Underground replica Roman burial chambers in a quarry with frescoes & statues, open since 1910.
Great tour! A very impressive replica of some of the Roman tombs and frescos in Rome. Our tourguide Ben was very entertaining.Serious history but also nice jokes. He knows his stuff. We recommend this tour!
Not a REAL roman catacombs! Fake ! Created by some bored dutch guy to make money off you !
€16 per person to visit an Edwardian mock up
Closed.Tip: you can only visit when lead by a guide so plan your visit.
English speakers and internationals beware....our tour was only offered in Dutch which was not clear when booking. Spent €16 to stand listening to a very enthusiastic tour guide speak for an hour and a half straight. Wish there was an audio tour option or a specific tour for English speakers and internationals. Also, more time to explore and look around. The caves were interesting but the museum failed to engage.
we visited the catacomb and it did not exceed our expectations...
Is eigenlijk dus antiek.
I love history so this was an interesting tour. The guide was speaking Dutch most of the time but would give brief summaries in English for many things, and they provide a printed version in English to help you follow along as well, and even a lantern.I think this place will be of more interest to Christians than some others, but the cool factor of exploring subterranean carved rock chambers and passages makes it worthwhile to a larger audience overall.Be aware of 2 things: its somewhat cold so you might want a light jacket, and youll be underground with no cellular signal for a bit more than an hour.
Good to know before hand: it is ALL replicas of the Roman(as in ancient Rome,Italycatacombs, and not like there were any catacombs in this spot before. It was a bit unclear to us when we booked the tickets. Unfortunately, some facts given by the guides were also not scientific (archeological in this casefacts. It’s fun for the amusement quality and a little bit of art history.
Beautiful place! Amazing tour and tour guide
Nice volunteers. Nice catacombs. The tours are in Dutch only with English stories printed on paper that you can read yourself. Not an ideal experience as the cave is dark and the guide didnt exactly follow the stories in the printed paper nor did he tell us which locations we were in. Museum should invest in modern audio tour that foreign tourists will be more than willing to pay for.
Really fun experience. The story behind this place is for sure interesting especially when seeing it by yourself. The walk is not steep or slippery, though they do request you mind not making too much dust. There are some stairs.
Apart from the fact that these are not real Roman catacombs, the experience is ok.
Great place for a quick hour visit .the guide is super fun to go around with .bring a jacket, its cold :)
Excellent visit. Interesting with a guide who knew his subject. Small group of six - tour was in Dutch(ok for me)
Very nice replica. Looks good.
On our way to Aachen we decided to make a quick stop at the Roman catacombs. Entrance fee is euro 12,50, but if you have a museum card it is free. We were a cosy group of 10 people and had a tour from a friendly and well informed man. It was very cool to see what the Dutch could replicate from the origin Roman catacombs in Rome. Oh, and its cold down there, so bring a something warm, especially in winter.
Very interesting. Wish we could have wandered around by ourselves a bit since during the tour you walk past quite few areas of interest where theres no time for.
This was a very interesting tour, which was offered in several languages. Ours was only in English by choice. This did offer more time to see more of the catacombs. Its origin, and use during the war and the explanation given by the guide were all quite interesting to learn. If you have an hour and a bit to spare, and dont dislike history its strongly recommended that you visit! Do mind that flash photography is prohibited, so if you want to go there for documentation get good equipment.
I would recommend this place, the tour guide explained everything so well (in Englishand with so much enthusiasm. I learned a lot!
Super awesome! The guide was absolutely amazing, had a lot of information to tell and told it in such an interesting way. Really great guy. He summarized everything for the few english people in english each time. His english was good. The tour was one hour and 15 minutes long but it felt like only half an hour. Couldve listened to the guide talk for another hour.Quite impressive how the whole thing was build and to hear the history of the romans and religions etc. These are replicas ofcourse, but still interesting to see.Recommend going here for sure! One of the best tours in Valkenburg.
Boring
Great experience, quite impressive! At this museum they gathered the best of all Catacombs from Rome and made from it a master work. The guide who walked us was a very nice and experienced lady, with tons of knowledge about archaeology and history. Be prepared: temperature is always 12 Celsius and it can feel very cold. At the museum they can borrow you a jacket but its better to bring your own.
Reconstruction of the catacombs in Rome. Less creepy vibe as in Rome, but nice hidden gem
Interesting tour given. These are replicas though!
Replica
Probably should have done my research before going in. The whole point is it being fake, but I only learnt that upon going in and was very disappointed. At €16 way too expensive for what it is and guide not particularly gifted at story telling. You wont miss much if you skip this. Better visit the Fluweelengrot for an authentic underground experience
Pretty cool but so fake
Its great to see these replicas of the Roman Catacombs especially the ones that are not accessible to the public in Rome. You need to go on a tour to see them which lasts about 1 hr. The tours are in Dutch but the guide will explain the highlights in English so if you do a little bit of research before you go you might get a bit more out of the experience. We used our Dutch museumkaart for free entry. They also had an art installation in the catacombs during our visit that anyone could go and view.
Our young tour guide knew close to nothing about the catacombs (didnt even know how they were buried.. Thats THE main thing there). Didnt know about history either and also said like 5 time "my history knowledge is bad". The place itself felt unprofessional and a cheap replica , also the "special" light show (Wishthat costs 5 euro felt like it was build by one child and didnt add anything, on their website they made it look like they had a great exposition covering the catacombs, but that was phototrickery and misleading..there were 5 small light objects / rooms that really wasnt worth a single dime. Highly discourage anyone going there.
A beautiful experience.
:( really bad service
not much to be seen.
Very strange place - roman catacombs in NL but yes, its interesting nice excursion! If you are in the neighbourhood you should go!
Really surprising tour, lots of interesting information, enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide. Its not so much tombes that were made by the romans as its an exact(!replica of the most interesting and beautiful tombes from the outskirts of Rome.
Since I visited in the summer the trip around the catacomb was only one hour but the tour guide mentioned that it would take a day if we were to go into every chamber. This was a great experience that I definitely wouldnt miss!!!! The guide was the sweetest young lady who explained the stories and the background about the catacombs/ everything we saw in there. The guide in the airborne museum jacket really made the whole experience worth it. I also liked that we walked together with candles lit as that really added to the whole experience. The only negative point would be the price but MORE SO knowing that there were so many more interesting paths down there that were left unexplored.
Interested in history? Want to get away from the tourist hustle and bustle of Valkenburg? This is the place. Lovely recreations of Roman catacombs make for a unique experience. Friendly staff too! Highly recommended.
A unique place in the netherland one of hollands great architects Berlage was inspired by the rome catacombs and made exact copies of the undercities of Rome. Despite the german forces trying to destroy the caves for ammunition storage (yeah I know; right?! the caves survived and are being painstakingly restaured volunteers. GO and visit this unique place in the world, it will be an experience you remember for the rest of your life. And after youve been go and get a leeuwtje, you deserved it
