1 Canal Dr, Sault Ste. Marie, ON P6A 6W4, Canada, Thessalon
Historic canal, built in 1895, featuring guided tours, trails, rental bikes & seasonal boating.
A good place to visit within Sault Ste. Marie and discover its history.
Lots of unexpected fall views and a warm introduction from the lock staff, its a historic sight well worth seeing
Mind blowing place just now, its worth visit and see the nature this time of the year.Beautiful colours nice cold weather on long weekend.Just go and explore your self
The canal is nice we parks fixed us some sandwiches. Definitely book for the agawa canyon. Unfortunately we didn’t but visit the brewery and winery!!
Learning about the Soo canal was fascinating. The site is being renovated so lots of the old buildings are not in use yet but you can wander the grounds, walk around, enjoy a picnic, cross the lock and walk on the islands to see the rapids.
Interesting nature walk on islands around the Canadian locks.
Beautiful grounds and lots of history. Make sure to go up to the emergency swing dam and see Canadian engineering at its finest.Nice walk on the island and a very cool historical place. Well kept grounds and easily accessible with plenty of free parking.
The park was closed, that is to say no staff on duty to tour the locks, but you could still walk around and see just about everything.
Great place, Lots to do and see. You can walk bike explore. lots of birds too. Nice view of the rapids, if ou never crossed a Lock in your life, here is your chance! A feel of Panama but at a smaller scale !
Pretty cool if you are lucky to see it. Had a good stroll along the boardwalk and the people who work there are informative and helpful
I threshing visit, a pity that some part of the lock are still under restoration and part of the boardwalk along the St Marys River was either gone or just flooded.
Very cool and interesting, historical stop.Recommended Soo Lock boat tour. Boat goes through the lock between the Lake Superior and the Lake Huron
Worth the visit. Theres more walking trails than we realized. Also, car parking lot has EV L2 chargers available.
There are a few gorgeous historical buildings in the area. The lock is still functional but for recreational use only. Unfortunately there was no traffic when we went (on two separate days), so didnt get the chance to see the lock gates moving.
Beautiful place to visit that is very well maintained!
we walked around the historical building. We then crossed the other side thru the lock bridge, there is a nice trail.
Not very visual actually. Not sure how to describe it.Looking at it takes a few minutes and everything around it doesnt necessarily make it that you want to stay longer.Parking was easy, the small visitor center is nice but otherwise.
Nice area. Didnt see boats coming through the locks. Area clean. Staff nice.
Lovely area to walk round. I took a dog and it was great. Few bits for him to go in the water thankfully as it was really hot.
A beautiful outdoor location to visit and get the history of the locks. Many short hikes to take in/around the lock/canal
beautiful well marked trails with nice observation decks. Bring bug spray, and pretty easy to ride on a bike.
Great place to visit I would recommend renting the sports bike to ride around the 3 islands and seeing the locks and great views. A must see if coming to Sault Ste Marie
Very interesting place. Combines history with some short nature trails.
One of my favourite places. Feeding ducks and chipmunks seeds (seagulls have no interest See ships and wildlife. Win Win
Amazing to view the technology, and simplicity of this transportation marvel. Just like its bigger counterparts on the commercial side, but you can get wonderfully close, for an immersion view
Love going and walking down the canal. My kids also enjoy the walks. They enjoy being able to go to whitefish Island.
Impressive infrastructure! You feel small walking through the park beside the canal and under the gigantic International Bridge.
A National historic site, a very exciting place for kids to see how a lock system works. You can walk across a lock to the other side and explore hiking trails that cover natural water ways. Some areas were partly covered by water even on a dry day. We managed to keep our feet dry by skipping over few rocks. Depending on water levels, the entire loop may not be possible. The shorter route making a left after entering the trails will get you to the closest observation deck, and the path was pretty dry.
Great stay at Bondar Marina.Fantastic meal at Montanas across the harbour.Terrific biking on the trails between the locks.Thoroughly enjoyed the Bushplane museum.
A nice place to explore and check out the Soo locks. Exciting for kids. Our kid received the Xplorers booklet from the Parks Canada staff; it’s filled with fun activities for kids. Continue on to Whitefish Island to enjoy some peaceful walks in nature.
We did not take the tour, just took a walk around. No entrance fee, no parking fee. Nice area to walk, for kids to roam around and for adults to learn a bit of history, whether mechanical history or the history of the lock. Info on display was good and educational. There are some short urban trails that connect the lock and the Whitefish island, overlooking to US.
This is a beautiful piece of Michigan history that is not talked about during history classes or geography classes. Parents should take this trip to the U.P. just for a trip through the canals. We really enjoyed the tour and the information.
We enjoyed a 2 hour tour of the locks from the soo locks boat company in mid August. Fortunately it was a perfect weather day. The staff was very friendly. There are drinks and basic snacks available for cash. Recommend getting in line as soon as possible to get a seat in the front of the upper deck viewing area. You are able to walk around on the boat during passage. Masks are required to be worn.
Visited there with the family. Check the boat schedule if u like to see the lift lock in action.
The SOO lock tour is absolutely wonderful to go on. Amazing to go through the locks and learn about all the history. Great tour and definitely worth the money
Visited via the Soo locks boat tour on the American side. Great up close experience with the locks. Several of the buildings have been restored here. The locks are free for any boat to use. Since the lock is small on the Canadian side it only accommodates pleasure craft.
This was a nice place to visit even during the winter period. Of course it would of been amazing in summer but nature has its beauty in green or white. Was a very relaxing experience and I will be going back in the warmer periods.
Went here with my family in the winter. This is easily one of the best walks I’ve ever been on. For us, this was a winter wonderland.
I enjoy history, we took a boat cruise that included dinner and a trip through the locks. Food and sights were great temperature was nice in July.
Historical sites are in the process of being renovated. Park staff in mobile store is lovely, Despite the surrounding neighbourhood, its still worth a drive to this site for a stroll around & walk some of the surrounding trails.
What a wonderful place to visit! So much to see! And a boat ride through the Soo Locks is well worth the time and money!
Very beautiful and historic place. Every day Boat ride passes from Lock Gate. Its really amazing.
It was a nice place to visit, but I feel like I spent too much of my time there. Going around the trail is only advised for bird lovers. It worth to check out the canal, its really interesting to see how they open the gates for a boat. If you go there around 7 pm, you can catch the train bridge turn around.
Amazing hiking trail. Great fly fishing, bird watching, and all around family friendly nature getaway without leaving town.
Beautiful place to go to on a summers day, can bike, drive or walk there. Have lovely, scenic trails on whitefish Island, on the other side of the canal. Can walk across the canal bridge, and sometimes watch as they drain the canal to open the doors to let boats or kayakers through. They sometimes host events here too, which is nice in the summer. I highly recommend the trails on whitefish Island, they are easy, accessible, and great to see up close the rapids.
I love going for walks here! Great pictures. Great for wildlife watching. Great for picnics. Def go here nothing but fun times to be had.
Great place to watch the ships moving in the great lakes!! Loved watching all of them go through the locks. Nice double platform for viewing. We went every day of our trip and saw everything from a river cruise ship to a few 1000 footers go through!
What a cool place! I really like the Canadian side of the locks better than the American. Theyre much smaller. We took a boat tour through the locks that takes you up the American side and back down through the Canadian side. There were people waving at us from the side of the locks that were visiting from the Canadian side. Pretty cool!
We were fortunate enough to still get tickets to ride a boat through the locks and back. The tell you the history of the licks, but also of the bldgs. that are all around. Very clean boat, friendly, and attentive staff who would answer any questions about the boat, lakes, ships, and sights. They also offer refreshments shortly after leaving the dock for a nominal charge, and restrooms are available for both sexes independent from each otherThough the tickets were a bit pricey, ( even with our discounts they were $30.00 each), I would certainly recommend this sensational tour of the locks between 2 of Michigans Great Lakes.
My family and friends enjoyed the historical information given as well as the relevant use information as we were on the boat. During the cruise we saw first hand how the locks operate as the water raised then released our boat out the other side. After a short cruise we returned to the locks and were lowered. Beautiful scenery on the Canadian side as well as the USA side.
