El Calafate, Santa Cruz Province, Argentina, El Calafate
Tranquil parkland offering sanctuary to many indigenous bird species, such as flamingos & swans.
This place is expensive for what it offers. I imagine it’s a lot nicer when the flowers are out in the spring, but we paid the entrance fee and ending up seeing losds of flamingos at the free beach at the edge of the sanctuary anyway. It was a sweet place, but not worth the entrance fee
Pretty; walked to Lake Argentina afterwards
Lovely place for a 1-2 hour walk. Great views of the site and lake. Entry ticket (foreigner): 1200 (1000 on Sundays). 500 extra to rent binoculars - definitely recommend doing this, makes the bird watching experience far more interesting (coming from someone who is not a big bird watcher..)
3 km trail around the lagunas, lots of birds to see if you take the time to sit and observe !
An amazing quite natural place. 1000 pesos for a foreigner, 500 for a resident. Great for a free day to just walk around.
A nice place to have a walk and make some bird watching. Is the day is windy I would not recommend it. On the other hand, it has a direct access to lake Argentino.
Its a great walk and you can sightsee a few magnificent birds
Beautiful, peaceful and educational place, with so many bird species to spot! A place where to discover your birdwatchers talents! :)
Somewhat expensive - $10 US for entry. Some nice views walking around, although the park is fairly small. We saw two flamingos from a very far distance and a few other interesting birds, but we felt we could have enjoyed the scenery just as much in some of the other areas in El Calafate that you dont have to pay for.
Trying to view the different birds was as fun as playing pokemon, my kiddo and I had a great time
not sure if it’s worth 500p pp but there are sooo many different kinds of birds around here. including flamingoes!
Beautiful, just beautiful. Gorgeous reserve where you can walk around absolutely at ease with life and marvel at the surrounding scenery (wildlife is hit or miss, I was fortunate enough to see some flamingos). The circuit takes you all the way to the Lago Argentino waterfront and, in total, takes around an hour and a half to complete if youre going slow. Try and make it there around sunset or a bit earlier to admire everything during that precious golden hour!
You have to pay for entrance (priceybut you can return for one week so worth it if you stay for a while. We did notice some people wait until its closed to come in for free as the entrance is not restricted or secured by any means after hours. It is about an hour walk and there is a great variety of birds to watch including flamingos. The Reserva is well maintained and its a very nice place to visit while in Calafate.
Pretty laguna near the El Calafate town! Roughly 15-20 minutes walk from Avenida del Libertador San Martin (the main road). You can do small trekking, which take 50 minutes to 1hour. It has an access to the Lago as well. Other good news, you can still use the same ticket to have a walk there (I think the ticket valid until the next 3-5 days). Also, I think they only receive cash. Always bring cash with you while travel in Argentina.
Beautiful natural place with an great work of conservation
The best place near the downtown El Calafate. It allows to use its ticket several times within a week.
The place is amazing, great to take a nice walk and get in touch with nature for a while, watching the birds fly around and everything. Be sure to wear sunscreen and some windbreaker!
It was exciting to see flamingos in the wild, although far away. There were many other ducks and birds there too. The walk around took 1.5 hours. Its pretty but its difficult to get nice photos there.
The entrance is 500 ARG. You can use the ticket more than one day. The parc is well mantained, but not huge. You must be a bird lover to spend more than one hour there. The flamingos are the highlight, but without binoculars you must be very lucky to see them close. Nonetheless one or even the highlight of the city of El Calafate.
Nice reserve for a short walk and to watch birds in the lagoon. It also offers access to the lakes beach and allows to get closer to the flamingos and swans.
Nice place where you walk among flamingo and other wild birds. Worth to do it when the weather is clear. They even provide good binoculars for a little extra money.
A nice place to walk around, especially if you like birds, particularly flamingos. Lots of information on boards and the path is well-maintained. You can get to Lago Argentino through a gate at the back or you can view it from a platform. A good place to bring children, as the walk is quite easy.
The lagoon is bordering on Lago Argentino, and in order to see the birds up close, you gotta pay an entree fee to access the 2km round walk. We stayed outside, at the entry is a wall and the sun shone on it so it was nicely warm to sit down, and we had great views of the lake as well - lots of flamingos! If you want a better view, bring binoculars or your camera.
500 pesos for a week! Good deal that I wish I knew before hand. I bet a bird lover would love this little but vibrant bird habitat. I could see little birds and pink flamingos. Theres a door that takes you close to Pago Argentino for nice shots to the mountain. Better when isnt windy. :)
Total coincidence we found this place, what a treat. Lovely walk and great photo ops!
A wonderful place to relax and see some of the local wildlife, including dozens of flamingos. We especially enjoyed the access to the beaches of Lago Argentina.
Off the beaten track, less well known than the national park, but world - class bird watching. Save a few hours for a bit of quiet time in this little enclave. Theyll give you a checklist of most of the common birds, and you can rent binoculars.
Lovely walk and tourist free reserve. Plenty of birds to watch. Not expensive at all.
Great experience ! I walked along a marked trail, every 300m you have a view point. You can rent binoculars to watch births
You can go with kids. It is a lovely walk around watching birds and ducks also many regional plants. Thete is a fee. There is a tolitte. There is a guide too.
It is ok, but not worth 350 pesos. A few areas not accessible due to flooding. They have a blind with a little terrace to observe flamingos, but could not access. Flamingos very far.
An okay place if you are not a bird watcher. I think, if you have enough knowledge and patience, you can spot some rare birds here. However, for a random traveler (as myselfthere is not too much to do there: it is a nice walk, definitely, and you can see flamingos from rather far away. Overall it is not a life changing experience, but still worth a visit if you have a spare few hours in town!
Wonderful and beautiful place. Its really worth it if you borrow binoculars from them or bring your own because otherwise you miss a lot. You also need some patience but its worth it. We saw many different types of birds and even managed to spot a gray fox!
Good sites and the beach is decent in this area but didnt see that much wildlife. My friends and I walked through in March, and we saw a few flamingoes way in the distance which is nice. Other than that just a few ducks here and there. The walk was enjoyable with the views.
350 pesos for 2500 meter hike is much to expensive. you could not see any bird in this small area you did not also see outside. there was no flamingo in there, even so there are big pictures of them at the entrance.
Beautiful spot for a walk and a great opportunity to learn about the many birds that breed here. If you want to see flamingos and other birds much better, do yourself a favour and hire the binoculars for only $150 pesos. Highly recommended.
This is a beautiful area loaded with birds and plant life around 2 lagoons by the lake. We were told it would take about an hour to see the whole place but we spent at least 2 hours there. Really enjoyed this spot.
Little natural reserve featuring flamingos and several other bird species. Includes access to the shores of Lago Argentinos. The entrance fee is AR $300 for adults (November 2018). Its about a 3k loop that takes appr. an hour depending how many picture breaks you take. The park is well kept. It was very windy and there are very few shelters along the way. The rangers at the entrance seemed somewhat disinterested. If you have some time to kill before taking the bus and like flamingos, I would go for it. Otherwise, you could skip it.
Its really nice place. We met a lot of different birds. Definitely worth it.
Feb2018. The colours were awesome. Enjoyed the walk.
Wonderful place for bird watching.Just a shame that sometimes the wild dogs intrude the protected area and disturb the birds.
Peaceful place for birdwatching and chilling. Late summer sees the water level rise preventing you from making a full circuit of the lagoon or reaching the hides.
Recomended for viewing birds
One of the few sights to see within walking distance of the center of town, probably about a fifteen minute walk. While the lagoon is quite beautiful, I dont think its really worth the 200 pesos to enter. Theres not much information listed around the reserve and the whole walk takes probably about an hour.
10$ for some great bird watching. Best time is on a sunny day about 18 — 1900 hrs when sun is low. Go backwards on the patch to have the sin behind u. Dont litter, stay on the path. Watch out for the hawks, they fly low to protect the young.
beautiful, but costs 200 pesos just to walk around the lake... so we just sat down by the road and enjoyed the view. If you go on Sunday its cheaper.
A very reasonable entry fee for a great little nature reserve. You can see many birds and gave great views across reserve abd lago argentino.
Here you can see a lot of birds and have a great view of Argentino lake
First of all, say that this place felt like the biggest mistake of our Calafate visit. A$150 pp very badly spent.Even more so, when we realised that we could have walk outsode the fence eastwards to where you can reach the public entry of the beach, then backtrack westwards on the beach to wjere the Reserve boundry fence has 2 openings giving access to it. You can this way walk in&out the place without needing a ticket, and still see all you want. Just be a little cheeky.About the place:Even though they say 200 species can be seen in the place, youll be lucky to see 10. The place is rather dull, which is expected, as reserves are, but all species it msy hold, are well hidden away from visitors, even flamingos were so far away out to the lake you would have struggled with a potent lens. And beach strallers saw them all the same as us without needing a ticket too. Lame.
A lovely walk around the laguna! Great view and got to see lots of birds up close. Tip: do rent a pair of binoculars and walk out of the side entrances to get a better view of the flamingos!
