City views spread from this hilltop, 9th-century Muslim castle, with history museum & guided tours.
Absolutey stunning ! Must see .. Beautiful panoramic view of the city and the beach Postiguet and also you can learn something about old fortress. It’s free entrance if you go by foot but it’s little bit hard or take an elevator from the beach Postiguet for 2,70€ per person.
The ticket and lift employees are friendly and helpful and the views are stunning on a clear day. This is an exhausting walk (even after the liftin hot weather.
Castillo de Santa Bárbara: Impressive, spectacular, majestic! How to get to the top: use the elevator or commit to at least 1 hour walk. What to expect: a history lesson about the Alicantes fortress, and a 360 degrees view of Alicante from the top of the mountain! What you will discover: A place to breath and pulse of Alicantes historical and geographic identity!Bonus: free entry and open every day of the week between 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
beautiful fortress, beautiful environment, great trip within Alicante, when on the way back you can roam the old streets with beautiful corners.
If youre going to Alicante, you really must go and see Santa Barbara castle. There are three options for getting there. The one I did was a long walk up which was really great with fantastic views. Youre other option is to use cable car or a bus or taxi and then walk down once youve looked around.I would recommend going early if youre walking up because it does get hot during the day. It opens at 10:00 a.m. so if you set off about 9:00 a.m. you should have plenty of time to walk up there. Do take water with you 😎
Views of and from Alicante castle Santa Barbara: Unexpected gems to be uncovered by the inquisitive wanderer! Soothing views in the last glimmers of sunshine and the first rays of moonlight make the city and surroundings look much softer and attractive. The castle of Santa Barbara appears totally different from the hills on its southwestern corner. And the unique view point offers an amazing palette of sceneries from the see, overview of the city to the far, dry hills inland. The castle is surrounded by a large and think wall; the whole complex is surprisingly expansive and invites for a stroll into another time.
Wow... it is absolutely breathtakingly beautiful 😍 The views are amazing and it is a privilege to have experienced the history of the castle.
seagulls are aggressive, impossible to fly your drone without them attacking it. if u do fly it u can get some banger shots
Wonderful place with incredible views. We took a taxi up and then walked down afterwards. Once you get to the top the views are truly magnificent over the city of Alicante, the colour of the sea is just perfect. It is also free of charge to visit which is an added bonus.
Entry free castle you have to Walk to reach top of castle lift is also available you will get panoramic views of alicante from the castle there is a small horror museum in castle also small museum of old artefacts
Lovely views from the top, good access to first level via lift, enjoyable experience, good suprize show at the top of the grounds
This place is huge. Layers of fortifications along with exhibits of pottery, banners, a clock mechanism and sculptures. You can catch a bus or taxi to the top, walk up or catch a lift from a tunnel that is accessed from the promenade. Look for the signs and opening in the cliff face! The views from the top are tremendous if the weather is kind. There are refreshments available from a kiosk, or limited menu of meals and snacks from a cafe and terrace. The lift is €2.70 but free for pensioners.
A great walk up to the castle meandering through the side streets and cafés. A free and very relaxed historical place with great panoramic views. Staff were friendly.
We love visiting castles on our European adventures! This one is exceptional with wonderful panoramic views. Ladypsychiatristsbooth.com
Admission is free for pensioners, so what can I say? Excellent! In fact I would have rated it excellent anyway.Even in the dry some paths were slippery, so wear shoes with grippy soles.
Lovely castle. Been wanting to go for a long time and I am glad I did now. If you are in Alincate dont give it a miss. Also there is a lovely, friendly coffee shop terrace.
When in Alicante, dont miss a trip to the Santa Barbara Castle overlooking the town. Whilst you can drive up to the top it is a nice walk with great views. I recommend a guided tour as it will give you access to otherwise restricted areas. There are also amazing views from the top!
Great place to visit and free. Views from the top are amazing and also plenty to see inside the castle . You can walk up which is good as you can also take in surrounding scenery which is spectacular. There is also a lift by the beach on the front that will take you to the castle for a small fee . Would definitely recommend visiting here when in Alicante 👍
Amazing 360 panoramic view from the top. The hike is really easy, the whole path paved. Theres even an elevator going straight up from the beach to the castle. A must in Alicante.
Visited twice during a city break to Alicante, walking up both times. There is a lift which is accessed from the promenade area, for which there is a small charge, otherwise the castle is free to enter.Very impressed. I have visited a lot of castles in my time and this one is fantastic! The outer walls and some of the larger structures are intact. The displays inside are interesting and appropriate.... however the views on a sunny day are what make the visit awesome.Although there are ramps, some of the paths are steep and uneven, so care must be taken.
A must-see place when you visit Alicante. Features some of the best views of the whole city. You can either climb one of the few pedestrian routes or take an elevator upstairs. I highly recommend going down via Ereta park for best views, and then straight into the Santa Cruz district, which is stunning itself.
When you go upstairs, the view is amazing.. we didn’t go inside the castle because we went during the time of the sunset, which is when the castle is closed. But truly worth it to see the view from upstairs🤩
What a fabulous place to visit... the level of repair to this ancient fortification is top notch.. and the views are fantastic...Theres a lift that takes you all the way to the top..
Had a good walk up to the castle taking in the views of Alicante then spent a very pleasant time looking around the castle grounds and artifacts. There is cafe selling food and drinks at reasonable prices allowing you time to catch your breath and reflect on the history of the castle.
A really interesting place to visit. My first time here was 1977, so much has been restored since then. Really well presented.
Easy access with elevator, which costs 2.7 € for adults ✅Very beautiful view of the city and lovely castle 👌🏻You can also walk inside the castle. We returned on foot, which was amazing 👌🏻Highly recommend to visit
Lovely castle in Alicante, Spain. Free to enter, you only pay a small fee to go up in the lift as there is an attendant to take you up and down. Steeped in history, wonderful views from the top. You can also walk up from the other side, very easy walk. Cafe for refreshments and other kiosks and picnic areas. Dogs are welcome, car parking isnt allowed at the moment but there is also a minibus going up and down, walking is very easy. There are a few areas to negotiate requiring a bit more physical effort but these are easily avoided. Well worth a visit a lovely afternoon here for people of all ages.
Its 2 Euros of you take the lift, free of you dont. Once up there the views are amazing and you get a bit of a history lesson too. And the outside cafes will even serve you a beer. A highlight of Alicante.
A great place - I just love the view of Alicante from the castle..
Okay so I made the mistake of visiting this place at night and if you’re like me PLEASE BRING A FLASHLIGHT. i almost died climbing the stairs and walls a thousand times but that was MY FAULT. the castle is absolutely beautiful and incredibly preserved. There’s tons of cats that roam the premises as well at night. I would love to go see it during the day so I can have an even better experience. The views from each lookout are insane also!
Impressing remains of the old fortifications with a stunning view. There is a a lift near the beach which can bring you up and down for 2,70 Euro.
Absolutely fantastic, the view is incredible from the top. We walked up and got the lift back down
Make sure your cameras/phones & spare batteries are fully charged It is not just a walk in the park, and Castle (in sensible shoes for steps & some cobbles), but there are brilliant views across and around Alicante, its mountains and beaches, to Benidorm & its Island to the NE, Tabarca Island and Santa Pola to the SW. The mind boggles at the geology, geography, archaeology and historic occurrences.Google Maps links to The Ayuntamientos website, which has good information, including public transport and the Lanzador CSB bus which runs between the MARQ museum and the Castle, from 23/12/21, except on certain public holidays. The entrance to the Castle and Park Ereta, car parking midway up Mont Benacatil, and toilets are free. The restaurant/kiosks in the castle have reasonable prices, but cannot always accept credit cards. Some people mention the antenna/s on the Castle, but few complain about the wifi signal or consider the likely need for a lightning conductor. There are entrance paths to Parque Ereta from the west near Mercado Central tram Station, which joins the road to the entrance; from the north from MARQ-Castillo tram station, and from the east from C. Virgen del Socorro. Not all paths lead to the Castle entrance. Check your maps and calendars. Google Maps says it is not open on New Years Eve or New Years Day.I prefer to take water E0.18 & chocolate croissants (E125/bagfrom Mercadona and walk up from Mercado Central &/or the road, then after the visit, walk down over the bridge towards the old City centre towards the sunset and night lights. Restaurants become more economic as you approach the old centre. 18 degrees C is forecast on 31/12/2021, but earlier or later is better for avoiding the heat during summer months, even though there is usually a refreshing breeze. I discovered how deep the moat was, as the wind blew my hat down there, as I passed from the road through the entrance. For those who struggle to get up from the beach, or back again, the access to the lift (ascensorto Santa Barbara is across the N332 avenue opposite the police station midway along Postiguet Beach, 100 metres west of the white, lifeguard tower. It should be the quickest way up (E2.70 or free for over-65s with photo-IDto the Castle, or down (free). I did see queues when tour groups arrived before Covid-19, but a reservation (citasystem was introduced for periods when restrictions are lifted. The views improve as you go, so walk, sip, photo as the scenery changes. As they are designed to repel invaders, accessibility is not a strong point of fortresses, but most steps have alternative ramps nearby. Some walls have low parapets hiding a steep drop, so keep hold of children in this adventure ground, and take care where you step or sit when taking a 360 degree panorama or a selfie. I compliment the personnel who maintain and keep the place running unobtrusively, although they are there to help when needed. Congratulations to Alicante for providing a top-notch attraction at minimal cost to visitors. The visit is educational for all ages, but exhibits have to be based on what has been found, rather than what archaeologists might like to have discovered.Further west is the Castillo San Ferran/Fernando, which is undergoing work, while Lucentum, Albufereta and La Illeta, near El Campello, have Roman remains. All of those sites are near the tramlines, with a standard E1.45 fare.If you like walking, there are other paths in Parque Ereta and on Serra Grossa.
Busier than I expected but it was a beautiful, warm day, and Christmas Holidays! Only 2.70€ for the lift. A wonderful place for history and culture, and fantastic views. A couple of places for drinks and toilets are available. Difficult for people with mobility issues so we stayed on level 2. Still worth the visit.
Great castle with a stunning view over alicante. You can go up by lift (2.70 euroot by foot or Both. The castle is very clean and you have 3 places to eat and drink. A place you have to visit while you are in alicante. Take half a Day to visit because its a big castle and very intresting.
Free entrance and a wonderful view over the city. Spend however long you like there! Clean restrooms and lots of spots to sit down and enjoy the sunshine. Very beautiful if you take the southern stairs up via the alleyways.
An absolutely amazing visit. The views couldnt have been better on the hike up or down. And its a castle! Seriously worth the time to visit.
A beautiful walk around this ancient fortification. Admission is free and it allows to enjoy a beautiful 360 view of Alicante and surrounding. Inside there is also a little bar where is possible to have a rest.
Beautiful castle to visit. A magnificent view over Alicante. My daughter and I took the lift upstairs. Walking is also possible.
We had to walk cause the lift was out of order but it was definitely worth it. (google Ascensor castillo Santa Barbara if you are looking for the lift)Take some water with you! There is one small outdoor bar very close to the top but they dont accept card payments. The "restaurant" with the view has outrageously slow and poor service. So take your own drinks or cash. The view though speaks for itself.
Midweek visit in November. Plenty of people there but not at all crowded. We walked all the way from the bottom though there is a small car park part of the way up. You dont have to be super fit to walk it, just take it steady. The weather was a pleasant 22 degrees which was hot enough. Lots of information in several languages. There is a wheelchair lift for access into one of the more difficult to reach exhibitions. The toilets are clean and there are at least three places where you can buy refreshments. Fabulous views of Alicante from numerous vantage points and a real sense of the scale of the castles defensive position. Well worth a visit. Oh, and its free!
We went on historical secret walking tour and therefore taxied to the top and walked down. If not would be a steep walk. Worth it for the views. Breathtaking. Tour worth it as didnt see any signs of information at top. Hidden restaurant in park at top. Looks lovely was told that its well known and expensive. Would not be suitable if you have any walking issues.
Prepare yourself, take some water and escalate the little top of the Santa Barbara Castle.Great view of the city, beautiful flowers and the castle itself is worth the travel.Nice and free activity - Recommended
This is a must when visiting Alicante. I go further and say this should be your first choice. Takes about 40mins to ascend from the harbour with a few stops to catch your breath. No need to ascend too quickly. Its nearly 170m above sea level. The views are amazing from the bottom and from the top. Just superb. There are cafes at the top to give yourself a treat. It looked daunting to climb when looking at all those stairs. People with mobility issues might struggle but you can get a cab to the entrance but still a bit of an ascent to the top. I spent nearly 2 hrs just admiring the view. It wasnt crowded and entrance is free. Mask are required for certain rooms.
Great experience visited 6/10/21 currently the lift to go up from main road is still closed there’s no information I could find on it, however you can take a taxi up from the beach costing around €5. Once your up there it’s free and loads of sweet spots to take pictures.
Beautiful castle and the view you get from the top is amazing! I can only recommend talking a stroll up there in the evening when it is not that hot anymore (during summer). It was a highlight for our trip to Alicante.
Amazing views across Alicante, there is so much history in this castle. Set on top of a hill - thankfully theres a lift to get you up there - there are plenty of photo opportunities, and make sure you go on an evening as the view at sunset is not to be missed!
Its pretty challenging to climb up to the castle in a hot sunny day but hey! Totally worth it! Beautil view overlooking the city and castle by itself is very interesting too.You can find here public toilets and little Cafe.
This is an absolute MUST see in Alicante. The views are incredible.Short little hike up the mountain. There is a little bar at the top to drink beer/water etc.Check opening times - only opens late mornings. The castle is well looked after!
The Castillo de Santa Barbara is a place to visit. Make sure you have a plenty of water and try to climb a little early or late in the afternoon.I have done it at noon and nearly had a stroke. The views from the top are breathtaking. You can rest for a while in a little cafe on the top.
