Compact, 17th-century Buddhist monastery in a remote area on a hill accessible via hike.
Considered to be the oldest monastery in Sikkim, this place offers a serene and joyful ambiance with lots of little cheerful lamas.
Wonderful and adventurous place on high hills
Beautiful place.. located on top of mountain... Very peaceful...around 2 om from upper pelling
The Oldest Monastery of Sikkim.. Where I found a peaceful place above the a ridge top.. But this will scare you to look down the ridge..
A very peaceful, serene and “raw” monastery. Very old and still maintaining the essence of being such an old piece of history. Do visit it in your visit to Chenzerig Statue/Skywalk. The path (3-4 minutes walkleading from the statue to this monastery is very beautiful. You will witness a lot of locals engaged in their daily chores. Have a chit chat with them. They are genuinely very nice and honest people.
Pleasant place to visit
Very beautiful place. Situated with skywalk. U hav to put ur shoe off.Two way to climb here.Around 100 stairs to climb there. There is a shopping available here. Inside the monestry nice experienceU ll also get a beautiful view from the monestry. Overall nice place to enjoy
One of the oldest monastery in Sikkim india.
What a big and beautiful monastry....there is about 170 steps to reach the monastry...also you have to go through little bit of skywalk experiences....very very beautiful ..... must visit place of pelling.....
Situated just next to the sky walk in Pelling. Unfortunately, the place does not have proper route that creates confusion among visitors and a lot of people dont end up visitng this place.
One of the Oldest Buddhist Monastery in India. Slightly difficult to locate so it is recommended to ask the local people about it. The monastery is beautiful and also offers amazing view of Kanchenjunga from the top.
One of the oldest monastery of Sikkim is a must visit for those who are in search of inner peace .
After an hour of trekking we three friends reached the Monastery. these young monks helped us with water, all the tiredness & fatigue were just gone in one go. Such a wonderful place it was.
Sang Ngag Choling Monastery, popularly known as Sanga Choling Monastery is one of the oldest monastery in Sikkim as well as India. Established by Lama Lhatsun Chempo in 1697 A.D. among the picturesque settings of the majestic Himalayas, this old yet simple monastery still attracts the attention of Buddhist people as well as travellers around the globe. Following the Vajrajan Buddhism and Tibetan architectural style, this place draws reverence. Sang- Ngag means guhya mantra and people believe this place still practices those sacred culture. A vist to Pelling is incomplete without a visit to this Sacred monastery.
One of the must visit place in Pelling. It has Indias first skywalk also there as a tourist attraction. The road to the monastery is very steep, narrow and has back to back to hairpin bends. So a taxi is preferred unless you are a pro driver. The place has a grand statue of Jamantak inside. The view of Kanchenjunga from the place is awesome and no doubt one of the best.
Great place to see the view of the Kanchenjunga and relax.
Sanghak Choeling monastery can be better enjoyed after an uphill trek than arriving on a vehicle. It is located atop a steep hill with a beautiful panoramic view of the Himalayas. It is one of the oldest monasteries in Sikkim. It gives a breathtaking view of the mountain ranges in Sikkim.
Can not explain its environment.....I just love it. Please dont miss.
Beautiful and peaceful location
To view Mt. Kanchenjunga, this is one of the best place. Very clean n green place. Extra attraction is the Sky walk
The monastery is located on a ridge top above Pelling at a distance of 7 kilometres (4.3 mifrom Pemayangtse Monastery and is accessed by walking the steep hilly track of 4 kilometres (2.5 mi), which traverses through rich forest cover
This is just adjacent to the skywalk Pelling. Maximum time it is covered by clouds. Nice place at the top of the hill near to Pelling city.
Spectacular place. Very good view of Kanchenjunga and entire Pelling city. The glass skywalk is the main attraction here
Sky walk is very good . Because its a Product of make in Indian . Its made by totally glasses . Here is a Monastery thats oldest monastery of Sikkim . ESTABLISHED in your of 1642 AD .
Its very Om Shanti. The monastery itself is peaceful. The mega Buddha across from it not so much. Good views from the top if its clear out. Expect lots of people at the attraction as the Sky Walk is located there ... So you get the Riff Raff who arent really interested in Buddhism. Theres a couple of tea shops up there as well.
I loved every bit of the visit to this monastery. The monks were so cordial and kind. For the first time I saw a set of instruments being played by the younger monks which was a treat to watch. There were prayers starting soon after we visited. We were invited for that and asked to sit. Also, they offered us tea and something to eat which totally overwhelmed us.Also, it is one of the oldest monasteries in Sikkim.
Excellent experience. The place is full of various enjoyment so its better to keep sufficient time for total satisfaction. Decoration and wall painting is just mind blowing, peaceful. From roof of the monastery the down view is excellent, sky walking another special treat.
Love this place. The mountains, clouds everything.
Beautiful place situated at a good height. A huge Buddha Statue. Indias first Sky Walk...
Beautifully built on a hill top with amazing scenery around it.
The combination of the monastery and the skywalk is really mind blowing... It is the must visiting place in pelling... The skywalk is the mini version of chinas glass bridge... The scenery of the hills from the top of the monastery is such a bliss... This is the best place.. I love this place and also I want to visit this place again... This place is well maintaining... Neat and clean.. There is the another kind of calm and peace... 😇
The Monastery is on the highest hilltop of Pelling and is a place for some amazing views with the glass Skywalk too.Nice place to visit early morning before it gets busy. On a lucky clear day the Kanchenjunga becomes visible too 🙂
Well worth the time. A must see.
Beautiful place in Pelling West Bengal. The old monastery is calm and not many people come to visit here. The new one is beautiful and people keep flocking in numbers. The newest attraction here is the Skywalk. If you want to enter here you have to spend 50 each. The entire place has speakers and Om Mani Padme Hum is played. Stay back one night and trek this place.
Absolutely worth visiting although the huge Buddha statue up the hill was inaugurated only in 2018. The monastary has beautiful paintings in the entrance area. Unfortunately I was there too early in the morning to see the inside of the temple. AND a perfect view point to see the mountains including Khangchenjunga.
Great monastery near to Pelling skywalk. Nice architecture and views.
The Sang Gnag Cholling Monestry was built in 17th century and the oldest Monestry of sikkim is situated adjacent to Chenrezig Statue in Pelling, West Sikkim. Another great attraction to tourist visiting west sikkim. Very cum and cool place.
Very beautiful place. Ropeway facility is available here. The ticket price is 50rs. Very beautiful view
I visited Pelling on last February and decided to visit Sangachoeling Monastry on a clear sunny chilly morning. It is located at the top of the Hill and the drive was bit challenging. There are some sharp hair-pin bends and it is not suggested to travel there without an experienced driver. It took me around 15 mins to reach there from Upper Pelling. There is also an option to trek. Due to time constraint, I couldnt opt for that. Sangachoeling Monastry is one of the oldest monastries of Sikkim. Entry to this monastry is strictly restricted to Bhutia and Lepcha Communities. Mens from these two communities are only allowed to enter inside the monastry. However, you can enjoy the fabulous view of the ancient monastry from outside. Although the Sanga Choeling Monastry has some ancient and religious value, however one of the major attraction of this place is the gigantic statue of Chenrezig. Height of the statue is 135ft from the base of the pedestal. One need to climb approx 100 stairs to reach to the top. Parallelly there is a slope from the left side of the statue for wheelchair accessibility. You can hire wheelchair from the main entrance. I got fabulous valley view with Mount Kanchenzangha and other himalayan ranges from top of the statue. Another attraction of this place is the sky-walk made of glass. You can get my review and photos about that under "Sky walk Pelling Sikkim" as I believe that it need to be described separately. There is two-wheelers and four-wheelers parking area near to the entrance. The monastry is open for all visitors from 9am to 6pm throughout the week and entry fee is Rs. 50 per person. I spent around 1.5 hrs to explore the entire place along with the glass sky-walk. I stayed at upper pelling but if you want to stay near to the monastry, then The Pellling Hotel and Norbu Ghang Resort are two good options. Among these two, Norbu ghang is bit expensive. Alternatively you can opt for an accomodation at Upper Pelling and pay a day visit to the Monastry and Pelling Helipad. Both are located on the same road. I found the geographical location and surroundings of the Monastry was much more appealing compared to Pelling Helipad.
beautiful place and beautiful maintain view
Indias first Skywalk & monestry in Sikkim
Beautiful place with skywalk. Has a beautiful statue of cherengy, a Buddhist God of compassion.
One of the best kept old monasteries in Sikkim. Located on s stunningly beautiful hill top near Pelling in West Sikkim. Panoramic view of the snow peaks is breathtakingly beautiful. The main monastery has a architecture is in full harmony with the surrounding natural beauty. It has some interesting fresco paintings and idols inside.
So quiet place.... reached after 30 minutes of walking from upper pelling (playground), the road and slope are good enough...
Such a beautiful and peaceful Monastery. We went there after having our lunch. Fortunately the weather was too good that day and it was all sunny... The Kanchenjunga was clearly visible. The Monastery is on top of a hill and I personally loved the pleasant breeze.. I wanted to stay there for longer. It was sooo majestic, so peaceful..
Great place for visit. I recommend everyone to visit this place once. Get a great view of Kanchenzongha from here. This is a upscale place. Need to visit here by walk little bit. However great 360 degree view. Very calm monastery. It is possible to visit by car. However road is very steep.
Sanga Choling monastery is located on a hill top at the rear of the town of Pelling in the western part of the state of Sikkim.Built in 1697, the monastery is the creation of Gyalwa Lhatsum Chempo, and is exceedingly acclaimed among the followers of the Nyingmapa sect of the ancient school of Tibetan Buddhism.Entry into the Sangachoeling Monastery is strictly restricted to the Bhutia and Lepcha communities. An old crematorium is located near the Sangachoeling Monastery, which has seen use from last three centuries.
The 4km trek that afternoon around 4, through thick vegetation cover accompanied by a light drizzle, with no other soul in sight is memorable, October 2011. The monastery is one of the oldest in India. You can see a few young lamas around. A quiet place, very serene.
The 25-30 minutes walk that you have to undertake from upper Pulling to reach this place is absolutely worthy. The reasons are the picturesque panaromic views of the Himalayan ranges and Pelling town that this place offers. Furthermore, you will also get to explore one of the oldest monasteries in Sikkim.
Heres a TOP TIP when walking up to this place (and downthere is a short cut on the left of the road that runs up alongside the water pipes, look out for them as you ascend. The Monastery itself is very small and chances are therell be a few young monks having a kick around in between studies.Great views from up here (weather dependingand its generally a nice place to sit and chill for a few hours if your that way inclined.
