Restaurante Borikén - Restaurant in San Juan, Puerto Rico
Simple and Delicious.Flank Steak, tostones, arroz & bichuelas.
Bad experience. The waitress had zero cares and quickly ran from the table! The food was less that edible. Sadly wont return to this restaurant! The chicken (chunks/chucks depending on what section of the menu you order fromwas dry and without any flavor. Sadly the mozzarella sticks were the best part of the meal....
Go hungry! The portion size is large, but the food is good. They had a local band playing and we could still have a conversation. Overall a good experience.
We met friends at this small restaurant in Old San Juan, focused on Puerto Rican food, music and culture. We were rewarded with the sound of Tony Mapeyé and his ensemble, playing música típica. It is easy to get a table before 8:00. After that the place fills up on performance nights. The menu offered Puerto Rican tapas and some tried-and-true favorites like mofongo, bisté encebollado, and arroz con habichuelas, all of which we ordered. It was delicious. The café has a nice wine list and a bar. The service was excellent. The location at Plaza Colón can’t be beat because of its accessibility!
To start of we had a great server! Super nice and well attentive. The food was amazing and had amazing flavors. Not only is the food and service great but also the live band. The band was super smooth and well toned music. My family and i sat outside enjoying the beautiful weather and music. I highly recommend!
This restaurant is reasonably priced, in my opinion. They served the best Pina Coladas Ive ever had; also I really enjoyed my skirt steak, rice, and beans. Wonderful place in a good location, especially if you are docked on a cruise ship. I will definitely return!
I went inside this restaurant because I could smell the coffee from outside. I immediately ask for coffee. Then I ended up staying because of the menu. Our male waiter was very friendly. Lovely human being very attentive. He Introduce me to the best Puerto Rican hot sauce. yes ...very delicious!!!🙌🙌🙌The food was delicious. The mofongo the sauce was very delicious. the yellow rice was delicious . The place is very beautiful and clean inside.FYI (The bartenders she should be more friendly and smile.)
Delious food and such a beautiful environment to enjoy typical Puerto Rican food. Staff super friendly and helpful. Will not disappoint if you visit.
Love this restaurant. It’s a nice little cafe essentially and the staff are so nice. They have tables outside and inside. We went on a week day so it was pretty empty but the food was AMAZING. We were in there just savoring the culture and the love they put into the food. If I’m ever in Puerto Rico again I will definitely be eating there again.
Was not satisfied with the food, it can be way better. Service was fine.
I asked for the Chicken breast with the Creole sauce just to try something different but upon receiving it was like they got it from the freezer because it had that taste to it. The sauce was like spaghetti sauce, kind of upset about it because I came for a taste of Puerto Rico and got a taste of a very low quality Olive Garden. The mofongo was okay, nothing over the top. The only thing that gave this review the stars was the live band, that was awesome.
Best food I have had so far!! And a fight for top mojito. Had the stuffed mushrooms for an app and the salmon as a main with sweet plantains and green plantains as sides. Came with similar sauce as another restaurant but better and better priced than similar restaurants
The food here is authentic Puerto Rican food, great service, cozy atmosphere. I had the bistec encebollado con arroz y habichuelas. The pic doesnt di it justice. I encorporated my rice and beans before the pic.
Skirt steak trifongo with wine and mushroom sauce was absolutely amazing. Got rice and beans and added the artisan hot sauce - OMG!!!
Worst experience ever! Asked to be seated. Was clearly told it would be a 5 minute wait while they cleaned out a table. While I was outside waiting with my family... another gentleman came and asked to be seated. He was seated straight away on our promised table. I brought it up to the waitress who rudely dismissed me. Do not recommend!
Great Food. Ate Vegetarian Mofongo and Grilled Salmon. We had to wait a lot after we ordered but food was really amazing. Coffee with milk is the best. Will come back again if i have a chance
The staff was amazingly friendly!! They were so welcoming and the food was worth the wait! If you are in town an want an authentic Puerto Rican experience, you need to go to Cafe Puerto Rico! And just a heads up, their Pina Coladas trump Barrachina on any given day! ❤
Super welcoming staff, great selection for PR food and drinks.
I really enjoyed this place! Good location. Awesome appetizers! Menu was great, food was awesome that day and as leftovers the next day. Would recommend as a great place for drinks and snacks. Prices were super reasonable. Will eat here every time I am Im town. Staff was super friendly and helpful!
Saw the reviews on google and took my friends there. Patio area is perfect for people watching and getting into conversations with the people surrounding roaming around. Our server seemed a little annoyed but was knowledgeable. Food was good. We had Mufongo and had to say it was the most authentic. So you need to try it here, we had disgusting ones so far in other places. But here it was the best!
The Creole chicken was just a frozen piece of chicken thrown on the grill. I asked for Creole sauce or something to make it interesting. I got a bowl of tomato sauce. The sauce that comes with the appetizer, mango maybe? Was awesome. You basically sitter in the street which is goes at times while other times I was sitting next to a car or a truck. Overall good experience. Very nice and quick staff.
Recommended by tour guide as true authentic food. The mofondo was good. The chorizo w plantain fries was delicious (and I dont like sausage). Chicken tenders my son ordered not so great which was a bummer. Very nice people. Excellent fast service. I would go back/recommend.
A 5 minute walk from the cruise ship piers will bring you to this location that has live music and authentic PR food and appetizers like sorullos, alcapurias, and mofongo. Very nice location and atmosphere
Most of my family ate here and enjoyed the food selection. I had the liquor they were serving at the bar area.
Food was delicious and fresh. If you are ever in the area , you must try it
We had a blast, Mapeye was performing and the folklore music at its best.
This is one of our favorite places to go in Old San Juan. Excellent food and service, live music Saturday night
We havent been there in several years, since moving out of Old San Juan. When we got there we discovered things hadnt changed much, which is a good thing. Its full of customers, the "decor" remains almost unchanged, and the food is good at a reasonable price. Nothing fancy, but you feel at home. If youre not looking for fine dining, and arent try to impress in-laws or a date, this is a good place, conveniently located on Plaza Colon, a cross from the Tapia.
This place is horrible!!! Horrible food, service, & my boyfriends beer even had glass in it. Waitress was also rude & never checked on us. When told that there was glass broken into beer bottle & that my boyfriend had to spit glass out because he almost swallowed it, she simply said ok, grabbed beer, & walked away to get another "wrong" beer (she brought the wrong brand of beer both times). Waiteess & manager spent most of time catering to a group of people that they knew. Food was dry, bland, and we had to practically beg for salad dressing. I had to go inside to pay the bill because waitress never came back for it after at least 15 minutes. Mind you place only had three tables of customers and we were all outside. Then a $15 tax on a $55 bill? Do not visit!!! We gave them numerous chances to get it together but should have went elsewhere.
Food was great, despite the 1 month expired diet coke. They were very accommodating givin the circumstances. Server though, young lady didnt seem to enjoy her job and it showed in her face. She hardly spoke and looked like she was miserable.
Good rice & beans and good shrimp. There werent many in my plate, which wasnt ideal. Sangria is great, but might be a bit dangerous. :)
Its a great spot to stop and grab some coffee and a pastry. The espresso is excellent. The place a true PR gem.
Great service! Garlic shrimp was good, beans were a little bland for our liking.
Wonderful place to stop and grab a drink or quick bite while shopping in Old San Juan. Textbook definition of what a "cafe" should look and feel like. Food was authentic and tasty, drinks were made with fresh fruit. We didnt stay long but easily could have.
Just sat down. Super long wait. Restaurant is packed. One server. Hopefully the food is good as the reviews and worth the wait. Will update review at a later time.Update. The food was worth the wait. Although they ran out of what I originally wanted, I ended having the masitas de pernil mofongo and it was delicious. They were out of the skirt steak and shrimp mofongo. My wife had the chicken mofongo, she loved her dish so much she forgot to share some with me!!!The mojito and Pina colada we ordered were on point.Overall this is a great restaurant to have lunch when stopping in Old San Juan, just be prepared to wait or get there right when they open.
This is a must go if you are visiting Old San Juan. Sometimes I travel about 2 hours from the other side of the island only to eat here... so you can imagine the quality of this place. Good food, awesome environment and excellent service from the waiters.
Good food, nice staff, seems to be popular with the locals.
It was a great experience to have dinner in Cafe Puerto Rico. Awsome attention, delicious meal, very well presented, which got hot to the table. They have bilingual service and very good music. They also have outdoor tables. I fully recommend to have a meal in this place.
Awesome food! Had the steak mofongo with sweet and regular plantains. The mojitos were also strong and tasty. Service was excellent. Thank you Omar for a great experience!
I truly enjoyed my time at the Cafe Puerto Rico. The Waiter Jose immediately approaches us and offered us a baby chair for our daughter, gave us his favorite Mofongo and I must say... It was Amazing. The Best Mofongo I ever tasted. They refilled our drinks without us having to ask them. They were very attentive. If you ever visit, look for the Waiter Jose!
A small Quaint place, the staff is friendly, service was ok. I got Mahi Mahi in garlic sauce and the sauce was completely overwhelming. A very strong garlic flavor, but was cream based and not much other flavor. The fish itself, seasoned well, would have been fine. I would definitely not choose this place again.
Recommended by a local and it was delicious! We had the Chicken Mofungo with yucca, beans and rice. Also the white sangria and for dessert, we had the Tres Leche. Excellent! We would love to return one day!
Did not try the food. As a party of two we approached the waiter to be seated outside. While the waiter was explaining about possible rain, four locals approached the waiter and he seated them at the table he was offering us. He said that they were waiting for the table and walked away, but we were just next to the the restaurant for 30 minutes before we decided to go in and it was not busy and the four guests were not there. If you appreciate good service, avoid this place.
Food was pretty good. Service lacked a bit. No air conditioning and credit card machine didnt work.
Our first time to Puerto Rico and our driver recommended Cafe Puerto Rico. My wife and I had a late lunch of chicken mufango and chicken gumbo. Both were very good. The only problem was the chicken was still on the bone in the gumbo so that made it a little hard to eat. The "bread" that came with it was great! Just a basic small salad and a small scoop of white rice came with the mufango. We also tried the bread pudding and it was good too. We would go again if ever in the area.
Really good and big portions. Most people got their mofongoOur bachelorette party of 9 came in one Saturday night for dinner (yes, they can accommodate large groups). After an entire day of exploring Old San Juan, we were all tired and hungry. Luckily, Cafe Puerto Rico serves huge portions. Most people ordered their mofongo, but since I dont like plantains, I went with their shrimp in creole sauce. It comes with rice, and you also get to choose a side. I really wanted fries but I refrained myself and ordered a salad. V proud of myself, actually. The shrimp tasted pretty fresh and they give you a good amount. They warn you that the creole sauce is spicy but it just had a little bit of a kick, which was perfect for me. I dont like my food too spicy anyway. One thing that they can improve on - they dont serve alcoholic drinks. But I was there in April and looking at their online menu now (June), it looks like they do, so Im guessing they got this as feedback many, many times. The service was great, the portions were big, the prices were reasonable, so if I ever find myself back in San Juan, Ill be sure to find myself back in Cafe Puerto Rico as well!
Most amazing yuca mofongo relleno we had on the trip! We had it with churrasco. Also enjoyed the fact that they had a vegetable side, its been impossible to get non-salad cooked veggies in PR!We tried the plantain soup, pretty goodI think Ill make it myself at home. The tres leches cake was too sweet for me though.Overall amazing, great atmosphere and service too. Id come back.
I went here with the expectation of getting the best mofongo in Puerto Rico. It was very good but not the best. Though I loved the charming look of the place - they even served us beer while we waited in line for a table. Try the rice and beans - simple but wholesome.
Excellent service and nice puertorican vibe! Shrimp Mofongo was very good, and so was the 12 oz. skirt steak! My mom got the chicken gumbo, which was once again excellent, and the fries were good as well with not too much salt. Good prices too, recommend this place to anyone looking for a huge, delicious meal!
This is the main higlight of my trip. Most of Puerto Rico has left me with a bad taste in my mouth (and not just in a culinary respect). This great restaurant however, has saved me from thinking everything is bad. The food was phenomenal! I had the yellow rice with pork sausage and the tres leches leches cake for desert. Kudos to this restaurant and its friendly staff for a great evening!
