Rhodes Ave, Devil's Peak, Cape Town, 7700, South Africa, Rondebosch
Ornate monument to diamond magnate Cecil Rhodes, offering stunning mountaintop views & a restaurant.
Great place to clear the mind and enjoy the view
The Rhodes Memorial building itself has been reopened to the public & as before the views of Cape Town are beautiful. However, because of the major cleanup that has taken place since the veld fire that swept through the memorial area in April2021, the area which was once full of trees, now has very few so the atmosphere is quite sombre. There are also still a lot of felled dead trees just lying there uncleared away which could provide fuel for further fires (a major risk for this area which fairly often is exposed to fire risk). The other sad thing to see is that very little attempt appears to have been made to clean up the old café area 😞 All that remains of the once vibrant, beautiful, quaint eatery, is badly damaged ruins which are getting overgrown by weeds... Please be careful of your footing around this section - there are no warning signs or anything to prevent access & the remnants of wooden benches & concrete tables still litters the ground & the remains the walls of buildings dont look terribly stable - in some places being shored up by sandbags... so I would exercise your extreme discression, & perhaps not let children anywhere in that section.
The area looks quite different after the major wild fire, there isn’t that many big trees anymore, mostly just wild flowers. The cafe is replaced by a small food truck which isn’t open. The view is still magnificent though. Worth a visit.
Sad state since the fire but there is a little trailer that sells coffee and snacks, great service.
It is with sadness that I report that the place is in poor condition. It’s been some time now after the devastating fire and no signs of revamping the place. I went there with my daughters and felt quite unsafe. Definitely not eager to go back. I really hope the politics behind the restoration is put aside for the benefit of both tourists and locals
The restaurant is still burnt down. But the view from there is spectacular.
It was a quiet and wonderful place A good place to take pictures and meditate!
This monument was built more than 100 years ago, yet it still looks like it was built yesterday. Its a great place to get away and take breather while enjoying panaromic views of the city of Cape Town. From the top you see both the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean. Its nice quiet space to read a book or just sit and enjoy the air and the beautiful city of Cape Town.
Ugly beautiful... The restaurant was burned down so you will have to take folding chairs, some wine and snacks to enjoy the stunning views.
stayed at the City Lodge Cape Town which was conveniently located about a 10 minute walk from the main part of the V & A Waterfront. The rooms were comfortable and well kept, the breakfast was very good and had a great selection. My only complaint would be that the supposed pool was nothing more than a large jacuzzi. Overall, I would stay here again for the price it was very nice, and the staff was very friendly. The Sights: As a first time visitor to South Africa, I did most of the tourist things. I travelled to Cape Point for a day and was not disappointed. The scenery in and of itself was worth the trip, a look to the right and you could watch the waves of the ocean crashing over beautiful rock formations and against the coast. A look to the left and I was amazed at the mountains and scenic views. Upon reaching the Cape Point Nature Park one sees wild baboons, ostriches, and gazelle type animals right along the road. The views from the point light house are fantastic and the weather was perfect.I spent another day on Table Mountain, which forms the backdrop of the city. Again, the views from the top are well worth the cost of the cable car ride. After leaving table mountain we travelled to Stellenbosch and the wine region. Make this a day and hire a driver to take you so that you dont have to worry about driving. I would recommend Simonsig Vineyards, and La Motte Winery as excellent choices.Another day was spent at the botanical gardens, and while it was mid summer and most of the plants were not in bloom, the beauty of the area and the scenic views are very nice. I would love to see this in the spring when the thousands of plants and flowers are in bloom. Followed this up with a walk through the Company Gardens and Greenmarket square in Downtown Cape Town.
Will always go back to my training grounds
This memorial honours Cecil John Rhodes. It has a lot of controversy attached. Unfortunately it has vandalised in the past. However, take a trip and view it and the glorious view below. It is located in a beautiful setting. Entrance is free and there is plenty of parking.
Not much there other than the monument but that is worth seeing because it is VERY impressive and the views are to die for!
No other way to describe it, but absolutely serene.
Wonderful views of Cape Town and a really unique monument. It is worth the visit. Currently, the only restroom is a port-a-potty and drinks and snacks are served from a temporary trailer. Hopefully, the new restaurant will begin construction soon.
Great place to go any time of the day, preferably morning sunrise, to go relax and unwind, enjoying the picturesque views.
Was great visiting Rhodes Memorial after last years terrible fire. San Parks however needs to get the wood removed to ensure the safety of visitors. Looking forward to the restaurant being rebuilt.
Incredible panoramic views of Cape Town!
Stumbled upon the memorial while on a hike up the mountain.Quite pretty, bigger than expected and wonderful views.Would be nice if they cleaned up the take away bags stuffed away in the crevices and kept the knowledge board legible.
You can get very wide nice view of cape town
A great spot for a quick mountain drive or to workout on a Saturday morning. One of my favorite spots
I love this Cape Town spot. Views to die for. Relaxed atmosphere and its free. The family love coming here for the peace and quiet. Always good to learn a little about our history as well when we are here. Make the effort. Its worth it.
The views were breathtaking and the tea garden is a quaint place. A good place for photos. However, although the restaurant provides good portions the food is not that amazing.
Beautiful views and good food. We arrived early so the restaurant was not busy and we received our food very quickly and it was very nice as well. I had the English breakfast and it was good. The scone was huge and very nice. We all enjoyed our food and coffees. Very good coffee. Keep it up
The views are breathtaking. There is a wedding venue here which looks like the ideal setting for the start of a marriage.
Beautiful location with a nice view. Very well designed memorial.
What a beautiful place to watch the sunrise or sunset. Its also perfect for a bit of exercise. A few runs up and down those steps will have you feeling good.
Beautiful scenery, amazing architecture, full of history, just a little dirty... water stains... unsure of if its truly water or urine.
Its a good starting point from to hike up to Devils peak. Have some challenging steep climes but my 10year old son was able to do it. We came down by road at table mountain and jog our way back on mostly disused tar road. Open from very early in the morning and best part is that its totally FREE!! Best of all one can bring your dog along for some good exercise.
What an amazingly beautiful view from this piece of history. I will certainly be visiting this place again. If youre coming in winter , dress warm.
Its an iconic and sometimes divisive part of the Cape Towns history and culture. Its also an informal wedding photography venue because of the views over the suburbs.Great place to meet when planning hikes and the best bit? Theres no entrance fee.Could be a bit more wheelchair friendly and toilets could be better too.
Beautifull view over the Cape Flats .. there is a very nice tea garden where you can enjoy a good meal and relax with a nice drink to take in the view of the mountain. There is also a stonewall chappel for a mountain wedding.
Do a take away coffee and panne choc au lait at this landmark either early morning when the air is clearer for a fantastic view or early afternoon for a sunset spectacular! Due this memorial being a popular tourist attraction, be aware of your fellow visitors - its a bit of a mugging hotspot so keep in groups. The imposing grecian architecture is a site to behold!
Historic site visit that must be done if you are in Cape Town. Also enjoy a nice coffee and tea garden experience.
Stunning view over the city! Unfortunately vandalism has taken place on the statue of Mr Rhodes, but truly specular view on a beautiful day.
Herbert Baker, one of our most celebrated architects and the man behind the celebrated and well loved Rhodes memorial, did a fantastic job with this timeless tribute to diamond pioneer Cecil John Rhodes. The view and completely different perspective one gets from here as apposed to the view from Table Mountain is amazing. You actually then truly understand the size of Cape Town. Facilities are neat and well maintained. Lovely spot for picnicking as well as lovely opportunity to take family, especially the kids to a little lesser known place in the history books these days. Refreshments are available as well as manned parking( when I was there), and wheelchair accessible. Basically all and Sundry can make an outing to our most treasured pioneers.
Lovely view and lovely place to start your hike from .. At first we didnt know you could park up there so we parked at the gate in parking area there and we went hikking from there up was lovely and there lots of parking at Rhodes Memorial Its self.
Pretty views, lovely hikes and trail runs. Please be careful though. My car was broken into.Ideally dont leave any valuables in the car and go on a group. Theyre are rangers but its a big area to patrol.
The memorial of Cecil John Rhodes. It is situated at the foot of Devil Peak and was designed by renowned architect Sir Herbert Baker. This memorial is a bit run down and has unfortunately been vandalized a bit. It is however still a great place to go with the family. There is also a lovely tea garden next door.
Incredible views of the city. Wonderful place to hike and enjoy nature. Perfect escape from the city, just outside the city. Definitely worth a visit
Its a very quiet place where people sometimes go for wedding photography. Theres no fee to get in and theres beautiful view of Capetown.
Wonderful views over Cape Town, the restaurant is a really nice place to sit and chill with spectacular views too. Its a real shame to see the vandalism that has occurred to the statue.
Such a tranquil and beautiful spot above the hustle and bustle of the city. Very tourist friendly, frequently visited by locals - a definite must see if youre new to CPT
Besides the beautiful hiking trails and the rich history of the memorial, the restaurant also makes your trip up the mountain worthy. Good food, great service and awesome city views all from the canopy of the forest......What more could one ask for?
Always a favourite from childhood days but sad to see it feeling a bit run down and some defacing taking place. Beautiful views and lovely areas for a picnic on a warm day whole kids can explore the monument and get their photos taken on the link statues
A place rich in history and charisma. You can feel the fresh, crisp air, a landscape rich in flora and fauna. Looking at the life-like bronze statue you would know a man who knows quite places and simple pleasures. With a tea garden, great for a family break. With breathtaking views of Capetown, The Cape front in all its splendour. Cant have enough of this paradise
Its worth a visit to see the view. But when I did some research about Cecil Rhodes I wasnt too pleased to find out about his policies for non whites. But then again I shouldnt be surprised. Do your research and make up your own mind.
Incredible view overlooking the Cape Flats! Only downfall is that it isnt always too well maintained. Often lots of weeds growing between the paving and a strong scent of urine!
The location is quite scenic-there are great views of the city all round. It used to be a great place to jog up to. But, has recently been at the center of a number of muggings and rapes. Make sure you go as a big group and try no to take any valuables. Be sure try out the cafe behind the memorial-it is quite relaxing up here.
Magnificent place to eat out located on the outskirts of Cape Town of you want something different. I had for lunch ostrich and couscous and it was delicious!!! It was my first time trying it (ostrich), so I was on for a good surprise. Totally recommended.
