Montevideostraat 3, 2000 Antwerpen, Belgium, Wuustwezel
Museum exhibition based on the 3 million who emigrated to America using this historic shipping line.
The best museum in Antwerp! It made history come to life by telling the stories of all the different types of people who travelled via the Red Star Line, as well as a small exhibit on modern stories of immigration. Highly recommend!
Everyone comes from s omewhere, and this museum celebrates the concept that human nature is about change, new places, and new experiences
Nice historical place, history is shown in very modern way, which is a huge advantage.
Really interesting museum. There are lot of stories and memories of what lived the people who tried to find a new life away from home.Highly recommended. The museum is free with the city card. You can place you backpack in a security box for free (to close it you need a 1€ coin or you can ask for a box coin at the ticket office)
The museum is very interactive, immersing you into the story of immigrants from all over the world. This museum retteld the stories of immigrants and procedures of the Red Star Lines. I really loved it.
Interesting story, I didn’t know that Antwerp was such an important port for trans-atlantic travel. Tidy, well equiped and everything is available in English.
Very fun and informative museum. We took a guide which was totally worth it. If you want to climb the tower you should be prepared to go up a lot of steps or to take the elevator. The museum also wasnt crowded at all which was very nice.
As an immigrant, the museum is very relatable to me. A lot of stories about migration and Red Star Line itself.
Awesome, It gives to the visitor a real insight to past and contemporary history of migration in Antwerp. Worths a try!
I had the most amazing explore around this fantastic museum! It was a very moving experience and we are so glad we went during our time in Antwerp!
Nice museum, strong story. Excelent view tower.
Excellent museum and very interesting to hear the stories
A must see in Antwerp. Very nice museum about the Red Star line from Antwerp to New York.
Came to the city and this museum was on the top of my list. Did definitely not disappoint! I loved it and will recommend it to anyone who is interested in the topic. I have also been to Ellis Island and to see the other side, and so many more stories. Really loved it. I was there around 14:30h and was just about done at 17h when the museum closed. I took my time, read everything and had to rush a bit through the last two rooms. Which was a shame. So I think illness back one day 😊
One of the top 5 museums I have visited. It is not only beautifully designed, content as well appears thought through. One the one hand you are being given the broader picture about European emigration to the US from roughly 1850 to 1950. There are numerous individual stories then to illustrate and give insight. Captivating and enriching, even our 10 and 12 year old children were fascinated and we spent two hours in it, not regretting a minute of it.
Must see for history and/or genealogy buffs
Honestly, I can’t give a full review. I arrived in the half-hour before the museum closed and couldn’t get any tickets to the paid exhibition. But there’s a free lift ride up to the top of the giant ship hull. I could look out into the horizon, much like MAS. This experience is complimented with ground arrows pointing towards different large cities.
Worth a one time visit. The of exodus from Europe to America explained in great detail. The entrance fee is a bit high though. Approximately one hour required for the complete experience.
Interesting museum about a company that facilitated mass emigration to the USA and Canada in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Good historical information, mainly through reading wall panels. Small, unobtrusive gift shop by the entrance, not herded through it and given the hard sell.
Unique in its kind..... housing a very special surprise namely handwritten letters from Albert Einstein.
very interesting museum! theres a route through the museum you can easily follow, with a lot of historical information on not only the red star line, but also the history of migration! the (temporary?exhibition about refugees was worth the extra 2€, it was done so beautifully and showed so much respect for the people they interviewed. absolutely recommend visiting!
Really impressive museum. They put in an effort to bring history to the people. Different types of presentation, lots of information, and an amazing collection. It exceeded my expectations.
Mostly this a read the wall kind of museum with few artifacts or interactive exhibits. You can access the archives, but its time consuming. The modern migration exhibit was moving and you are on the actual location. Modest gift shop, cafe was closed
If u want to know more about the history of antwerp you definitely must visit this place. Worth it
This is a great museum documenting emigration from Europe to North America. If your family came in through Ellis Island, this is a must visit.
Was really informative and plenty of room to walk around and see things as well. The staff was super super friendly. I highly recommend especially if youre from North America.
Very good museum, its my fourth time I see it. Dont miss the terrace, you can see the giant dock cranes from above. No need to book in advance, I just bought the ticket at the entrance.
Great museum and very informative. It’s a shame that this historical building was basically stripped down and modernized on the interior. I suggest adding replicas of things that existed there before, especially on the first floor where it goes through the history of immigration. Seems like a filler room like they didn’t know what to do with the space. Also it was kind of sad seeing the pictures of the hallway leading to the medical examination room, and comparing to how it is now, blocked up with walls for the exhibit. It would be better to try and be historically accurate to the layout of the building, instead of closing rooms off. Also would have been cool if instead of drawing lines on the ground, they had rebuilt the shower and changing room areas for people to see, and maybe add cool information inside the stalls. Also, at the end of the exhibit, it would be cool to have an interactive experience where you can look up a family member’s name that you know immigrated to North America, and see if their name shows up on any former passenger lists. I assume these names are on file somewhere? Washington DC does something similar where you can look up relatives that fought in WW2. Really added to the experience.
Amazing, great food, great service!! A must if you go to the musuem
If this is your maiden voyage to this type of museum you wont be disappointed. This museum about the red star line and the their boat trips around the world brings you stories, testimonies and art about these interesting and often dangerous voyages. The touch screens can be operated with disinfected touch pens, given to you at the entrance. This guarantees a pleasant visit, even during these strange times. There are also lockers available, but because of the covid crisis the cafetaria is not open.
Very interesting museum which places the Red Star Line company within the context of human migration throughout the different eras of mankind.
Informative and enjoyable. A must visit museum in the city for rich history. Its free entrance for residents of Antwerpen. Make your place reserve via website before you plan to visit, free locker available for your luggage security. All covid-19 precautions taken care well.
Important museum to see and experience about immigrants from Europe try to begin life in United States a decade ago..all sadness and happiness.. Internarional world should know it!
Amazing museum. It is a must-see for everyone who stays more than two nights in Antwerp.
Nice museum with reflections on migration and humans wish to a new better world in the past and in the present with food for thought on the future. Happy to have had some real & good food & drinks at the Upper deck café at museum venue.
This museum has had a considerable amount of effort put into it. Expect to spend at least two hours here if your interested in hearing lots of migration stories!
This was such a well done museum! It was amazing to see how the process was especially when I had seen the Ellis Island museum before this. Allow 1-2 hours depending on how much you like reading and listening to the stories of immigrants coming to US. Highly recommend.
Completely worth it. A must see on any visit to Antwerp. Easy to understand and paints a clear picture of the migration story and the role the red star line played. Very informative and staff can answer any questions you nay have. Easy to reach by e scooter, bike or foot from Antwerp Central.💯 Recommend
Excellent museum you need to allow plenty of time as there is so much to see and read. The view from the panoramic roof is spectacular.
A stunningly well layed out and interesting museum. I tells the history of the shipping line and the journey of the immigrants from all over Europe who made their way to Antwerp before embarking to the new world. We spent over two hours looking around and agreed that there was still enough to warrant another visit. Do not miss the view of the docks from the viewing platform.
Amazing museum, immersive experience, great theme and a view point on the top
I thought this museum would just be another boring ship museum until my AirBnb host told me more about it. It focuses on immigration, especially that of the time period when Europeans would sail to North America. It goes into detail on the steps each person had to take has artifacts from emmigrants that travelled by ship (including Albert Einstein). I loved it
Pretty amazing museum - details the immigration experience from the point of view of leaving Europe to get to the US (and even talks to Ellis Island in the US). At the end there are computers at which you can try and track your familys path to the US.
This museum is awesome, I totally recommend everyone to visit it! There is a lot of history regarding migration of people from Europe TO America and all the paths which they needed to take in order to get there.
Great museum, well organized exhibitions. Our tour guide was super friendly and helpful with a lot interesting facts. I will bring friends here when they come visit me in Antwerp!
Absolutely fantastic museum. English reading guide provided. There is also quite a bit of the exhibits in English. Tells the story of how emigration from Europe to the West occurred through Antwerp.
Amazing rendition of human migration, easily heal of the United States could trace their roots to someone that left with Red Star to cross the Atlantic and grey to the new world. Really well cured with personal stories that touch even the coldest of souls. If you visit Sheep you can not miss this jewel.
Exceptional museum at all fronts: design, location, pricing. Especially the stories told by the people who went on the red star line are fascinating, and are interwoven in the different parts of the ships journey, from the train ride to the boarding towards the final destination. The beginning gives an open and neutral view on migration throughout the ages. Only the ending of the museum felt a little bit odd, some parts about the current state of antwerp could easily have been part of the MAS nextdoors)... But overall an astonishing museum!
Probably the most impressive museum Ive ever visited so far. It has changed my view on the city of Antwerp and Belgium completely! A must-visit place in Antwerp for sure.
I liked this museum very much, it was an emotional journey of people searching for a better world and going through the exhibition you are able to walk in their shoes for a bit... Making parallels with the current migrant crisis from the Middle East is unavoidable... Highly recommendable!
