Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum in Koeln
Description
Very good
I was extremely impressed by the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum and thoroughly enjoyed my 3+ hour visit. All staff were extremely friendly and welcoming from the very start. The various exhibitions were presented very effectively and I very much enjoyed the ability to view exhibits "up close and personal". I personally found many of the stories being told to be very moving and the various elements of interactivity to be very novel and effective.Overall I can say this is one of the best museums I have visited in a long time.
MoreSurprisingly interesting. Exhibits well done with some novel presentation. Some information boards were not well lit or had insufficient contrast between the text and background. These were not easy to read.
MoreA varied and detailed ethnographic museum that is moving with the times and makes it part of the conversation and experience. Absolutely one of my favourites.
MoreLarge collection, I was very interested in how the return of the Benin bronzes is beeing handled. Definitively worth a visit!
MoreThe art and artefacts are gorgeous and thoughtfully displayed. This museum is spectacular.
MoreA world ethnological museum of the highest standard. A well organized narrative around the shared humanity among different cultures in the world.
MoreLittle introspection on how these indigenous artifacts were collected.
Huge collection that is obviously transforming right now from the old colonial gestus towards a display of respect for the cultures. You can still observe the old style in the majority of the displays which sometimes overbear the content a bit. Keep the transformation going. One formal thing: there is no online ticket for your mobile and one cannot pay with credit card. This is very strange we just have had two years of Covid. The security personell is a bit overcautious, sometimes I could not relax.
MoreI met with an employee Mr. Fernandez, he was so kind and thoughtful. I guess he is one of the caretaker/security service, but he knew alot about the museum. The way he spoke sounded so peaceful and knowledgeable! It was very interesting to see so many cultures, religion and learn about history and its time.My husband and myself had a wonderful experience. Very kind employees, that welcomed us with a big smile. Definitely a place to visit and one of the best museum in Cologne.
MoreVery relatable. The exhibition is opening eyes to let me realize the details that I ignored.
MoreThe museum has a very interesting collection, it is very organized and clean and the building is extremally nice. The staff is very agreeable and pleasant.
MoreLikely the most thoughtful and comprehensive meta-consideration of the role of the museum as an institution of culture I have every experienced. The ethics and history of displaying cultural artifacts from various cultures are considered at every turn. The themes by which items are clustered and displayed is also incredibly interesting and intriguing.
MoreWonderful museum. Full of cultural relics from around the world.
Not only just to visit while in Köln but its a way to learn in many ways there.
Very interesting exhibits, well laid out in different themes.
Very large collection, we didnt even have time to see everything! 10/10 would go again
MoreOne of the most immersive and awe inspiring cultural exhibition Ive had the pleasure to experience in recent years. Kudos to the show planners/designers.
MoreGreat building and very comprehensive collection. Very well designed & laid out.
If dont look at the first floor its really interesting ethnographic museum that always try to involve viewer and not just place obj in empty room
MoreThis Museum was on of the best Ive ever been to, both here and in the U.S. While it may lack the immensity of, say, The Met in N.Y.C., it makes up for it in detailed, *extremely* well presented exhibits on culture. IF YOU DONT SPEAK GERMAN then no worries!!! A great deal of the information is presented in English and is all very well written and informative! Its split into two halves, one of which is dedicated to Medieval sculptures and works, the other is worldwide. BOTH are awesome and I would highly, highly recommend the combined ticket. The only thing that needs work is the gift shop: whereas for example Der Dom has *everything* Dom themed, they had relatively generic offerings, which doesnt detract from the experience of course (hence no star lossbut was something in which I was disappointed
MoreThis museum of world cultures focuses on common elements between differing cultures. It attempts to break down the otherness that society has built up that lead to negative prejudice towards people who are not white. The museum attempts different cultures around the world depth in the form of both historicism and modernity for different aspects of humanity. The exhibits are nicely curated and the material well presented.
MoreHave been there during the celebration of Dia de Los Muertos. Was quite impressed. The museum is big and well maintained. There are elevetors and toilets easily accessible for all people. The collection of the cultural heritage of different countries is impressive. Highly recommended.
MoreHad a great time here, every room surprised me with something new. Quiet, clean and very modern, worth the price in 100%
MoreHighly recommend museum but not much to see!
Totally confusing if you don’t speak German well. There is an English audio guide (2€that explains a little about a few things, and a printed list of info about the current temporary exhibition about political present giving. For the most part, the high level intro to each area is translated into English and the title of some of the artefacts. But if you want to learn anything about the objects you’re looking at, forget it. A waste of 9€ for me.
MoreGood cultural tour. Could be more detailed translations. Good collections from around the world. Exhibits are creative and very enjoyable if you are going for a nontraditional museum.
MoreIt is very interesting to see other cultures.
Excellent museum - objects from around the world beautifully displayed and there is a lot of context of how they were stolen and culturally appropriated by the colonizers under the guise of cultural exploration. The museum is thoughtfully laid out with the opportunity to interact with a lot of the exhibits.Allow yourself a half day at the very least and end with an excellent espresso served at the cafe in the lobby area.
MoreThe museum was pretty boring and set up in a very strange way. Almost none of the signs were in English and I couldnt find out if there was an audiotour available. The only great thing about this museum for me was one of the women who worked there and stood in front of the temporary exhibition about faces of people during the colonial times. We had a lovely talk and she made me feel great.
MoreNice museum with many pieces from many different countries (apparently with a focus on South Asia / pacific islands.Unfortunately, most texts are German only (or the title is translated in English, but not the body of the explanation), which decreases the interest of this museum for non native speakers...
MoreMuseum with a lot of exponats.
Very interesting for adults and school children. Big collection of world cultures. Spacious, clean and not expensive at all. It is located in city center and accessible with public transport so you dont have to think about parking. On the ground floor there is also nice caffe and a gift shop.
MoreGood interactive activities, especially for children (who can read). Some unfriendly guards in the exhibits marred our exploration. Good approach to anthropology questions and questions of culture. The temporary Fast Fashion exhibit was sobering. Could have shared more practical ways for people to take action.
MoreWe went to see the Fast Fashion exhibition. First of all it was really expensive. Moreover the exhibition was poorly translated into English, with lots of letters missing to the point that some bits were difficult to read. And some parts of the exhibition were not even translated at all!Poor quality for a high price.
MoreFantastic collection with an easy route to follow. My three kids, 8, 11, 13 years old really enjoyed it. They set the pace and it took them 2 hours to get to the end. Anyone with kids with realise its a miracle.
MoreAmazing museum!! It travels you throughout space and time!! Take time to enjoy the whole of it (at least 1,5 hours)!!
MoreVery rich educational resources, good explanations displayed in an innovative way (interactive books, drawers...).Amazing use of light and space within the exposition and gorgeous collection. An unmissable museum.
MoreGreat exhibition. Odd pricing. I went on a day when the main exhibition was closed and still had to pay full price for the smaller exhibition.
MoreStunning museum - such a hidden gem in Cologne. The museum tackles tough issues like colonialism and its lingering effects, as well as fascinating cultural differences in a hands-on, visual manner. You dont just visit this musuem - you experience it. Right from the moment you enter the exhibit, you are literally welcomed by people from around the world in their own typical style. Was here three hours and couldve spent a few more. Cant recommend it enough.
MoreIts great museum with high interactivity and great vast collection of world cultures. Going to this museum gives you the sense of being an explorer. Althought the museum is not for the faint of heart. Some exhibition in the museum is a bit bone chilling especially the mask and portal section.
MoreVery well curated museum with a plethora of fascinating and beautiful artefacts from all over the world. Could easily spend an entire day exploring it in detail. One of the most interesting museums Ive ever seen, and definitely one of the best in Cologne. Must see!
MoreReally fascinating and well done museum. Certainly worth seeing if you have few days in Cologne.
MoreVery good museum with a great collection of items from all over the world. All have a description and they also have an audio guide in multiple languages. The only thing that would be nice, if All of the descriptions were in both German and English
MoreVery interactive and informative, every exhibit has its own unique atmosphere that encourages you to slow down and take everything in.An interesting and engaging activity for everyone.
MoreAwesome! Great use of light, placement, and technology. This museum presented a viewpoint not often seen in anthropological museums: recognition of past wrongs. The items on display are fantastic.
MoreGreat museum with a surprising exhibition on different cultures around the world. Plenty of interactive exhibits and demonstrations, and very well organised. One of the best museums in cologne for sure. Good for both adults and kids. There are plenty of lockers, free restrooms and underground parking. The museum shop is small but has some things you would not find anywhere else. Plan for at least 2h in the museum, or 3h if you want to take a lot of pictures or are bringing kids who ask a lot of questions.
MoreVery interesting collection from all over the world. The ones you rarely see in museums in Europe.
MoreVery good ethnographic museum with very nuanced and detailed explanation. Would absolutely recommend.
MoreMastercard is apparently too unusual a payment method for this museum. I had no cash, so was turned away.
