Regal Chinese Restaurant - Chinese restaurant in Wellington, New Zealand
Very disappointed with the service food. We would give it 0 stars if we could. We went here for yum cha and waited 40mins for the food to come around only to be offered salads and sashimi. When we asked the staff why they kept taking food to the upstairs table, they told us we weren’t priority. The food was oily and we only got offered dim sums near the end. They never came around to refill our tea either and when we asked, they said they had run out of hot water. Really disorganized and rude.
Flavourful, authentic Cantonese yum cha.
The Green beens and barbeque pork were outstanding!
Great food . Love the yum cha !
great service, great food.. good for value
Our family had a feast of Yummy Yum Cha... everyone got to choose their favourites, there was plenty to share for all. My favourites were the vegetarian Rice Rolls, Prawn Dumplings, Beef Tendons, and Rice wrapped in leaves. Fabulous food feast, family, fun outing, cheers 😍
Very busy on mothers day. Not very good service
Great food and atmosphere, comprehensive menu and great service. Would highly recommend. Good views over Courtenay Place from window tables.
Had family dinner there. Worst dinner ever. The steam rice was not fresh . It was rice used for fried rice but put in the microwave to heat up. It was not fluffy and soft like freshly cooked rice. The crispy skin roast pork was not crispy skin. Again it was not fresh. It was old roast pork reheated on the microwave. Also, it was far too salty. Couldnt eat any of it. The roast pork was dry not juicy like it was freshly roasted. The sweet and sour pork was chewy. The crispy chicken was too dry and over done. Left it in the fryer for too long perhaps. All in all it was an unenjoyable dinner. The only thing good was the tea, and even that it was only warm , not hot as tea should be.
Regal was busy, but we got a room all to ourselves. We just picked from the fresh, hot baskets that came by constantly. Black vinegar on the table!
Delicious food and good service order your own dishes instead of never ending yum chow pre covid
Excellent service, warm and friendly people.Catered to our large group at short notice.Thank you 😊
Flatmates brought me here! Loved it. A lot of variety and great service.
Great food and lots of variety to choose from at dinner time. Its a family favourite nowadays.
Good food. Was busy when we were here on a Sunday. By the way, be careful of any food allergies👌
We like the Regal for yum cha. Even when on a diet the prawn and chive dumplings are a tasty option with some choy sum
Pretty good Cantoness foods
Zero stars this time and big disappointment. We waited with children 1.5 h until some food was served and then they brought one main dish and nothing else with it from what we ordered..a soup in smaller size then ordered came after the main, again still none if the other dishes with it.We asked what happened, no answer most likely due to language barrier I feel but hey that just wasnt good.I think you guys have over booked the restaurant that evening and just couldnt manage. We have been in various times and always really enjoyed it like five stars but this time was zero...
Been here before, popular place, but good is very average.Went for yum cha, restaurant full, we waited a long time for food as they kept coming with the same dishes... After 1 hour I had only had 2 dumplings... No crispy pork, no chicken wings, no pan fried dumplings, we had to ask for a menu to get food as they stopped coming out with new dishes. The crispy pork didnt taste very nice and wasnt juicy.Very average overall, everywhere else does yum cha better than this place.
The food was great! My boyfriend and I ordered 2 courses Peking duck and two small soups. They were really tasty. It’s a shame that we couldn’t finish all everything as there were so much to eat. The portions would be perfect for 3 people.
The service was extremely slow we were left waiting for ages between dishes to the point of where our rice was cold and we had to ask for it to be reheated. The resturant wasnt busy at the time. Not Impressed
Underwhelming experience. We ordered prawns dumplings (our usual yumchaand all of us thought it was off. I told the manager and he didnt seem concerned. He gave a laughable discount of $1 🙄. We paid the bill, saved our appetite and promptly walked out from there to Majestic next door and enjoyed great yumcha there.
There was a language barrier and we found some of the wait staff were not understandable. I went with a larger group and was disappointed. For those who prefer fried wantons spring rolls and chicken wings (my grandchildrenthese were not brought to the table in usual yum char fashion. So we decided to order off the menu. 1 hour later with hungry upset grandchildren these had still not been brought to the table so we left and took them else where. It was to be a family christmas but we were disappointed. If you want to get a menu on arrival and order off that then it may possibly be a more enjoyable experience. Dont leave it until you find its not being brought out as it will spoil your dining experience.
Please excuse me if my rating in wrong but I came for the yum cha experience. I had previously been booked to dragon but as they wouldnt allow us the yum cha experience as we were a table of 2 I searched for a place who could cater to what we were wanting. The restraunt was clean and the waitress delightful with excellent customer serviceHowever, our order was written on a peice of paper I was under the impression food was brought around to your table and you chose what you wanted. Hence yum cha???We ordered pork buns which were the best Id hadChicken wings cooked perfectly with crunchy coating.Pork spare ribs which had almost no meat ???Marinated chicken piece which contained gristle and bone in each piece which was very off putting. Am unsure if this was meant to be like this? Perhaps an authentic dish?Chicken and mushroom wrap I think it was wrapped I tofu also contained bones similar to a chicken neck. As I was not expecting this once again off putting.Sticky rice was average.Dumplings were very large and not what Im use to the meat was dry and the dumpling sack very heavy and unappealingSweet sponge was delightful and mango pudding delish however I was expecting more variety or custard and coconut buns and coconut ice etc.The food had some amazing flavors however some did not and biting into a piece of meat containing bone is very off putting. Not an experience I would like to have again anytime soon.
Been a while since I had yum cha at the Regal. Not as good as previous. Food lukewarm at best. Gone pricey.
We did our usual takeaway after months. We always get the chicken and eggplant hot pot with salted fish! Maybe they have a new chef because it was nothing like we usually order! Dry chewy eggplant and chicken with barely any sauce. Very underwhelming!
Yum cha, dimsum galore! Large selection of dumplings. Hakau, siumay, steamed bun, you name it, they have it. I also tried their peking duck, mouth watering crispy duck skin yuuuum!!!
We went for Yum Cha on Friday noon, the restaurant was half full which suited us very well because we needed a quiet place to chat.We were satisfied with the large variety of Dim Sum served. These were mostly of large serving sizes.Overall, it was a great place for Yum Cha on a weekday. Will definitely return.
Understaffed, so their staff are usually quite stressed. Theres a sparrow that knows how to fly into the restaurant through open windows in the main area and in their private function rooms. On Chinese New Year Eve the sparrow ate lots of left over food on vacated tables that hadnt been cleared away yet. Those tables were cleared about 10-30min later. Due to their staffing issues, mistakes with orders are made, and their staff dont know to say "How can I help?" instead of "what do you want?". Their food is decent though.
Took over 2 hours to be served a simple takeaway standard set menu. To be frank going to a Chinese takeaway is of a higher standard. Had to ask multiple times when the food is coming and each time the management didn’t seem to care. Plenty of other Chinese restaurants in Wellington who will actually value your custom.
Great place for Yum Cha. Arrive early theres often a queue. Beware there is no wheel chair access as far as I can tell - its upstairs.
Had yum char. Havent been there in years, looks like its changed ownership. Nothing objectionable, food was average, service was average, the manager/owner was average, seemed fairly disinterested, no smile nor thank you at checkout. We handed back a tray of food which was insect-contaminated, could have been a public health matter, the waiter took it away and came back with a replacement, but the least I had expected was an apology from the owner/manager, not so. Perhaps because we didnt create a scene. Ok at a pinch but there are alternative places in town for yum char.
We had a good time with family and friends at Regal. So many options to choose, and most of them are yummy. Very busy at the weekend. We love it.
No seating areas in upper deck for parties of 3.Seat covers were dirty, table was not wiped down properly.Yumcha was relatively good for Wellington standards but price was a bit higher than average 27/pp
Great food. Love their yum cha highly recommended.
Food is good, wait is quite long and when we get seated, there is no proper cutleries set up. We raise the issue to staff, but always have miscommunication and it only came when we are almost done (45mins)😏😏😏 overall staff is still helpful
Sad to say their yum cha was not as good as some other places and this was in the weekend*. Im sure that improving quality rather than offering freebies will drive more business their way especially given the amount of competition nearby. When it comes to marketing though they are pretty savvy!YC is different in the wkdays from the wkends (in NZso you may need to adjust your expectations according to the timing of your visit.*In general, while its understandable that during the weekdays if you order yum cha you would most likely be served pre-frozen dishes (in NZ because you dont have the numbers), one would expect freshly-prepared and freshly-steamed dishes in the weekends (when crowds come out to brunchbut that may not be the case if the restaurant has lower turnover (new or less popular). So if you dont see trolleys of steaming dishes on offer in the weekends but have to wait for the pre-frozen stuff to be steamed or worse (microwavedthen youll have a fair idea why. Of course the best way to find out is to taste the dishes...
Great place for authentic Chinese food and social dining of all sorts. The staff are lovely and friendly, the food is delicious and the portions are generous.I definitely recommend it for getting together with family or friends.
Went for yum cha, this experience was terrible. Food was cold and tasteless and has seriously gone downhill...i could hear the microwave being overworked, surely most yum char dishes are steamed properly....but I could only assume. I found it weird that we had to write down what we wanted on a sheet of paper, this is not the yum char experience I usually enjoy. It adds to the experience when the variety of food is wheeled around on the carts for the diner to see.....this certainly reflects the fact that they were not busy at all for a Wednesday lunchtime only 3 other tables of diners. To refresh our palette and not have this place ruin our love of Chinese food forever we headed directly to a Tory street establishment to get our fix on yum char delights. Regal needs to seriously up there game, we will not be back.
Love the improvements made by the new owners! The food is now not overly salty which is great! Especially the absolutely delicious roast duck! Nice complementary soup and fruit/sweet after meal. Definitely recommend.
We actually taste tasted slot of foods that dayTurnip cake was cold in the middleBeef tendon was chewyFried squid rubberyWhen.we asked if its just fried tofu they said yes but it was some type of meat ON tofu!Used to love Regal, but not anymore..😔
Absolutely delicious Yum Cha. There were 11 of us and were completely full for $21 each. Make sure you get the dessert with macha powder on top.
My favourite yum cha. I like it (Im euroand my Malaysian friends also like it. We bring our toddler along every time and it seems to be relatively child friendly.
Meal was amazing but most expensive Yum Cha l have EVER had at $36 per person. Queried price , still believe it was miss added. Never paid more than $22 , and ate normal number of servings. Disappointed with price but great service and meal.
Definitely worth it!! The dumplings were full of flavor with delicate dumpling skin. The combination was so delicious. Chicken feet were the best! They literally melted in your mouth. Egg tart is average but absolutely fixed my craving for sweets. Solid 5 star. ;)
I have been here many times for lunch. Yum Cha is one of the best in town. If possible, try to come as early as 11:00 am or call for reservation. otherwise you have to wait for your turn in a long queue.
Was disappointed coming here. While the food was edible, the food choice was lacking (50% seafood), the meat we did get was gristly, and the atmosphere chaotic. Despite coming at prime Yum-Cha time, we waited 10 minutes before being seated, and another 10 for the food to begin coming around.Complimentary tea was nice at least.
Great place with great food, came here for a friend’s wedding reception and the service was friendly and attentive. Make sure you try the fish soup and the Peking duck, both really tasty dishes. This place is a real hidden gem and we will be back
Good food & service with reasonable price. We always like to eat there.
The atmosphere was great, most of the food was great as well. Only one dish was slightly under cooked while one was cook and very oily. Those two factors slightly detracted from the overall quality but still deserved a 5 star rating! The desserts of sesame seed balls and red bean buns were perfect!
