Built in 1822, this statue-rich cemetery features mausoleums of many notables, including Eva Perón.
Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires
Description
They dont accept cash in the payment. Terrible that they want to charge us 10 dólares to enter inside by card. Go to Chacarita cementery. Free entrance!
MoreThe entrance is not free. You have to line up and pay with a credit card for the $1500 entrance fee. They do not accept cash. You will be turned away. What a waste of a trip to get here since cash is king in Buenos Aires and i havent been carrying a card. What a shame that Argentina is seemingly so poor as to charge an entrance fee to visit a cemetery. Making pesos of dead.souls..
MoreUnique place that can tie together the story of a country through the big names whose bodies rest here.
MoreI wouldn’t bother going here if you’re a foreigner, you get charged just to walk around and look at some tombstones. It’s ridiculous! Nothing spectacular, I’d save you’re money and go elsewhere. It’s a tourist trap.
MoreProbably looks like five stars inside, but I wouldn’t know l, because they now charge 1400 pesos by debit / credit only (which equates to about 10 USDfor international tourists. National parks have charged less for entry! I agree that it’s reasonable to pay a fee for maintenance but $10 is a bit much.
MoreVery interesting..... What money can buy you after you are dead.... Not a free ticket for the people that come and see your tomb, has there is a $1,400 pesos entry fee for international touring. Still a nice place to visit.
MoreUnfortunately the entrance is paid for extranjeros, 1400p. So they made a tourist attraction out of a cemetery!
MoreI recommend going with a guide or reading the stories before visiting. Great architecture! Place where Evita Peron is resting.
MoreGo with a tour guide, but go! Its great and you can learn a lot. A booked an Airbnb experience with Esteban and I would totally do it again!!
More6 stars! Named one of world’s greatest cemeteries. My wife and I spent over an hour wandering around the cemetery. It was such a historical and educational experience. We did t use a guide other than the free pamphlet and Google/Wikipedia.Interestingly, the day we arrived was the 70th anniversary of the death of Evita. Seeing all the flowers on her tomb was very touching.
MoreFor foreigners its not free you have to pay 1400🇦🇷 Pesos and they do not accept cash, only credit or debit card.Place is really nice and many of famous person are sleeping peacefully.A must visit place in Argentina.
MoreEntrance is not free. 1400 argentino pesos is the entrance fee.The place is very beautiful. Its one of the most haunted places in Argentina and also one of the best cymetry in the world. Many famous person not sleeping peacefully here.Must visit place if you are in Argentina.Take around 2 hours to visit whole place. Try to go in the morning so you can roam outside and there are shops available.
MoreHalf museum, half cemetery. Recoleta Cemetery did not disappoint with the most beautiful mausoleums, busts, and headstones Ive ever seen. While Eva Peron is buried here, please be sure to see the other notable graves on the site! There certainly ones that arent to be missed!
MoreNot a conventional tourist site, but nice to visit. The top Argentinians are buried here-including Évita. The mausoleums are beautifully crafted. The cemetery is very clean and nicely arranged. Definitely superior to Père Lachaise in Paris. I was pleasantly surprised. Read up on your history for some of the people here. Some of the stories are quite fascinating. Entry used to be free, but alas, capitalism has struck here, too. Small fee to pay, worth it to have a stroll and pay respects.
MoreIts over priced. Outrageous they charge tourists 1,400 pesos and only on card so its not the real exchange rate . Like most attractions in Argentina and Latin America they charge tourists way more than locals as they think tourists have a never ending supply of money.
MoreRecoleta is a nice area and this cemetery is large and majestic. If you around Recoleta, come visit this wonderful place.
MorePaying for tourists as of April 2022. No “symbolic contribution” either, at 1400$ (14usd - they don’t accept cash). First time i see a cemetery charge - and taking such advantage of tourism (especially when people travelling now should be encouraged and not discouraged- really shameful. Without saying that except Peron there is no internationally-famous personality buried here.Note that from the adjacent mall you can get a partial view overlooking the place.
MoreThe most outstanding, impressive place Ive been probably ever. Grandiose is really the word I would use. The sepulchres are so ornate and so beautifully kept. To observe the burial places of prominent figures in Argentinas history is an honor. Truly spectacular to see on a nice day like today.
MoreBeautiful architecture and many of the most renowned politicians and high society names can be found here, including Evitas grave. So many interesting statues , including a couple who requested to be looking in opposite directions. A lot of history, lots of money. Unfortunately, many of the graves are not properly taken care of. Still worth visiting.
MoreVery interesting atmosphere and impressive tombs. The grave of Evita does not stand out particularly. It is worth a visit but the entrance fee could be a bit cheaper.
MoreThey have started charging tourists to enter - 1,400 peso payable by card only (i.e. no blue dollar), equivalent to 12 USD. They have to provide more info - leaflets, tours, signage - to justify the price. They have free tours in Spanish, but none in any other language. Considering foreigners pay double. Otherwise, its an interesting and peaceful place.
MoreFantastic experience ! Foreign must pay $1400, residents free.
Absolutely great experience. Though we didn’t have a guide (which I am sure would make it much more interestingwe liked the beauty. It was smaller than I expected but each mausoleum was different and it was very interesting. Ticket for a foreigner cost around 12EUR.
MoreAmazing architecture and a fascinating place. However, the new entry price for foreign tourists is a whopping $1400 ARS and only payable by card (at least currently, they said they may accept cash in the future). There is scant information and when we arrived no guided tours were available (we imagine this would have been at an extra cost as well).
MoreI know it might seem weird to go and check out a cemetery... but it really is a very interesting, beautiful, and oddly intriguing place! We found the Evita tomb and some other very tombs.
MoreAmazing and humbling experience. The annals of time are phenomenally preserved for the aristocracy, rich and less elite alike.Fascinating display of Catholic burial rituals made available to the public a history of those gone but not forgotten, spanning more than a hundred years. Many family trees rest among the trees here at Recoleta.A wonderful experience for those interested in all facets of life.
MoreEven though a lot of people fear cemeteries, this one might be seen in another way. Most of the tombs are artworks, crafted to display wealth. There’s a lot of know politicians, like ex-presidents, artists, notable people, and, of course, Evita Peron, Argentinian icon. The garden is beautiful and you can make incredible photos.
MoreCelebration of Death is a concept which differs from place to place, religion religion and culture to culture. But even when this occasion is celebrated, there can be no better place to do so that the Recoleta Cemetery, in Buenos Aires. It is not just a cemetery but a custodian of art and beauty. Was surprised that it is still used actively and I witnessed a funeral in progress. A few hours is needed to walk around this cemetery and every minute of that walk is memorable
MoreFabulously interesting place to visit whilst in Buenos Aires. Spend one or two hours there and take lots of photos. Just get lost in there - so many unique points of interest.
MoreBeautiful and historic place. The architecture is just so rich, there is not enough time to enjoy it all in just a couple hours. Each little part of the cemetery has history in it. Finding the Eva Perons niche without a map or guide quickly became a challenge. Absolutely recommended.
MoreA place in Buenos Aires you cant miss! Although cemiteries are kind of spooky for some people, this cemitery has got a lot of stories that are worth knowing. You have two options before visiting there, either you hire a guide (the best optionwholl explain the details about it, or you can do some research, so that you can find the stories about the people who are burried there. When visiting, youre going to search for the tumbs which have these amazing stories. I did the second option. I super recommend the place, anyway.
MoreDidn’t think taking a walking tour in a cemetery would be cool, but it was!! We did a free walking tour with Maryann and she was great. It was like walking around a small city. I loved learning about the stories of each mausoleum. Very cool afternoon.
MoreWow, it’s like a little city in here with high rise crypts that pay tribute to the wealthy deceased. Actually very over the top. Interesting, but strangely unsettling. I mean do they have normal neighbor issues? How big is too big? Do they fight over drainage issues and repairs? How many family members can fit? Maybe a dozen in some. Who’s in and who’s out? No disrespect intended. It’s just that how much is too much? Many are in disrepair as those buried are long forgotten despite their once great memorial. Alas, perhaps none of it matters in the end? RIP.
MoreThis is probably one of the most iconic area of Buenos Aires. The cemetery is really remarkable with graves from the mid 18hundreds to modern ones. Most people go and look for the most famous grave the one Evita Peron one. But there are hundreds of other that are quite remarkable and worth a visit.
MoreThis huge cemetery houses some of the wealthiest families in Buenos Aires. You can spend about a hour wandering the maze of tombs, each unique and interesting. Entry is free and the area is well served by local transport.
MoreDefinitely an interesting place, not somewhere to take selfies, but the mausoleums are very ornate, and intricately decorated. Very inspiring artwork around every turn, some of the graves are better kept than others, but overall not a big problem.
MoreRecoleta CemeteryPROSAbsolutely a MUST SEE when visiting Buenos AiresOne of the most amazing cemeteries you will ever seeIf you are a lover of history then you MUST visit this cemetaryALL burial chambers are mausoleumsIt is a huge cemetery and you could easily spend 2-3 hrsCONSNone
MoreRecoleta Cemetery is a must see during your trip to BA. Come for the history but stay for the park and neighborhood. There is plenty to do and see and eat and drink nearby after you see the final resting place for several of BA most beloved and famous citizens. The architecture and history of the cemetery itself are without equal, just a completely unique experience. It’s nice to have a guide or do your homework in advance but at the same time getting lost here and letting yourself and your imagination wander throughout the cemetery is equally enjoyable. A gentle and good reminder we are here but for the briefest moment in time. Enjoy!
MoreAbsolutely love this place!! It has so much history and so many statues and structures of different kinds and shapes. You can easily spend half a day or more exploring the wondrous cemetery. The guards were friendly enough to let us keep our backpacks with them at the entrance. A must visit!
MoreMust see when you come to BAThought it was going to be a quick trip to see the resting place if Eva Perron. But what a fascinating place to wander around...!The variety of mausoleums is staggering. Huge assortment of a sculptures, stonework and of course the caskets!Really interesting and worth a visit. Go early like we did to avoid the bigger tour groups 👍
MoreI never thought cemetery was a touristic place and was a big surprise.FAMOUS for the once first lady Evita Peron and after her death, everybody want to visit and I did.
MoreRecoleta Cemetery is a true city of the dead within the city of the living. Opened in the early 19th century, this five hectare cemetery is the final resting place for over 4600 souls. The Cemetery is open to the public during the daytime and entrance is free. You can stroll through the crypts and mausoleums at your own pace or you can join one of several guided tours. There is no scarcity of ghost stories in this land of the dead: most famous amongst which is the legend of La dama de Blanco. Not for the faint hearted!!!
MoreOne of my favorite place to visit, contemplate and enjoy the silence. Amazing story telling world famous graveyard with lots of stunning graves or famous people. Unfortunately some of them are abandoned and in bad conditions but still mysteriously story’s telling.
MoreWow they really care about the dead here. The devotion the icons and families buried here says a lot about the culture. Its something to be admired and one must see it for themselves. The attention to detail is astounding and each burial holds so much character and history
MoreNever expected to be so impressed with a cemetery. But this is not a burial place for anyone; it is for the rich and famous. The whole site is full of beautiful stone or marbled mausolea. Family members buried together in their own private mausoleum. Avenues criss-cross the site and the size and grandeur of the mausolea is a claim to the status of the individual or family. The biggest draw is the mausoleum housing Eva Peron. This place is free to visit and you can easily spend 1 or two hours here. When not too many people around, it has a very calming and tranquil feel to the place.
MoreIt may seem odd at first to characterize a cemetery as beautiful, but it is truly justified when referencing Recoleta. The monuments have incredible detail etched into every stone & the architecture is astounding. One can easily get lost in the maze here for an entire day, but beware of the sun! Many famous and historically significant individuals are also buried here, so do a little research before hand and let the scavenger hunt begin!
MoreInteresting place well worth a visit. I spent about 30mins there before I had seen enough coffins. Some of the architecture is unique and tells a story about the family that build it. There is an amazing juxtaposition of the surrounding suburban life as you wander around. The earliest tomb I found was 1818 but I wasnt looking too hard. There is a free museum nextdoor that will make the trek out worth it.
MoreThis is one of my favourites tourists atraccions, the architecture is amazing and theres a lot of history, Here are very important people like Evita Peron, Irigoyen and more importan politicians, there are small paths to go where theyre is nobody, fantastic .MUST VISIT!!
MoreI dont know how I can give 5 stars to a cemetery...However La Recoleta has so many beautiful crypts and plants, it is a nice place to relax for a while.Very popular with the tourists, mainly because of Eva Peron... She lies 5 meters underground in her family crypt. So look for Duarte.Clean toilets. Free tours with the cemetery guides.
MoreSuper cool place to come and totally free!... Would highly recommend it!They also give put free guided tours (not quite sure how it works but a great incentive). Some of the graves are absolutely fascinating and very spooky.
