MacKenzie Park Rd, Lubbock, TX 79401, United States, Lubbock
Attraction at Mackenzie Park featuring prairie dogs & interpretive signage since 1935.
A must go place when visiting Lubbock. It was so amazing to watch the Prairie dogs at play. So peaceful and entertaining. There is no charge foe the park. The park areas were nice as well. Would love to come back and just enjoy watching them folic. I even had one bar at me a couple of times. The home they make underground is amazing. The story book on the website tells their history.
So many Prairie Dogs! They run around several areas of the park. Sun a fun place and no charge!
A must go place when you visited Lubbock !! These little creatures are fun to see. Also, it helps you appreciate how caring Texans are with nature. Loved it!
Signage wasnt clear but we did find the main fortis where the prairie dogs live. It was fun to watch them
Would definitely recommend this place. Prairie dogs are so adorable and are everywhere and I mean everywhere. Admission is free of charge. Lots of space to see them. Very hot. No shade. Would advice you to take water and a umbrella if you will be walking around for a long period of time. Perfect for kids.
Great story behind the town, and a perfect place to study how these wonderful critters behave. Unfortunately, some of them had mange and litter was prevalent on their side of the viewing area.
Quite possibly the greatest place is West Texas. Its an open field with a short brick wall all around it, and a bunch of prairie dogs hanging out inside. Its a very simple place, but the prairie dogs are hilarious to watch.
Neat little park right off the highway. Just follow the signs around the baseball fields and youβll see them everywhere. Lots of people recommend carrots and kale we went with Cheetos, that way it was easy to tell who we had already fed by the stained paws and face.
Prairie dogs so animated. Posted history of park but no indication whether ok to feed or what to feed.
Such a nice place to spend a morning - the prairie dogs are adorable and some even walk up to you :)
I was amazed by how active the prairie dogs were! I visited on a Sunday afternoon towards the end of May and they were all extremely active and pretty unafraid of people. Park carefully, as they have taken over the parking lot pretty significantly.
Visit this place every time were in town. Kids love it!
absolutely cute, one of them barked at me as a warning not to get close but another was letting me get close, amazing! :)
Great to see prairie dogs in action. Bring baby carrots.
Fun experience for the family, got to check out the prairie dogs, and the park complex. Lots of ball fields, a golf course, bike trails, an amusement park, and a lake.
This is a very unique attraction. The dogs were skittish when I visited. A previous time they would come up as if checking to see if you had food.
Other than Buddy Holly, Prairie Dog Town is Lubbocks other claim to fame. I wouldnt drive across Texas to visit, but if youre passing through and have some time, its worth a quick stop. Upon arriving, you will be greeted by the chirping of the black-tailed prairie dog. It is definitely amusing to spend a bit of time watching the little critters do what they do..
Its a great place to see the Prarie dogs up close. You can watch them playing and they dont run and hide from noises or voices. This would be a good way to introduce young children to these playful critters, along with several types of birds.
We visited late in the day and there were quite a few prairie dogs out who came over eagerly for our carrots. They were not crazy about the string beans we brought. Unfortunately, after a little while, someone with a barking dog showed up which scared them all into their holes and even after the dog left they did not really come back out. We were not sure if this was due to the dog or also because it was getting a bit late. Anyway, we had a lovely time.
What an adorable place to visit. Its just a simple extension to a city park, but what other city park has this? Its free. Its always open. And the little critters are happy to scurry around for you.
My grandson loves it. I wish they had benches to sit on so you could enjoy ot or even picnic tables so you could sit and enjoy the Prairie Dogs. I REALLY wish they would address the mange some of the poor little guys haveπ
I LOVE THEM GO SEE THEM THEY BEEP AND CHIRP AND SCAMPER
This was such a fun place to visit. Its free, there are a ton of prairie dogs and you can feed them if you wish. They are super cute and fun to watch
Bring lots of carrots. The prairie dogs are just too cute. We got a bonus, there was a burrowing owl left of the retaining wall. I think it was worth the drive from dallas as a day trip.
What a fun experience! Great place for a walk and picnic. Really enjoyed reading and watching the prairie dogs! Great place for the family with playground nearby.
We showed up with a bag of carrots. We were grateful to leave with our lives. Do not arrive empty handed, because I think the fat ones are living off the remains of humans who brought no food.It was like a scene from West Side Story. The bag of carrots opened and prairie dogs started coming out of everywhere. I expected them to break out knives and into a dance number. My wife didnβt let go of one carrot in time and had a prairie dog hanging onto her finger. She was screaming, the prairie dog was squealing, but in the end the βdog walked away with his food.Assuming she doesnβt die later of rabies (they donβt carry rabies), it was hilarious. But donβt do that. You donβt want βKilled by Prairie Dogβ on your tombstone.Seriously, these guys will come up and take food from your hand. Butβ¦again... donβt play tug of war. They will win based on numbers alone.
It is so much fun to go here and see all of the prairie dogs. This time we also saw a burrow owl so that was really cool. My grandsons love coming here too.
So much fun. Seeing them in person was much more exciting than watching them on a nature show. They are friendly and like treats. They are quickly scared by the presence of any dogs. Great place to take the kids too.
Fun little place to spend 15 to 30 minutes. The prairie dogs will eat out of your hand!We gave them carrots and celery and they thoroughly enjoyed.I will say though not sure how the locals use this place but we saw a lot of cars come and goβ¦.I think they were all eager for the tourists to leave. So definitely go by but be aware.
A Really neat place to visit. The prairie dogs are a bit more friendly compared to how it was a few years ago
Me , my daughter and bf went recently and we had fun . the prarie dogs were extremely active. Its better going there when the sun is setting .we did see a family feeding them bread .. Feel free to not feed them . especially things that arent good for them
This place is great! Bring carrots or some other prairie dog food. Great entertainment for the kids!
These little guys are amazing to see. They were so happy to see people. Made all kinds of noises while we were there. Let us get up and close to them. Almost able to touch them. And the little families they have are too cute. Feed them carrots too and they were happy. Must go see them again.
Was not expecting this to literally be a town of prairie dogs. A city may be a better descriptor. They are everywhere. They have spread and colonized outside of their walls. Babies, big ones, little ones, barking, eating. Was worth a quick visit
If you like cute animals then it is worth checking out or taking your little kid(sto visit. The Town is towards the back of the park. There are probably at least 30-50 of these little guys lol.
I swear to God this is my happiest place on Earth. Be cool and take snacks and those magnificent creatures will keep a smile on your face
This was the most adorable thing ever! Did not disappoint! Please research what they eat before bringing food to feed them!
So many prairie dogs! They ranged from huge old males and females to tiny babies. While we were there they spent most of the time eating. Plenty of photo ops - they are pretty tame. They will come close to you if you stand still, but will run away if you move. Definitely worth the stop!
This place is pretty cool the second you pull up to the location there are wild prairie dogs running around across the road an all through the grass playing with each other.
A relaxing place to watch some prairie dogs in their natural habitat. They like seeds naturally. I also saw some eating orange peal and there was an empty corn cob. There was lots of untouched bread laying around, so I dont believe they like it.
Loved this experience! Google maps gps will take you right to the area. Free. Located in a park, these prairie dogs roam freely in the area. Their cute squeaks and friendly approach was so much fun. These prairie dogs came about by a man who was worried about the population, so he placed 4 in the area and the population continues to grow (they are all over the place!). Many of them approached us, but you may need to be cautious- some had patches of fur missing (could be from excessive burrowing, nutrition, parasites, etc). Also, be careful driving around the area- we noticed where some had burrowed into the driveway. We went on a Wednesday evening and were nearly the only people there (1 other car).
Be careful when driving past the baseball field. The tunnels go out past the "town". These little guys are cute though. Theyre used to people being around and just go about their business.
Im from California and had never seen a prairie dog until visiting this place. It was wonderful to see them and watch them interact with each other. Id return here next visit to Lubbock.
Ive never seen a prairie dog up close. Very cool and unique experience to see and feed them. We gave them Carrots my 2 year old was entertained.
Really cool place--Groundhogs everywhere!! Not what I expected at all... this one stop made the 5hr trip worth it! And, Of course, my brother graduating from law school was more awesome, but there was some really strong competition! #reesscruggs #texastech #graduation #schooloflaw #MackenzieParkPark in Lubbock, Texas-- also features Golf, amusement park, sculpture garden, prairie dog habitat, trails & more in a lush 248-acre park.
I thought that Prairie Dog Town was a much more formal place where you buy tickets and there is a lot of formal information on these creatures. Nope, itβs basically an open area next to a parking lot within a Lubbock park. There are few signs nor educational material. But you can be up close and personal with these inquisitive creatures - and I was able to see a lot of them. There was something about the informal nature of this place without cages, walls or people that makes this appealing.
Amazing place to get some fresh air, exercise, walk the dogs! LOVE THE DOG PARK AREA!!!Its a shame that the people of Lubbock dont take more pride in this amazing place & throw their trash in the many trash cans around the park. But other than that we had an amazing time. Love this little gem we found in our new home of Lubbock, Texas! Gonna be our new favorite spot for sure! πππΆππ€
Lots of fun watching the prairie dogs. Some of them chatter at you and show off. I will return to see these guys again.
My wife and I like coming here to feed the prairie dogs. They like roots and plants, so we typically bring a bag of baby carrots. Ive seen people throw them celery too and they seem to enjoy. Go on a sunny day mid morning, they typically will be out eating then. A great activity for younger kids. Also, dont bring your family dog, the prairie dogs dont like it.
Relaxing spot to go view the prairie dogs, unfortunately some of the locals view them as pests that should be exterminated due to the holes they make. Also sad that they are hand fed a lot and are given food that they shouldnt be eating.
