Ramen Kid Won - Asian fusion restaurant in Madison, United States
I have been going here for 6 years, I love the shoyu ramen. Always a place I take people who come to visit, the atmosphere is cozy and the food is delicious!
Decided to try this place out on a whim. We were craving ramen. The only thing that brought things down was the fact that they could only really serve noodle dishes when we went (equipment issues). It was understandable but we missed out on trying other items.Food was brought out rather quickly. The decor was nice and we enjoyed the music playing. Gave the feel of a legit ramen shop. Would highly recommend a visit if youre near by.
Their tonkotsu broth is much better than strings’!
Great food, Good prices, nice people!
Arrived at 7:20 pm and was .told that dining in closes at 7:30 and was not served. They told me it was listed on their website as such. It’s not. If you go in around 730 don’t expect to be served
Perfect hole in the wall ramen shop. Arguably better ramen than stringz at more affordable prices. The tonkotsu ramen is fantastic.
Fantastic food in a nice cozy local. Never disappointed when I order here, one of the only places in recent memory where I always finish the entire bowl.
Very tasty food in a very cute place. Our server today was also friendly and helpful!
Food was alright, not good not bad, staff training probably was the issue. Here’s the story goes, i went in to the place the staff was on a phone so no simple greetings as usual, it was alright. I ordered to go a tonkatsu ramen, I had to say it three times just the tonkatsu ramen because he kept asking “not the spicy one right?”, “the regular tonkatsu not the spicy tonkatsu right?”, and I was like okay if you just wanna make sure. Right after I swiped my card and tipped he told me it’ll take about 20 minutes. I’m shocked, told them isn’t this something you should’ve let me know before I ordered it? I asked them if I can get a refund because I was just ordering to go and didn’t expect that waiting time. He then helped the other customers and I asked them again if I can get a refund because I’m not waiting 20 minutes just for one ramen. And he finally made sure of that with their kitchen and told me it’ll just take about 5 minutes.
So many Kara-age! It taste the same as the one I ate in Japan.
i have mixed feelings. the tonkotsu ramen is okay but not one of the bests in madison
This is one of the best Ramen spots in Madison as well as their Japanese Curry, which you can’t really find a decent one anywhere else!
A very casual atmosphere that suits the smaller floor space. The wait for food was short and the food that arrived was hot and delicious!
Absolute trash ordering system. My order got miss twice within a month. 4 Star is deducted due to the wait time and service, otherwise food quality is 5 stars.Pork cutlet curry is great! Ramen is top notch as well. The fact that there is takoyaki is enough for me to choose here. Usually quite busy at dinner time. Sometimes you would have to wait 20min for food.I strongly suggest improve the waiting area so that people wont have to stand the whole time.
I really do love Ramen Kid, I remember going here on either days off of after work to just relax and enjoy the atmosphere while enjoying some nice, high quality ramen. Sure if youve seen my review on Stringz I was a bit taken back by whats probably considered the most important part of their ramen, the base being the broth, for some unholy reason being more oil than broth, that the U.S. Military could declare war on my ramen just to get all of the oil that was separating in my broth left over from too much broth and not enough noodles, which is an unfair gimmick to play on your customers by having an option to add more noodles, when the thibg about ramen is, you gotta have balance. Ramen Kid does this well.Unfortunately due to COVID-19 and the fact that I cannot travel to enjoy them, Im left with the option of being stuck at home to order delivery. And of course if youre like me who has been ordering alot lately due to COVID-19, youve probably noticed a few changes to your favorite places because of it. Some good, some bad. Im not saying my experience was negative per say, but I was kinda concerned because, I get it, its probably best to package the broth and noodles separate, but unfortunately with the noodles being fresh and cooked, the way it should be enjoyed, they got cold, started to clump together and basically have that weird slimy, soggy texture that I really cant describe well. Was hard to break apart when I poured the broth in for consistent noodles and broth. Something more I noticed with the broth unfortunately was the thing ya hate to see, a layer of oil. Now I cant really harp on this, it was a thin layer of oil that more than likely was something separating from the pork belly or the noodles. But you can taste a difference sadly from eating fresh there verses enjoying at home. The oil just siphons away the taste that you should be getting and enjoying and unfortunately, it siphoned my enjoyment over their ramen. I still love them regardless, Ill just have to wait until COVID-19 is under control to return once again for fresh and tasty ramen. But who knows. Alot of restaurants are changing the way they package their food so people can still get that fresh quality. Maybe something will change here that ensures that people get their ramen fresh and peak quality to enjoy like I do.Edit: Tuesday, January 18th, 2022, 6PMSo I really hope Ramen Kid isnt going down to being bad...Ive had quite a bit of their food to know how it tastes. It tasted...not so good. The Kara-age is usually always so flavourful and juicy. This was like the joke about how white people cook chicken with no seasoning, it was still juicy but the flavor was so bland; made me sad really. Usually their spicy broth is a perfect balance of spice that doesnt overpower the flavor of the broth, you can still taste the creamyness while experiencing some heat in perfect harmony. This was just chili spice overpowering it...whats worse is I tried a sip of my fiancés broth that wasnt spicy. It was like miso broth but even that is supposed to taste somewhat creamy, this was just salt and water...Really kinda disappointing considering how much Ive visited here and enjoyed the quality of food. I just hope it was a bad day today, they werent at all busy when I placed my order. Im also afraid theyre getting lazy, cuz they have some weird QR code scan to seat yourself and look at a menu...unless they couldnt print off any more menus. But yeah, even getting serviced by the host was...awkward.Edit: March 8th, 2020, Monday at 5PMYeah, theyve gone downhill. Cheaped out on everything, menus, staff, cups. Got rid of their old chef and replaced the dude with some students who probably dont know their way around a noodle. Staff is very bland and basic, serve you once and forget about you until its time to pay. Dont even bother to check for drinks or how everything is.
We were really impressed with the food here. Boyfriend ordered ramen and loved every part of it. It really hit the spot for him. I had the Gyudon and it was delicious. Will recommend this little place to anyone looking for a great ramen place in the area.
Cute little restaurant but with great vibes. The food was delicious; I ordered the Spicy Tonkatsu Ramen and it was tasty. However I wish it were more spicy but that’s just my personal choice. I love the decorations and the ice cold water.
Ramen was really good but quite oily. Good proportions and fast service
A pretty busy and crowded place. The ramen is good but sort of oily.
Best Authentic Japanese Ramen shop in all of Madison! Great food! Great Service! Great Servers! Overall wonderful experiance!
Seriously the best Ramen place in town. Good prices, good food, good staff. Nothing to complain about. My favorites are the Kara age curry and hakata tonkotsu ramen
There are always two sides to every review. Ramen Kid is one of the absolute best restaurants in Madison. The food is always hot, fresh, and delicious and the owners are the most kind and generous people you will ever meet. If you like anime and amazing food, RK is the place to be. Try the pork cutlet curry; you won’t be disappointed!
My original review from a few years back: The only place in Madison that I have found that has katsu curry like how I find it in Japan. Even the atmosphere is like that of curry places that Ive been to in Japan. I love going there.12/9/2021 edit:Figured I might as well add to my review as it has been a while! I actually made a habit of going to Ramen Kid every week until the pandemic threw a wrench into things! I am still obsessed with their curry. Ive had their kara-age too and its really good, not to mention a lot of food for the price you pay!The staff have always been great to me and people who I have gone there with, and while it can sometimes take a while to get my food after I order, thats simply because they get so busy. The last few times I arrived shortly before they even opened for the day, there was already a line of people waiting. Tables fill up fast and they fill tons of online orders at the same time too. The staff works so incredibly hard. I also really appreciate that they do enforce the local mask mandate for those not sitting down and eating. If youre concerned about COVID but still want to try their food, youll be fine ordering/picking up take-out from them.
One of our favorites, delicious Ramen, refreshing ice cold Japanese beer and super friendly and prompt staff.
Are you serious ?! A food delivery man has come to your place and you do not let him into the toilet out of need! You need to be more tolerant of people in the service sector, after all, he is driving all day, and you refused his need to go out of necessity. I looked at it from the outside, to be honest, it touched me. be polite guys. In terms of food, everything is fine. peace for everyone
Super delish! Great ramen spot for sure and the folks behind the counter are great. Thanks for the extra egg for the kid!!! Love whomever did that!!!
Big portions and tasty pork katsu curry. 2 cutlets per dish in our order. Rice and cutlet came in a different container than the curry which is prevented soggy pork.
Ramen kid has some of the best ramen weve ever had. We live about an hour and a half away and frequently visit our friend in Madison just so we have an excuse to come here. I would highly recommend giving it a try! The staff are all super friendly and the restaurant is cozy and we love the decorations!
This place is amazing! Their takoyaki tastes just like the street vendors in Japan! It was so delicious! I had their tonkotsu ramen and my husband had the spicey tonkotsu ramen. Both were amazing! The pork was cooked perfectly and the broth was flavorful! The spicy ramen was not too hot to where you couldnt eat it but still had a kick! The waitress was sweet and the cook really knows what he is doing! The price was super reasonable too! We will totally come back!
This ramen cured my depression and made me reconsider my entire life. In all seriousness, it is the best ramen I’ve ever had, and it was a very fast and friendly place!
Nice warm, not too hot, tasty ramen. Its the perfect ramen for someone whos never had it before. The tonkotsu is my favorite so far! I frequent here whenever Im in the area and hungry
Love the anime decor. Restaurant and restroom are clean. I ordered Pork cutlet curry, my husband had a Spicy Tonkatsu, both were amazingly delicious! The soup for the tonkatsu wasnt warm enough though and we asked it to be heated some more and although hesitant because it might affect the noodles texture, they gave in to our request and that is why I am not giving them less than 5 stars
Great little ramen place, food is fantastic, food didnt take long to get either and it was really well prepared. Definitely a great place to go to
Nice and warm atmosphere! Fairly new to ramen but the warm subtle flavor of the Tonkatsu and Spicy Tonkatsu ramen was absolutely well done a long with the very nice servers! Think about Ramen Kid all the time whenever I visit Madison from Minnesota! This is my Fourth time eating there so they definitely have my support!
We only went here because Strings ended up being closed for dine-in at the time. Ramen kid was kinda small and disorderly, but we really wanted ramen so whatever. Thier food totally blew my expectations out of the water. Perfectly crisp takoyaki, well balanced ramen broth, and amazing curry rice. 10/10 this is our new ramen place.
Decided to stop by during my bus layover. For the price you get generous portions! The scenery is welcoming and unique, their service is fast and the food is delicious, do wish their tonkatsu had more vegitables mixed in though. Definitely recommend.
We had Shio Ramen & Spicy Tonkatsu Ramen and finished them all, so good, perfect for a cold & windy evening here in MadCity. Yes, the waitress almost forgot about us bcs the place was busy; she was apologetic about it, but overall, we enjoyed our evening here at Ramen Kid Won. And the prices reasonable, too. Also, 10% discount if you pay cash👍
We tried to eat here a couple of times before we were able to get in during a lunch hour. We had stopped by a couple of times, but this place is small and has limited seating. It fills up pretty quickly. With a packed restaurant, we were afraid that we would not have enough time to sit down and eat during a lunch hour. We went a little earlier than normal and found ourselves getting a seat pretty quickly and our orders in to the kitchen before the lunch rush hit. The place filled up in about 30 minutes from the time we entered the doors.I ordered the spicy tonkotsu. I wasnt super impressed from the start. There was quite a bit of meat oil floating on the soup. I had to ladle quite a bit off the top before eating. It was not spicy either. The two pork pieces on top were solid chewy fat and were not edible. Ive had ramen elsewhere where they cook this pork a bit to brown it and caramelize the fat. I have a feeling that this pork could have been prepared a different way and may have been really good to eat. The egg was not a 6 minute egg and they only gave us one half. The noodles were better than your 10 for a dollar packs of college ramen noodles", but they were not homemade. There wasnt a lot of noodles in the bowl either. I wasnt crazy hungry when I entered the restaurant, but I was able to polish off the bowl of noodles and was actually able to eat more. This is rare for me at a ramen shop. I was so disappointed in the bowl overall. I was really hoping for better food as there are crowds of people at this place often.
Unpretentious Ramen place. Casual, quick, and really excellent Ramen. The Spicy Tonkotsu (thicker/heavier pork soup with spicy ground pork misohad just the right amount of bite and the pork was generous and of decent quality. Noodles were perfect. Really reasonable prices, but mind you, Im from D.C.
It’s the most right Japanese flavor in Madison!
Not traditional ramen but still tasty. No seaweed and the egg is hard boiled, not soft or marinated. Floors are so dirty that theyre sticky, not sure how health codes allow this, makes me wonder about the kitchen. Service was also poor. Will not be back :(
AMAZING! For my first ramen experience, it was very good. The staff was very friendly, and helped me reserve a table for 10 ahead of time. (We went in cosplay, it was very fun.)
Low quality and too expensive. We ordered noodles with fried tofu, mushroom, and veggies for lunch. However, I noticed there were no tofu in the bowl. So I asked them and they said sorry we dont have tofu. It is just unbelievable that they do not inform their customers just because not anyone check if all the ingredients mentioned in the menu are actually in the food or not. Also Prices are very high for the quality of food that you actually get.
If not for the bad service, this place would have gotten three stars.I do want to say that I am extremely picky about my ramen, more so than most people, so please dont be surprised if I "complain" about something really small. Take this review with a grain of salt.Lets get the service out of the way. It was terrible. We were greeted with a blank expression, led to our tables, and the menus were plopped down before us without a word. When we went it was not too busy, so I was extremely surprised when I saw the waitress walking around the restaurant asking whod ordered the Karaage until she came to our table. There were only three other tables occupied. The Karaage was good, but not great. It was too fried and I would have liked for the meat to be more juicy.I was quite disappointed with the ramen for a couple of reasons. Starting with the smallest reason, the egg. To me, it makes a difference when the egg is not half cooked. Wont really go into detail, but that was a minus for me. Lets get to the broth. I ordered a Yuzu Shio ramen. From personal experience, Yuzu has a unique and wonderful aroma that brings a unique flavor to the food. That is what I was expecting from this ramen, but I got nothing of that. There was a barely a hint of Yuzu and since shio ramen has a lighter flavor than the other broths, it just gave off the impression of being bland. As for the noodles, they were quite good. I did enjoy that.
YES. I really enjoy this place. I have only been once but I found that the ramen was reasonably priced. And it was delicious. The egg was not really poached. It was more hard boiled than anything. There were plenty of noodles and a decent amount of pork belly. Was it the best ramen ever? No, but it was still pretty delicious. I will definitely be going back there. Hopefully this time the egg will be poached. Even if it isnt the ramen is good enough and priced okay enough to keep me coming back.
Vegetarian review (comments only about the tofu shio and miso ramen). The staff are nice and service is good. When it first opened I had a wonderful experience in this restaurant. The tofu was delicious and the ramen was amazing. However...as time went on I noticed that the vegetarian ramen was changing. It is now very very bland, they give you less tofu and the vegetables are not as good. I noticed the tofu is not cooked the same (instead of crispy breading it now has almost no breading? Is it just thrown on top? Its nasty). Please go back to being good (are you trying to be cheap? are you having money troubles? is that why the ramen got so bad?)....
The restaurant seems sticky/ dirty and the menus are just pieces of paper that are quite filthy. However, this is some of the best ramen I’ve had and I will pick this spot any day. I recommend the tonkotsu- absolutely delicious! They got rid of some good appetizers, but hopefully they will come back.
Good quick lunch spot. A little small, so it could get crowded. Spicy pork tonkotsu ramen was delicious and the meal size was healthy but not immense. Great spot to check out close to campus.
Their service has drastically improved, and they have some of the best ramen in Madison, and probably Wisconsin. It also trumps some of the ramen I got in Seattle.
Ramen is solid but the service has always been meh to poor. Sometimes things are not quite cooked all the way too... A recurring issue. That said I still like their ramen and will go back.... They are just rough around the edges.
