Tirana, Albania, Bajram Curri
Opened in 1988 as the Enver Hoxha Museum, this large pyramidal structure is now a conference center.
As a fan of brutalism, I really like the look of the pyramid. It is currently being renovated.
I appreciate that they are reconstructing it, but the main, totalitarian concept behind the building is something I reject
Currently being reconstructed. A once ghost building loitering in the center of Tirana with its ugliness will be reconstructed to be a youth center by the Albanian branch of a well known Armenian Youth Educational Center, TUMO. Nice to hear the good news!
Currently being renovated and ruined with modern architecture.
I had to throw a glimpse into this famous or infamous pyramid. It is under reconstruction at the moment.
MVRDVs design will see this brutalist monument in the heart of Albania’s capital city, once the showpiece of Communist dictator Enver Hoxha, dramatically renovated. The concrete structure will be reused, the atrium and its surroundings greened and opened, and a small village of cafes, studios, workshops, and classrooms – where Albanian youth will learn various technology subjects for free – will permeate the site, both inside and outside the pyramid itself. The Pyramid is thus expected to become a new hub for Tiranas cultural life and a carrier for the new generation.
Currently being renovated, cant get a clear look of it at the moment. But from far it looks great!
Its closed. Fenced off, and the reason it gets 3 stars instead of one or two is because the policeman working there was professional and helpful in explaining to me that it would be closed one or two years. On the other hand, the parking attendant or Security guard at the radio station was unhelpful, rude, and just plain useless. I should have continued pass him to the building for a picture. Not that I would.
Difficult to find a communist building/monument that isnt ugly. :)This one definitely is but what is more frustrating is that they have not done anything to maintain it, build a museum inside or have at least an explanation outside of it. If you dont have a guide or dont google, you have no clue what you are standing in front of.
Got to give it 5 stars for weirdnessAlso known as Hoxa’s Pyramid and designated by his daughter, the structure is said to be originally destined as a mausoleum for the late dictator. Instead, the not so esthetically concrete pyramid seems to be used as informal housing.
Place is destroyed. I don’t know why they don’t fix it back up and use it for something. Hotel, museum something. What a shame.
The Pyramid of Tirana may be an ugly building, but it serves a social purpose. Many of Tiranas youth use it as a meeting ground. Scaling its slippery side has become a challenge for some. It will be repurposed at one point or another in the future. At the back of the building, there is a space that is used as a studio for TV programs, such as the Albanian version of The Voice.
Waste of time, really. Just a glance from a far will do. Cant come closer now anyway since its all fenced off
Don’t expect a pristine, shiny looking sight. The building is in a derelict state and you can’t go inside - you can only have a look through the broken parts of windows. However, this place is definitely worth visiting when you’re in Tirana. It will definitely give you an insight into the communist part of Albanian history.
Nothing worth seeing now, all fenced off and hazardous in places. On a plus, theres some great restaurants close by.
You can break inside pretty easily so you can make some exploration around. I was so scared because I thought I found a corpse but it ended being just a piece of plastic
Seeing this Pyramide was realy amazing, it is an interesting part of the communistic history of the country. It was build from 1986 till 1988 as a memoroal-museem for Enver Hoxha, after 1990 it was used as a convention center, but now these days... it is sadly only a ruin left... :-(
An interesting piece of Albanian history and one of several abandoned places that are worth exploring. It is easy to enter and many people do, but watch your step when you walk around, as the place is in disrepair. You can climb some stairs to see the upper floors or go to the basement, but again, be careful where you step. Also, it seems that some people (probably homelessare staying there at night, so youll encounter some trash and waste.
It’s in the heart of the city and a sight to be seen. Unfortunately it’s closed off with the use of a fence but there is a small opening. I asked police officers if it was okay if I run up the pyramid and they said “K, no problem”!. So that’s exactly what I did! FYI - it’s easiest to run down :)
You cant climb at the top anymore since its under construction, but the new project for it is truly fantastic. Its not going to be just a useless brutalist piece of concrete anymore.
Don’t bother at all.. just an ugly lump of concrete at this point.. all fenced in today, with a guy in watch.. not worth the effort
The pyramid today in a ruind building that stil shows the old regiem mega projects ,like the bunkers that were all over Albania.
Absolutely horrible thing in the middle of the city. I do not understand why they still keep it. Looks like abandoned toilet, ugly. Skip this place, nothing much to see really.
It has been made a little bit dirty, because of some vandals, but still this is a very iconic place in the city of Tirana. It has a story behind it, its quite an old building and seems interesting or attractive for the tourists eyes.
This is fenced off likely because it look like it could collapse at any moment. It is not worth going out of your way but it is centrally located.
I visited today (April 2019and they are in the process of blocking it off. Fence encompasses the entire front side, working around each side. The back is still open but it appears they plan to circle the whole building. Very quirky architecture and sad to see it in such disrepair. Hopefully someone is getting ready to do an update!
Interesting building in brutalist style from Communist times, former Enver Hoxha Museum. When built, the Pyramid was said to be the most expensive individual structure ever constructed in Albania. Unfortunately, it is unused and dilapidated.
Im still confused by why it is damaged and trashed. It is also not that safe to climb even though we climbed it.
Worth seeing just so you get a sense of how disrespected Enver Hoxha is. The dictator who shut this country off from the world and took them into dark times may have gotten a museum the year after his death but it’s only 31 years later and looks like it’s been savagely beaten and vandalized. Razor wire runs the length of the top, glass is smashed, and it’s a glorified dump inside. It’s all fenced off.Want to know what Albanians think about their era under communism? This memorial says it all.
Apparently they still let people climb up to top where the barbed razor wire is. Its a neat old bunker, abandoned downtown with spray paint and broken glass and trash. They say they are planning on fixing it up some day to become a museum or community center or computer education facility.
The fact that its not too old, but it is practically a ruin tells me that there is a rich history around this particular building and era.
We were there yesterday and there was a security guard to stop people from climbing! Our tour guide said he has never seen a security guard there before so perhaps this is a new thing?!
An Albanian monument to the Communism that nearly crushed the country is now a crumbling wreck. From 1944 to 1992, Albania was governed under a harsh Communist ideal that modeled itself after Stalinism. Landmarks such as the pyramid of Tirana still recall darker days. The out-of-place pyramid was built as a museum in honor of Enver Hoxha, a former Albanian leader who furthered the ideals of Stalinism for decades after the Russian dictator died. Designed by Hoxha’s daughter and son-in-law to keep the leader’s legacy alive, earning it the informal name, “The Enver Hoxha Mausoleum.” The museum retained its original purpose until 1991, and as national attitudes began to change, the space was converted to a convention center in the first shift in purpose that would eventually lead to its downfall.
This place is so unique. Incredible that theres a derelict building of this size in the middle of a capital city! If youre planning to walk to the top, the sides/back are better, but take care to avoid falling off the ramp through the glass roof!
Great Landmark. The place is closed down to inside. It was dangerous to climb up the pyramid because of many many broken glasses. Kids were throwing glasses around the place. Its great fun and adventurous to climb up. I crawled up the top, because I am dame fear of heights. Good view from he top of the pyramid of Tirana. Its open space to public.
Try climbing it up, smells like urine on the top but the view is worth it. We climbed it at night and the lights of the city look almost futuristic :inside its scary, but grab more people and peer pressure will prohibit you from showing it.
It is old and the building itself has bad looking but if you like to climb up on things and having a good panorama of the city I would give it a go! Definitely worth the climb!
Love the old look. Greats artsy pics. Careful inside as not well kept.
It is really fun to climb there. Apart from that u can still see and feel the effects of communist regime when u see that building
Enver Hoxa Piramide. Currently the building is in an awful state. It is very interesting and unique but unfortunately being mostly left to the elements. Definitely worth walking across town to see but don’t expect much. It is about a 10 minutes walk from Skandebeg Square.
The forgotten museum of the past dictator Enver Hoxha who ruled with an iron fist for 40 years leading many to call Albania the North Korea of Europe until his death in 1985. It’s now being remodeled into a tech hub and will be finished in 2019.
Iconic landmark in Tirana. It is no longer in the best of condition but there is talk of it being renovated. It was once a museum in honour of ex-Albanian leader Enver Hoxha and then served as a storage centre for the UN. Nowadays it is sadly covered in grafitti and is a place for TV antenas. Nevertheless, it is so unusual and bizarre and the sides are surprisingly steep up close. Kids climb up and down its sides.
Albanians seem to hate this place, since it is the museum of the soviet dictator 😂.The place is bad as you can see in the photos and there is no way to get in.
While the area inside is very dirty the space is great for a concert. I love the stair ways that lead to balconies overlooking the stage. The area does need more Safty features as anyone could fall off these rail-less balconies.
If you diggin youll find a mummy jigga 😎
Perfect spot to watch the sunset and a must see during daytime.
Wicked view. Wear shoes with grip or go barefooted. If barefoot careful not to kick the big bolts that stick out up the top.
At the moment the Pyramid is in really bad condition. Some kids climb to the top, dont expect must, but you can walk around and understand the absurdity of the second part of the 20th century
Left abandoned, could do with restoration. Nice little park, pyramid is used more by young as a skate park.
Its worth to visit this place in Tirana. Its a strange building, but funny to climb on. Young people go here to hang around or to meet each other.
