We visited Rawat Fort on February 21, 2022 during my last trip to Pakistan. It was my first time there and I must say it was very lovely ! Very historical spot, and a nice place to take pictures, relax and talk, take a walk and soak up the beauty of the place. It was quiet and peaceful the day we were there, and would be a nice place for families to visit, and the architecture and landscape make it ideal for a wedding photo shoot… or any photo shoot! Another one of the many Beautiful places in Pakistan.
Fort is on Grand Truck Road at Rawaat towards Rawalpindi,it used as temporary stay that time, Its a beautiful place to visit but time and authorities let it helpless, nice place to visit.
Just on the main G.T road.Among the many forgotten relics spread across the dry and arid land of Potohar Plateau is the Rawat Fort, which lies about 18km east of Rawalpindi on G.T. Road. The etymology of the word ‘Rawat’ is said to trace back to the Arabic word ‘rebaat’ which mean ‘sarai’ in Urdu – a roadside inn for travellers. Contemporary historians have also concluded that the building’s design resembles a sarai rather than a fort. Historically, many of these roadside inns lined the G.T. Road and were used by invaders from Central Asia and Afghanistan. According to traditions, Rawat Fort was built by the Ghakkar tribe in 16th century. The region is also said to have been the battleground between the Ghakkar chief Sultan Sarang Khan and Sher Shah Suri in 1546 AD. The central courtyard of the fort contains ruined graves, that supposedly belong to the tribal chief and his two sons, who died fighting Sher Shah Suri. The two main entrances open to the east and the west. The walls of the fort are lined with small rooms, perhaps rented out to travellers. A quadrangular building, resembling a baradari, can also be found within the fort, along with a mosque. However, the original shape of the fort has been modified several times as it has gone under renovation and maintenance.
This a very small fort with a boundary wall and some remaints of rooms and buildings on the side. There is a very big, splendid mosque inside the fort. No entry tickets. Its is quite nearby GT road. Wear close shoes when visiting due to uneven surface.
One of the best historical place in surrounding of Islamabad. The fort was founded as a caravanserai in the 15th century by the Delhi Sultanate, though the caravan itself may have been built atop a Ghaznavid-era fort that was established in 1036 CE. The caravanserai was then later fortified in the 16th century by the local Gakhar – warrior clan loyal to the Mughal emperor Humayun in order to defend the Pothohar plateau from Sher Shah Suris forces. The fort was the scene of a battle between the Gakhar chief Sultan Sarang and Afghan king Sher Shah Suri in 1546. Sultan Sarang was captured, tortured, and then executed at the fort by the forces of Sher Shah Suri, and then buried at the fort.
Loved this fort. The historic architecture of Delhi Sultanate attracts you a bit but not as the Mughals do.Its very close to the Islamabad expressway in rawat. 10 minutes max drive from main Islamabad expressway.Among the many forgotten relics spread across the dry and arid land of Potohar Plateau is the Rawat Fort, which lies about 18km east of Rawalpindi on G.T. Historical place in the heart of city only few yards away from G.T Road.
We are delighted to view this old historical fort that is located in Rawat near to Islamabad only on 1 hour drive. All people should visit here and to know about the right historians history and their services. Good to see but government should preserve it.
A neglected historical fort. Some parts are being restored in a very unauthentic manner but still this place gives you a strong vibe for its history. A small Fort or an out post with some graves but mutilated and not cared for. Somehow gives a sad feeling.
A 16th century Inn (saraiiat GT road with graves of Sultan Sarang khan and his sons contains rooms and a mosqueAbout 1-2 hours drive from Islamabad depends on traffic conditionsThat place is not maintained but still people who are interested in history must visit
It is a tremendous Tourist Place for History Lovers
Good and picturesque place, locals tell you not to climb the walls coz of the houses in the near vicinity... Plus there are a lot of Shahtoot trees as well...
You can visit easily because of easy approach at GT Road Rawat.
The Place is Quite & Peaceful but needs so much restoration. It could become a tourists attraction if Govt. Pays attention to it.
They are trying to preserve this old stopover of Sheh Shah Suri , graves as old as 15th Century . Nice place to visit and lost in history. The fort was built in the 10th Century. Locals told me since PTI government came in, for the first time in Pakistans history, government is trying to repair and preserve this asset
We are all erasing the history of this place, when you will visit there you will see nothing old but new construction.....sadly
A small fort can be visited within half an hour . Not well preserved except main gate & central building . A mosque is located inside it for nearby community. Completely encircled by modern day house . Not worth a special visit from far areas.
Not a place to visit specially never go in the evening.. if want to go only early morning or in mid day
It is a small but beautiful historical fort, with stone walls and stone buildings, hidden behind the buildings on the main GT road Rawat. It has a car park and a small entrance fee. Once inside, you can quickly check out all the area within half an hour. However, the most disappointing part is that this fort lacks proper maintenance and has not enough historical description for visitors. Visitors dont get to know the history of these buildings or graves. Hopefully, the govt will focus more on developing this fort.
Small but beautiful place to visit,Renovation is underway, it will be completed soon,
No care by Authorities fort wall is broken no cleanness
It is a very good place for those who are fond of exploring history and architects .very airy and good place .it is situated at a height at the head of Rawat bazar at GT Road.
A beautiful old place but theres not so much to see little bit information, a tomb, masjid and ruins. Definitely a really nice atmosphere.
Beautiful Historical place.. there is a gave yard in which a Ghakhar family Sardar is buried... There is a Fort Mosque. Beautiful and comfortable..

Its a amazing historical place but it is not well maintained but maintains work at progressed there is no proper parking area and your car will most likely be parked on the road. I dont suggest taking small babies or kids to this fort or even elderly people because there are no facilities such as restrooms and seating arrangements but over all it is great for photography and sightseeing
Heritage site, now under government stewardship. Conservation works under way to preserve this site, which in parts dates back to the 11th century
Thats a historical must visiting place for history lovers. When i visited, the process of refurbishment was stared. They were building boundary wall of fort. Lots of thing were being changed. The tomb stone was renamed. The fort was founded as a caravanserai in the 15th century by Salteen-e-Dehli, though the caravan itself may have been built atop a Ghaznavid-era fort that was established in 1036 CE.
Loving the atmosphere here. Glad to see some reconstruction work happening. Its a little dirty, there needs to be a lot of cleaning done, especially trimming of long grass and dusty patches but regardless its comparatively quite clean.Met one of the assistant curators and they mentioned that theres been a lot of excavation done and have found more skeletons of buried sons of the Khan who presided here.
16th Century Fort, needs serious attention to preserve and speed up the restoration process. It can be a be helpful to grow tourism industry.
Heritage. Of. Pakistan. Oldest. Thing. NYC. And. Historical place. Must vist. Old is gold.
Not well maintained but thats a good thing because you get the feel of the time!A lot of history is buried in this small fort.
