Ravana Phadi Cave Temples - Hindu temple in Gajendragarh, India
Ravana Phadi is a nice and calm place. Its about 800mts from Aihole temple.. Its carved out of a single stone.. The carvings are of Lord Shiva.. There is no much crowd. Hardly this place takes 10min to cover.. Carvings are beautiful, if you got time, then definitely its a visit place
Must visit here for nataraj sculpture.
I like this a little better than at Badami, even though it’s smaller. It’s built earlier than Badami and it’s equally beautiful
Very clean and neat
Ravan phadi cave temple is a rock cut temple of Chalukya period built in 6 th century, situated at aihole village in bagalkot district, Karnataka. Aihole was once capital of Chalukya kingdom, consists of at least 9 temple complexes spread over Aihole around 2 km radius. Ravan phadi is one of them, consists of mahisasur Marconi statue and lord shiva statue in nateeja form.Aihole is around 35 km from Badami which is famous for rock cuts temples. One can reach Aihole by own vehicle or shuttle bus which runs from Badami to Aihole throughout the day.
The temple houses a Shiv Linga and there is a Nandi outside.
Its slightly off the main road, so not many tourist wander here, but its worth the visit. It is like a rock cut cave and inside there are beautiful stone carved idols. The details are so fine that you can not take your eyes off those.
Absolute gem in Aihole . Just a short drive from the Durga temple complex. Quite and unhurried - limited maintained but absolutely beautiful . Small cave temple in the centre with other shiva temples around in the small complex . The shiva ( as Natarajasurrounded by his family -At the entrance of the main temple is absolutely superb
Amazing carving worth a visit
Best cave carvings I have seen in recent times. If you are visiting Aihole then this place is must visit, I was so surprised after seeing the artwork on the walls of the cave.Highly recommended place to visit.
Ravanaphadi cave temple, Aihole, KarnatakaThis particular representation of Shiva, his family and the matrikas accompanying them is probably an ode to the Pauranic story in which Lord Shiva performs a dance after defeating the powerful asura king named Andhaka (who as per Shiva Purāna is actually the son of Shiva and Parvati but raised by the asura Hiraṇyākṣa). This Andhaka had several special boons from Lord Brahma which almost granted him immortality, the only exception was that he could be killed by Lord Shiva.Once in his blind arrogance, he tried to abduct Devi Parvati who invokes the Gods for her protection. A great battle ensues, but as per another boon granted to Andhaka from every drop of his blood that falls on the ground, a new Andhaka is born. To address this difficult situation Lord Vishnu creates matrikas, the mother-goddesses who drink up the falling blood drops so that finally Andhaka can be decapitated by Lord Shiva’s trident. In one of the variations of this story, Lord Shiva is said to have forgiven Andhaka because he takes refuge in the Lord.Representations of Nataraja Shiva along with matrikas are also seen in some of the caves at Ellora, including the famous Kailasha temple (cave 14). With regard to the particular representation at Ravanaphadi at Aihole, it is also interesting to note that the Chalukya kings claimed to have been nursed by the Saptamatrikas. They considered them as giver of powers to defeat the enemies; matrikas thus figured prominently in their sculptural art, especially in the later Chalukyan period (11th to 13th century).
Superb carvings very good location
Beautiful rock cut architecture
Amazing..small cave compare to badami caves but nice one . Its is shiva temple.
Nice place but village occupied lot of sites of archeological importance
If travelling from Pattadakal, Ravana Phadi caves are on right side, just before Aihole temple complex. Or just few hundred meters after Hachappagudi temples which will be on left when coming from Pattadakal. One star less due to off location. It is sort of "In the middle of nowhere" No facilities nearby, no entrance fees, no parking charges, can take your car right upto the entrance. Very rare visitors due to location. However the cave temples have beautiful elaborate and intricate carvings of Hindu gods, the temple is dedicated to Shiva. Make sure to look around including ceiling for the carvings. They are around 1500 years old. If you are visiting Aihole, spare 30-40 minutes for this.
One of the must visit place in Aihole. An exquisite 10 handed Nataraja sculpture, flanked on sides by Saptha mathrikas, Parvathi, Ganapathy and Karthikeya. There are sone carvings of Varahamurthy, Mahishasuramardhini.Part of early Chalukyan Architecture
Nice place but not that much popular the cave is carved and the statues are really nice but as usual some are destroyed by the mughals .
A must visit tourist attraction in Aihole
The Ravalaphadi temple, hewn out of rock, is nestled along the Malprabha river. The temple boasts a large statue of a dancing nataraja with apsaras on the wall.It also has one of the rarer structures seen in India — a standing Ganesha. Beyond the religious aspect, one walks away amazed at the effort put into these temples that stood the test of time, far beyond the empires that were their patrons.#2GhumakkarIncredible India Karnataka Tourism Archaeological Survey of India

Aihole used to be the capital of Chalukya dynasty. The Ravana Phadi Cave Temple is rock cut Hindu temple, built somewhere in 550AD. Stunning rock sculptures were lost by the passing time and only remnants of art work remains on the ceiling. Aihole is having 125 temples . Worship of lord Shiva is done at the Ravana Phadi temple which is cut in rock. Review will be too long if all the details are penned. It is better to visit Aihole and enjoy beauty of the art work, carried out by the artisans of Chalukya time, in all these 125 temples.Come to Bagalkot. From here you can go to Aihole, Pattadakkal, Badami Caves, Kudala Sangama which are nearby areas to Aihole.Good Luck.
Famously termed the cradle of Hindu Rock Architecture.Aihole is one of the oldest settlement in india.
RavanaPhadi rockcut cave temple,Aihole -The first true gem of Chalukyan architecture is rock-cut temple devoted to Shiva.Unlike many other rock-cut temples in India, Ravana Phadi has a large plain field in the front of outcrop and architects have used this with success.Entrance in the cave opens to the southwest. Cave itself stands on a high platform and can be reached by a flight of steps. In the front of the entrance in the temple there stands a huge, monolithic pillar with a square base. Closer to the entrance is a sculpture of Nandi – bull which Shiva rides. The bull is seated on a platform and is facing the cave.On both sides from the entrance there are located two smaller, free-standing pillared halls, adding much effect to the magnificent architecture of entrance in temple.Entrance in the cave is adorned with two columns adorned with stone carvings. Both sides of the entrance are decorated with reliefs of fat-bellied deities. Possibly these are depictions of Kubera, guardian of wealth
Place is good butManagement very bad
Must visit. Important historical place.
(Visited in June 2019 - To History buffs, architecture lovers, anyone with a religious bent of mind or inclined towards cultural heritage - this is one of the greatest & underrated cave temples of India. The unassuming Ravana Phadi cave at Aihole attributed to Chalukyas of Badami & dedicated to Lord Shiva has the famous grand relief of Lord Shiva as Nataraja dancing, watched by Goddess Parvati, Lord Vinayaka, Skanda and Saptamatrikas. Other carved sculptures include Mahishasura mardhini, Hari-Hara, Ardhanadeeswara, Sage Bhrigu having a darshan of Lord Shiva & Goddess Parvati etc. This is perhaps the best place in Aihole, but can be easily missed as its some distance away from main road . Avoid visiting it in summer as its too hot. Im amazed that this monument has no charge of ticket. I visited this alone and had a great time, lost in joy!#WorldHeritageSite

GOOD
Very good architectural Temple.
The 6th Century Ravana Phadi is the oldest cave in Aihole historical monuments. Its located one km away from Durga group of monuments. It is said that ravan phadi is one of the first cave built by Chalukyas. There is huge Nataraja and Parvati sculpture inside the cave. There are many other beautiful sculptures you can see on the walls of the cave. Very few people know this place. If you are visiting Aihole dont miss this place.
Nice
One of the best cave temples at aihole... Its a temple village... 100plus temples are in aihole.... Well maintained.... all monuments are nice....Ravanaphadi is one of the oldest rock cut cave temples in Aihole, located less than a kilometer uphill, northeast from the Durga temple complex. The temple dates to the 6th century. The entrance has an eroded fluted column and seated Nandi facing the temple sanctum, with several other small monuments.
One of the earliest attempts of the Chalukyas in building cave temples, which has later been matured at Badami. You can find it on the way to Pattadakal from Aihole just after you cross the Aihole temple complex. Inside of the cave temple has nice stone carved statues of Shiva and other Hindu Gods.
This is the 1st ever rock cut cave temple built by the Chalukyas. This temple was for the experimentation of the cave temples and after knowing they can do these kind of temples, they carved the other four cave temples in Badami. The Chalukyas got the concept of Cave temples after seeing the cave temples of Ajanta, which were date backed to 2nd century BCE to about 480 CE.
Ravana Phadi temple was built in 6th century AD by the Chalukyas in Aihole, Karnataka. Excavated out of a low height mountainous rock, this Shiva cave temple displays stunning relief carvings that portray stories of Lord Shiva, Vishnu, Ganga, and Mahishasurmardini. A Nandi statue and the monolithic pillar at the entrance of the cave, enchant visitors to enter this cave temple.
Its a ancient cave temple dedicated to Lord shiva
Its a small cave temple in Aihole. When I went there, on a Sunday afternoon, there was absolutely no one there. Beautifully sculpted as the other temples in the area.
The rock-cut Hindu temple of Ravana Phadi in Aihole, Karnataka, was made during 550 AD. The temple of Ravana Phadi was once decorated with stunning paintings and artworks, but due to lack of proper preservation only remnants of paintings on ceiling still remains. Aihole, which used to the capital during the rule of Chalukya dynasty, consists of 125 temples, of which, most are rock cut Hindu temples. The Ravana Phadi temple is cut in rock, and Lord Shiva is worshipped in the temple
Another beautiful cave temple in the area. Not very good for photographing as it is very small inside the cave. But, could be visited once to see the architecture. I felt like, it needs attention from archaeology department, as there is a very big and serious crack on the roof of the temple and the roof has come down a bit because of it.
Beautiful Shiva sculpture, as NATARAJA, having ten arms.
"Site is well maintained by ASI and stone carvings are good."
