Nice views and sceneries. Worth coming. Just that the cafe was on off day.

Interesting historical place with a cafe and free car park.

Im glad it is opened again, enjoyed watching sunset and overlooking Wakefield.

Been here several times, once during a frosty, sunny morning and the remains of the castle are very good.Views from the tower are excellent and to be able to access the moat is a bit special, although the shrubbery needed trimming.There are plenty of benches on the pathway around the perimeter so you could just sit and chill a while, otherwise the visit could be no more than 45 to 60 minutes.Free parking. Visitor centre on site.It is a pity that some idiots had left a shopping trolley and party litter around the motte.

Not much of the castle left to view, information boards are located around the site which are ok. Lovely view point. Free to visit, close to Pugneys so you can make a day of a visit

Lived down the road from here all my life and never been.It was a nice walk round with a stop off at the cafe.There are information boards all around telling you the history of the castle.Dog friendly, in the cafe too.

This is a free, fun, historical, educational place to visit in Wakefield. The car park is free and you just wander around as you want, you can walk all around the remains and there is a brilliant viewing platform on top of what was the keep. The signage used is informative and interesting. These good remains of what was once an impressive hilltop Castle and keep are well worth a visit for an hour or so.

Would be nice to visit but the shine is taken away due to all the dog mess and rubbish, because this place isnt locked on a night, people come on drinking... Cant understand why local people take there dogs on here, the local area is full of fields and walks but for some reason decide to walk round the castle 10 times,, Im sure most pick up there mess but as always the few ruin it for the many, there is a lot of mess in the grass and down the bottom bags full of mess and even some wrapped in toilet roll.

Really lovely castle ruins area, there is a few walks off in different directions a lookout area and some info boards so you can understand what you might have been looking at.Within the grounds area there is a coffee shop and a small (freecar park.Kids loved running up and down the hills and pretending to be knights!

Great place to walk your dog they have a chihuahua pack walk every Thursday and Sunday at 6pm there is also a cafe but Im not sure of the opening hours

Nice to see a free to visit castle. Layout good some dementia explanation boards and thebon site cafe was a real bonus. Great views over surrounding region.

Good place for families to hangout.Nothing special about this place but good views and ambience makes this place a good choice for weekend trips.

Stunning views from the top of the Castle definitely worth a visit, there is a cafe but not always open.

Really nice place to visit. Perfect for the kids. Lots of places you can walk to from here too. Been coming here since I was little. Some good improvements been made over the years.

Have visited many times for a quick walk with the dog whilst passing. Previously just did a circuit around the outside of the moat, but there are now recently completed renovations which make the visit more enjoyable eg they have replaced the bridge over the moat so you can now cross into the bailey, and also the steps up the side of the Mott (sadly neither I nor my dog are capable now of making that climb - age has gotten us both!so we wandered around the bailey looking at the new information boards and peering down the well! Some parts of the stonework have been restored - now dont get me wrong - they havent rebuilt the keep or anything like that - there isnt a lot left standing but the work that has been done has enhanced what there is and made the site more interesting. Its usually a bit breezy up there tho so take a jacket...and it is still free to visit.

Lovely walk around the castle with excellent views over Wakefield. There is a wonderful cafe there, dog friendly and the best carrot cake you will ever have. If we were away from home and found this place we would be delightedSo count ourselves very lucky to have it on the doorstep.

The youth of today dont seem to understand the can of lager requirement to visit when unsupervised, although remain boisterous. Well done to the groundsman for using nature to fence off the bits youre not meant to walk up. Also a thanks to Wakefield Council for charging to park at Pugney, or I probably wouldnt have visited the castle instead, where its still free to park. Will consider the walk down to the lake next time and save another £2.50 for parking. Just remember to watch out for the dog pooh on the verges.

Fantastic viewpoint, gets extremely busy, a good cafe, a little expensive but great location especially if warm enough to sit outside.I have been coming here since being a small child, and the attraction was always to scramble up the ruins, theyre so inviting! I understand the erosion problem, however as it stands its just a pile of stones with some window arches that have been rescued/rebuilt. I dont know what the historical significance is, a lot of the stone was removed by locals for housing in the area, e.g. Malt Kiln Croft. What remains is underwhelming as a castle, but still a great spot for a walk and to take in the views.Controversial questions:Are we over sentimental? should we let some ruins go, and not waste the time and money, i.e. support the National Trust and English Heritage exclusively, and just have a viewpoint here?

Wonderful historical place. And also great for walking/jogging.Lovely views from top of the hills across Wakefield.Enjoyable with friends and family. Parking is easy, and the footpaths are nice and level so great for anyone with mobility problems. Perhaps limitations would occur if wanting to get close to some of the ruins.

Really nice little place, great for a nice saunter or a picnic. The history of the area is incredible and information boards are plentiful, although to get the full picture of the history I had to do a little googling. Parking was easy and free. Stunning views of the nearby reservoir but be prepared for a fair few steps! Most of the area is accessible on flat ground but some of the more interesting parts are up or down stairs

No charge to enter. Interesting. Lovely circular walk through the fields surrounding Sandal Castle. Information boards. Good parking and cafe open during the day. It doesnt take long to look round. We visited Newmillerdam on the same day which made it a nice day out. Plenty of pubs serving food in the area between Sandal Castle and Newmillerdam.

I Visited Sandal Castle Café For Lunch And Was Treated To A Wonderful Large Bacon And Mushrooms Sandwich And A Good Sized Mug Of Caffè Latte. The Interior Was Wonderful And Clean And The Staff Were Very Friendly And Welcoming. There Is Seating Both Inside And Out And With Sandal Castle As Its Backdrop This Is One Of The Nicest Places Around To Seek Refreshments On A Warm Day Such As This. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 10/10 Borderline Eleven 😎Photographs Are © Paul (PòlRuddock Photography 2022.

Beautiful scenery despite Wakefield in the background and lovely to see the remains of this castle. Its nice that its free as well. Its a decent walk around too and theres a nice cafe.

Lovely for a short stroll with free parking, albeit limited. We generally go here early on a weekend when its least crowded.Fantastic panoramic views across to Pugneys and Wakefield city. Lots of dog walkers. Strikingly clean and well maintained paths.Cafe looks friendly but never tried.

I love this place, you can feel the history as you walk through the ancient ruins of what once was, I visited on a night to set up my new tent ⛺️ and mess with the Drone. You cant stay long when it is dark, as the creepers will soon arrive, for wedding photography drop me a line.

Beautiful day out with kids lots to do and see 2 cafes and 2 ice-cream vans all take card payment well worth a visit 😊

Very nice if youve never visited before. Great views of Wakefield Town centre, Emley more mast and much more. The only problem is all the litter. Theres always trash scattered about and it makes the place feel neglected and dirty.

Walker friendly, dog friendly, in fact amazingly friendly, coupled with perfect coffee, hot chocolate and an amazing breakfast menu

Worth a visit after reading a little about its history. Admission is free. There is a lovely cafe, with meals, cakes drinks and toilets. For those who like a walk why not take a stroll to Pugneys Country Park, 250 acres, with a lovely lake and more facilities.

I very much enjoyed the visit. The view is stunning and though there is little of the Castle remaining, I found it atmospheric. The site is well kept and litter-free with brief descriptions of how the Castle once was and the history. Its popular with dog-walkers.

Really great place to come and visit, the view from the top viewing point is amazing and looks out over most of Wakefield and beyond.Nice wide and easy to walk path, good for walking dogs and plenty of space around the castle itself.Parking can be awkward when it gets busy but the car park is a generous size

Really nice castle to visit with a great view of Wakefield. Easy access with sturdy stairs and well taken care of. A few careless visitors leave trash around and should be ashamed for doing so. Plenty of nice benches to enjoy the views.Great cafe with friendly staff if you want to stop for coffee or icecream.

Such a calming peaceful place. Plenty of ruins to explore and see. The view from the top is worth the climb. Not ideal place for toddlers as such, as youd seriously need eyes in the back of your head.

Sandal Castle is a fantastic ancient monument with a fascinating story. Though in ruins, the site remains interesting to look at and will interest people from young to old.There are a few signs offering information about the site including where many of the rooms were and how the castle was destroyed.Paths are well maintained and there is a small accessible car park. Most of the castle is wheelchair accessible too. There are also around 10 benches to sit on at various points.

Relaxing. The views are stunning.Hard to believe we have a castle on our doorstep.

What a great place for a quick visit and do a bit of exploring and learn some history, there is also great views of the area from the top of the hill. There is a cafe but it was closed when we arrive as it was later on in the afternoon. Even better parking and entry was free.

Absolutely great place,really nice walk and the castle ruins are awesome,smashing play place for the kids,nice food at the castle cafe and lovely ice cream,free parking upto 2 hours it cost us £2.50 for 4 hours,absolute bargain since its free entry,mini train and plenty of wildlife,even skimmed some stones like I was 16 again haha,great day great place.

Well set out ruined castle. It has decent walkways around it and to the area that would form the keep. You can easily imagine the views this would have given the defenders of the castle. Small cafe and visitors centre, closed early due to covid.

We love it here! Nice walk around, good views, plenty of bins and seats, accessible for disabled apart from the stairs to the top but still plenty to see for anyone in a wheelchair. Small car park but parking on streets nearby

Lovely place for a walk round.Called here on our way home from Leeds.The castle overlooks Putney country park and lake. Excellent for kids, loads of room to run around and there are activities dotted all round the lake, like climbing frames etc.Getting to the castle ruins is a gentle walk up hill, not suitable for the disabled in wheelchairs or scooters. Round the lake is fine though.

Great piece of history in Yorkshire, it’s a lovely walk with the kids, plus the cafe next to it is excellent for a cup of tea or an ice cream 🍦, plus they have a water bowl for dog walkers that love this location.Unfortunately the bridge to get to the very top seems to be closed, not sure why but if you’re feeling brave you can climb up from the other side.

Great place to go for a walk to forget all your stresses. There’s free parking available for about 10-15 cars. Gate closes in the evening so be aware of the time. The path is circular surrounding the moat. The views outwards are spectacular and peaceful to the mind. If you want more adventure, climb towards the center but be careful. Go on a pleasant day because of the grounds are wet, it won’t be a pleasant experience. Dogs love this place too, plenty of places to search and run.
