The Landscapes are breathtaking. Most of the Lodges and Camps are at the banks of the Ewaso Ngiro River. You will be sure to spot most of the animals along the river banks.Birdwatching is a must with different species of birds found here.Overall recommended for all types of travelers.
Exciting evening game drive
I enjoyed my visit here since this place has unique animals that are not found in other parks. Here I saw the gravys zebra, reticulated giraffe, generuke, lesser kudu, oryx among other animals and birds. The scenic landscape adds beauty to the trails as you watch the sun setting on the beautiful hills.
The place is very good...roads are dusty but I assure you that your time there will be of good use.
Nice place
Samburu National Reserve is very peaceful and attracts animals because of the river that runs through it and the mixture of forest, thorn trees and grass vegetation. The natural serenity that is evident here is due to its distance from industry and the inaccessibility of the reserve for many years. This place is very far from Nairobi and it had taken almost 8 hours by road. Make sure you travel during the day so that you get a glimpse of Delmonte Farms. Unlike, Nairobi and surrounding places, the day time temperatures were higher in this region. Make sure you spend good amount of time with locals and enjoy Camel rides, a good long walk thru the reserve and so on.
Had an awesome tour of the whole reserve and was lucky enough to see the king of the jungle, Mr Lion and crocodiles among other wild animals.
Welcome to Samburu National Reserve, one of the most enjoyable tour destination boasting of different flora and fauna across East Africa.LOCATIONSamburu National Reserve is situated at the southeastern corner of Samburu County, Kenya. It is bordered to the south by Ewaso Nyiro River, which separates it from the Buffalo Springs National Reserve. The reserve covers an area of 165 Km² and is located around 345Km from Nairobi.Climatic ConditionsThe Reserve lies within ecological zone V- which is classified as arid and semi- arid with moisture index of 42 to 57, which indicate that evapo-transpiration is greater than available moisture. The days are extremely hot while the nights are cool. The annual mean temperatures range between 18ºC and 30ºC, while the mean annual rainfall is 354mm with peaks in November and April. The dry season starts in late May, and goes up to early October during when large concentration of wildlife is found in the reserve due to availability of lush vegetation along the Ewaso Nyiro River, the main source of water to the Reserve and the nearby communities.Available games (and chances of seeing )The reserve is reach in wildlife with fame for abundance in rare northern specialist species such as the Grevy Zebra, Somali Ostrich, Reticulated Giraffe, Gerenuk and the Beisa Oryx (Also referred as Samburu Special). The reserve is also popular with a minimum of 900 elephants. Large predators such as the Lion, Leopard and Cheetah are an important attraction (Kamunyak the Miracle Lioness that adapted the baby Oryx is a resident in the reserve). Wild dog sightings are also a common attraction to this unique protected area.Birdlife is abundant with over 450 species recorded. Birds of the arid northern bush country are augmented by a number of riverine forest species. Lesser Kestrel and the Taita Falcon are species of global conservation concern and they both utilize the reserve. Five species categorized as vulnerable have recorded in the reserve. These are African Darter, Great Egret, White-headed Vulture, Martial Eagle and the Yellow-billed Ox-pecker. Critically endangered species under CITIES – Pancake tortoise (malacochersus tornieriis found in the reserve.
The roads inside are definitely not perfect, try avoiding to go during rainy season as this will majorly affect your chances of spotting the big 5, the muddy roads may bring your trip to a halt and definitely not recommending a visit with a saloon, the roads are bumpy and brace yourself for neck pain and back pain.As the bridge has collapsed its not possible to go to buffalo springs from samburu national park and vice versa, instead you will have to exit samburu from the Archers Gate and head back towards main road and enter buffalo springs after approximately 20km ride and vice versa.Definitely not recommending a day trip as it might get very difficult to spot the cats, during our visit we didnt spot a single big Cat and all we spotted was giraffes and elephants.Having a guide would be better as he would know certain locations where you are most likely to find the Lions , Cheetah and Leopard.A one time visit is good but definitely do not expect activities such as hunting.
Beautiful nature with Elephants roaming around freely! A must visit to get this experience!
Home to the samburu special five wild animals. Do you know the Samburu special five? If you dont, well here are the names; generuk, reticulated giraffe, beisa oryx, somali ostrich and gravy zebra. A wide range of fauna and flora can satisfy your adventure to the fullest, the flomboyant Samburu culture is another attraction you cant ignore in your travel itinerary to the Samburu National Reserve. Wide range of accommodation facilities provide you with a variety places to choose as your stay over in Samburu National Reserve; from lodges, luxury tented camps and campsites all depends on the depth of your pocket.
What a wonderful place. An opportunity to see an alternative to the norm in terms of how a tribe / people has existed from (what seems likethe beginning of time - certainly since the beginning of human civilisation. The tribes people are / were just as curious about us as we about them so interaction was very good. Most were able to speak some English and some were very well educated so we were really treated to a lesson in how the other half live. It was a real eye opening experience and definitely recommended 👍🏿 👍🏿 👍🏿 👍🏿
Want to experience beauty of nature dont look anywhere else
One of the greatest parks in Kenya. Dusty and dry. Great landscapes. Lush vegetation. High concentration of fauna (grevy zebras, reticulated giraffes, elephants, birds, hippos, crocodiles, leopards, lions...). I recommend neighboring parks (which are included in Samburu park fees: Buffalo Springs with much more flat savanna and Shaba with gorgeous landscapes. Ive camped on public campsites and in private tented camps which were great but at very different price points! Dont forget your bathing suit. My top 3 in Kenya.
Great National Reserve in Northern Kenya, everyone should visit, many wild animals and fascinating landscapes, great culture and people
One of the most impressive parcs of Kenya. Different landscape, different animals... worth the trip!
Gazette in 1974, This park is situated in Samburu County and boasts of having diverse wildlife and bird species..its fun having a game drive over here and I enjoyed the sun downer and bush breakfast along river ewaso nyiro. Its home to elephants and also where kamunyak, the Miracle lioness adopted the onyx. Other activities that one can do are cultural tours, learning about the samburu culture.
Samburu was dry but super awesome. Save for the Rhino the other members of big 5 are present. Stay inside the Samburu National park when visiting. Shaba is quite far from the animals
This place is fantastic, great hotels, Larsens tented camp, samburu game lodge, , wow, nice people, live around here.
Lots of animals to see. Grevys zebras, reticulated giraffes, elephants, gerenuks, lions, cheetah, leopard, bat-eared foxes, oryx and ostriches to name some. Zebras and giraffes especially have beautiful and unique patterns unlike the ones in other parks. These are unique to Samburu, as well as the gerenuks. The landscape is breathtaking and the vegetation is ragged and keeps changing depending on whether you are at the foothills, the marshes, the river bank or on higher ground. Makes you feel like you are visiting many different places simultaneously!
Nice and lovely place. Natural Reserve in the heart of Kenia. It is all what you can imagine and expect about Africa. Many different species and awesome views.
Its an incredible beautiful place to visit
Samburu is an awesome place to visit..The camping experience was just great....There are rare species of zebras and giraffes....The park is near the road. The maasai village has amazing people full of information.
Amazing place for game drives.
So many elephants and giraffe! We saw a group of giraffes abort a river crossing due to lions on the far shore. And sooo many elephants! Plus many others. We were there three nights and had a fantastic experience!
The special animals you get to see only hear
This place is amazing, how the drivers find all the Animals in the park I dont know.
Intrepids is a very memorable location for your visit to Samburu. Sleep in an elegant tent that is well ventilated and overlooks the river.A few things to know before going: it is located about 45 minutes within the camp (from Archers Post). Keep in mind that the entire camp is run on a generator which is kept off at certain points throughout the day and night to conserve energy. The hotel rate also does not include a $70/per person entrance fee to the park. Note that you’ll need to pay this fee every day if you leave the park and come back in.
Such a nice place with great save the elephant initiative.
The best place in samburu reserve to relax and enjoy with friends n family
Beautiful happy villagers happy to share their lifestyle with tourists. Take some cash with you and be prepared to look at their handcrafts so they can make some money instead of just the tourist companies.
A fantastic park and view of the local river gives the impression of the great migration of the wild beast of masaai Mara, all in all hot air balloon safari and night walk safari with the local tour guide. What a way to boost up your adrenaline
Enjoyed Samburu and Buffalo Springs in late May. Very green after the rains and not too hot.
Located deep in the Samburu National Reserve, the Intrepids is a rustic Camp nestled on the river banks. Great food and ambience and tranquility. The camp is raised with good views of the river. The tents are spacious and comfortable beds.
Lion safari is the best here in this reserves. Many lions are available in this park with absolutely wild looks and with deadly features all around. Open space nice surroundings widespread high grass and bushes. The visitors love this spot, the vehicle are Escorted by the wildlife personnel. Many a times the lions come near the vehicle and attempt to attack these men then do the useful tricks to send them away.
Samburu intrepids safari camp is nested at Ewaso ngiro River where you have a chance to see animals coming to Quench thirsty during day time. Manager is so friendly and more so staff are also so friendly as well
One of the best tented camps I have been to. My biggest moments were the treats by the chef and the customer service, honestly top notch tempted camp 5star, I think it should be 7star
Samburu has a few species that are hard to come by anywhere else. This is the only place I saw a gerenuk. This is just as well maintained as any other animal reserve, so it would be a good stop on a safari trip.
ill rank it number 2 in kenya, was here four years ago, plenty of wildlife here saw lots of elephants, dry terein any one visiting i reccomend a 4wd true wilderness be guranteed to spot a leopard its all about timming home to the special five
My favorite National Reserve in Kenya. Love spotting the Samburu Five and sighting the Leopard is a near guarantee.
Unbelievable beautiful. Amazing wildlife, see the big five in action. A must visit unique location
I visited this reserve two days ago stayed for 3 days and loved every moment of it. The weather was great at 29degrees Celsius. It kept raining sporadically so the vegetation was quite lush. Sighted very many Elephants, Gazelles, Guruneks, Impalas, wide variety of birds, Baboons, two Lions, Warthogs. There are several camp sites which are well maintained. We visited Samburu Lodge for a swim. Great place. Planning to return.
I visited the park for the first time in October. At this time of year, it was incredibly hot, dry and dusty. The roads in this park are what let it down - they are badly corrugated which makes this a hardy 4x4 only. It takes over an hour to drive 19 km to get to Heritage Intrepids Camp but luckily, it is a beautiful drive with plenty of wildlife. The park is well sign posted, unlike other parks. All in all, its well worth the investment in time to visit this little hidden gem.
Other than Samburu being my ancestral land it is my home. Very beautiful land with crisp clean air. The Samburu National Reserve is special as it has the most number of elephants than any other reserve in the country. Additionally this is where a lion adopted a baby oryx and defended it from fellow predators. This is quite special because an oryx is basically food to a lion and the story is very touching. You will not be disappointed while on game drive as there are all sorts of wild animals and birds as well. The Ewaso Nyiro River flows through the reserve and all the animals and lodges depend on the river. I definately recommend this place for family vacays and honey moons as well. Cheers
Beautiful game reserve. Park fees are 1000 KES per person for 24 hrs for residents and 60 USD for non residents. The park has some animals you wont find in other parks "Big samburu five" Most probably you will see elephants, giraffes and if you are lucky lions and cheetahs.
My wife and I visited here in September last year and had the most amazing time. This is not a large reserve but for those who hope to see a lot of variety without the longer safari drives then this is the place to go. We were there for only 2 full days but were fortunate to see elephant, giraffe, wild dogs, leopard, water buffalo, lions of all ages, zebra, gazelle, geranuk, baboons, monkeys, lizards, hyena, eland, vultures etc etc.. . The local Samburu village even offered to put me up for the night !
We had a brilliant safari in the Samburu. We saw all the big five. The first day we saw a leopard. Our whole holiday was marvellous. We also paid a visit to the Samburu people who danced for us & proudly showed us around their village. The views were stunning of the landscape. We saw so many different types of animals. An unforgettable experience.
post card africa, orange and golden landscapes, acacia trees and a high concentration of wild life. In 2 days I saw lion, leopard, cheetah, Elephants, giraffes, gazelle, grevys zebra, you name it!! Stunning place.
We stayed at the Intrepids Lodge and had an excellent experience. The Tents we stayed in were first class with an en-suite facility that all our needs. The food and service was great. I highly suggest that April is a great time to visit the reserve. We were up close and personal with all the wildlife that the reserve has to offer. It was a wonderful start to our two week Kenyan Safari.
