When sailors reached this gate; they would kiss the ground with happiness that they survived the voyage. Beautiful architecture and the ‘out side doors of the gate are awesomely talked compared to the opening into the ‘city’. The grade/ramp gives you a good work out going up.

This massive red door represents the grand entrance for people deboarding ships entering the city back in the early days and was once intended for dignitaries. It is now a tourist attraction and marks the southwestern edge of the trail around the historic site of El Morro castle / fort.

If you like history this place is wonderful. Definitely pop by and check out the gate in the wall around San Juan where the dignitaries would arrive and be received. Definitely check it out either on your way to or on your way from the fort in old San Juan.

I absoluptly loved the view and boardwalk overlooking both the fort and the ocean. Its a very beautiful and serene place. The design and atmosphere of this place compares to nothing. Though, each part of Puerto Rico is beautiful, each place is very unique and different and this place certainly feels unique and different. Perfect for family photo Christmas cards opportunities. Its just beautiful.

After months at sea, the ships that came from Spain docked here and the Marinos entered through this door directly towards the cathedral to thank God for arriving safely.

If you were a dignitary from Spain between the 16th and 19th centuries, you would enter the city through this place, called the Puerta de San Juan. The San Juan gate as you see it today was built in 1635. It has been repaired and restored over the years, and is the last remaining of the five main gates of Old San Juan. You can take a walk through this site where you will see beautiful Spanish style residences and a spectacular view.

One of the many site Viejo San Juan area has to offer. Not many know the true history about this passage. This was the way the Spaniards/Conquistadors controlled the people who entered into the city. Its location near a few other spots that should be visited as well. When you enter through the passage, you see a very nice block with the old architecture building. As you exit this passage you have a beautiful view of Paseo de la Princesa with El Morro in the distance. Those are other location I will recommend to visit.

For centuries, Spanish dignitaries entered San Juan through this gate. This gate was San Juans formal or symbolic entrance. Spanish guards used to secure the gates at night. If you were outside when the gates closed, you had to remain outside until the gates were re-opened the next morning.

This is a great place to visit and has lots of great views. Filled with history and a great place to take pictures. There are hundreds of feral cats along the walkway that are available for adoption, but it doesnt appear that anything is being done to stop the breeding. This is also very close to Poncé de Leons "Casa Blanca" and the famed "Fountain of Youth."

The Paseo del Morro (walk from San Felipe del Morro to the San Juan Gatewas magnificent! Take the walk just before sunset and stop at the gate for a beautiful view of the sun setting into the water. There were tons of cats along the walkway, but otherwise the path was not crowded.

Old San San Juan was a completely walled city back in Spanish colonial times. There were 7 gates through the walls that protected the city. The San Juan gate is the only remaining one out of the 7. Its a great place to start or end your walk in the "Paseo de la Princesa" in Old San Juan. From here you can now also walk over to the San Felipe del Morro fort.
