Savannah Zoo - Zoo in Pooler, United States
Awesome wildlife refuge on Oatland Island. Great place to take kids to see a variety of wildlife. Wolves, eagles, owls and lots of other animals. Great educational programs for children. Great views of the marsh. Good place to bring the kids for exercise and education. Fee to enter but you can stay as long as youd like.
Very nice and well maintained. Lots of walking so bring the right shoes. The animals were active and got to see a bobcat eat a bird that landed on the electric wire and stunned itself. The cougars were chasing each other, the bald eagles were squaking.
Nice trail lasts 1.5 hours with a breathtaking open marsh walkway and plenty of educational animal preserves to stop and check out. Self guided tour so you can take your time and enjoy the coastal atmosphere
Very nice leisurely place to visit and not crowded at all. Every group had their own space.
Very nice place. Lots of animals to see. 1 3/4 mile path to follow. We had a stroller with no problems.
Honestly a very cool zoo its a literal jungle but they only have about 10 animals and there are snakes and rabbits etc on the loose and running around at your feet ,not the best thing for small children who are walking or those with fears its also not a place you’ll be enjoy on a hot day with all the walking
It was … okay. Maybe we just went on an off day. There is WAY more walking than animals in my opinion. I know they can’t control the animals but barely any of them were out even in their barnyard area. All of the workers were nice and polite though! TAKE BUG SPRAY! Just wasn’t for us 😖
Went three times in one week! So beautiful and peaceful!! The animals are well kept and clean. The staff is very knowledgeable and kind. The trails are clearly marked, with signs and lots of shade. Gorgeous views of the wetlands! Lots of seating areas. Best time to visit is first thing when they open 10am you can see the animals eating and awake easily visible. There are cougars, wolves, bison, fox, alligators. If you are in Savanna it’s a must see for adults and children!!
A great place to watch wild animals. Some animals didnt show up when we were there (they might hide in somewhere). And we didnt wait for them because there were a lot of mosquitoes. So if you go there in the summer, please bring mosquito repellent!!!
This was such a great family excursion. The trail is super clean and fun. It’s very stroller-friendly. One suggestion: bring LOTS of bug spray! You’re going in the woods.
This place is absolutely awesome! The trails are well kept and built in a way that highlights all the beauty of nature and the wildlife in the area. The animals both in and outside the enclosures are beautiful, look well taken care of, and are not shy! Great place for animal and nature lovers of all ages.
This was a really cheap day out with lots of great nature and hikes! So fun and Interesting! The only complaint I had was that it was well into the 90’s and some of the animals had little to no shade or access to cool shelters. The cows and cold weather animals looked completely miserable.
Although we have been to Savannah many times, we were not aware of this hidden gem. We strolled along the main trail and recorded 2.4 miles. Our entire party enjoyed the boardwalks and the variety of animals.Bug Spray: thanks to reviews that mentioned using bug spray, we came prepared and the mosquitoes did not bother us.Stroller: Some reviews mentioned the path is not stroller friendly. If you have a stroller with large wheels, it would be fine. They also rent wagons for $5 and this was the solution that worked for us.Sunscreen: Much of the path is shaded. It was HOT as one expects in July. The vending machine by the barn was working for cold drinks. Also, there is an air-conditioned building by the wolves.I would love to return when it is not so hot to see the animals more active.
** TAKE INSECT REPELLENT!!!**I can not stress this enough, take insect repellent! We are from Alabama and after reading reviews I was sure a couple mosquitoes would be nothing. We are use to them. However, the reviews did not emphasize that there are literally THOUSANDS of tiny mosquitoes that are on steroids. You cant stop for a second without 10 biting you. Im covered in bites and we didnt stop at any enclosures because of them! Thats not this places fault though. I dont blame them a bit, I just wish someone in the reviews had stressed it more so I was more prepared. The welcome center does sell some but Im not sure how well it works.Okay, now for the review. Its $5 a ticket, $3 student ticket. So, it was $8 for my husband and I and it is WELL worth it. The trail, for the most part, is shady and its a nice walk. It is a trail though so its not stroller/wheelchair friendly but it is doable (see attached photos, thats what the trail looks like. Some areas are the wooden boards as well). The animals look healthy though I thought they all looked bored. Most were just laying or sitting there. Nothing for them to do in their enclosure like they would at a zoo and I thought most enclosures were a bit unkempt but there isnt anyone out mowing in the wild so I guess it makes sense.Take plenty of water and slather up in bug spray (honestly, even in 100° heat I would have worn long sleeves and pants had I known about the mosquitoes!!and have a great time! I would say you could easily spend 1 1/2 to 2 hours here if you are taking your time reading everything!
I found this place while Google things to do in Tybee Island and I was glad I did.My 15 year old and I went on a very HOT day in June. We had done the beach for multiple days and were ready for something different. When we pulled to the guard station and my daughter saw the prices - she said "wow, this is cheap!!!!!" As almost EVERY other activity we have done while on vacation has been $20-90/person.When we were done paying the attendant gave us a map and some information on parking and how to get around. We were able to park in the shade and close to the Welcome Center. There are restrooms, water fountains, a few animals/displays and a gift shop in the Welcome Center. We did the walk and it was nice. However, we forgot bug spray which I would definitely recommend. We did have sunscreen however most areas were shaded with the forest canopy. Also, some cold water. As I said they have a water fountain with bottle filler at the Welcome Center. There is also a vending machine towards the end with drinks but both selections for water were "Sold Out".We would have probably stayed a little longer if my 15 year old wasnt complaining about how hot she was and that she was getting bitten by mosquitoes. ;)If you love animals and dont mind walking this is the place to go. You can go at your own pace and enjoy the sounds of the forest as long as they are open. You cant beat the price. The gift shop, doesnt open til 10:30am, had a nice selection and also had bug spray (which we didnt know as we went there AFTER our walk)I would go back again!
Absolutely loved this place. We came mostly to view the wolves. We got there at the time the lady that feeds them showed up and the hung around the enclosure for about 10 minutes. Got some great pictures and interaction with them. We spent a total of 3 hours at the wildlife center.I even was able to buy a cookie from the tree that fed the wolves for a day. Basically a $40 donation to feed the wolves
Loved it.the wolves were giving us a show.the history to this place was great also.bought a cookie.check it out.it was to feed the wolves for the day
So glad we found this place, it was great to visit for a few hours. The visiting center had a few displays of different snakes and a nice gift shop, which had a few snacks and drinks. The walking trail was about 2 miles long and you can see the different animals as well as natural vegetation for Georgia along the way. It was a very nice walk. Highly suggest having a good amount of insect repellent as the yellow flies were very annoying. We would visit again as we really enjoyed the day.
Its totally worth your time. We came here, then went for lunch at the Crab Shack and finished the day by the beach. It was a great outing after spending a few days exploring Savannah. It is so different from the beach and the city. So, it gave texture and variety to our trip. A very peaceful walk, with pretty animals that have been rescued. Its nice to see people caring for these beautiful creatures.
A fun place to visit. Thoughtful exhibits and a nice 2 mile walk through a beautiful venue.
This was my first time visiting Oatland Island after hearing about it for years. I took an 11 year-old and we both enjoyed the walking trails and the animals. Talk about gorgeous natural setting for a wildlife center! Even though I live in the area, I couldnt get enough of the scenery. Staff friendly and helpful.
Awesome animals. Great walking area. Places to rest and have picnics. Will return.
Everything is kept so clean and the trails are well kept so its easy to walk through with kids and strollers.
What a gem. We have been here several times and each time we notice something different. The main building has a great deal of southern charm and the people who work there are so hospitable. The trails are wonderfully maintained and the animals on display are fabulous. A lovely place to spend a few hours or bring a picnic lunch and spend the day.
The wife and loved this walk through. Plenty of trails and animals to see. And for $5ea cant be better.
Entering is super easy, you get instructions and a map immediately! $5 per adult, and access to the whole trail. There are food trucks outside the main building. It’s an incredible trail, full of nature and exciting animals. We spent two hours here and could have easily spent 5 more if it wasn’t so hot outside! There are picnic tables and resting benches everywhere. I was blown away by how wonderful this experience was and will be coming back!
I love this place. Love the walk and helping animals. The marshwalks are great. The new lake is lovely though the duckweed has taken over. Two years ago, my mom and aunt came down. My mom wasnt able to make it all the way around due to illness. I wanted to show her the most amazing tree. She passed last year, so I took photos for her this year. Trees were our thing so you know she loved coming to Savannah. Go during the week for a less crowded experience. Covid regulations still apply. So be respectful of the hard working volunteers.
For only $3, this is well worth it and a great place for families and kids! It can get hot so prepare for the weather. Kids loved seeing all the animals.
We enjoyed spending a few hours here on new years eve. The trails were clean, clear, beautiful and shaded. We picked a perfect day to swing by. The kids really enjoyed spotting the animals and was fascinated watching the eagles eat. The lady we spoke with when we got there was really nice and informative. There was one deer that came up to the wall and stood up when my little girl spoke to him. It was the highlight of her day. 🥰🥰🥰🥰 I would suggest stopping in if youre in the area. The building was closed but there was a restroom at the petting zoo area that was very clean. We had to make a reservation online and it was only $12 for the 4 of us and I dont think I even had to buy a ticket for my 3 year old...double check the ticket age.
We visited Oatland off season during this damn pandemic. While I HIGHLY appreciated the distance the animals had between one another, and the place was beautiful as they let the local vegetation run amok in some places, I really wish they would have opened up the interior building.Theres restrooms cordoned off that are accessable & a gift shop that I believe was open. Directions were a little difficult to follow. But mandating distancing + face masks, theres no reason why the whole building couldnt be open. That said, I loved the quiet, spacing, exhibits and historical homestead that is on the property. This was a surprise visit for us to Savannah. And I recommend visiting here.Great for kids.
My family and I enjoy coming here. We have small children, and so we usually see about half of the park at a time, and that takes us about one and a half hours. There is a lot of walking involved, but we love the winding forest paths. There is even a boardwalk over the marsh.
I wasn’t sure what to expect here but was pleasantly surprised. It was a beautiful property and was a pleasure viewing the animals. Although it was raining the day we came it was still very nice. No one else was on the trials and we got to spend extra time watching the mountain lion and wolves. I don’t realize just how big mountain lions are! She was amazing to see so close. If my kids weren’t there I could have sat there for hours watching the wolves and mountain lion, they’re beautiful. They have a nice enclosed sitting area for the wolves which also has flying squirrels and a few other animals to see as well. I wish we had more time but it was raining a lot and we weren’t prepared but I’d definitely come back, especially for the price!
This is a great place to visit and take the family. Well design trail and the animals are well taken care of. Staff were excellent. Would definitely recommend for everyone to enjoy especially the Wolf exhibit. Had four beautiful Red Wolves that were not afraid of people. Had an amazing time.
Amazing park with perfect walking trails with beautiful sights and wildlife along the way. Bring your own water and quarters to buy food to feed the turtles. The prices are so reasonable that there is no reason to not go!
Today was our second visit, and we’ll be back again. The trail is relaxing and we love seeing the animals. The kids enjoyed the trip today.
Overall a fun family experience. Friendly for young children and by stroller. 1.75 casual walking trail that our 5 year old and 3 year old did well with. There are good animal exhibits along the trail. The double level of fencing shows that they go above and beyond to help protect their youngest viewers. A great place to bring a lunch as there are several picnic table locations near the parking lot/main building. Lastly, the main building has some really cool exhibits that are easy to miss if you aren’t paying attention. Their rates are $5 for adults, $3 for ages 4-17, and free for 3 and under.
Bit of a walk to cover the entire place but worth it. You can attend a presentation for a little extra were you can touch animals like baby alligators and snakes (in a controlled environment). You can try samples of the local honey they have for sale and be sure to visit the wolves if you need to cool off, their building has air conditioning. They also have a farm area where you can pet some of the animals as well.
Oatland Island is beautiful, relaxing, and educational. Toddler Tuesdays are amazing for the kiddos. The trails are well kept and easy to follow. I have severe ankle problems and can still manage these trails. The boardwalk on the marsh area has amazing views. There are plenty of animals to see. There is also information and a gift shop inside. The butterfly garden is quite adorable at the end
Our family enjoyed the long walks and the animal sitings. We enjoyed learning about the different wildlife, while enjoying the company of others with the same interests. The kids really enjoyed being able to be just kids!!!
I love the wildlife centre!!! They have exciting year-round events to get families involved with the animals. Beautiful butterfly garden and charming visitor centre. Incredibly reasonable prices!!
Still coming back from 2018s tornado but its open and beautiful. Nice walk, a talkative goose, enormous cow, bison, wolves... gorgeous. Well worth the 5 bucks per person.
An amazing trail hike with beautiful rescued animals. The facility is a non for profit and worth every penny! They take care of several species of animals that can no longer be left in the wild. Great for families and pack a bag with sunscreen, insect repellent and snacks. There are vending machines and I believe you can bring your own packed lunch as well. We loved it!
Decent day at oatland wildlife preserve. Although they were filming the poison rose at the main building at we were in a thunderstorm, we saw everything we could. The wolves were very active today and we were able to see them when being fed. For an extra $2 we were able to interact with an armadillo, an indigo snake, and an alligator inside the main building. For a special treat, they brought out one of the bald eagles. Pretty awesome.
Great place if you’re looking for something self paced and educational! Be mindful that most attractions are outside and in wooded areas with trails. In other words, wear appropriate clothing for being outside and walking on trails. Also, bug spray would be good for the little ones.
This place is AMAZING! We just had my sons 10th birthday party at Oatland Island and it was so perfect! The staff was amazing, especially our party host, she was so great with the kids and animals. The room was great with plenty of space and great accommodations. The animal exhibits are so amazing as well. We had the best time, would do it all over again.
This place is so cool. There are tons of animals to see and an awesome trail to walk along the way. Also very educational and cheap for what you get out of it. Highly recommend.
This place was great in theory but in reality the bugs are the worst Ive ever experienced in any zoo/widlife park setting. I went as a helper with my daughter and her class for their Pre K field trip. I really enjoyed the trails and seeing the animals but no matter how much bug spray or how many dyer sheets we used we could not escape the wrath of the gnats & mesquitos. I wouldnt mind visiting again but only on a nice winter day.
I recommend the Oatland Island experience for families & nature-lovers! Walk the salt marsh trails and see the animals! The delights along the trail include cougar & bobcat preserves, aviaries, wolves, & bison. We enjoyed strolling the trail. My only criticisms are suggestions. First, I think more signs along the trail to better help pedestrians find their way. Second, keep soap stocked in the restrooms. Otherwise, a fine, educational opportunity with a great natural backdrop!
Great place for an awesome hike with lots of stops for wildlife! Definitely a place kids will enjoy, but Id recommend bringing a backpack with extra water, because it gets hot out on the trails. Ask when they feed the wolves and get to the (air conditionedviewing area ahead of time for some great, up-close views.
Great spot to spend a few hours. TAKE BUG SPRAY ... We did not and everyone got bit up. The animals all seem well cared for and the staff was professional and seemed to enjoy what they do. We were disappointed that the cougar wasnt out, but the wolves and gators made up for it. 8 of us went and I believe it was only 25.00 for 2 adults and 6 kids. Worth the trip and a great price but please TAKE BUG SPRAY.
