Raíces - Puerto Rican restaurant in San Juan, Puerto Rico
It should be 0. No respect to guest. Visit San Juan? Dont go here. Staff Shortage..My two 1st here..1Where Entrees was served before Appetizers2Where I felt proud to give $0 tip
This place is perfect. Drinks, Food and waitstaff were all 5+ stars. Go hungry because the portions are huge. Really too many things good about this place to list. The only downside I guess is that we didnt have any room for desserts. Piña Colada was excellent also had a black mule which is now my new favorite drink. Coral was our wait person. She was 100%. Definitely recommend
Nice and popular spot in el viejo san juan! Beautifully themed. Prices are up there but I enjoyed the food. Not as flavorful compared to other places but i dont blame them, seems like they play it safe since so many tourists arent used to the islands heavy sazon😊. The colossal shrimps in the tornado plate were amazing!! Overall good experience.
Place was close to full when we got there at 3pm we didnt have to wait for a table got service right away we got Mofongo churrasko and longaniza parrillera it was good traditional food our server Bryan was really attentive the drinks where phenomenal we had a mojito de coco and piña colada definitely coming back.
This is one of the best places to eat Mofongo in Puerto Rico. They are delicious. Seafood, chicken, beef or pork. It doesnt matter. Wow!
I was very disappointed at the quality of service and quality of food that was offered at this establishment. It took atleast 45 minutes to place an order and wait for the food. Once the food was served it was cold. They gave us the food but no utensils which took forever. Overall it wasn’t what I expected. If I’m going off my experience tonight I would never recommend this place. Not worth the wait. Only thing I like was the prices not bad for everything we ordered.
Very authentic restaurant. The food and drinks were delicious. My complaints are the floor and tables were greasy and the brownie didn’t taste like brownie it was like a cake.
Love the food been every time I come to Puerto Rico it’s definitely a must! Wait times can get a little crazy but that’s just because they’re so damn good. Wonderful Staff, Amazing food, and a Great atmosphere to eat and enjoy Viejo San Juan.
Food was good! Nice atmosphere but it seems a bit of tourist trap! We had some people tell us the place was good, others say its not where the locals eat! Overall not a bad restaurant
The worst experience in Puerto Rico! The woman who received us was very unpolite. Then we put the name on the list, they call us and make us wait more than 15 minutes in the street until they made the table ready. Then, we ordered and waited for more than 55 minutes for the appetizers. When we wanted to cancel the order after more than one hour of waiting they brought us the appetizer (I include photos), super oily and super bad fried. We canceled the rest and ran out of this restaurant. Really full and overbooking, still dont understand why!!
Just stopped by here for dinner. Every place in the area was packed because they had 3 cruise ships docked. Since it was just me the host got me in just a few minutes. Other people were waiting for about 30 minutes or more. The waitress took great care of me by making a couple recommendations because they were out of one item I wanted. I ended up ordering the Fried Cheese which was really good. For an entree I ordered the Stuffed Chicked which was delicious. If you have time its definitely worth the wait.
We went with a very large group for a birthday. Everything we ordered was delicious. The server was quick and efficient for us having such a large group. The Chuleta Kan Kan is an absolute must, it took me 2 days to finish it!
This food is amazing! The mofongo was savory and packed full of flavor. Service was quick and everyone was so nice to me and my party of 8!! 100% worth the wait! If you come in ask for Angelyn!
The empanada was delicious! As well as my main course. Food was awesome! Well worth the long wait times for a table.
This restaurant was our choice right off the plane. Located in San Juan by the water. The mofongo was good but the pork was absolutely delicious. Tender meat and crunchy skin. The portion is humungous. Like its big enough for two people. There was a wait to be seated but we opted to sit at the bar. Nice service and staff and great drinks. The dish with shrimp, beef and octopus was also amazing. The octopus was cooked just right not tough and chewy but tender and delicious. Great spot.
This is a good place for lunch and the price is reasonable (around $30/person including drinks)【KanKan Pork Chop】flavored pork chop with crispy pork skin ( the skin is a little bit over cooked so makes it hard to cut). The portion size is large, should be able to fit 1.5 people. Would recommend order the steamed vegetable as side to balance the oily pork.【Grouper Fish Filet】we planned to order fish taco, which is out of stock right now. The fish filet with garlic sauce is also delicious. They do have other fish options like snapper and salmon if you don’t like grouper.
Went in a party of 5. Portions are sizable and prices modest. Waited a bit for service to satft, took about 30 minutes to get the food. The food is delicious. I ordered two "House Specialites" because I couldnt decide what the get, not knowing how huge the kan kan pork chop would be! I added salt to fit my taste, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. The paella was anything but dry and full of flavor. My friend got the piña colada and said it was one of the best ones he tried. The bacalaitos were the best ones I tried in Puerto Rico! I will recommend this place to friends visiting.
Our first time here, it was very busy, food took a bit to come out, everything was room temperature when it got to us, food was good, I expected a little more, being in Puerto Rico, my first time visiting. I might give it a second chance, lets see.
Definitely delicious Puerto Rican food and good drinks at this place, atmosphere is good the wait is a little long on the weekend but its worth it. I recommend it. Service was a little slow and not consistent but overall I had a good time and really enjoyed my food also good price not an arm and a leg like other overrated restaurants.
It took almost an hour and half to get our food and Im sure its only because I asked how long it would take to the waitress she suddenly remembered my table. The food was cold when it got to us and the salad was sad old and wilted Im sure it was cut a day prior. It also didnt have any dressing. The cold food that was supposed to be hot didnt have much flavor. The only reason its getting 2 stars is because the appetizer alcapurrias we ordered were pretty tastey. A side from that its kind of gross and too busy for the high cost of the low quality food.
Amazing service and great traditional Puerto Rican food! Our server Angel was so nice and provided excellent service! We loved the food— delicious flavor and amazing quality, and so many dishes to choose from!
What can I say other than if you are in old San Juan it would be a shame not to have their food. We came here a whopping 3 times in 6 days and stayed in old San Juan the first night, Luquillo, Aibonito, and Cabo Rojo and of all the places we stayed this food was most memorable. The service is amazing and super friendly (love the traditional garb they are inEnglish and Spanish speaking, there will be times you’ll have to wait to be seated but it’s well worth its wait this I can surely promise you and the plethora of reviews speaks on this. The alcapurria, the queso frito, the bistec enceballados, the chicharron de pollo, the kan kan pork chop (their specialtythe pina colada all absolute hits here. The rice and beans in itself can be had alone and you’ll enjoy it. Don’t visit San Juan and miss out on this truly ethnic cuisine. Enough said!
The food was amazing. I dont like how loud it was there but I guess its a family restaurant. The waiter was awsome the place was really clean and the bathroom was clean. The frozen drink was awesome but the drink in the tin can was nasty the mint will go in ur mouth while u drank your drink and it taste just like juice
Raíces was one of the recommended restaurants in Puerto Rico! They serve the local cuisine and I really enjoyed the setting of the restaurant! The murals, paintings and decor were a homage to Puerto Rican heritage. I loved that the wait staff - men and women - were dressed so handsomely and beautifully! They’ve a lot of dishes on their menu! Being a vegetarian in a place where the local cuisine is predominantly meat- & seafood- based is hard! But, there were 2 or 3 options on the menu - which is good enough for me! I tried the vegetable mofongo and the plantain soup. I liked both, just didn’t love either of them. I have to say, the plantain soup was very interesting - salty and garlicky! My friends enjoyed their cod fritters. However, they didn’t love their shrimp.Overall, I’d still recommend this place for the experience of it!
The food was ehh. The service was slow. We ordered the Seafood Paella and it had imitation crab meat and consisted of the frozen seafood mix you buy at a local supermarket. We asked for hot sauce and they gave us sriracha (I love sriracha but it isn’t traditional Puerto Rican hot sauce). Someone in our group ordered white rice and beans but there were no beans just a cup of the gravy. The mofongo was decent. The restaurant has nice decor and friendly staff but it doesn’t capture authentic Puerto Rican flavors.
We were given this recommendation from a woman at one of the shops and she was right! The food here and drinks were absolutely delicious! The servers were dressed in traditional Old San Juan attire. Definitely a must if you want Puerto Rican food at its finest!
The inside was so cold! It made for a very uncomfortable dinner. The food arrived quickly, but thats about the only good thing to say about it.The red snapper was overcooked and lacked any flavor, besides salt. The veggies were crunchy. After waiting for an hour and half, it was a disappointment. The server was great and I appreciated his help.
Raices so far has been a mixed experience. Went here back in January and the experience was fantastic. The monfongo was amazing so much so that I couldn’t wait to go back and I don’t usually like monfongo, the server was wonderful, and food service was a good speed. We visited a few days ago and it was an opposite experience. The monfongo was dry and flavorless, service was insanely slow for lunch service, and the general consensus at the table was eh. It was such a disappointment from our first experience and was a real let down while entertaining friends. Might go back as a tie breaker to see if maybe it was an off day but I wouldn’t consider it a go to place after this experience. Picture is a combo of the paella which was pretty yummy, monfongo, and the octopus salad, which was good on the first experience and not so much on the second. I will say that the drinks are delicious here and pretty strong, was feeling the warm and fuzzies after a mojito haha
Good flavor however, it was about room temperature when I got it. Would’ve probably been better hot. The mofongo was slightly expensive for the 6 pieces of steak (very fatty). I came on a Tuesday about 7:20ish and wait was 45min. The people after us were told 1hr- 1:30hr wait. It was good but not enough for an hour+ wait.
I saw a line every night outside of here so I went in to see what all the fuss was about. The inside decor of the restaurant is probably a hit with kids. Service was prompt and friendly. We got the seafood risotto for two and were shocked by the huge portion! We definitely did not leave hungry and it tasted OK. Also got the queso fritto which wasn’t anything special.
Great dining experience. Our server Hector was very kind and made it a point to make sure we knew what each plate was and what it brought. Mojitos were great and chuleta can can were good and crunchy. Mofongo for my pallet was too salty but everything else was good. Would come back to try other dishes
With out a doubt 5 stars! Its rare a restaurant get 5 from me. The wait was about 1-1/2 hours, which was fine cause we came during a very busy time. Food was too notch 👌. Mofongo with steak was perfect 🤤. The piña coladas are so good. Kan Kan pork chop was a bit dry in parts but still very good. We tried Barrachina and this is by far better! Service was amazing. To top it all off, they gave us a bag and plastic utensils along with the to go box. Just awesome!
Elevated Puerto Rican food is what you’ll find here. Had an amazing mofongo experience, top two mofongo meals I had on the island. Get it with chicken steak and shrimp, you won’t regret it. Whatever is that cheese sauce they out poured on top of it, get it, it’s actual heaven. Get yourself a pina colada as well - and you’ll really be in for a treat!
Went here to meet up with family. We had a great time and the Chuleta Khan Khan was delicious. Appetizers were yummy, we were seated quickly and we were able to have our double stroller accommodated so we could eat inside. My family has been coming to this and the other locations. We will continue to when we return to visit.
This place didnt meet the hype. Service was extremely slow. Our food was mediocre. I got the stuffed avocado. While the avocado itself was good, the chicken was not. It supposedly came with cheese sauce but it didnt. My husband got a giant fried pork chop which he liked. We were charged for water. The plantain basket appetizer was decent.
Food and service on point. We ordered for appetizers sausage, tostones and fried cheese and it was delicious. Their piña colada was very good too. All entrées were delicious.
The food was absolutely amazing. I dont eat fish often but I decided to try it and it was perfect. So well seasoned, like I knew it would be, and the waiters were wonderful. Definitely worth the money! I will be back for that fish again. I got a mojito as well and it was perfect and will get you drunk ❤
I did read reviews before I come here , and I have to tell you that pictures looks good but it doesnt taste well. Proportions of meat are very. I couldnt find my octopus in my dish. Beef , chicken and shrimps I found by not octopus. Drink which I ordered was good.
We had a last minute booking at this restaurant but it was great! They delicious puertorican food and amazing service! I 10/10 recommend it!For COVID concerns employees wear masks and they make sure you get hand sanitizer before entering the establishment.
We came late and the service was still good.Ordered the plaintain soup which is not pictured and it was yummy- tasted like lentil soup but had more texture . The cod fritters were soft and melted when eaten with a nice little sweet sauce on top. Plaintains were fried plaintains- can’t mess this up. The mofongo pollo was amazinggg per my husband. It was a solid entrée. Very filling.
Stopped in while we docked off our cruise here in 2018. Cute little restaurant with outdoor seating as well. Absolutely delish and the best is that it’s authentic.
Stopped here with a group of folks based upon a recommendation from someone I ran into in the states. I enjoyed my meal some of the folks in my group found some of their food to be a little dry. We had a fairly large group of 16 that they were able to seat relatively quickly. Overall I had a good experience and if youre in the area stop in and have some dinner or lunch I think you will be pleased at the chance to eat here.
Good to try out these authentic Puerto Rico food! The kan kan (crispy pork chopsare savory but very oily, and the steak mofongo is way more than medium. Red snapper is less delicious than the mango seasoned salad. :/ Of course the pina colada is very tasty! Plus I love the vibe of this restaurant.
Pina coladas here are delicious. So smooth and great coconut flavour. The mini bacalaitos were some of the best weve had all trip. Small, very crunchy, great flavor! The sorullos could be more crunchy but they had a good corn flavor. We didnt really like the cod fish ball croquettes. They were a bit too creamy and soft with a guava sauce too sweet for our liking. We came in on a Wednesday at 3pm and originally they said it may be a 30min wait but then were able to seat us almost immediately. Unfortunately a lot of things on the menu werent available to order. Something about kitchen staff not here/open. (No asapaos or stuffed avocados, two things we wanted to try). I dont know if I would want to wait a long time to eat here but for an afternoon snack it wasnt bad. Nice decor and ambience too.
Call ahead and make a reservation or you’ll have to place yourself in a list. The wait is usually between 30 minutes to an hour. Definitely worth the wait. Great atmosphere and food, a must place to eat when you visit San Juan. The drinks and food is delicious. Mofongo is the staple food here so try that if you want traditional Puerto Rican food. Stuffed avocado menu is delicious, they literally have a humongous avocado that had your choice of meat in it. Be patient the food does take awhile to make. If you like crabs and spicy things definitely order plantains with spicy crabs, that was my favorite.
Food was absolutely amazing. 4 stars because it took quite a while for our waiter to greet us after wed been sat. Once he did, everything went smoothly. The food also took a while, but our server was attentive so all was well.
This place was recommended by a friend. The wait staff was not very welcoming and seemed hurried although the restaurant was not crowded. They were out of empanadas although it was only lunchtime. They were also out of another item that escapes me at the moment. We did have the cod fish fritters which were very good. The stuffed avocado looked amazing but lacked flavor. I was served the shrimp mofongo when I very clearly ordered the chicken. I think the server was just not paying attention since they were short on so many items. I finally got my food and it was tasty. I would give it a second try. Clearly they were having a bit of an off day.
Took ages to get the food. We ordered “tornado” and got it with regular mash potatoes and not the mofongo. Food was cold but did taste good . We didn’t get some of the items we ordered and we had to ask them to take it off the bill
This restaurant is traditional Puerto Rican food. It is right across from a parking garage for convenience. The drinks were excellent and all the meals were amazing. We ended up getting four desserts and sharing the table. We all left very satisfied with the thought that we would be back!
Felt like it took forever to get our food but once we got it, it seemed worth the wait! Very flavorful and filling!Had a big serving of the beef mofongo which we really enjoyed and the sauce on the chicken was especially good. The restaurant is clearly very popular and located in the heart of Old San Juan.
