Joya de Cerén is a pre-Columbian site in El Salvador located in the vicinity of San Juan Opico and Las Flores , in the department of La Libertad , in the central-western region of El Salvador . It was inhabited at least since the year 400 by a tributary agricultural town of San Andrés and was abandoned around the year 600 due to the eruption of Laguna Caldera. The site allows you to appreciate the daily life of a Mayan farming town from 1400 years ago ( 7th century ), the only one known in El Salvador .

A place worth checking out if you are into history. We checked it out without a tour guide. Turned into a quick trip just walking around ourselves. One part of the site is off limits due not being accessible. But still had a good time walking around and admiring the site of my ancestors.

Unfortunately the museum has been closed for years, you can still see the pirámide but don’t expect any information on this important site.

Pretty cool. Just wish the rest of the museum was open to the public. Guess the pandemic really changed things around here.

Things are changing in El Salvador.I remember visiting the place many years ago and having the freedom to walk freely respecting the signs.Do to Covid19 your tour will be restricted every 45 minutes and you will be a control group with a good explanation of the site excavation and history. You cant visit the museum part that has a great exposition of artifacts and pictures of the discovery steps up today.I do recommend some bug spray during the raining season and be aware that driving directions from Google maps might take you for a funny loop. If you see the signs for the site slow down... the entrance can be a challenge especially because it comes unexpected. Luckily you can turnaround almost everywhere on the road... just be aware of your surroundings.

So I gotta say, I was very excited to visit the ruins but I was a bit disappointed after seeing them. Now the staff were nice, the shops were lush, the food offered was great, and of course seeing a fellow NYer miles away from home is always welcoming but it just wasnt what I was expecting.Hard to put in words cause theyre ruins but basically I wasnt fulfilled going there and because of COVID, areas are restricted, cant go in the museum and you cant climb the ruins anymore (regardless of COVID).I mean it was ok to see and be where history was but I wouldnt lose sleep if I missed out on this place.Im giving it 4 stars because of the souvenir area, the staff and the fact that it is history and we cant control how it ages... But Im ok with never going back here honestly.

Really interesting history. Tour was thorough and our guide was really knowledgeable. Really hope they can unearth the rest of the buried structures soon as progress has been really slow since my last visit a few years ago

This place is a must, enough parking space and a great service, locals pay $1 per person and no charge for parking. Currently there is a rule which will have you stay for only 45 minutes and a guide taking you all over and the lady that guided us was amazing, she showed us the place and explained everything to detail, the last stop is to the stores where you can get drinks and or snacks

Must visit place in El Salvador. Is a pre-Columbian site in ES from 900BC, was the capital of maya polity with supremacy over the other establishment of Valle deZapotitlan. It’s the political ceremonial center, this center has been open from 1996, it has clean bathrooms, big parking, many cacao and mango trees, a museum.Just a little annoyed for the mosquitoes outside.Btw the entrance is in carretera panamericana, google maps shows to go inside in one small street, but the entrance is after hilasalAlso everything is in Spanish and English 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

If one is nearby - and interested in archeology - then, as the saying goes, "why not?" Its certainly not Tikal...or Chichén Itza...or any other marginally significant site in and around Central America. But for 15-20 minutes...why not? (This said, note that foreigners should be prepared to pay 300% of the local price to get in -- worth it? Maybe...as long as one appreciates archeology...really appreciates archeology!)
