side but inside it is the most creative with the very fine mosaic work. All the walls up to the ceiling are covered by thousand of thousands of small pieces of mosaic, this is not only a cathedral for me it is a huge art work!
An absolutely beautiful church in St Petersburg with an incredible history, definitely worth visiting inside. The mosaics are breathtaking and it’s hard to believe many were once destroyed during the war. Worth checking to ensure they aren’t undertaking restoration works before visiting.
The Church of Spilled Blood is probably the most easily recognisable landmark in St. Petersburg. This whimsical building is a must-see attraction when visiting the city. Opening hours are 10.30am to 6pm daily (250 RUBwith evening admission to 22.30pm (400 RUBduring Summer months. The Church of the Spilled Blood is a late 19th century building of Romantic Nationalism architecture. Somewhat similar to St. Basils Cathedral in Moscow, the church features a cluster of onion-shaped domes of various shapes and colour. The building is beautiful to see from the outside and even more remarkable once you enter to see the mosaics within.Once you enter the Church of Spilled Blood, you are treated to a large open area, adorned throughout with mosaics. Historically, the church was closed in 1932 and fell into disrepair during the Soviet period. However, with much interior restoration over the past three decades, there are now a remarkable 7500 square metres of Russian Revival and Orthodox mosaics, believed to be one of the largest displays in the world. And they are beautiful to see.In the end, the Church of the Spilled Blood is a remarkable attraction, something you will long remember with affection when remembering your holiday in St. Petersburg.
Savior on the Spilled Blood 、。。The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood (Russian: Церковь Спаса на Крови, Tserkovʹ Spasa na Krovi.. is one of the main sights of Saint Petersburg, Russia 、。。素晴らしい所である 、。。
The most beautiful church in the city in my opinion. The exterior is of the of unique Russian style and interior is completely decorated with thousands of square feet of mosaics. It is just spectacular! They allow to take pictures inside which is nice. The church is still a working church but open to tourists everyday and it’s a must visit. The exterior of the main dome is under restoration these days but interior is completely done. The ticket is not expensive at all and you can even buy souvenirs inside which goes to the church fun in aid of maintaining it I believe.
Just wow. When you really the entire interior of this place is covered in mosaics less than 1cm square, you get a sense of what it must have taken to build and restore. Definitely worth seeing the interior.
What a great attraction. Make sure to bring your student ID as you can get some student discount to get inside of the chapel. it isnt super crowded in the morning however in the afternoon you can get super crowded and you might have to wait a little bit in line to get inside. Ill suggest visiting Ireland sunset or Sunrise as you can get very nice pictures.
The church was fascinated. Wall and ceiling were completely covered with detailed mosaics. Is a must for visit
This must be on your list because this church has the most beautiful mosaics. Amazing inside and outside. Suggested Duration might be 1-2 hours. Not expensive to enter, from memory around 250 roubles only it is 4 euro.
Its probably one of the best things to see in St Petersburg. I had high expectations of the city, but it is flat, grey and all the buildings are similar. This building is perhaps one of the few that stands out. Its very popular and set in quite a nice quarter of the city. The architecture is amazing and quite photogenic, so you will take many more photos than you will ever want to see again or keep. Inside the church is extremely ornate with all the walls and ceilings painted. Its all very gold and rich. Outside there are artists trying to sell their paintings and artistry, which is probably all imported from China.
