SHARAM COTTAGES - Historical place museum in Penola, Australia
Most of Petticoat Lane is a historical display. Sharam cottages with the herb garden is the highlight, bring gold coins.
Really interesting history and well preserved. Spent longer here than i was expecting
Great piece of SA history. Know a few houses with several layers of wallpaper and Lino on the floor ... and newspaper patching the ceiling. Truly a reminder of yesteryear and the garden is lovely
Great old cottages nice to see old places kept so younger ones can see how life use to be.
Absolutely brilliant history, step into the past on Pettycoat Lane, voyage gardens, sheep, a lama and old machinery, step back 170 years and imagine bringing up a family IOF 12 in two rooms
No visit to Penola is complete without strolling along Petticoat Lane and visiting Sharam Cottages. Wander through the cottages and take it the history of the walls and surrounding gardens. Make sure you check out the herb garden out the back.
Worth a visit. Great history.
Loved it. Well worth a look. This is my family history. Was very emotional.
Wonderful slice of settler life.
Must do if visiting Penola. Good to read about the history of life in the mid 1800s. To see the original buildings and their original locations in Petticoat Lane gives you a guide to life was like back then. Lots of placards with details of the lives and times and explanations about the construction method and materials of buildings, plants etc. Can highly recommend.
Went there geocaching.
Cant believe this has not been reviewed yet. A hidden gem in Penola, just down from the Mary Mackillop Centre. Read the historical sign at the start of the lane. The Sharam Cottages are 185m down the lane, but there are a number of other cottages to view along the way. Entry is by donation. It was fascinating to read the descriptions and photos of the way of life in the 1800s in these very same two buildings. How the dickens did 12 kids sleep in those two small rooms (read the story on one wall to find out). There is a herb garden out the back on one cottage where you can leave a donation for any herbs you pick. A pity the roofs have not been "restored" to the original look but are new corrugated iron. Still, well worth a stroll.
