RSPB Scotland Marwick Head nature reserve - Nature reserve in Kirkwall, United Kingdom
RSPB Scotland Marwick Head nature reserve in Kirkwall
Description
Privilege
Small carpark that has paths going up to the monument and towards the South. Path was clear but a bit rough going in places but that is only to be expected. Monument has all the names of the dead from the Hampshire and the sheer numbers made this a stunning place where the terror of the event felt more real. There is a nice circular walk about 2.5 miles so you dont have to walk back the same way
MoreAwesome place , bring binoculars
Stood on the shoreline and watched a pod of Orcas on a hunt. Amazing
Saw a Peregrine Falcon chasing an Artic Skua close up ! that was our wow moment very windy today but would go back
MoreGreat place to see birds and walk to Kitcheners Mamorial.
Small car park but great place to visit to see sea birds.
Wonderful fishing huts and mooch along rocky waters edge exploring under water creaturesPicnic and peace birds to watch nature at its best. Xx
MoreManaged to do the walk which is no mean feat as we are both elderly. It was well worth when we got there seeing nesting birds in the rock face, we had a lovely day.
MoreThis place is BEAUTIFUL! About a 20 minute walk along the cliffs up to the monument, moderate intensity - if you are reasonably fit, no problem at all. Unreal scenery
MoreA walk on the beach before climbing up the cliffs. Need a better camera to capture the bids but amazing to see them.
MoreVery scenic
Very good
Theres an excellent walk up to the Tower and great views.
good place for bird watching with a cabin prepared to observe them. Dont forget to bring binoculars or a long-range zoom lens. you can also see part of the island from the viewpoint.
MoreGreat walk nice views
Stunning views and an important memorial on the head to those lost on the hms Hampshire
MoreGreat views and well maintained walk. Excellent.
Saw puffins 🤗😍🤗😍Made my trip😁
Very small carpark
Stunning location for a walk, small parking area
Very stormy so didn’t see many birds. Good walk and very dramatic waves crashing into the cliffs. Looked great.
Morei could not find or see any reserve there, just a smelly bay and private pastures with cows
MoreBeautiful little part of the world. About 5/6 spaces in the car park which is right on the sea front. Two lovely walks right out of the car park either north or south. Great views out across the bay and apparently there is a chance to see whales from here (although we didnt see any ourselves). A good, quiet place to camp for the night if you are in a self contained van.
MoreWe were going to see birds but didnt see much. The rocks carved by sea , incredible to see. We had a really good time.
MoreNice place, stunning views and lots of birdlife to watch.
What a great view! ...just before you reach the monument. ...and so many sea birds.
MoreBeautiful walks amongst spectacular scenery.
A great wild place, open access so no need for membership or anything else. No facilities except a small parking area at the side of the road. A long walk to where the cliffs are. Good and worth the walk and climb.
MoreIf you like cliff walking then this is a lovely circular walk. I didnt see many sea birds on this walk.
MoreIf you love wildlife, you will love Marwick.
The walk to the Kitchner memorial is worth the effort.
Good location for walking and bird watching. Two walks available. One along the shore to the Fishermans Huts and the other a cliff top walk to Kitcheners Memorial. Car Park available, but no toilet facilities.
MoreLovely place, no facilities beyond a carpark. Lots of nice sea birds and a great place to walk on a nice day
MoreStunning cliff views of nesting birds, plus views South to the Old Man of Hoy. Not as steep as wed expected. Some quite scary cliff edges.
MoreReally interesting, lots of seabirds and the fishermans huts were great, really good shelter as it was raining so hard!
MoreBeautiful place
Nice walks, great views.
Fantastic, hill climbing and scenery all round. Wonderful
Great views of the cliffs and out to sea
Beautiful place to visit.amazing views.
Very nice location! Impresive landscape!
Great walk, fantastic views
Great place to visit!
Nice place for country walks and a few nice beaches in area.
Today, in the sunshine and light breeze, it would be 6 stars! Beautiful, if poingnant, area (Sinking of HMS Hampshire in WW1).
MoreA lovely coastal walk up to the monument/memorial.
Beautiful walks around here, kitcheners memorial, the beach and the fishermens huts are all fantastic. well worth a visit on a nice day.
MoreAmazing sea cliff walk in a bird haven, shame it isnt mentioned in any guidebooks as it has spectacular views and is a great way to not only visit the tower but to see the impressive cliffs.
MoreStunning scenery, Marwick Head and Memorial on your right as you head towards the bay. Park in the car park and take the footpath on the left to the old fishermens huts. Keep a close eye on young children as it is along the top of the cliff. Well worth the walk, about half a mile or so.
MoreThe most spectacular thing about this area is the view. Simply amazing views of the coast as you walk along the cliff tops, with the Old Man of Hoy visible at one end and a lighthouse at the top of a cliff at the other. This is just a 5-min drive from the Brough of Birsay, so its a nice thing to do after crossing over the Brough. To get there, just follow the signs to the Kitchener Memorial (currently covered in scaffolding), and when you get up to the top of the hill (an easy 10-min walk), youll be entering the Reserve and can immediately start enjoying the view...
