Red Cliffs National Conservation Area - National reserve in Saint George, United States
Pretty red rock. This time there wasn’t any water. It was still a fun and beautiful hike.
Dinosaur tracks, ancestral pueblonean ruins, a restored pioneer home, ancient petroglyphs, a slot canyon in Navajo sandstone with waterfalls, an abandoned silver mine claim and great hiking and mountain biking trails. There is also a campground and shaded picnic area with potable water.
Phenomenal little hike with great views. Folks of all ages were out enjoying it. Wouldnt call it easy if you have mobility concerns as theres a little climbing and rocks to traverse. Lots of shady places to rest.
This is one of the best trails near St. George. The red rocks and the natural formations amaze me.This trailhead is located some 2 miles from the highway. There’s parking lot at the trailhead. There are limited parking lots available at the trailhead. You’re supposed to Self pay $5 in the Dropbox at the parking spot. Also, there is RV and tent camping ⛺️ option available near the trailhead.People enjoy hiking there during winter and early summer. The canyons run deep as long as you can hike. People do rappelling and rope climbing and stuff in the canyon. It’s very beautiful trail. If you have measure time of 3-4 hours you must visit this place for a hike. Happy trailing.
Quite amazing. Easy to enjoy the trails for someone who is not in fantastic shape. Our family of 14 with ages raging from 8-78 thoroughly enjoyed this in 99 degree weather. Just pace yourself, be smart, and drink your water. We took our two little Poodles and brought water for them, it was lovely! The natural formations were gorgeous - unique rocks, trees, plant life. Its worth seeing. Plus today was fee-free entry!
Awesome place to hike and has great views
A very beautiful hike. Great for bringing the kids. If you want to see more water than plan on going in the early spring for a better chance. Its still a great hike.
We had perfect timing and missed the crowd. It is an amazing walk through towering rock walls. We wished we could have seen it when water was running but it was amazing none the less.
Good fairly easy hike, really good for kids 3+. Sandy walks and short climbs. Look for the checker board on the wall.
So many beautiful places to hike. My favorites were red reef trail and Babylon Arch. The red reef trail has a rope where you can climb over a rock and pool of water.
Been here several times and it is different every season. I love that it can be a quick hike or several hours. This is a great hike for the entire family. While it is not the easiest hike to drive to or from it is worth it. Plan to arrive early as there are not a ton of parking spaces available. Also be aware there is an access fee to enter. Camping is available but Ive never done it.
We went to the campground area wanting to explore the trails and dinosaur footprints, and have a picnic. Alas, parking is very limited for day use and was completely full. We had to turn around and leave. Fortunately for us, we live locally and can try again sometime. Update: we did return later and had a great time.
Beautiful park easy access from St George. We did some really beautiful hikes with our kids for a few hours. It was a true surprise for us as we were discovering nearby parks.
Excellent hiking trail along the flooded canyon. Some passages are tricky. We met and helped a student with hurt ankle. So always be ready and prepared with first aid and water when you hike in the National Parks. It is the wilderness despite the signs and dirt path. This is a lesser park on the tourist list hence you will enjoy the land mostly by yourself. Especially in low season. A really fun place for the kids.
Really overlooked hidden gem of a recreation area. So much to do and so beautiful. The canyon is always an amazing hike but the area out by old Babylon is really cool as well. Make sure to have something that does decent in sand 4x4 or at least high clearance we pulled a car out on one of our two trips and you end up blocking the road for everyone else. No low clearance Honda’s etc.
There are so many hikes to choose from here. So much beauty! Rock climbing. An arch that looks like a giant head. Great place to take kids. Walk short or long. Cant wait to go back.
This was a great late winter get away to a little warmer weather and amazing desert camping! Beautiful scenery, great easy hikes and all around wonderful place to stay/ camp and play!
A friend & I wanted to hike to the rim of the red mountain overlooking Kayenta. The hike is very long & Sandy/Rocky so make sure to prepare properly. We drank most of our water on the way & should have brought more for the length of the hike. Also make sure to bring a hat, long sleeve shirt (if summertime& comfortable hiking shoes. We would do the hike again. The hike was between 12-13 miles and we started at the trailhead in Damron Valley
There is so much to do and see here. Dinosaur footprints, petroglyphs, hiking, mountain biking, ohv trails, rock climbing, birding, and camping; all found among stunning vistas and rock formations, giving every nature fan something to love. While a 4x4 vehicle is nice to have, it is not necessary, as many of the areas features are located on decent roads most vehicles can travel.
Good. We made a quick stop here on way back from vacation. Tried the red reef trail. Was a fun and easy hike for the most part. Towards the end a wall blocks the trail. Adults and older kids can climb up using footholds cut into the rock and a rope ladder hanging there. We had tried the dinosaur trail sometime back, it was a decent hike too.
Quiet and peaceful. the beauty is breathtaking and unlike anywhere in the world. I am glad there is great access for hiking, biking, horse back riding and site seeing. there are so many access points that include the pioneer park, brooks park, red hills parkway, Middleton, green springs, exit 13, cottonwood in hurricane and many more. this truly is a great place for a hike or run. If you are vigilant you will find several animals including the desert tortoise, diamond back rattle snake, great basin rattle snake, cotton tail rabbit, great western lizard and even an occasional Gila monster has bee sited. The terrain varies from sand, sandstone, lava rock and hard pack dirt. I have seen Brigham tea, creosote, sage, mesquite , barrel cactus, cholla, cactus, prickly pear cactus, yuca cactus, and Joshua trees, all of which are everywhere to be seen. I recommend you stop in Pioneer park to hike the Narrows(fat man squeeze), and the Dixie sugar loaf which are both main stays of the area. other fun hikes are the Owens loop and city creek. if you want to just mess around there are many things to see and do there. chuckwalla is also a good hike or mountain bike. this area also includes rock climbing and repelling on sandstone. It varies from easy to moderate for all activities. There are restroom (vault styleat this location. I you are adventurous the las Hike I recommend is the Temple quarry hike to see where they mined large rock to make the foundation of the LDS temple that sits in the middle of St. George. It is a couple mile hike round trip but overall pretty easy to hike for novice hikers.
Very cool place to check out, bathrooms are there but parking can be a pain. Camping is also ready. Trails are very nice and marked great. I recommend it. During my visit, there was no water but enjoyed my hike anyways. Jeff Mullins Photography Adventures. Get Your Hike On!
I give it 5 stars in the spring because in the summer the water can be gone or very low. We loved this little canyon swimming hole. Natural water slide when there is enough water!
Many trails lead you to the most spectacular views, and see gorgeous mountains.many of the trails are rough and sometimes very steep, but its a worth the trip.
Beautiful hike, easy enough for younger children. There is one point on the trail that you have to use a rope and steps carved into the rock to get through that could be too much for some people, but everyone in our group made it through without issue. Our youngest was five and did receive a little assistance. I got up and down the falls with a baby backpack on and had no issues.
As we were driving trying to find an open hike, we spotted this alongside the road. Doesn’t look like much from the road but walking down you see the depth of the gorgeous red rocks. Many had climbing gear and this would be a great place. We just roamed around and climbed up without, it’s not all technical. Stunning hidden treasure, definitely worth the stop off the side of the road.
One of my favorite hikes of all time! Its a fairly short and mild hike. So much fun to run around and climb the red rocks and such a beautiful place!
This is my new favorite hike! We took our kids ages 8, 6, and 2 and it was fantastic. Its not steep and while there is a bit of climbing here and there it is an easy trail that didnt exahust anyone. The pools and little water crossings mixed things up and made it fun. We went in late February so it was not crowded at all and the weather was beautiful. We want to come back in the summer sometime to play a bit more in the water. We did take our littles up the rock with a rope and back down again. I probably wouldnt reccommend that, but our kids have taken rocking climbing classes and were up for the challenge. Anyway even if you dont do the rock with the rope, it is still an amazing hike! If you are in the area make sure you try this one!
One of my favorite places for a quick hike. It has breathtaking views and only 20 minutes from St. George. Its very family friendly!
Super fun easy hike to do with friends. I do think that I’d would be a tough one for small children. We brought a baby with a carrier and it was difficult. It was beautiful great weather. Absolutely love the red rock. We went in low light so we didn’t have tons of time. I recommend going when you have a couple hours free before dark.
I live in a vacation spot. You havent seen anything until you see Utah. We have secret waterfalls, hot springs not listed, back country trails not on the map. The most beautiful canyons ever. Go to Goblin Valley virtual tour just one of many places. The camping, hiking ,fishing awesome. Nothing like cooking a fresh water fish right out of the water into the frying pan.. Just out the back door. Dont miss it
We got to the trailhead around 8:30 on a Saturday. There is no parking lot so you just park on the street. Still lots of parking left. Once you hit the trail its decently marked but can get a bit confusing once you get farther in. Views are great. Definitely worth a visit if you have a couple of hours to spare! Highly recommend. There are no bathrooms or trash cans.
There are multiple trails. Red reef goes to "waterfall" if there is water. Silver reef goes to some dinosaur tracks. Another trail goes to an abandoned Indian site. My two year old girl was able to walk the Red Reef and Silver Reef trails. Many areas of shade along the way. We went at around 1pm over labor day weekend.
Beautiful hike and perfect for little kids! Lots of shade onxe youre in the canyon and a bunch of little caves for the kids to climb in. The stream was all dried up with several little ponds left over which mase it easy to get around. The rope climb was a little sketchy to get the kids through but doable. Would love to go back when the river is flowing.
It was beautiful and peaceful out here. It is dirt roads, and some places are pretty rough, but worth the drive. The kids loved playing in the creek and climbing on the rocks. There were no other people and the temperature was perfect. (We were there May 25th). If you just need to escape outdoors this is a good place to do it.
Great hiking/walking area that is free of charge... Regardless of fitness level or capability, this is a great place to spend the morning or the day. There is installed equipment for more adventurous types... Rapelling!
Ill start off by saying that this is in a fee area, but its well worth the $5 or $10 dollars for day use. Absolutely beautiful hike that all of my family (5 little ones 1-9 years oldwere able to complete with a great payoff. We did this 10 May 2019 and the there was tons of water creating several falls that you could even slide down. If you just hike to the falls with the rope and back, youre only looking at 1 Mike RT and plenty of chances to cool off. Theres also an arch and lovely scenery for those making the venture. I will be back to do this one again.
Bone Wash Trail is a beautiful hike. After a wet season, if you take the fork (in the washto the left and hiking all the way to the end of the canyon, youll end up at a lovely pond. This is one of my favorite natural areas.
Yes and yes. Natural waterfalls and water slides. We took the dog. Pretty easy hike until the falls. We continued on for another half an hour, but its not an official trail, so we turned back at some point. You can keep going though. We went back to the falls and hung out. A lot of visitors. Bring sunblock and lunch. Best picnic spot.
We hiked to Elephant Arch recently. From the Millcreek trailhead it was probably 2+ miles to get there. Round trip it took our family 2.5 hours with stops, and playing in the sand. Most of the hike you are walking in and through sand in washes. It was an awesome hike but walking through so much sand can get old for that long. We did an afternoon hike and did not see very many people there. We loved the hike, but I would not do this hike in the summer. Still bring plenty of water no matter when you go. Watch for the trail signs as it can get easy to get lost or on the wrong trail. When you get close to the arch it gets pretty steep, and with the sand, it can get slippery, so bring proper shoes. It was a great hike. If you havent gone yet, give it a try.
Absolutely beautiful...non strenuous hike our guide was almost 80...I wouldnt attempt it if its raining but mid spring perfect temps and stunning!
Friendly staff, amazing course...wish we had time to go back this trip, will definitely be making it a yearly stop on vacation...we went golfing. Remember the hour time difference if you are coming from Vegas :)
We love Red Cliffs! These pictures are from early Spring. The fee is 5 dollars but we were at use our National Parks pass. Its a great place to visit in the summer. There is also clean drinking water there. I regret I didnt get any pictures of the dinosaur tracks, but there are some there.
One of the most beautiful places Ive been on earth! Look near the camping area for waterfalls and the most beautiful trail along the creek. The cliffs, trees, and creek are breathtaking. The colors at sunset are out of this world!
What an amazing place for a day hike or many day hikes and stay and camp at the campground. My Dad grew up in this area and thats why we made the trek from St George. As you head out on the main trail out of the campground you eventually come to the "Indian steps". The park service has done a little maintenance here and installed a rope to aid the less able bodied. But it is so amazing to climb steps that were cut into the rocks hundreds of years ago by Native Americans whom dwelled in this area. There is a trail to see ruins as well. Also there is a restored early pioneer home at as you enter the park. The campground is fantastic. Has gazebos and will accommodate everythimg from tents to even large motorhomes. You can stay for a night or a week to experience all that this relatively unknown area has to offer. If you are planning on staying over a holiday its a great idea to reserve a spot. Also, to go on the hikes you will need sneakers no sandels or flip-flops. The sand is deep. And there are several areas where climbing is necessary. The campground has water and toilets. But everything else you will need to bring. This is an amazing place to see. To walk in the places that were used in ancient times. Close to the town of Leeds and not to far from St George. Make sure you take plenty of water with you on the trail and you have to watch for flash floods in narrow canyons if its raining. I have been here many time over the years. And it is always suprising how beautiful this is. And its relatively unknown. So you can enjoy your time. The hike is great for kids. My 5 YO needed help across the Indian steps and a few of the larger rocks. This is a must see if you have some time in Southern Utah.
This is our first time coming to this area. All we can say is WOW. We hiked up the Red Reef trails and was totally surprised with the amount of beauty in this place. The awesome land scape and actually getting to see Dinosaurs foot prints. I think this is one cool place. Only wish there was water flowing through the creek. That would have made for some fun. If I have to do this again I would probably come in May so we could experience the water. It was a little hot and humid on the day we happened to check out this place. But still had a great time.
Stunningly beautiful. We had a 5 year old with us and he did just fine. People had dogs. There are plenty of little hikes (less than 1/4 a mileand a nice easy hike to the waterfall but it dries up in summer. We were there in June and it was only a puddle.
This is my favorite place and it also right in my back yard. I LOVE running the trails here and the absolute silence. There is never anyone around so I feel it my own private area. The red mountains and grassy plateaus are awe inspiring. It’s so peaceful
What an amazing experience. Ive driven by this place on I-15 more times than I can recall, and will now likely return to Red Cliffs in the future. The color of the rock is truly a wonderfully rich reddish orange. And the dirt /sand is the same. We enjoyed our our playful dog changed colors right in front of our eyes - from while to an orange hue. Good times! The kids love the place, which is a good compliment as they really didnt want to visit!
Some of the best hiking in St. George! This hike it great for kids and adults. Our 2 year old has hiked it on her own twice now! The views are beautiful! This hike is especially good on a hot day because you can hike close to the river and play/ cool off while you hike!
