We had a great experience at Rules. The bar area was super cool and unique. The atmosphere at the restaurant was awesome. The ribeye was average, nothing special. The dessert was very good. Since it’s such a cool place I would be happy to return in the future.

What a delight to sip cocktails, and dine at London’s oldest restaurant, Rules. Located in the Covent Garden area arrival by Tube or Black Taxi is very convenient. The interior is decorated wonderfully, and the staff are very welcoming and polite. We opted to arrive a bit early to enjoy a cocktail before dinner in the upstairs bar lounge. So beautiful! One feels they are in a tropical paradise. Service was prompt, and drinks were delightful. A staff member retrieved us when it was time to dine. Very nice as it allowed us to relax, and enjoy our cocktails.Dinner was divine! My dining companion started with the Carmelised Onion, Sage and Cider soup which is reminiscent of a French Onion soup, but lighter and has a lovely tang. I had the Dorset Crab Salad with toast. Heaven for crab lovers such as myself. For dinner, we had the special of Ribeye Steak with Peppercorn Sauce, the Roast Crown of Mallard, and an additional side of Dauphinois potatoes. The main course was superb! The steak was incredibly tender, and cooked to perfection. The duck with the spiced orange glaze, and accompaniments, paired so beautifully together for a perfect bite each time. The dauphinois potatoes were the best we’ve ever tasted. For dessert, we shared Rules Sticky Toffee Pudding. Neither of us had the pleasure prior, and the pudding was worth the wait. Wow!I highly recommend a reservation in advance. Note as well that no children are allowed for reservations beginning at 7pm which is quite nice for adult time. When in London, one MUST experience Rules.

Before the dinning, I really enjoy the old fashioned and this very historic beautiful restaurant.Staffs and services are excellent.Foods are traditional and good. But some plastic pieces found in my dessert. As a MICHELIN Guide restaurant, I feel disappointed.(Moreover, the wine list is really...boring.)

I didn’t have high expectations, usually when a business has been around as long as rules, they can rest on that age to being customers in the door and phone in the food and service. The service was outstanding, from the greeting at the door, the collection of coats, direction yo the table, and dining service, all the staff were extremely pleasant and helpful. The food were ordered were very generous portions and were delicious. Standouts were the beetroot, pear, and endive salad, the sirloin, and the salmon

We made a booking for lunch, to celebrate our birthdays. We always like to try somewhere new, with new experiences. We were greeted by friendly staff, our coats were taken and we were escorted to our table. The building interior was spectacular. The food was absolutely delicious. For starters, I had Devon Smoked Eel. I still remember the taste now. If I could have selected that as a main meal too, I would have. It was outstanding. So much flavour and the slices of radish and apple were a fantastic combination that complimented the Eel very well. For a main course, I chose Braised Venison. I wanted to choose something that I had never had before. It was extremely nice. The meat was very well cooked and sauce was very moreish. The chestnuts and fruit combination were exquisite. The fruit reminded me of mulled wine. All in all, the experience was great. The service was exceptional and it was an experience that we wont forget. When our parents visit, we plan on taking them here so that they can enjoy this experience as much as we did.

I found this restaurant on a travel blog that recommended it as its the "Oldest restaurant in London." I can see why its been open so long. The food and service were both stellar. I had the Steak and Kidney pie and can highly recommend it. My wife also had the best Espresso Martini that she has ever had.

It was a thrill dining at a restaurant that is hundreds of years old which holds so much history. My wife and I had the beef dish for two which included many traditional dishes such as Yorkshire pudding and sticky toffee pudding. Our waiter was very professional, attentive and above all, personable.

This ones long, because they deserve more effort than they gave me.My wife and I came here today and the experience was terrible. The tube was going through a strike and we couldnt even fit on the train so we had to walk 30 minutes to get there. My wife called (no answerand left a message starting we would be a few minutes late to our reservation. We made it 7 minutes late and the place wasnt very busy at all, but that didnt stop the host from being snide. Whatever, we were late, so if having an attitude makes him feel like a big man then so what.We sat down, the waiter brought water, never took a drink order, and then eventually came back for the food order. We placed our appetizer order and main course, and I asked about ordering dessert at that time or at the end. He responded by quickly picking up the menus and sharply said "Well well see if you have any room by then."Throughout the meal I think our waiter stopped by once to refill water, and did bring out the appetizers and the main course. Two other, much nicer waiters came by and we had to request our check from one of them. By this point we were tired of dealing with the place and chose to skip dessert. My wife and I are in our late 20s and in the past weve been to nice restaurants and dealt with the rudeness that comes with people thinking we didnt have any money, or dont have the "look" theyre after. Its happened quite often, but this one was right up there with the worst. We definitely felt rushed and unwanted there, and it was so thinly veiled it was almost comical. As for the food, its extremely overpriced for the quality. My wifes steak was a thin, cheap sirloin ($37slathered in sauce to veil its lack of quality. I got the braised venison ($27that was comparable to a crock pot brisket at your grandmothers house, and not the good kind. It was bland, and about half of it was just a gooey ball of fat. The best thing on that plate was the mashed potatoes that you get about a half a spoonful of. No complaints on the scallop appetizer, its pretty much on par with what you expect from a place like this.If you have to go to a nice dinner, I think there are about 1,000 better options in London.

Still Rules. Garden bar still making excellent cocktails. Unchanged menu of classics are delicious. My sole criticism would be allowing the Americans and Japanese in wearing, well pretty much anything. Anoraks, jeans, sweatshirts.. We were suited and booted as one should be. Im sure they have tried and lost customers as a result. However someone needs to maintain standards at £350 for three, one cocktail one bottle of wine

People misunderstand so many things these days. Do not misunderstand this: If you want to experience British Food at its best, dont think about these big name chefs like Ramsay and Co. Come Here! This is the real deal. The staff are first class, and nothing is too much trouble for them.So hospitable, so friendly, so exquisitely tasty. The pictures are of the Tandoori Quail starter, the Saddle of Rabbit main and of course, a Sticky Toffee Pudding.I cannot recommend the Sticky Toffee Pudding highly enough. This was the highlight of the meal (though that doesnt do the other dishes justice).Do yourself a favour as a treat. Go!

My rule is rather simple, if a restaurant could continue operating for a couple hundreds years, it has to be good. It is not cheap and somehow touristic but so what? The place is a museum and the food is traditional and delicious. The wine list is simple and featuring some interesting French wine imported directly.

An incredible experience! After an unexpectedly terrible experience in a similiar place in France, now in England i booked a table for me and my family for my brothers birthday, without telling them. Incredible and polite service, history-soaked restraunt. The food was fantastic, we got various plates, personally i took the Shrimps, the Halibut and a dessert i cant recall. Everything was delicious and cooked perfectly, they even guessed it was my brothers birthday after we sang "happy birthday" to him and gifted us a dessert with a candle on the top. I will surely come back the next time i visit London. Greetings from Italy!

The food was lovely and the atmosphere was delightful. The experience was disturbed, however, by outrageous behavior by the maitre d, who accused us of cancelling our reservation (which we absolutely did not doand of making a reservation that the restaurant could not accommodate. I cannot think of a time when I was insulted at a restaurant in this fashion. The accusatory tone with which he spoke to us was unfathomable and his refusal to accommodate the number in our party (the number for whom the reservation has been made and confirmedwas absurd when the ultimate solution simply involved adding one chair to the table. Indeed, we were ultimately served when calmer heads prevailed but I typically do not care to dine after being accused and insulted.

Absolutely amazing food and ambiance. Elegant space as well. This is a must for any restaurant goers bucket list. I had the rack of lamp and also tried my companions dishes: chicken leak and mushroom puff pastry, as well as the steak and kidney pie. All three were perfect; absolutely perfect! I was also impressed with the number and selection of (quite reasonably pricedwines. No notes for improvement for either the restaurant or the food. Id be remiss if I didnt also mention the friendly staff.

Rules is a lovely old restaurant and building with tons of history! The food was 5/5 stars amazing. Honestly the most lovely piece of beef and great cocktails. I also loved the caesar salad. The service was not great. The staff member servicing us said they didn’t have any recommendations when asked what their favorite or most popular drink/meal was. Also was speaking very softly, making comments as they took the plates. It was honestly just odd, really took away from such a nice experience otherwise. Not very welcoming.

Rules is an experience. The $20 cocktails is nuts, so I settled on the $10 Guinness. The Chicken and Leak pie was tasty, but really just a fancy frozen chicken pot pie, not sure the price made sense. The dessert was out of this world though. All in all the history mixed with the ambiance of the place and good food makes Rules worthy of a visit, at least once. But, be sure to get reservations and dress really, really nice.

We had a good experience here last week and thought that the food, staff and atmosphere were lovely. The gentleman who served us was kind, funny and helpful with the menu. This is truly a delightful restaurant. It has masses of appeal from a historical perspective and serves the most delicious food.We had cocktails to start that would blow your socks off!Oysters chilled and served with a sherry wine vinegar to help the cocktail go down.A starter of scallops with white garlic and butter with a hazelnut crumb were sweet and delicate. Potted shrimp with dressed rocket and sourdough toast was light and full of flavour!Mains of steak and kidney pudding with the finest layer of suet crust and the softest beef was a thing of pure indulgence and a daub of venison with a spiced jus and celeriac purée and crumbly chestnut topped off with a perfectly poached quince was the best dish to eat!A plate of English cheese to round off a delicious meal with port and coffee just topped a perfect dining experience

This is quite a difficult review to write as you almost have to review it in two halves, firstly the surroundings, history, the ambiance, and the way it makes you feel when you enter the restaurant, and you are taken back to TV and movie scenes. The crab starter was fresh and tasty but still just okay, the Rib of beef was good, but barely warm and we had nearly an hour between starter and main being delivered, all main course on the table were the same. Although the horseradish sauce and sides were excellent, desserts are simple but tasty. This was my first time there, but not for my friends whom all commented that it was far below previous visits. With a bill of £170 per head, I was expecting something special, the restaurant delivered this, but the food sadly didnt for me. Unfortunately I dont feel the need to go back and see if it was just a one off. Dont get me wrong Im glad I went, but London is full of places which delivery a better overal dining experience.

Great ambience as you expect, good selection of wines, great cocktails and aside the terrine that we ordered, the food was good. The steamed pud and lamb main were the highlight! Unfortunately thats where the positives end. Marketed as a game restaurant, there was no game on the menu or in the specials - which is a disappointment. For the restaurant of its stature, the service was just at par. When you pay the high prices, you expect food and service to follow, but it just didnt. Wouldnt be going back to be honest, not worth the spend but it is good to head there if you want to dine at the oldest restaurant in London :-)

Amazing food and friendly welcoming staff really make this place a must visit. White table cloths and no music make this place initially feel quite stuffy, but as soon as your greeted and shown to your seat I relaxed and had an absolutely lovely time.We had the black velvet- champagne and guiness which was delicious, the tarien, rump steak and sticky toffee pudding. Everything was cooked to perfection. If you are not much if a sweet tooth then steer clear of the sticky toffee pudding because it is very sweet.
