Archaeological site featuring the remnants of pyramids dating back to 900 BCE.
Very good museum an addition to the experience of the ruins had a good time.
Fun, affordable, and historical!
Joya de Cerén is a pre-Columbian site in El Salvador located in the vicinity of San Juan Opico and Las Flores , in the department of La Libertad , in the central-western region of El Salvador . It was inhabited at least since the year 400 by a tributary agricultural town of San Andrés and was abandoned around the year 600 due to the eruption of Laguna Caldera. The site allows you to appreciate the daily life of a Mayan farming town from 1400 years ago ( 7th century ), the only one known in El Salvador .
I really liked the place is wonderful full of history of the mayas and the people who did the work to uncover all that was hidden
Great place to know about the mayas
90% was closed down and nothing to see Its almost all deteriorated. Save your money.
Very beautiful experience to look back at the Mayan civilization
A place worth checking out if you are into history. We checked it out without a tour guide. Turned into a quick trip just walking around ourselves. One part of the site is off limits due not being accessible. But still had a good time walking around and admiring the site of my ancestors.
Unfortunately the museum has been closed for years, you can still see the pirámide but don’t expect any information on this important site.
Pretty cool. Just wish the rest of the museum was open to the public. Guess the pandemic really changed things around here.
Small but set of ruins but worth checking out. The property is well maintained.
Nice place to know more about the mayas do their construction
Due to the pandemic the museums are closed, but there plenty to see and learn, also the beautiful forest around the pyramids site is impressive.
Things are changing in El Salvador.I remember visiting the place many years ago and having the freedom to walk freely respecting the signs.Do to Covid19 your tour will be restricted every 45 minutes and you will be a control group with a good explanation of the site excavation and history. You cant visit the museum part that has a great exposition of artifacts and pictures of the discovery steps up today.I do recommend some bug spray during the raining season and be aware that driving directions from Google maps might take you for a funny loop. If you see the signs for the site slow down... the entrance can be a challenge especially because it comes unexpected. Luckily you can turnaround almost everywhere on the road... just be aware of your surroundings.
So I gotta say, I was very excited to visit the ruins but I was a bit disappointed after seeing them. Now the staff were nice, the shops were lush, the food offered was great, and of course seeing a fellow NYer miles away from home is always welcoming but it just wasnt what I was expecting.Hard to put in words cause theyre ruins but basically I wasnt fulfilled going there and because of COVID, areas are restricted, cant go in the museum and you cant climb the ruins anymore (regardless of COVID).I mean it was ok to see and be where history was but I wouldnt lose sleep if I missed out on this place.Im giving it 4 stars because of the souvenir area, the staff and the fact that it is history and we cant control how it ages... But Im ok with never going back here honestly.
Wonderful experience!! The sight is pretty big and guide knew what he was talking about. It was an amazing place to visit!!
Beautiful place filled with history and very nice tour guide
Really interesting history. Tour was thorough and our guide was really knowledgeable. Really hope they can unearth the rest of the buried structures soon as progress has been really slow since my last visit a few years ago
Museum closed, tunnel closed, you can go nowhere only with a guide. Waste of time :(
Fast paced tour because of the pandemic but I enjoyed it
This place is a must, enough parking space and a great service, locals pay $1 per person and no charge for parking. Currently there is a rule which will have you stay for only 45 minutes and a guide taking you all over and the lady that guided us was amazing, she showed us the place and explained everything to detail, the last stop is to the stores where you can get drinks and or snacks
The museum here has English translations. Very nice.
This is history at its best.. Mayan culture, beautiful will kept site, not yet fully restored, but you got back 1500 hundred years back in time!
I love this place, you must see it when you visit El Salvador
Great place to visit
Amazing to see and experience. Place is 1400 years old.
Lovely site where it is possible to walk among the ruins. Beautifully lush park as well.
Omg things are still being discover had a great time with my fam cant wait to come bak!
Really good place to learn about the culture of the ancestors who were living in El Salvador long time ago.,easy to access as well.
Loved this place, its really cool seeing what they made, now its nothing more than history, but like I said its coolYou👏Should👏Come👏 😆
Nice, but very small. You cant see the near big Maya ruin
Great place! Loved seeing the pyramids. Wish they had more funding.
It’s a small place, but still some historic significance, I saw a turquoise browed motmot, National bird of El Salvador which I thought was cool
Museum is great but they dont seen to take care of the ruins, It doesnt look well kept. You can tell they do Very little maintenance to the park.
Beautiful pyramids and fields, the weather is warm but if you sit under a tree you can feel the breeze and cool off.
Interesting place but there is a lack of identification explication sign need to enhance the experience.
Beautiful location. Medium size architecture
A great place to visit if you like monuments
Must visit place in El Salvador. Is a pre-Columbian site in ES from 900BC, was the capital of maya polity with supremacy over the other establishment of Valle deZapotitlan. It’s the political ceremonial center, this center has been open from 1996, it has clean bathrooms, big parking, many cacao and mango trees, a museum.Just a little annoyed for the mosquitoes outside.Btw the entrance is in carretera panamericana, google maps shows to go inside in one small street, but the entrance is after hilasalAlso everything is in Spanish and English 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Nice little place to explore a little bit more about El Salvadors Mayan past. The site is tiny. The entrance fee for foreigners is 3 USD.
It’s honestly a very nice place to go with your fam or just by yourself. Perfect if you wanna know more of the history of those cultures and take some pics with old pyramids located in that area.
Small archeological site of small pyramids covered by volcanic ash easy to get thru in 2 hours most exhibits include descriptions in English.
One of the most important Mayan Centers in the Mesopotamian Area. The beauty of this place is surreal and magical! #ElSalvador #Pipil #CulturaMaya
Very fascinating place. Self paced tour both indoors and outdoors
Wonderful experiencia, close to major cities, well preserved
Obviously there is lots of history here, but if you keep your wits about you it is possible to see many other things including El Salvadors national bird flying around.
Its a beautiful place ,but there wasnt much information about the place, we spend lots of time waiting for a Guide but the guy didnt Show up! Its still a good place to visit, bring bug spray , a lot of mosquitos there.
Such a cool location. Very old. Loved it.
If one is nearby - and interested in archeology - then, as the saying goes, "why not?" Its certainly not Tikal...or Chichén Itza...or any other marginally significant site in and around Central America. But for 15-20 minutes...why not? (This said, note that foreigners should be prepared to pay 300% of the local price to get in -- worth it? Maybe...as long as one appreciates archeology...really appreciates archeology!)
Very nice for people trying to get into culture. Very close to Joya de Ceren as well so it is easy to hit both sites in one day.
