Restaurante José María in Segovia

There is too much hype for this restaurant. The food was good, not great. The service was very frenetic and erratic, it seemed that the servers didn’t work in concert at all.

José Maria is a traditional and long standing restaurant that is frequently awarded for its cochinillo asado. The roasted piglet is the star of the restaurant and brought out and cut by its owner/chef. He cut the piglet in pieces with a plate, the traditional way. The meat was juicy and the skin, perfectly crispy! The house red wine was perfect with the pork. The croquetas as an appetizer were perfect to share and full of creamy flavor. I highly recommend this restaurant in Segovia if you’re looking for it’s famous dish, the roasted pig!

This is the place. This is Jose Marias one of the best places that serve the cochinillo, the signature dish of Segovia. We made reservations and arrived on time. Its a small store front, but once you go in it goes deep. They have a lot of tables in there.When you first go in, you pass through a bar area that is packed with people. They dont have outdoor seating that people love so much in Spain so they offer complimentary tapas with drinks so people go in to get the free tapas.The wait staff were all men. We got some drinks and some chorizo and Iberian ham for appetizers. Theyd bring out a little piggy, show it to the diners and then cut it up on a table in the middle of the dining area. They distribute the different sections of the piggy to the diners.I gotta tell ya. I wasnt that impressed with the cochinillo. The Iberian ham was awesome as were the chorizos, but the cochinillo was kind of dry and chewy. I had a leg section, and Precious got the chest section which had some fat on the ribs, but it was still dry and chewy, and it didnt seem to have much flavor, not spiced hardly at all. The skin was good though.Am I glad we tried it? Of course. But its not all that. Add to that the $100+ bill for two people, and I would not recommend this place. Sorry

Food was ok but not great. We had the cochinillo and shrimp scampi. Nothing to write home about. It was actually a bit gimmicky.Service was ok but waiters are a bit surly.

One of my favorite restaurants. Make reservations in advance. The Cochinillo and Solomillo Foie are awesome. Staff is very friendly and attentive, you will feel the premium service you deserve for every euro spent. Is worth to travel here from Madrid anytime, beautiful city and fun road trip across Guadarrama.

Amazing cochinillo in segovia with great service as well. They have a red wine that is exclusively supplied to this restaurant called the "Pago de Carraovejas" (Ribera del dueroAutor 2018 - which compliments the cochinillio nicely as well. The most moist, tender, delicious, fall off the bone, juicy pork Ive ever had, and Ive had pork in many places in the world. Well worth the trip here for this alone. Service is impeccable as well.

Famous place with good food, but not a place for locals any more. Reservations are pretty much a must. Prices are kind of high and the waiters try to get you to order more food than necessary. The dishes we had were vert tasty.

Very nice and tasty. The cochinillo frito was quite nice but a little dry but stillTasty. Everything was excellent but the best the was the calamari! It wasn’t on the menu, but it was the best I’ve ever had in Spain!

Wonderful tapas! They dont cut corners. The place is welcoming. Its Segovia for segovianos as well as foreigners.

A popular place for tapas and dining. We didn’t make a reservation and was shown a table in the basement. The service from when we entered till leaving was good and attentive. The food was so good! The roasted asparagus from the Spring Menu was simply seasoned to bring out the flavour of the produce. I had the baked hake from the Spring Menu, it was generous and delicious. My friend had roasted pig and it was very tender, it does not come with any side dishes though. Price is a bit on the high side, while the food was worth the price, other items such as bread(1.75 euro per piecewere overpriced.

I don’t even eat pork, so I wasn’t sure this place would deliver. However we had a few seafood plates and they were fantastic. The appetizers, deserts, everything we tried was just delicious. Olmos took care of our table and was very welcoming and helpful.

Caro but worth the price. Dont eat too much tapas or starters before because you wont have space for the cochinillo!I think if you go on a weekend its worth reserving a table

An unforgettable experience. From good preparation till the service. The owner raven came to our table making sure everything was ok ( he did it at all tables as well and if something is missing( hes very old and I just admired how he appreciates every guest at his restaurant). If you visit Segovia go and eat there. The food... well the "cochinillo" was delicious so juicy and tender it leaves you like a new man or a woman. 10/10. !!

thoroughly enjoyed the place from the tapas bar in the waiting area to the dining. bar was nice n affordable. their house red wine was good. tapas was nice too. the highlight has to be the roast pig. juicy n savoury. the portion will be nice to be shared by 2 so u have more space for the tapas before meal. sure worth a try if you are touring segovia!

Segovia is well-known for the Cochinillo asado. But it is a little greasy, you may share this dish with people or order one glass of sagria!

We ordered two portions of the roasted piglet, a roasted vegetable dish and a green salad for three people. The piglet was roasted perfectly, with crispy skin and tender meat. The service was excellent.

Nice service but the food was just ok. The fillet steak not great.

Cochinillo is one of the flagships of Castilian cuisine and Jose María honors it outstandingly. Arrived to Segovia in the morning and we didn’t make a reservation so we went straight to the restaurant to book. Full. Nothing available. I told the lady to write my name and number to have lunch at 4pm anyway. Went for a walk, came like at 3 to the “tapas?” area had some Ribera ( They work with Pago the Carraovejas and some judiones , and before we noticed it , one of the waiters I spoke in the morning recognized us and told us they had a table available. Staff is extremely accomodating here. We had the traditional piglet , very crunchy on the outside and juicy as a rotisserie chicken. Insane. And the boneless one with apple nuances, crunchy, sweet and sour. Outstanding. José María himself is hands on cutting piglets and he even dropped by our table to make sure everything was in order. Must come. Book in advance if you can or do what we did, but don’t miss this while in Segovia.

The one word Id use to describe todays meal is sensational. I really dont understand some of these negative reviews - almost seems like a different restaurant. I had lunch here today and this was one of the best meals Ive had in recent memory. Its the perfect combination of the traditional meeting the modern. I was a bit skeptical going in thinking it would be quite touristy but it absolutely is not. The chorizo as a starter was great, the 21st century salad might have been one of the most delicious dishes Ive ever had, completely next level and innovative and not to be missed, and of course the pig was unique, tender and sublime. And for those who appreciate farm to table you wont find much fresher than this as the slaughter date of the pig was yesterday. I also had the house wine which is from the bodega owned by the owner and it was just outstanding as well. Had a look at the bodegas website which is about an hour from Segovia and no question Ill visit on my next trip to the area. A superb restaurant with great service and I will certainly return. The casual, relaxed, timeless vibe and authenticity adds to the experience. Their gastro/tapas bar looks great too.

Let me first say that the waiter who served us was extremely kind and diligent. We had come right when they opened and got a nice dish to try from the chef. They serve you bread ( which even if you didn’t ask for you pay for it). We had the lamb to say it was the driest and probably the blandest lamb I’d ever tried would not justify what we had. It feels super local but the food was extremely disappointing and even though we can early and there was tons of table we were put in the far end corner far from everything. Extremely disappointing and so expensive

This was a nice restaurant that had really good gluten-free bread, good meat, and good seafood. They also knew about celiac disease. The only thing we didn’t like about it was the waiter was very rude when we asked if the soy sauce on the salmon had gluten in it. It was marked gluten free on the menu, but I wasn’t sure because other restaurants haven’t always realized that soy sauce has wheat in it. He acted very exasperated and would not check with the kitchen. I ended up getting a different fish, and luckily, I didn’t get sick. Lastly, as a celiac, the only other thing I worried about was the heaps of bread and crumbs that they put straight on the table.

Not to be missed and worth the extra ££ for the cochinillo in my opinion compared to other places in townExcellent service throughout and delicious meal

The signature dish is absolutely Amazing , Nice and tender and juicy on the inside , and a perfect crunch on the outside , if you want a Whole one , come with a group of 6 people 👌

This is a great place to have the dish of the region even though I did not tried it since you need help eating the cochinillo. The entrance of this place is very casual perfect for a drink and some tapas. The sitting area acomodares a few large tables for at least 4 people per table. I tried the parities de la casa, pumpkins soup with natillas ( this was my favorite thingtaco de ciervo en su salsa with red berries sauce, a beer of the region and for desert the ponche de Segovia.The service is veré attentive and friendly. I will be back perhaps with more people to I can tackle the dish of the region. Cochinillo asada for which they are known.

Always excellent. Ive been having Jose Marias cochinillo for several years with my family and its never disappointing. The quality of the meat is outstanding. This time I had the classical cochinillo roast, memorable as always. But I also tried a new version of the dish consisting in rolled pork meat with an apple sauce and I absolutely loved it. The Pago de Carraovejas wine is also a must in this restaurant. Quite different from the common Ribera del Duero wines, original and perfectly paired with the pork meat. Finally we tried two desserts, the apple pie and the red wine sorbet. I enjoyed the pie more, with the perfect amount of cinnamon and slight touches of cookie, but the sorbet is a rare delight that I havent found in other places.On average, this is not a cheap restaurant, but its worth every penny. Dont order too much food, as the pork is a really heavy meat, and youll have an amazing meal for 40-50€ per person. And youll always want to come back.

Long queues and best to make a reservation. Suckling pig skin was crispy and the meat very tender. A portion is good for sharing among 2. Octopus was just average and we ordered a salad which was refreshing. Price was on the high side but worth a visit. A portion of the pig cost ~24 Euros.

This place was recommended by our Airbnb host as to where the locals go - and so right she was, the food was great! There was a big crowd when we first arrived (so best to make a reservationbut they were still able to accommodate us. While we did not order the suckling pig, many of the tables around us did and it is quite a spectacle.

One of the best restaurants we have tried in our Spain trip! We are lucky to get a seat without reservation.Ordered their specialty cochinillo, but more amazing is their burrata salad.When ordering cochinillo, 1 order for 2 persons is enough, order something else as well, all their food taste so good!Btw, the price here is high. So be prepared:)

Fantastic meal from start to finish. The most memorable dinner of our week trip in northern Spain. We just happened to search and find this restaurant 15 minutes before we walked over to find out if they could seat us without a reservation. We decided on the 5 course tasting menu knowing full well we couldn’t finish it all but it was a selection of local dishes from the region and that was the appeal. Best decision ever. Every dish was amazing and wine was included in the price.Watching the show they make of the whole roasted pig come out on the platter and be chopped up and served on the plate before your very eyes was unforgettable.Great service, amazing food, I’d recommend to anyone visiting this region to stop in Segovia for the history of the town and the food here.

Super busy place. Looks like the place for a mandatory stop. Local tapas at the bar. A tapa os included with the drink. Awesome red wine!! They also offer lunch and dinner all day long. Seriously, a place to stop by.We passed by several times and it was always busy. If you want to sit at a table, better reserve in advance or wait for it while warming up at the bar.

The suckling pig is amazingly delicious. I would literally come back to Segovia just to taste this delicacy once again!The mini pig was cut in front of the tables by using the plate. That was quite an experience.The crunchy skin added the special taste.

This was the best pig dish that Ive ever had in my life. The service was a bit on the slow side but likely because the servers had many tables, not that they were not attentive. The suckling pig is a must try. I had the bean soup as well, but the suckling pig stole the show. 10/10 would recommend. We stopped in Segovia with a tour group, was given about 55 minutes to eat and we had to spend 16 of it just getting to this place, round trip (from the aqueduct)... we skipped our tour through the city for this meal and would do it again if I could. HIGHLY recommend and definitely enjoy the show of how they cut the pig... would recommend splitting a pig between 4-6 people depending on hunger levels and if theres a kid in the mix. We ordered for 2 but split the pig with another couple in the room.

The place itself it’s very cozy and familiar, but unfortunately a bit pricey, something I could expect from such a touristic place as Segovia.The food is well prepared and the portions are not bad.The take away service is very convenient and the staff is very friendly.A good place to go from time to time.

Can’t say enough about our time at this restaurant. We started at the bar for drinks & snacks, then moved to the dining room and ordered the pairing dinner. The wine & food was excellent, what an experience!

Ive had cochinillo (suckling pigin Segovia three times and this is by far the best one. Excellent restaurant prices not so expensive, great service and very cozy.

We arrived when the chefs were about to clock out, informed their menu would be ‘short’. Our language barrier could not detect how short! We are on a weird meal schedule since arriving here... small frequent meals like all day! This place is tops. Service is a leading factor. So impressed. Well done Jose Maria!!

Very good. Clean, comfortable, tasty food. The best little roasted pork I have ever eaten.Very nice place and big, the kitchen is all time open and working, but te Roma use to be crowded. Better to reserve one or 2 days in advance. The local wine is just wonderful.

When we travel around the world, we try to pick one meal as our lifetime experience. In Japan, we picked puffer fish and we picked Cochinillo in Spain. We ordered the tasting menu for two and it included wheat bread, one bowl of beef liver stew, one cup of white wine and one bottle of red wine, three Salads(duck meat, Asparagus and one unknown), one bean soup , two main courses(Slice hake fish on false ali-oli garlic sauce and the famous Cochinillo: roasted suckling pig and ended with ice cream/dessert and coffee. It is only 50 Euros per person for this feast. Both my wife and I couldnt finish the suckling pig even though it is so tasty. The waiter helped us to pack the left-over in a box to let us bring it home. The next day, we took this "left-over" to Retiro Park, Madrid. My wife claimed that this is the best Cochinillo she has ever had even eating in cold, compared with Chinese, Thai and Filipino Cochinillo. Ha, Ha. What a new discovery, maybe, we all should try Cochinillo in cold dish.

Great tasting foods, loved cochinillo and hand-carved jamon de bellota. Cutting cochinillo with plate is very interesting and entertaining. Very attentive professional service. Classic interior with linen table setting..simple and elegant...enjoyed dinning at Jose Maria...Two Thumbs up!!

The suckling pig was very juicy and tender. The baby lamb was okay but not that impressive comparing to the suckling pig. They would bring your pig and cut it in front of you using a plate if you order 3-4 suckling pig. Lucky enough that the chef José María showed up and served the table next to us.

If youre here, then you must have heard about Segovia roasted suckling pig(cochinillo)!Take your time to make a reservation before hand as it will be stuffed with people at lunch time! I ordered only two plates, a lamb shoulder salad (corderitoand the roasted suckling pig.The salad was acid, but a really good plate to start with! The cochinillo is so tender it blends on your tongue, and some parts of it feels like chicken drumsticks! The sauce is pretty salty, so Id suggest having it with the salad or at least some bread.The salad (to share, 19€is big enough for 4 persons, the cochinillo is 26€ per person. We were 2, so we couldnt finish your salad.

Great place to try suckling pig in Segovia. Fairly pricy but understandable for fancy restaurant atmosphere. The staff here are very friendly and very accommodating. Its a two part restaurant. The front of house is a bar, the back is a fancy restaurant.

The food was ok but wonderful mixed vegetables. The sangria was some of the best we had of our 10 day trip. We had an overall mixed experience due to one really unpleasant waiter. Other waiters were nicer. Was also extremely expensive!! I was not really impressed and could have completely skipped if for a less popular place down the street.
