Sappho Live Jazz - Live music bar in Taipei, Taiwan
Sappho Live Jazz in Taipei
Description
Privilege
Cozy little jazz bar with 2 sets of groups performing. Cocktails and food are not bad.P.S. First time experiencing earthquake in the basement. Quite scary.
MoreStaff did not clarify there is 10% service charge (whether paying cash or carduntil drink has been served. Menu also did not specify this. Kinda ruined the classy feel to the place
MoreTop place for live jazz and blues music in Taipei. With a classy atmosphere, great cocktails and food its a must go hangout with a comprehensive monthly schedule with some of the best musicians in town regularly playing there. If you are a musician, dont miss out the weekly jazz and blues jams on Tuesday and Thursday.
MoreA small underground bar with amazing food and atmosphere! We had a wonderful night here. Highly recommend all Taipei jazz lover come here and enjoy the vibe.
MoreBest love jazz in Taipei
I lived in Shanghai for several years. I always went to JZ club...but since I moved back Ive seen several my favorite Jazz players at Sappho...I was amazed! Glad to have a decent Jazz bar in Taiwan... btw the stage setting is just like the old JZ :))
MoreA place to be for all music lovers. Great atmosphere, very good service, comfortable seating for enjoying the music.
MoreTuesday Jam night is so much fun!!! Taipei best jazz club. The musicians are really good. Decent food options and great drink selection! It’s chill and relax. Great place to unwind and listen to some good music. Live music always beats DJ. Small and cozy. Come here with friends or alone are all good.
MoreLive band was FANTASTIC!We went in to see a really great live band. However, the policies at the venue and some of the staff were appalling and confusing.1. Lack of clear communication on event page:There was a Facebook event posted BUT no mention that they sell a limited number of tickets (screenshot posted). Funny thing is that they insisted its written on the event page. Most bars with live music in Taiwan that we know are reservations to get a seat, but there is no cap on entrance and you can just walk in. We were there only for the music and to get some drinks and were happy to stand around for the gig. However, a number of my friends were told that they couldnt enter (I went there earlybecause there is a cap on the number of people allowed. BUT they kept letting other people in that they knew (people "in the scene"that was clearly not on the "list". This was when we could clearly see a lot of standing space available. This would have been alright if they communicated this properly prior to the event. We would have made reservations since this was a band we really wanted to see, its so easy to just do that.2. Poor service staff with no standards of service. While we tried to reason nicely with the staff, the lady at the door with short hair and glasses couldnt take the pressure. She started raising her voice and then had an outburst. She also started throwing things around on her table. She didnt offer a solution and was extremely rude. She might have had a bad day or just inexperience and couldnt handle the pressure, Ill give her the benefit of the doubt. But as a service staff, this is not really an excuse and it made the experience really bad.3. "Leave your number, you can come in as soon as someone leaves"Boss offered this solution, which was better but rather pointless. We went there for the music. Why would we go there if theres no music and pay for overpriced mediocre alcohol?4. Strange charging policies for alcohol. Before music started and there were lesser people, they didnt charge an additional 10% for the drinks if you paid in cash. They did mention if you pay by card, there would be that additional amount charged. Later on, they started charging additional 10% for the drinks even if you paid by cash. This would have been alright if it was a CONSISTENT fee. But to change it halfway through after weve bought so many drinks, is NOT ALRIGHT. It just sounds like youre leveraging on the crowd to earn more.5. Recommend others to pay immediately when you get your drinks. DO NOT hold a tab when its crowded. There were some strange charges that some of my friends had, we paid and didnt argue, but will not do that again. All in all, if theres a good band that you want to see, make sure you make a reservation to prevent a similar experience that we had. Dont walk in and assume youll be let in. And be careful of the charges here. I would still come because they do host pretty good bands!
MoreChristmas night, listen the live jazz here, what a great performance. Enjoy!
I think this is one of the best venues for live music in Taipei, although I preferred the old location.Pros:- The borders are closed so there arent (m)any touring musicians these days. Sappho seems to host some of the better local groups.- Service is pretty attentive, unobtrusive and not aggressive in pushing you to buy more drinks.- Cover prices and 1 drink minimum are reasonable for the better groups.Cons:- The venue can get quite loud. It seems like half the customers come to socialize and treat the performances as background music. The last time I came the singer was asking for the volume to be turned up because it was clear she was having trouble hearing.- The last time I came, the group didnt start on time and the drummer rushed in late. When a venue charges a cover, it should make sure performances start on time and demand professionalism from the performers.- Theres basically no social distancing and lots of people walk around without masks.Overall, Sappho is a fun place and the value is reasonable on the nights when they host good performers. I highly recommend checking the event schedule first and coming based on the performers as opposed to randomly showing up.Updated and removed a star as the past 2 times Ive come, the performance has not started on time. The last time, music started 15 minutes late and the performers were just hanging around talking and drinking. Not cool when youre charging a cover fee.
MoreVery personal and live music bands are constant headliners
Great place to enjoy live music with friends. Very friendly staff. The band is very good. Thursday was blues night. Drinks were stiff and not too sweet.
MoreGreat place to chill and have a cocktail or beer! This is the kind of place you should support :)
MoreThis place rocks. Great vibe, cool people, reasonably priced drinks. The music is fantastic.
MoreExcellent ambiance and a very good venue in which to listen to live music.
I performed here in 2016 and 2017 with Last Minute Latin Band while it was still in Xinyi. Lovely memories. Recently, I performed with the guys who do the Pink Floyd tribute. It was full of people who appreciate good music. Its closer to my place now too. Needless to say, I like this venue better. The owner is nice. They also have jazz and blue performances and jams. Looking forward to come back for more.
MoreReal Jazz in Taipei. Whats there not to like about that. Good and drink were good and reasonably priced.
MoreGreat music and great people. The best jazz bar in the country.
Great jazz live music and decent drinks!
What a great club! The live brass band we saw last weekend was awesome. We plan a return visit for sure.
MoreBest jazz music in town! Every Tuesday is the open jam day, so much fun!
Sappho Live Jazz was a small bar in an underground location in Taipei, Taiwan. I went there on a Saturday night hopping to enjoy some nice jazz music. There were about 60 people and the place was packed. The band was called The Flat Fives. The music and singing were just average. They played mostly swing music that night. There was a large group of young people dancing the swing. It was noisy. People talked very loudly. It was not a place to enjoy any jazz or nice music. The drink was average. The entry fee was 300 NT plus a minimum charge of 150 NT.
MoreThey host cool events here. Nice hangout for jazz fans. Food is average though
The place seems nice. Simple drinks and food are served. Sadly they where missing some musicians that night and the jam session started quite late.
MoreHow good the atmosphere is depends on the band/group that is playing. Drinks selection is good, but slightly expensive.
MoreGreat atmosphere, drinks, and staff. Make a reservation if you are able, otherwise arrive early! I will definitely go back
MoreGreat environment, young crowd. Drinks are at a reasonable price. Staff understand some English so all is good.
MoreTuesdays is jazz jam sessions, great place to be for cool jazz music!
What a beautiful, small hidden Jazz bar in the basement of a building. They really put some emphasize on having variation in their program
Moregreat atmosphere here. Table seat requires reservation beforehand.they charge a little bit higher entrance in friday night than weekdays (NT 300)
MoreMy first time to be in a bar, the jazz is so good there. Enjoy the atmosphere and alcohol.Need to notice that it will be charged ticket fee when there is a show.
MoreI love that this is a basement bar! Went to one of their Tuesday Jam Sessions, and absolutely loved it! People were generally friendly, and drinks not overpriced, which was great! Nice ambience with great music. Also very close to Daan Metro Station, only drawback is that the Metro system doesnt go till late so youll have to find alternative transport if you leave the bar late.
MoreIts authentic jazz music bar as same as the name. The enterence fee is 350NTD and beer is normally 200 NTD.The dishes are not more than 300 but it doesnt worth it.If you like jazz music, dont miss it
MoreLoved the place. Went on a Tuesday night improv Jazz with a few friends. Loved the the vibe, loved the musicians, loved the tap dance by Yuan Yuan. Met lots of friends. Food and drinks were good too. Definitely want to go again and again.
MoreVisited on a Sunday evening and loved the country / rock ambiance. Definitely a place worth to check out but be aware as different evening may have different event / theme.
MoreLocal hub where all the real musicians meet. Decent and affordable food options. Open late...San Miguel on tap.
MoreWe visited this bar on a Sunday evening after finding it on the web. Blues Society of Taiwan jam evening. Travelers from all over the world that plays blues and is visiting Taipei, meet here. Light meals, some not available, beer on tap and other drinks. Small and intimate venue. Entertaining - Highly recommended!
MoreBest jazz in town. Very international and professional. Low cover fees and cheap drinks
MoreAgain, hands down the best jazz in Taiwan. Very international and wide variety of jazz can be found here. Id never thought Id hear country blues + bo diddly style here in Taipei.
MoreSappho is cozy and fun. Went for a story-telling event. Happy hour prices are not bad. There was one bartender and one waitress working. There were too many customers for them to take care of properly. Management should consider hiring more staff.
MoreHappen to see hubbys favorite guitarist Michael jamming on the stage on that nite.. Super cool 😎! We won the lucky draw prize as well...
MoreGreat for music till late. We went on Saturday night when there were some musicians in from Hong Kong. Great vibe and we stayed till 1 o clock. 400 TWD to get in. Beer & cocktails good. No one was eating and Id not suggest the food as the menu is limited and there are so many alternatives nearby.
MoreFood is the smallest size I’ve ever seen in my entire life. The jazz music is fine . However, the service is good ,so It worths two stars.btw the price is not equal with Quality ,too expensive .
MoreOld style bar. Many round sofas. Food is big sized and bartenders are nice. Nice drink. But I dont feel comfortable in it while listening to bands.
MoreMy friend took me there on a Sunday. You have to buy a drink at least. The performance starts at 9.30pm. Good atmosphere it seems that most of the people know one another there and occasionally bring acquaintainces. I appreciated both performances with different styles.
MoreSunday night is great for R&B music and dancing. Sappho is downstairs. Cozy atmosphere.
MoreReally great unpretentious jazz bar. Saw some great musicians perform jazz/hip-hop in a Taiwanese/Japanese collaboration. Comfortable place, good drinks.
MoreThis place is awesome! Cool atmosphere, great music, be sure to chat with the bartender Bambi, her English is exceptional.
MoreLimited bar selection, limited menu, and limited helpfulness from the staff at an aging jazz club. They have some good bands occasionally, but if you dont know the jazz scene well, money may be wasted on a cover for an unimpressive band.
