Restaurant & lounge serving international dishes from local ingredients in a splashy setting.
Great place to that you other half for food
Excellent Poke bowl with great flavor combinations. Patio seating and a nice calm lunch ambiance.
Came here for some brunch and the chef, Dononique Johnson sent out raw food and overcooked food. Her whole arrangement was awful. Dont come here.
Excellent wait staff... especially Linda. The food was delicious. House tea was delicious
Disappointed. We were so excited that they were back open went around 7pm on a Saturday. The hostess walked past us a few times ignoring us but we were patient. Finally she came to the hostess stand and told is they would not be able to serve us because they were far too busy and under staffed. Also she blamed the cook for not being able to keep up amd stated he was not doing a very good job. The dinning room was the only room being used and was not full. I understand that my be out of anyones control but it was just two of us and restaurant wasnt set to close until 9pm. We used to come to Surlas prior to Covid.. hoping things get better. Not a good experience.
This location is closed. They were closed even before the pandemic started, so not sure if they plan to reopen.Update: Surlas has reopened but their hours are limited to lunch. I had the salmon platter which was phenomenal. I would recommend if you have the opportunity to go.
This place is the one I like best. I go to plenty of restaurants but here I keep coming back again and again. The stuff is very helpful and the food they cook is so tasty. I would always prefer to have a nice meal in this place. I recommend this place with pleasure.
Great lunch spot. Yummy food and good quantity.
I ordered the Turkey Sandwich on toasted wheat bread. I was surprised that the turkey meat was turkey lunch meat. I really thought it would be real turkey meat. Our waitress was very attentive and the place is lovely.
Havent eaten there in a while. Decided to go in and have lunch. Smelled like cat urine by the front door. They have two cigarette ashtrays by the door that smelled nasty. Went inside the restaurant smelled fishy and dirty. the service was terrible waited for 15 minutes just to get helped . Overall bad experience dont think Ill be back.
The food the atmosphere and dining with my lovely cousin was the best everything was delicious over the top I tell everyone you get a chance go dont stop just go it is that good
Food is pretty consistent and quite tasty. Love the happy hour and Sunday brunch. I do wish the bar was stocked better, we were told "I cant make these 5 drinks if the menu, cause we dont have one or more of the ingredients" which was disappointing.
Brunch was great! Truly bottomless mimosas, bbq chicken and ribs are insane, eggs Benedict is delicious, bacon is bacon, scrambled eggs fluffy, yummy french toast, lots of salad, and they have both omelet and crepe stations with lots of options as well as a large ham. Waffles were a little underwhelming, couldve used some butter. And we got a lemon bar with no lemon, Im sure just an accidental batch. Oh and desserts were fabulous and my friend said the sushi and salmon was great. Ive been twice and overall I definitely feel like Im getting my moneys worth every time.
Had reservations, waited 15 minutes to be seated. Restaurant area looked great, loved the glass wall showing off the kitchen. Escorted to a banquet room/storeroom for chairs, no atmosphere, seated there. Asked to get a table in main restaurant and told it was possible in about an hour and a half. Smug. Treated poorly. Left without eating. Had a great meal at Canal Street.
The Lumpia appetizers are off the hook. Great staff, fantastic food, wonderful atmosphere. Great place for a romantic date, or just getting together with friends.
Live music is the best HiFi is amazing!
Great place for Sunday Brunch. They dont take reservations, though. Bummer, 2 parties, both traveling 1/2 way to meet in the middle and we had to wait over an hour for a party of 4. Reservations would have made is easier for us. Buffet was better tan most. Food was fresh. Sushi was just OK, nothing special. Everything was fresh.
Brought my family of 11 to brunch on Mothers Day. Upon making reservations, we were asked if we would like indoor or outdoor dining.I specified indoor since several members of our family suffered allergies. We were told that we would have to sit outside when we arrived since they were over booked even though our reservation was made two weeks in advance. Was promised all you can eat prime rib, crab legs, and shrimp. Never seen prime rib at all, in fact no ham either. Waited around for food to be replenished. The all you can eat shrimp didnt mention that you had to shell and de-vein your own at the table. Very unsanitary to have tiny shrimp legs and poop on your plate!!! Can NOT believe how unbelievably unsatisfactory our experience was. For the past 4 years, my company has had our Christmas party at Surlas, but will have to find another venue for future celebrations.
Great food, service and very clean! This was my 2nd time here for Brunch and I am very impressed!! The guys at omelette bar and hostess were super friendly!
Appetizers were excellent (try the egg roll;however, the entrees were not worth the price based on the Ribs/ MashedPotatoes and Salmon/Shrimp, 2hich I tried.
What a cool spot! Actually it wasn’t a business lunch but more of a celebration with co-workers. So many interesting and tasty choices. There were sandwiches, soups, salads, and full meals. I went very basic with a Caesar Salad. I added a grilled chicken breast to make it a bit more exciting. I think there was also an option for grilled salmon on the Caesar. The fish n chips looked awesome and very filling - large portions! The chicken sandwich also caught my eye. The star of the lunch for me was an appetizer - lumpia with a great sweet & sour dipping sauce. Don’t leave without trying it!It’s just a bit south of downtown Modesto so parking isn’t an issue. Plus, they have their own parking lot. I’d recommend it for groups, couples, or families.
Took my family to dinner for my wifes 50th birthday. Food and drinks are always great. John Surla always does a great job with his risotto. I have had the spinich, seafood, and beef risottos at different times, always wanting more.
Great beer choice for happy hour. Food a little limited but main menu looked good. Good spot for quiet drink
This place is good for a nice cocktail and appetizer during happy hour. The entrees are decent but a little overpriced. We went for a prix fix dinner for Valentines day last year. We got placed at a weird table that is kind of in the way. We asked to be moved but they would not do it even though there were plenty of tables open. We still go there every few months but still have the same opinion about the place.
Outstanding spot for Californian food. I love this place, great food & service. The service was very welcoming and observant. Makes me feel like I am back in Tucson.
A bit pricey if youre just wanting something to eat, but the food is good.Although this was a somewhat fancier restaurant we all had burgers and although I cant say it was worth the near $20 price tag.. Its definitely better than most Ive tried, and I have tried burgers from dozens of different places.Just dont be lame and get your burger cooked past medium/medium-rare. If you DO get your burger cooked well done then just get a mediocre burger from Red Robin or something because you dont have the pallet for flavor.
Great food, place has nice classy feel to it, and the staff were nice. What more could you want. I had a great time.. ^^
Great cuisine. Our table had everything from a burger and mac and cheese to a fabulous sushi roll and seafood risotto. Fantastic. We topped it off with a couple of cocktails and some relaxation on the patio listing to mcw band play it up.
Great spot for brunches! Big choice of every food you can think of! Love the atmosphere: live music, happy people, pleasant service. If you want a little celebration on your Sunday morning, it’s the right place!
I had an intimately thoughtful and inspiring experience. My brunch highlights were beautiful acoustic guitar covers, unlimited mimosas, and a gourmet breakfast buffet that absolutely nailed every dish. Spend some time here if you want to be treated like you deserve.
Buffet brunch on Sundays are busy. But the food is fantastic. Bottomless mimosas (but you have to pay for the pitcher of juice). On the regular menu, the urban spin to the lechon is a good version of the Filipino dish. I’ve gone awhile back when they used to have Prime Rib Tuesdays. That dinner was amazing and I was sad to hear it wasn’t an option anymore.
This place has amazing food and awesome service. Their menu options are always fresh and new. I never order the same thing twice because there are just so many great options to choose from. I love this restaurant.
Sunday Mothers Day Champagne Buffet Brunch. Wonderful selection of foods. Pleasant music by live guitarist. Stellar, friendly service. VERY pleased!!
Wonderful restaurant, even more memorable bar. The food was delicious; we ordered with guidance from the bartender, Wes. His cocktail menu offered up an excellent variety. He kept the conversation going with really interesting foodie trivia.
This is a great restaurant with family in mind. They have indoor and outdoor accommodations. One of the best Sunday brunches for the price. They like kids and they made them feel welcome. You may want to give your self a bit of time when you visit since they are busy most of the time. Final thoughts, best brunch, kid friendly and fare price.
Tried their Valentines day venue this year. Good food for the area. Nice atmosphere. They made it a nice evening for me and my wife. We will have to go back and check out their regular menu sometime.
Been going to Surlas regularly over the last 5 years and the food and service had always been top notch. He also has Lolas in Hilmar which is also a great restaurant. This is a good place to have business meetings, go out on a date or have a drink. Dont forget their Sunday brunch is also great.
I love the clam chowder! Last week I had the rib eye steak and was some what disappointed. I ordered med rare and it was over cooked. Service is good.
We had a large group and sat outside in the patio. The food was good. We tried several appetizers and they were excellent. My chicken dinner was only OK, but my husband loved his steam. Dewz, though, had an even better streak in his opinion. When the sun went down, there was outdoor heading and fire puts to keep us warm. Two nights later Surlas catered a dinner at the Vet Center and that was fantastic. Well be back.
I have never in my life written a review for a restaurant, but I found that I needed to go through the inconvenience of writing this review to tell others how horrible this place is. I went on Valentine’s Day with my girlfriend because it looked like a romantic place, they got the mood and the scenery correct and some of the food was good, but other than that everything else was bad. They started us off with tap water, which for a place that was charging $75 a person for a 5 course meal was very disappointing. Then they gave us bread to accompany the meal, the bread was awful, it wasn’t even toasted, it was just soft bread covered with olive oil and way too much salt. Also the whole menu was just a flash card with 3 options on the main course, and that all u had to choose from. The waitress was the worst part, she was rude and gave us really judging looks. She would also bring our courses really fast, like if she was rushing us to leave as soon as possible. Then the first course came, my girlfriend had some raviolis and they were really good. I had gotten a small piece of bread covered in beef and beet sauce. The bread tasted so bad, it tasted like what my dog smells like after I don’t wash him in a month. The second course was better, it was a potato soup with bacon bits on top. The thing is my girlfriend was trying to go for all of the vegetarian options and she did tell the waitress before hand. Then the waitress brought both of our soups with bacon and my girlfriend didn’t realize until after she had already had some. Luckily my girlfriend isn’t vegetarian but this mistake could have happened to someone who was. The third course was a drink, it was apple cider with berries at the bottom, u could see it had been sitting in there for a while because the berries were already disintegrating. At first she had offered us champagne instead of apple cider but she never asked us if we were over 21. But even that was awful, it was way too sweet and the flavor was gross. After this the main course was brought out, I had gotten the steak with mashed potatoes and my girlfriend had gotten the vegetarian lasagna. The steak I got was really good but the lasagna was bad, I tried some and it tasted like microwave lasagna. The dessert was the last course and I got some chocolate mousse thing, and it was good. My girlfriend got the crème brûlée and it was good but the caramelized sugar on top was way too thick and it tasted really burnt. The best part was the water boy, since he kept calling me “sir”. Other than that this place was awful, it’s overpriced and and most of the food was bad.
Far swankier than expected in Modesto. Looks the part, and the staff was very friendly... but very slow to help, and my food was appalling. Im a very easygoing guy when it comes to food service, but my lunch was inedible. I ordered the salmon salad, which is elegantly plated on a narrow, white plate (which will factor in here in a momentas a seared salmon fillet alongside a salad with some soft cheese crumbles and currants/raisins/small berries that were pretty tasty. Unfortunately, the salmon was raw, and the salad was a travesty... the leaves were not chopped so each time I tried to take a bite I knocked something off my skinny little plate. The deal breaker was that when I did get some of the greens to my mouth, they were as gritty or sandy as they could be.The biggest problem with the visit was not that I got a poor meal... Its that I was in such a hurry to leave that i couldnt give them a chance to make anything right. I had to hustle out the door. Everybody makes mistakes and, had I not been in such a rush, I would have preferred to give them the chance to see what they could do about it. I liked the people and really wanted to like the restaurant. Will still give them another shot next time - and may even order the same thing just to see if it was a fluke.
I have been here about 6 times. Atmosphere is good. Both bar and restaurant. I have never had a bad meal. Service has always been on point!
We waited til the dust settled a bit before we went to this new location. The service was fab. the food was even better. Everything is fresh what a concept for fast food. We have been back and will continue to go there. The employees are a delight and it;s ran very professionally.
Want to eat at a great restaurant in town? This is the place to visit! Not cheap, but definitely worth a special occasion. Have been here several times and love the dishes. I usually go with the salmon although Im usually too full off their delicious bread and olive oil! Great staff and ownership as well.
I love this restaurant! This was my first time eating here and it did not disappoint. Its family style and the servings are generous. We got the spaghetti and meatballs which tasted like my homemade, so good! The meatballs were HUGE! Also got the Italian soda which I loved but some may think its too sweet. Would definitely eat here again.
So we were heading home from Sacramento and had to pass through Modesto, about dinner time. This cool place was ranked #3, but I bet it will move up. We were greeted warmly (by Sarai? And she introduced us to our waiter Sharill. Everything was perfect: nice wine selection, tasty appetizer and entree,
This is an institution of Modesto. Unassuming from the outside. Great people that work there. Fantastic sandwiches and soups. The outside patio is a great place to have lunch or spend the afternoon reading. This is the definition of a hidden gem.
I ordered a chicken adobo that cost $21. It was good but not $21 good. I might have just ordered the wrong item. A colleague ordered the ribeye and it smelled amazing and he said t was really good. Ill probably go back again and try it.
When we arrived, the restaurant was full and the atmosphere was lively. I ordered a Filipino chicken dish and my wife ordered a beet salad, then we waited for almost an hour. When the food arrived, my wife tried hard not to look shocked, but the salad was 5 baby beets with a few arugula leaves strewn about. The menu stated you could add chicken and since she is a vegetarian she had also asked for tofu with the salad. For $6, she got a little bowl of squishy baked tofu pieces that had no sauce, seasoning or flavor (she couldnt even eat it). My chicken looked good, but wasnt very flavorful and was s a small serving that left me hungry. After paying $40 for "appetizers" (our two dinner entrees and water), we left to go eat dinner somewhere else. A big waste of time and money.
This is our favorite restaurant in Modesto. Much better than the higher priced Galleto. Weve been for dinner several times and always enjoyed the food. Great steak, risotto and pasta. I love the frito misto appetizer. We went for brunch once which was also great though I would recommend getting there a few minutes after they open since some of the food wasnt out yet when we got there right at opening.Great place for the whole family for brunch but too formal for kids at dinner.
