Museum in the pump house recounting Harrogate's story as a spa town, plus sulphur water tasting.
I really really enjoyed this pretty museum. The museum was peculiar or unique or quirky(?). I loved it along with the beautiful Harrogate.
Very interesting place, lots to see & read
Small building -Interesting visit- enjoyed spending 1 hour
Great visit. Its a shame you cannot drink the water out of the pump house.
Well worth a visit for the story behind Harrogate as a Spa town.Excellent focus on the hardworking local people who made it all possible.Very helpful and knowledgeable staff👍
Nothing is new on street free water taps outside the museum although thats do not appear to be potable.
Excellent museum ,nice to read into tge history
Very interesting information from the staff
Small museum with some interesting history about Harrogate and several exhibits but you are through it pretty quickly ....
Interesting exhibits at a reasonable price. Amusing to see all the weird treatments people used to subject themselves to. Dont miss the video of the therapies.
We visited just after opening on a Sunday and, at first was put off by the size of the building it was housed in, but decided to give it a go anyway. So glad we did because it was crammed full of displays explaining all about the history of Harrogate and the baths. The lady on the till was welcoming and explained things to us. £3.50 per adult. £2.50 for concessions. Pretty sure the opening times were 10am-4pm.
Such an interesting museum with lots of historical informations, displays, and the building is beautiful.
If you are interested in history and especially Harrogate history then this could be a place for you to visit. My wife and I visited and found it interesting and we just had to buy a fridge magnet on the way out.
Super park to walk through with tennis courts at one end , plenty of seating and shadey spots to sit in .Lovely colourful gardens.
We really enjoyed our visit and learnt so much, especially from the temporary exhibition about the workers who made it all possible. Special thanks to Helen, who gave us an excellent introduction.
This is a small museum and doesnt take very long to go through, but it does preserve a very interesting part of history for the area. It tells you about the treatments that people would receive from the mineral wells in Harrogate, and how the high levels of mineral deposits in Harrogates water put it on the map as a spa town and health center. The woman at the desk was very good and told us lots of information. While the museum could do with some updating and sprucing up, I am glad that we stopped by.
A very nice museum to spend an hour lots of info about the town ,dont drink the water from the outside tap attached to the building dont ask how I know 😉
Excellent museum explaining Harrogates historical spring water importance.Doesnt do its self any favours unfortunately by a rather drab entrance and looks closed! But a "must see" place when visiting Harrogate.Staff very knowledgeable and helpful.
A lovely and informative exhibition. Plenty of artifacts and pictures to tell the story of Harrogate. Well worth a visit.
A bit disappointing really. Nothing about how or where the waters come from, no sign of a pump and not a lot of exhibits.
Worth a trip to learn about the origins of Harrogate. There are a few exhibitions including that of Egyptian origin. The whole trip will take you less than an hour
Over here I totally recommend going here as there is fun stuff to do and look at here!
Really lovely little museum. Staff were wonderful.
A very interesting museum and very friendly staff (visited 1st March 2022). Extremely good value at £3.50.
Great little museum, not much to get in. Very interested about how Harrogate became a spa town due to magnesium and sulphur water springs. Afterwards, walk round the back of the museum and stand over the water grate for your first whiff of sulphurous water.🤭 If youre brave, you can press the button and ..it advises NOT to drink it!! 🥴
Worth a look, takes about an hour to walk round possibly more if you read everything, then you can go to the art gallery, thats free, may be buy a picture
A small, perfectly formed Museum. Worth an hour or more to find out about Harrogate as a fashionable spa town...and the rather weird treatments available to visitors!
We thoroughly enjoyed this.Due Chistmas shopping we were the only Vistors. The two lady staff were amazing with their knowledge and Christmas cheer.Excellent.
Great place to visit. Cheap entry and very interesting things to look at. Staff are very friendly and very knowledgeable. Would recommend. Thanks for a great afternoon.
Thoroughly interesting museum about Harrogates beginnings as a Spa town. Just the right amount of information well set out. Staff were delightful and helpful. Well worth a visit.
Amazing place. The building is gorgeous. Lots of information about its use as a healthy bath spa. Doesnt cost much to go in. Will take about an hour to look at it all.
Lovely museum to explore and walk around for the historic place in harrogate
Lovely building, interesting items exhibited, friendly staff. Nice little museum to visit.
Very well presented and informative on Harrogate and its history with an interesting temporary exhibition called Make Do and Mend on wartime clothing. All set in a lovely building.
Great little museum with lots of interesting items and information about the history of Harrogate and the pump rooms, and friendly and helpful staff. Great value for £3.50.
Disappointing. Paid £12 for family ticket but wasnt worth that. If you dont go on a guided tour (none scheduled when we went then you cant really see much of the wells (other than through a window looking down to the basement), nor can you really smell the sulphur. Theres nothing to explain the geology or sources of water, just info on the development and use as a spa. The old film of the treatments was interesting but not worth £12 imo. Some random Victorian and Egyptian stuff too.
Nice little museum, a variety of things to see, not just related to the pump, but Egyptian artifacts and vintage dresses. Would recommend the curator puts signs by exhibitions that had info in a folder you could look through.
My husband and I enjoyed exploring the history of Harrogate here. We really found the exhibitions interesting, and I would recommend to any museum-goer, historian or curious folk alike. 😊
A lovely little museum about the history of Harrogate as a spa town. Also some Egyptian antiquities. You cant sample the spa water at the moment, but you can see the original springs and Wells.
Great little museum with fascinating facts about the history of Harrogate and its springs. Lots of old curios and some technology of my childhood ! Really enjoyed our visit. Many thanks!
Got in for free during the heritage open weekend; slightly interesting but not sure I would pay to go in. Theres not a lot there and there are mistakes in some of the exhibits - e.g. a booklet that is apparently from the 80s but the price on the front is pre-decimalisation!
Very disappointing. Harrogate has a wealth of history and fantastic buildings but very little of this is reflected in the museum, indeed the town itself was a trial, noisy and too many vehicles spoiling the ambience. The museum is basically 1 room of displays and a wedding dress exhibition. I had hoped to see more information about the discovery and development of the waters and how Harrogate grew to such an important town.
Small location packed with loads of exhibits. Should take a half hour or less if you read the plaques and visit each exhibit. A brief tour of the lower level is only offered at set times each day. You’ll have to inquire to confirm what those are. It may not be a “must do” for some, but we enjoyed the visit.
Disappointing visit for £3.50 per adult, to find out after walking around the exhibits then returning to the kiosk 15 minutes later that the lower level well is only by scheduled time. Which is fine if I was told this on arrival and paying but no good when you cant return 3 hours later! Google images and information on line ticked all my boxes of curiosity of the pump room.
Interesting piece of British history. Museum itself is small and you can probably see it in 10 minutes. There is also the well walk which is at fixed times and you can go down to the basement level to see the Wells. Worth a visit when you are in Harrogate and if you are a history buff
Excellent layout, very interesting exhibits, children are well catered for and very reasonably priced. Well worth a visit.
A must if you visit Harrogate as this is where it all started and is why Harrogate is Harrogate and on the map. Found the history of Harrogate fascinating and the separate display areas meant that it was not hard work to view it all.
A nice little museum, as others have said it is quite small and doesnt take very long to get round. I wouldnt take my children there as theyre easily bored! But for me, it was very informative. Id definitely recommend going when there is a guided tour on (only on certain days and timesas then you get to go down to see the wells. If not, then you can see them through the glass at the top but its not a great view and definitely not the same experience.
Only really takes 20-30 mins but worth a visit to learn more about Harrogate and the history.
This is a great little museum. Explains the history of the area in relation to natural springs. This building has two wells. One with the strongest sulphurous water in Europe and the other which is 2 feet away had hardly any sulphur at all. Interesting Egyptian displays also. If you have skin problems, buy the local soap made with sulphur water. Its effects are quite amazing
