The Red Lion pre covid was a great pub to visit for lunch or an evening meal. Food was always excellent and the beer good. Sadly the Pub is no longer a reliable place to drop in on - and if you do manage actually to find it open, the chances are they will turn you away.I have visited twice in the last few months: the first time a Thursday evening around 8pm. It was closed. The second time today a Saturday lunchtime at 1pm. The bar had a few people but there were many empty seats and tables. Asked for the lunch menu but only to be told - no food as we are "chopped out (whatever that meant). No apology or explaination. I will not waste my time and petrol again, especially as there are many other establishments serving beer and food in the area that do nee the custom.
We dined here for Sunday dinner to break up a trip back to London from Norwich and to shelter from an epic thunderstorm.Delicious food, I had an absolutely stonking Sunday Roast that I could not fault, and kids were delightedly with their menus of the Red Lion Cubs menu.Service was superb. Will definitely come back when back in this neck of the woods. Thank you.
Lovely old fashioned pub with comfortable seating and a lovely light dining area. All the meals were excellent quality across both menus. Staff were polite and friendly. Good selection of beers and lagers. Ideal for small or large groups. Large carpark with plenty of spaces, plus parking on the main road.
Came here for a Sunday roast to celebrate my mums birthday. Not impressed at all to be honest. We found the service to be quite unattentive with one member of staff in particular being blatantly annoyed when we asked to move tables away from the open door as we had a young baby. The food was also very underwhelming - not sure how you can really go wrong with a roast but the Yorkshires and meat were both dry and the desserts left a lot to be desired.Sadly wont be returning.
Good food and pretty location. Good service and pretty garden.
Would recommend any one travelling to Stansted or North London as we were. Our room was airy spacious and well appointed. We had a very pleasant meal too and breakfast was good too.
Lovely pub in a beautiful village. Plenty of parking and a nice outside space with plenty of tables that are not on top of each other. The staff are a pleasure and nothing was to much trouble. The food was good very good not over fussy but presented well. Good choice on the menu and will be back soon.
This has been a great pub with a very good restaurant for many years. This evening, for the first time, we tried a takeaway supper. Everything worked as it should from booking to collection - ready on time and hot. Excellent food and decent sized too. Thank you.
Arrived on a sunny Saturday afternoon. The bar was very quiet. Decent selection of beers and a lovely garden. We had dinner from the restaurant and the food was excellent. We stayed the night, rooms were good size and clean. There was a good choice for breakfast, eggs royal were excellent. The staff and service was very good.
The staff is excellent, but can be overwhelmed if lots of walkins show up. Location is very pretty, and great for a weekend getaway but you will need a way to the next town or a way to Cambridge if you fancy a meal on Mon or Tues (pub is closed). The evening meals at the pub are all very good (as had 5 meals here and all were top notch).
Good selection of real ales from the region. Lovely location with bags of charm. Highly recommended.
We only went for food which was mediocre. The highlight was the server, he was wonderful, thank you.
Great place to stay. Nice pub with historic flair. Many thanks for the great service, good meal and beer!Nice and homely pub with historic flair.
Very pleasant staff, great food, good service, good accommodation
A wonderful old pub, well run and organised. Sadly we were there for a funeral wake, but the property was very uplifting. The food was an organised buffet and well organised.
Good food, good beer, good environment
We went to the pub and enjoyed some drinks. The sandwich we ordered that day was a bit dry but it was a nice pub in general.
Food was amazing, staff were lovely, and the building itself was beautiful!
Went to meet up with my best friend and family before going to her Fathers memorial at the local cemetary. Then returned after the memorial to pay respects with family/friends. It was wonderfully warm (nice fire burning). Staff so friendly and considering there were about 30 plus people suddenly arriving they dealt very swiftly and professionally. I heard the food was a little expensive but I did not eat there. I do not mind paying a bit extra if food is good quality and well cooked. Very comfy pub. Just watch the steps and levels as there are a few to stumble if not looking down. Toilets exceptionally clean and nicely decorated. Would go again with friends/family to try food.
Christmas lunch menu was tasty, but portions were very small, left a bit hungry after 3 courses :(
I very much like The Red Lion and have visited it on many previous occasions. It is a comfortable and cosy pub and eating there is usually a pleasure. I gave it 3 stars this time as the meal we ordered (fish & chipswas quite overcooked. I mentioned it to the waitress as we left and she said that shed pass my comments to the chef. It certainly wont stop me visiting The Red Lion and I hope for a better result next time.
Had booked a day at nearby Duxford air museum and wanted to have lunch locally. Researched several placed locally and booked the Red Lion. Ambiance, welcome, decor all of the highest order. Food was delicious. A friend and i started with tempura prawns, salad and a dipping sauce, followed by a sublime canon of lamb for myself ,and a ribeye steak for my friend. The choice from the menu was excellent. I have already booked for the end of this month.
Fabulous food. The staff were brilliant....very understanding of a slight hitch and so kind. Thank you.
Very peicfull location good pub very good breakfast evening food served 6:00 to 8:00 Sunday evening roast was the best Ive had for a long time
Lovely garden - just had sandwiches with a side of chips. Great chips but the day-old sourdough bread of the sandwiches was hard work. Good service.
Really good food service was a little slow but did not spoil a very nice lunch outside
Peas with fish & chips were completely cold and had mint mixed into them despite it not saying it on the menu. The pie we had was served on a plate that was revealed to be broken once the food was half eaten.No-one checked back, I told the waitress of the issues and just said “oh” in a flat tone and handed me the bill!Poorly maintained premises, quite run down and certainly not as per the photos! incompetent staff and no management. The fish and pie were good but this place is one to avoid!
Had a very nice Sunday lunch, couldnt fault the meal or the service. Staff friendly would go again.
Sorry Red Lion, but Sunday lunch wasnt up to much. The hot smoked salmon starter was dry, chewy and very salty. Meat in the main course (lambwas fine but the veg were mushy and indistinguishable, the roast potatoes were dried out and tasteless, the Yorkshire pud likewise. Everything had been too long 8n the oven or too long kept warm. Our dessert of Eton Mess had far too much cream and very little fruit or meringue. Altogether disappointing.
We had a family get together last Saturday (17/4/21to celebrate our sons 50th birthday. What a wonderful visit, fantastic food very friendly and attentive staff nothing was too much trouble. Thank you for a fantastic experience
Nice pub with a decent beer selection. The food is interesting and very tasty. The staff are friendly. I hope that covid doesnt affect it too badly.
Due to Covid 19 the pub was shut. I was in the area on business and needed accommodation. Although everything was shut, they put me in a courtyard room and gave me a limited breakfast. More than I expected and very welcome. Many thanks.
Good English well cooked food with some nice added extras if you want. Could not fault it. Very quiet they deserve to be busy.
Very nice food. Friendly staff. Ample parking. Well priced.2nd time ive been here. This time for a beef roast dinnerThe cauliflower cheese is 2nd to none!Roasties are very crispyIts overall a 10/10
Visited in September, I chose the beer battered cod with chips from the lunch time menu. The fish was absolutely delicious, however the chips that accompanied looked more like a rushed afterthought. The wine that I prefer wasnt available here, so the staff member suggested another, & after having to change the initial dirty glass for another, he made a good recommendation. I would be very happy to return to The Red Lion, all the staff were very pleasant.
Absolutely fantastic food! Would really recommend it. Excellent staff and a pleasant atmosphere. A country village pub at its best.
stunning historic looking building ..lovely outside spaces ..the gentleman that served us was polite and great service ..inside was great felt in keeping with outside but had all a variety to match a larger style pub ..definitely reccomend to anyone
On a business trip to the Sanger Institute my coworkers and I stopped by here. The wait staff treated us incredibly well.We were arriving late and made a special request of them to serve us past the time their kitchen closes. They were able to cook the food prior to the kitchen closing, and kept our meals warm till we arrived. The food was great, and the beer was perfect. If I ever go back to Hinxton I plan to visit the Red Lion Inn.
Quaint pub in beautiful setting. Warm open fires and friendly staff. Couple of local ales, Adnams Woodfordes and Aspels. Open fires and festive feel makes it a must for lunch or dinner on a cold day.
Very nice place located in the lovely village of Hinxton. Very busy though, youll need to book for Sunday lunch, so we had coffee, a very good one. The place seemed very popular and people were enjoying their meal
Nikki and Dan were fantastic and great at their job. Very professional and I had a good experience. I recommend anyone going by the red Lion at whittlesford park to go in and get the great service you deserve for your money. Dont go anywhere else. Seriously! :)
Good beer and sercice was excellent. Not great food. Really greasy and undercooked scallops. Been coming for a while but going downhill. Hate to say it.
Excellent service, and a very good atmosphere on the night I was there. Good selection of ale and decent wine. Food was well executed but my main of seabass and samphire was very salty. Please tell the chef if you’re serving fish with samphire you don’t need to add large dashes of salt over the rest of the food. My desert was excellent. Very good choice if you’re in the area.
My daughter and myself had afternoon tea it was the best we have had. Sandwiches and cakes were the perfect size and very delicious. The staff were more than helpful and friendly. We will definitely go back.
Nice beer but pub was cold and lacked atmosphere. Suspect that it has become a satellite of the nearby Sanger Institute campus. A real fire would have been a nice touch and the heat very welcome.Alex, thank you for your reply. I hope to return soon!
Haha. My bike got a puncture so that I had to do a roadside repair just opposite the Red Lion, and now Google keeps pestering me for a review! Sadly they didnt bring me a free cup of coffee to cheer me up and send me on my way, but Ive stopped here many a weekend for a swift pint as I pass by on the bike and totally love this spot, so 5 stars anyway!
The Red Lion Inn has a rustic interior which makes it a charming place for lunch. The service is excellent and the food good. My only gripe is the cost. Its a little over my budget, perhaps geared towards senior academics at the Sanger rather than my assistant paycheck.
Quaint pub in cute village. Stopped off here while cycling to avoid the rain. Menu looked good but couldnt try it as the kitchen was closed. Had a good glass of wine because the beer selection was a little limited (lager and a few mainstream ales).
Traveling from the states. The bar keep let me try beers until I found one I liked. Outside seating available, for those occasions when outside seating would be desirable. There is a covered area for shade or shelter. The grounds are beautiful. The pub is everything a pub should be. Delightful, all around.
Fantastic food, lovely atmosphere and decoration. The place was packed with Christmas lunch groups but the service didnt slow down at all and the staff made sure we were well looked after. Thank you for a great experience.
