Rata Street Loop Track in Upper Hutt
Description
Privilege
Good here.
Beautiful day for a bike ride .
Best walk in the valley
Don’t bring a pram!Great fun track. For younger kids walk to the pine clearing and back - one stream crossing to keep things interesting. Probably 6 or 7 more stream crossings after that if you’re all feeling more adventurous. We did the whole loop with a 2 & 5 year old and it took a couple hours. Love it!
MoreGreat track! Always an interesting experience to walk through. Mostly shaded and damp with a couple of small river crossings. Mostly empty of others. Lots of mushrooms if you look closely.
MoreBeautiful trackDont believe the people who said its not suitable for kids. 6YO had no issues and loved all the crossings. 4YO needed some help but managed and as an adult was easy with the 3rd in a frontpack. It is a beginner tramp, I think the others were expecting a beginner bush walk
MoreDone this walk a bunch of times. Love it.
Youll want proper tramping boots for this track, as there are a lot more stream crossings, tree-root/rock steps, narrow edges, etc than the more popular Wellington district tracks. In Winter/Spring, seems to be extremely muddy + a lot of storm debris to navigate. Not sure its all that well-maintained from about 15min into the walk, onwards.
MoreGood walk for all levels of fitness
A great weekend walk around the loop track, however a bit muddy in places following recent rain.
MoreGreat loop - lots of small stream crossings.
Was great walk.yesterday, dry creek loop trak.
Give it 3 to 4 hours. Lots of crossing of the stream. Dog friendly.Perhaps just waterproof shoes to make it easier.
MoreLove this little loop
Love this twisty track.
Love this loop !

Metlink on our way
MoreTerrible track. Neglected and unsafe. Hutt City Council state "easy walk" but no way is it safe enough for kids. Pull your heads in council and fix it or close it. As a Naenae local its sad to see more money spent in some suburbs then others.
MoreSome part Its too narrow for kids even for adults. Too muddy during winter, idk if its in summer. But we still have a good time. Because they have a lot of creeks/stream it can be quite muddy around there.
MoreGreat walk
Just walked the track last Wednesday it was just cleared and looks amazing plus the view at the top was stunning
MoreGreat 1hr 30 min walk. Very muddy today but there has been some upgrading in places.
MoreNice bush walk. Steep. Lots of stream crossings if you start at lower entrance. Took 1 hour work kids. But they werent going very slowly. So allow some extra time.
MoreI was told it was family friendly, but ive done this track twice both ways and not taken the same track and wandered off the track twice! Its not safe for kids (our kida struggled across the creeks and when sliding down steep hills), its not sign posted and there are multiple trails here and there making it very difficult to know where to go, which to follow, and what is the safest. I did this with a toddler on my back ans a six year old and a friend who did the same. We enjoyed being in nature and ended up sliding down hills with children on our back... It was really not safe! Ive yet to find the actual way to go/actual loop but so far both times had slippery /steep parts unsafe for kids and carrying children.
MoreLOVED IT
The walk was amazing!!!
Excellent bush walk, 3.5 k, the first half climbs up though the bush, crossing the small stream in several places, then opens up with views across the hutt valley, moderately difficult
MoreMake sure you wear water proof/resistant footwear it can be very muddy and wet.
Beautiful place to explore, follow the Creek up the hill. Nice 1 hour trek for a casual walk
MoreGreat views and interesting walk without being a "killer". Track always extremely muddy in spots, so wear appropriate footwear!
MoreLovely track, gullies would be quite slippery after any rain
Great little known track plenty of side tracks to explore
Got about 15 bluies each one the size of a bulls nut
Good loop walk for beginners. We got lost in few places, however you will still end up finding a way to get down from the hill.
MoreGreat walk, forgot how many times cross creek though.
Great walk awesome views
It was a good walk, probably best for more experienced walkers as it is quite difficult in places and the track is not clearly marked.Be prepared to get wet feet as fallen trees have diverted the streams across the track in places. But it is a very beautiful walk.
MoreGood local track
Could be better sign posted
Good walk, quite steep in a few places.. Not good if youre half blind like me LOL. First half is fairly steep and lots of stone / river / narrow parts, second half is a lot more relaxed
MoreI love living nearby this native area.
Keep street clean and safe for community
Great lil walk a couple different paths one needs a bit of work done clearing cutting grass but in all great
MoreI really enjoyed this walk! There were just a few problems, the path itself was a bit tricky to find, even as I was looking at a map, as the signage is quite hidden. There were a couple of moments that I wondered if I was even on the track anymore as there was no signage and parts are quite overgrown and you have to cross a lot of streams. Wouldnt be great for small children or if youre just wanting a leisurely walk. Had to take a few guesses what directions to take when the path forked as there werent any signs to indicate where they led.Apart from that there were beautiful views and it was well shaded most of the walk so good for hot days 🌞
MoreGood little loop. Can also head up to the top of the hill if you head upwards by the little bridge. Its a steep walk up to the top but is well worth it for the great view over the hutt. From the top you can even walk along the ECNZ pylon road.Over to stokes valley (Watch for the sign down it can be hard to spot!)or in the opposite direction along to the top of the Wainuiomata hill
MoreSouthern end is well maintained, northern side is a bit rough when its been wet. Nice streams to see, worth doing at least once. Have done it several times now and captured imagery for streetview in the most recent one.
MoreNot suitable for toddlers!
Was a bit dangerous and slippery on clay was great for the thighs not for kids thou narrow high edges and quite steep in some places
MoreHas you crossing stream quite a few times. Good views at top overlooking Naenae.
MoreOther than falling over in it is enjoyed it .
