Rattlesnake Trailhead - Hiking area in Missoula, United States
There are some really nice trails for mountain biking in this area. I cruised down the fence line trail and it was pretty epic. I would definitely recommend that only intermediate riders and above take that challenge.
Beautiful trail system for hiking, running, or biking.
I really enjoyed this trail and all the raw nature that is experienced on it. After the 1st 3rd of a mile, stay right and hike side by side with the creek. This is where the best hiking is, not the larger semi paved path which is best for bikes. Right after the short cement bridge, take an immediate right and follow the creek 😀
wonderful trails along river and some elevation for great views, saw a grizzly on the trail
Incredible place to hike, run, bike or just st chill and read a book!
Nice trail along the river with opportunities to dip in. I once saw a mama bear and her cubs alongside the trail here!
Get my fill of protein evertime I go hiking here. Just gotta keep your head down.
Awesome place to walk, run, hike or bike. Bring your dogs too.
Nice for a family stroll. Dog friendly except for Dec-Mar. Worth the short drive out of town.
Awesome hiking experience, I cant wait to snowshoe and ski here come the big snow. Lots of biking, hiking, bushwacking, and pathfinding available. Great for every recreational activity you can dream of, except camping, I dont think you can do that here, maybe the other trail? Fun area, easy to get here, loads of parking; which is good once snow season comes, you need all the parking you can get.
Shared mountain bike and hiking trail.
Trails split off everywhere. Rattlesnake is a connector trail for lots of other trails.
A wonderful place to do a long/short morning hike with/without your dog in the woods. They also had bike trails. Stay on a trail or follow the creek. It was very pleasant!
This is a great place to ride. Make sure to download trail forks before so you have offline maps. I recommend riding down fence line! What a blast! Great views and well marked trails.
Awesome State Park. We hiked through here, saw a mama bear and her cub, lots of variety in visual and aural areas. We could visit many times and not go the same way twice. Great park
Beautiful scenery lots of trails for dogs Excellent place for mountain biking Getting out with the family and enjoying the outdoors
The rattlesnake is the easiest way to get into wilderness from Missoula, from the trailhead you can hike bike ski 5 miles to the wilderness area, or head up towards Stuart peak. Lots of old history and 30+ miles of great trails. The creek is a class III whitewater kayak run in spring from the trailhead into town, even better now with the Dam removal. There are at least 3 portages and some sketchy areas that you should scout.
great trail! not many views but a lot of pine forest. trail is well maintained but crosses with other trails so Id recommend using GPS. You have to cross the river in the middle of the trail but there is a small bridge made out of branches if you follow the river against the current for about 30 feet so you dont have to get wet.
Great place to bring dogs. Also has bike trails. It was a bit sunny in the morning but if you go around 5 pm its nice and shady. Lots of deer in the neighborhoods on the way so watch out for them. Bring a camera it has beautiful views. Also has poke stops and gyms around for those that enjoy pokemon go.
Beautiful area in Montana! The trails are well amazing to hike on and perfect for families or even just by yourself like me haha!
Really love this trail and how it changes through the seasons. Very versatile, on any given day you will find hikers, bikers, cross country skiers, families, and runners. Wide trail for multiple use. If you travel far enough there are beautiful camping areas for backpackers. Multiple trails in other directions as well, there is always something new to explore and close enough to Missoula. The river that runs along the trail is just beautiful! Very well maintained as well.
Gorgeous area with several meandering trails of varying difficulty, the main trail being fairly flat and good for calm walks with a view of the creek which runs parallel.
Gorgeous area! Bit steep and a lot of bicyclists on the paths, but wonderful views and a good challenge in some areas for novice to beginning intermediate hikers.
An excellent trailhead for biking, hiking & horse back riding. Very easy to get to from Missoula. Every level of trail you could imagine. There are restrooms at the entrance but the ones on the trail are closed because of COVID19. Worth the stop.
Beautiful! Easy walk, lots of trail options!
Great walk in this winter wonderland. I recommend getting a good drink from the fresh river.
Miles and miles of trails. Many are mountain bike, horse and pet friendly. Unbelievably nice for being so close to city center.
Cool trails to bike or hike
Its very nice, cool. I rode my bike, unfortunately those bike prohibited beyond the parking lot.
This trailhead has a very large parking lot and bathrooms. The first couple of miles are wide and flat with gentle inclines. The trail meanders with the river and has several good swimming spots. Great trail for kids and novice hikers, with more challenging sections splitting off from the main trail.
So many great options. One of my favorite places to bike and hike in Missoula.
Beautiful area! There are tons of different trails of all difficulties. Main trail was nice and wide, with a gradual easy slope for casual hikers. There are many other trails to offer a bit of a challenge. Im from out of town, recommend going earlier in the morning if you want to avoid crowds. Parking lot was pretty empty at 8 am, and overflowing by the time I was done around noon.
A local delight. Wide trails filled with families and bicycles. Trails are flat and in the open sun. Bring water and snacks. Didnt see any wildlife. Parking plentiful. 2 toilets available at the entrance and at about a mile in.
A beautiful area for an easy hike and mountain biking.
Had a visit and a little time to kill. This place is a great place to take a walk and visit mother nature. Quiet a few people cross country skiing. Lots of dog walkers very friendly and beautiful to boot. Can only imagine it in the summer. One of the few open year round.
Easy to get to trailhead and great trails. It can get a bit on the busy side, but if you like the outdoors whether hiking, mountain biking or backpacking this is a great area.
Love this trail! It is very beautiful and my dog loves it too! They require leashes to be on this trail with dogs.
Really beautiful, and right next to a river. It has trails for mountain bikers, horses, and walk/joggers. Has dog clean up bags and restroom facilities, but it doesnt have any hand cleaning stations, so you need to bring your own.
Great for beginner or seasoned veterans. Rattlesnake trails head offers a vast amount of hiking and maybe the best of mountain biking in the region. This is what public land is all about.
Nice easy trail right outside of Missoula.
A nice main trail and plenty of ones that branch off of it. Did not find any rattlesnakes, 5 stars.
Weekend hiker??? This is the place for you. Hike in the mountains and still have a creek to cool down. Dog friendly is always a plus for me
Beautiful area, wildflowers are in bloom. Many trails with diverse landscapes. However, there are bear and moose, know how to handle yourself. Also, bring your own good map. There are many trails and the signage can be confusing.
Beautiful and great clean trail for families and dogs on leash
Trails are well kept. We took the 1.7 mile and my Dad is 81. So you can do it easily. Good time to go and see the snow melting has the Rattlesnake Creek really going!
Its so beautiful up here. There are miles and miles of trails that spread out over a seemingly infinite area. Ive still not explored them all!No dogs in winter, and leashes required otherwise. You may get "lucky" enough to come across a black bear or possibly even a mountain lion. The wilderness is 8 miles in and there is nordic skiing in the winter. Its also not very hilly, so its great for less experienced hikers.
This was a great nice day hike. It was clean no trash anywhere. Nice cuts into so water drains fast. My brother and I really enjoyed this place and will be going back. Hiking or biking this wont disappoint if your looking for a friendly upbeat place for a day trip.
Fantastic hiking in Missoula. Can almost catch a bus here, which makes it unique among wilderness areas. Tends to be mountain bike heavy in the lower parts, absolutely beautiful (and much more solitudebeyond the main trails.
Good sized parking lot. Easy access to large trail network. Popular, but easy enough to find an empty trail. Bears & mountain lion known to frequent area. Despite that, havent heard about any injuries.
This place is a well-kept secret in Montana. Its got something for just about everyone who wants to get outdoors. Ill admit Im more of a MTB trail rider, not a shredder (probably too old for that). Riding up the main corridor to the Franklin Bridge (about seven milesis engaging on many fronts. The scenery is wonderful, and the creek at the bridge is especially scenic. Going to the Wilderness boundary on this road, another six or seven miles from the aforementioned bridge is for those who dont mind an uphill climb on a rocky road. The scenery is worth it, with some awe-inspiring spots. Its popular, but even with the parking lot full and spilling over onto the road, you will not encounter many people because the area has so many trails. Walking, biking, or hiking, its worth the visit.
