Punic Port - Historical landmark in Tunis, Tunisia
Good
Very impressive Carthage site but read about the site history before visiting, otherwise you wont see the beauty!
Beautiful place but unfortunately very poorly maintained!
Very nice spot, not quite dynamic but full of history !
Its fair
You find here a fishing village and panoramic view of Tunis Gulf.
How you value this area is directly related to your interest in history. So here goes my objective comment of what you will see: a weed-covered, rather dirty shallow ring of water surrounded by a dirt path and an ordinary Tunisian neighborhood (nowhere near as ratty as other reviews claim, and certainly not dangerous at all)However, if you know this is pretty much all thats left of the original punic Carthage, the once great city state that challenged Rome and was at some point pretty close to winning (which would have created a completely different world, with a much smaller European incidence and a much more powerful Africa), this shallow ring of dirty water takes a much more significant meaning. At the very least, it will make you reassess the old saying "history is written by the victors".
Heres my super review of most Carthage and Sidi Bou Said attractions and some tips:*first, if you havent bought your ticket, my first advice would be to skip Tunis as a destination. Worst trip of my life overall.*second, do not trust all reviews nor all pictures, many pictures do not match in Google maps, youll see what I mean when you arrive (but remember first tip)CarthageOverall, Carthage is only the ruins of what it once was. And when I say ruins Im literal, and in a bad state. Apart from the amphitheater (nothing super special compared to others in Europemost of the ruins are in a super bad state. Theres a ticket for 12 TND that covers all the "attractions"- Punic ports . CLOSED as of April 2022. Though you can see them from the outside. A small pool of putrid water.- Salammbo Tophet. Used to be a cemetery for infants, story unknown, apparently sacrifices and natural deaths along. Not much to see but some stones in the ground.- Musée Paléochrétien. Literally one room with a few stones and coins. Depressing. Not worth visiting, we spent like 4 minutes.- Acropolium of Carthage. The ruins of the fortress, literally a bunch of shapeless stones. Guides will try to give their services and respond super hostile if you reject them. Nice view from the hill, nothing particularly special.- Carthage national museum, CLOSED, as usual in this country.- Church in Byrsa hill. CLOSED.- Roman theater of Carthage. A well preserved theater, still being used. Nothing particularly special. Almost abandoned, bathrooms closed.- Baths of antoninus, some ancient Roman baths, it is a nice visit. Also with hostile guides. Probably one of the few good things in Carthage. Quite destroyed but still can imagine how it was.SIDI BOU SAID.Sidi Bou Said is super overrated, anyone whos been on the Greek islands will not find anything particularly special from this town. Theres practically nothing to see but the main street which is painted with white walls and blue doors which is very nice for the eyes. That of course until you cross one of the dozens of sellers that will chase you to death, it is virtually impossible to look at things in their establishments without being completely harrased.- Ennejma Ezzahra Palace. Went twice, both times closed. Cannot say anything else. Dont trust the schedules from the internet, maybe before 1pm?- Rue Habib Tameur. The famous white and blue street, not long, a few blocks. Very instagramable.La MARSASome old Beach Town, nothing particularly special to see.
Très bel emplacement pour picnic ou promenade entre la mer et le petit lac. La vue est splendide et le cadre est très agréable.
Top
A very nice place, I highly recommend visiting it
Interesting location
Too many residential properties around the port Not the scenery youd expect from one of the most important merchant ports in the world back in its time.
Calm soothing place. amazing view
Cool place, very interestingVery badly maintained sadly! It needs cleaning and better promotion
Best view ever
One of the most beautiful place
Its a great place to sit, and enjoy the view and the beach I recommend this
Impressive
Very impressive!
So cool to be able to walk where others walked.
History of significance in short supply
Guys this should be the real famous port. Carthage was meant to be the real big empire
Impressive to stand where once the great navy of Carthage was commanded.
Future meets past
very nice place
Wonderful
A must see
Extremely interesting location that served as the port for Carthage, if you have the time stop by and see how they used to operate the two ports and how the ship housing / ramp system operated. One of the ramps has been excavated with the assistance of satellite imagery. Small area to see - expect to stay about 20 minutes or so.
Great place to visit
Interesting place with good wildlife varieties!
Requires more cleaning and polishing and some marketing and signs/billboards to explain the ancient importance of the location
Historical! Read about Tanit, the hisotry of Carthage , Hannibal ...
Stuff and services are so bad
Beautiful historic site of the Punic Ports of ancient Carthage. Both the military and commercial ports are here as well as a museum that is well worth visiting. The current site does not convey the grandeur and the sense that this was the center of power of the Mediterranean for centuries until Rome finally defeated Carthage after Hannibals famous attack upon Rome and Italy. Certainly worth a visit!
Magic
Amazing historical place that must be seen!
One of the most amazing archeologic places in Tunisia, having the ruines of the famous and prestigious port of Carthage during punic era and the battles with roman empire. A nice place also to enjoy the sunset mixed with the beach and sea view.
you have to see this
Stones and rock are still there. A memorable site with poor protection. Free entry.
Not maintained much, few things still visible. The maquettes are very interesting and the guy at the door is very knowledgeable. Still good to see as part of the Carthage circuit
Excellent beautiful and stunning place to visit, both inside and surrounding. Its free too.
Love the emerging colours and the unblocked perspective of the water
