Salem Sue - Tourist attraction in Williston, United States
We always wondered if it were possible to visit Sue and it certainly was. Easy access and if you choose you can leave donations for this great cows maintenance lovely views from the bluff and 2 minutes off the interstate....
Fun, quick stop right off the highway
Just a free drive up to Salem Sue. Donations are appreciated, and she offers a good view of prairie and farm land. (Tons of wind, though)
Its a short ride up a gravel road to the base of this roadside attraction. At 38 tall and 50 long, Salem Sue is considered to be the largest Holstein Cow and weighs approx. 12,000 lbs. While admissions are free, donations are graciously accepted at the bottom in a designated collection bin, which are used exclusively for the maintenance and upkeep of the statue.
Fun little side trip. Great views.
Good place to stretch your legs at if you need somewhere to stop for a bit. There are picnic tables to eat at. This cow is also up a pretty steep and bumpy dirt road so make sure you have a car that can handle it.
We have been driving by here years we decided to stop this year. It very neat I like these kind of things. Great views from there also
How can you not like a statue of a huge Holstein cow perched on top of a small Butte overlooking the beautiful high plains of ND?
This place is udderly terrific. It has great views of the surrounding area.
Great view of the surrounding area from up on the hill. Free to visit however, there is an opportunity to donate at the unmanned enterence.
Driving west you can see Sue from far away - it’s quite the sight to behold. Driving to the gravel road to Sue herself was simple (plus two great gas stations right before). Sue is enormous and has clearly gotten a recent paint job because she was beautiful. The visit only added a brief stop on the trip and was worth it.
Fun spot to stop between Bismarck and Dickinson. Kids will like it.
Cool huge cow on top of a hill. There isn’t much more you can say about her! The view from up near her is great! There is a cool walking path way up on the hill that will take you even a bit higher!
It was neat enough to spend 10-15 minutes and check it out. I wouldn’t go out of my way to see it, but if you’re in the area, why not? It’s just a short drive off the main road.
Fun, quick stop in New Salem
Surprising landmark when arriving in New Salem.Very beautiful big cow !
We had a lot of fun at this roadside attraction.
Cute statue. Lovely views from the grounds of the surrounding area.
Worth the few extra minutes off the main road to drive up to this massive statue that is very visible from the highway.
Theres no reason not to visit this quirky, free tourist attraction. With some small rock formations on top of the hill, you can get a good view of the surrounding area and if you have kids they can have fun playing around.
Cool tourist attraction. A little hill to climb up and look at the view around. Got some nice family pictures and laughs.
This falls into the category of weird roadside attractions! Its right off the highway, so not much of a detour. You can walk right up to Salem Sue. Take some pictures, have a laugh, and get back on your way!
This is a fun place to get out of the vehicle and stretch the legs a bit! Salum Sue is awesome and the view from the top is panoramic. Definitely a highlight of traveling through this section of ND!
The giant Holstein is fun but the real treat here are the views from the short hike up the butte.
Such a quirky sculpture, and a good reason to get out and stretch the legs. Second visit. Enjoyed it as much the second time as the first.
We saw it from the expressway. The huge letters spelling out New Salem was reminiscent of the Hollywood sign until you see the huge cow. Lol. We just had to stop. Perfect excuse, we needed gas. Even more perfect we had the time to spare. It was well worth it. Once you make your way to Sue you can add a bonus of climbing a little further up for a gorgeous view of the area. It only really added less than an hour. Just do it. My pictures dont do the view justice
Great stop, my favorite animal is a cow and Salem Sue was a delight to see!
Located South of Interstate 94 just before the fairgrounds youll see the drive up to her. Its a bumpy drive up with a small parking area to a path up close. Not accessible for handicap but still a close enough view.
This was a fun stop, we parked and walked up the hill to see Salem Sue World’s Largest Holstein Cow. This is the mascot for the area to honor the dairyman that live here. There is no fee to see her, but she is not lighted at night. When you get to the top of the hill you can see a beautiful vista in all directions.
If youre in the area, why not stop? The views are spectacular and its such a unique attraction which is supported by the local community. They simply ask for a donation to help preserve the attraction. Be sure to pick up a T-Shirt at the gas station next door to remember your stop to see the worlds largest Holstein cow!
We couls see Salem Sue from I-94. Definitely worth the stop. I was disappointed not having seen any holstein cows in the State while we drove all day in N.D. Would havw been nice to have dairy shops nearby.
Sue herself is really well done. Its a quick and easy stop for nice views. Winding gravel road to the top be ready for that.
Its worth the hike up to the top! The hill it sits on is also fun to climb on.
Quite a unique attraction giving tribute to the local dairy industry. Great view of the area at the top.
Great little place for a quick stretch. No restrooms but theres a few spots available for parking. Great views, gas stations available. Saw a truck with a trailer get stuck up there because theres not enough space to turn around up there
This is such a ridiculous and quirky place, and I loved every second of it. If you are driving by, this is a must-stop. Interstate drives can be boring, though places like this liven the trip.
Ol Salem Sue! Look what you made me do!Quite a sight for a tourist. Enjoyed the community pitching in to build this. The view from the top is great to see the city and country side, however not the best to take a photo of the cow with scenery in the background. Make sure to grab a picture with New Salem written on the hill.
Impressive! Visible from quite a distance away. When we were there there were fields of sunflowers for Salem Sues view!! We loved the photo op stop!!
Very large cow. A good place to stop for a break. There are some picnic tables. Also, plenty of portable toilets. Lovely views all around. Great high place to take pictures from. There were some orange fencing that I did not care for. Apparently Salem Sue needs a new paint job.
If youre traveling as a tourist on 94, theres no excuse not to take fifteen minutes of your time and drive up to see Salem Sue. A quick walk up the path gets you a fun photo op with the worlds largest Holstein statue and a great view of the surrounding land. If you have a few minutes extra, walk all the way to the top of the hill and get a stunning 360 degree panorama of the area surrounding New Salem.Free to everyone, but drop a buck or two in the donation box for Sues upkeep.
Salem Sue is a great attraction to visit. Truly unique in all aspects. Beautiful view of the country side from this location.
What a wonderful place to visit. Ive seen this from the interstate many, many times and this time I finally went up the hill to see the "cow" up close. It was well worth the time! The view is amazing and it is a wonderful place to stop and enjoy the peace and quiet, and eat your lunch.Salem Sue is every inch as big as she looks. A great landmark, well kept, and not commercialized. A free will donation suffices to keep Sue in good shape.Take the time to visit Sue if you are in the neighborhood. I wish I had done so years ago. I wont pass her by next time.
I am just driving across North Dakota minding my own business, when I come across this giant cow statue on a nearby bluff . . .
Drove by her many times as a kid and we were never able to stop, so this time around we took the opportunity. It is slightly more impressive passing by on the highway, but it has great views and was a nice place to stretch our legs and snap a few pictures!
A neat roadside attraction of a giant milking cow. Great to see at sunrise. Definitely unique to North Dakota. If youre driving by its worth a stop and a looksie.
Exceptional! Gives a great representation of what true type for the Holstein breed was in the early 70s. Also, the views are awesome.
This is pretty amazing. I didnt think it was very big. When you get there its amazing. She is high. The view from on top the hill is amazing. It cost $40,000 to build. All the dairy farms put in the money to build her.
Great stop on our long journey, our 5 year old loved it. Hiked to the top of the "mountain" for a nice view and the dog loved that too! There are picnic tables which arenice, but no shade.
This is a very mundane yet amazing attraction. Its one of those things you never go see on its own, but off of 94 its a perfect pit stop for a leg stretch, picture, and good story.
35ft high, 50ft long cow! Pretty freaking cool roadside attraction!!! Its less than 5min off I-94 and totally worth a quick stop!
