71 Broad St, Charleston, SC 29401, United States, Charleston
Church built in the 1760s with a massive steeple & a cedar pew where George Washington sat in 1791.
Historic old cathedral and grave yard dating to the revolution.
Lovely place for a stroll
Favorite church I visited so far, I guess primarily because I was able to go inside. My wife and I walked up as service just finished up. The clergy members were so welcoming and there was even a free tour we had time to briefly listen in on. The amount of history is astounding and the beauty of the church is top notch. Excellent stained glass. Highly enjoyed the cemetery and the honor of visiting John Rutledges grave.
Beautiful architecture. Nice for a quick stop in.
Beautiful church in historic downtown. Iconic landmark in the Charleston.
I cant speak to the health of congregation or the church leadership, but this is a fascinating building with intricate decoration. All the guides will tell you that George Washington himself sat in box 43, perhaps apocryphal, but still a good story.
Beautiful Christmas Eve service. Great preaching, friendly greeters, marvelous music, precious Jesus ... Who has brought is good news, joy, peace, love ... because of His Grace to all people. Well proclaimed here and demonstrated by this fellowship
May be the most beautiful historic church Ive seen. Graveyard occasionally open to the public.
A very beautiful church worth visiting no admission charge and historically interesting
Very pretty church with wonderful architecture and history. I wasn’t able to be there for a service but I thoroughly enjoy yes walking through. It was a beautiful church, but I think there are even brighter and prettier ones in town.
It was the only Church that allow us in at that time...it was unbelievable stunningly beautiful...
Beautiful church worth walking through for the beauty and history which is very interesting. Beautiful stained glass and an organ which is quite impressive. Go early during the week as the walking tour groups can make it hard to walk through.
Unfortunately it was Wednesday when we visited, the only day you cant tour inside because of mass but the cemetery is so peaceful and the church itself is breathtaking. Also near famous Tradd street.
Saint Michaels Church is a rarity in that it is both an historic church as well as a place of ongoing Gospel ministry. So many historic churches tend to become museums, weighed down by the centuries and relying on their own past for present significance. St Michaels church building is a museum worthy of a weekday visit, and St Michaels Church is a place seeking to nourish the soul and point people to Jesus Christ.
Beautiful, historical resting place of Charles Cotesworth Pinckney and John Rutledge, two signers of the U. S. Constitution, and many others. The grounds are well maintained and the ancient stones are lined with blooming plants in contrast of newness of life. Sense the heritage, feel the tranquility and never lose touch but embrace the passing of time. The church itself was not open for viewing.
Lovely church and cemetery altho not open today to go inside.
St. Michaels Episcopal Church is a historic church and the oldest religious structure in Charleston, South Carolina. It is a beautiful house of worship inside and outside and had a massive steeple. There is an old cemetery located at the church and I always find them interesting. It is located at Broad and Meeting streets and was built in the 1750’s.
Beautiful historic church. Past visits from George Washington and Robert E Lee which is pretty interesting to think about as you enter.
Amazing church! The people are super great there!
The most beautiful church with an amazing service! We got there an hour early to just look around. We got a small tour and then sat in the pew for the service. Beautiful 🎶 music!
The Church outside is beautiful. However, the website showed that the Church and cemetery was opened, however both was closed, one of the reasons we went there, since I have family buried in the cemetery. We did find an office and the lady there was rude, implied that we should have called before going there. I figured, if you check the website and it states "open" why would I call. This was on the day we went. Hopefully other people will not encounter this person and the Church and cemetery will be open.
Beautiful church. I always live to see this and st Phillips still dominate the skyline. The "Holy City" gets this name for this and other steeple being the tallest structures
Absolutely Beautiful church with well maintained churchyard
Beautiful, historic church. Welcoming congregation. Serving the local community and Missions in US and overseas.
I felt the spirit inside this church as rays of sun shine pireced through the tiffinay stain glass of Saint Michael , in awe a new we were blessed ! Holy , spiritual, inspiration of hope &love!
This is Saint Michaels Cathedral. It is Anglican Catholic. It is one of the oldest Churches in Charleston with one of the oldest congregations. George Washington worshiped here. As a baptized Catholic I attended St Micheal’s. I have sat in the presidential booth and prayed in the same church as our founding father and accepted communion. It differs from the Roman Catholic in the history of the Kings and queens. If you wander through the court yard you will find St Micheal’s the arch angels grace site marker.i prayed here during a hurricane. I prayed here on Labor Day. I also gave a Good Samaritan box for a child. And I made a painting for mr Sullivan one of the church members.
This church is the most welcoming one I have ever been to. The Sunday evening service is always so joyful!
This is the oldest church building in the Holy City, built on the site of the original St. Philips. George Washington worshiped here. The church is beautiful inside and out and the graveyard is a treasure trove of history itself.
Beautiful historic church to see while on your walking tour of Charleston. George Washington visited here.
Whether youre ambling down Broad Street at Sunrise or Sunset or the heat of the day the St Michaels Church spire dominates the skyline and offers beauty and imagination to any visit to Charleston. Truly a visit is not complete without seeing it in different skies of color.
Thee most beautiful and historic church I have ever visited in the United States...
Wow! I was expecting a boring, rigid church service. But received a spirit filled experience and a timeoy message. The pastor was very warm and compassionate, and prayed for us after the service. The cemetary is beautiful.
Awesome history here. Two signers of the constitution buried in the small graveyard beside the church. Worth a visit!
Love the cemetery!
Beautiful, classic church in Charleston SC. Very historic building. Multiple presidents have worshipped here. Went as part of Downtown Charleston walking tour. Definitely worth going with a guide to get the history. But, just beautiful on own.
Extremely interesting and educational experience. It was beautiful, in a morbid kind of way. The messages on the tombstones from their loved ones were very heartfelt and moving.
Beautiful church. It is open during the day for you to view the stained glass and sanctuary.
Beautiful old headstones.
Anglican service, beautiful church and historic, friendly. Afterwards, we had a guided tour, very interesting!!!!
It was beautiful! Would be 5 stars but the place is hardly ever open to the public! But it was worth the wait - so much beauty, art and history in there.
Beautiful stained glass windows are one of the highlights in this historic church.
The cemetery adjacent to this historical gem was open to walkers on a Saturday morning. We were delighted to stroll through the charming narrow paths between the tombstones. You can read about the souls that rest there, dating back to the 1800s. Numerous infants and small children are buried and honored in this historical plot of St. Michaels church. Sobering look at Charlestons history. Dont forget to say a prayer for them if you visit!
Out of all the churches I’ve visited over the years this one is my favorite! It’s absolutely beautiful!
Love that they are open to come take a peek inside. Beautiful old church with lots of history, there were brochures up by the altar/pulpit area to give yourself a guided tour. Wished I could have attended a service but it didnt fit my schedule.
The oldest Church in Charleston. Amazing beauty! Still a functioning church but also open during the week to see its inside beauty as well as some historical gravesites in its cemetery.
Great Congregation, historic church, beautiful in all its majesty. A quick look at this steeple from afar and you get a whiff of the deep southern culture of the holy city.
Certainly a beautiful church among many in Charleston besides having a fabulous bells. this has a gorgeous stained glass of Saint Michael at the front of the altar. The pews are the lovely wood interior. They have busy bags for kids during the service.
Beautiful church from the outside. Had walked 3 miles to get there mid afternoon to find out closed and locked up. Couldnt visit like I wanted too.
Excellent building and readily available information. Wish service schedule was more detailed, as I thought I had arrived in time for one but I couldnt find any trace of a minister.
For the first time, I took the tour.. Who knew thats why they had doors on the pews. The Tiffany stained glass is awe inspiring as well. I was raised Episcopalian. My how things have changed over the years. I encourage you, regardless of faith, to tour all of the local churches and their graveyards. I look at it from a history perspective to understand who built the city from all aspects.
