Prairie Dog Central Railway - Tourist attraction in Selkirk, Canada
Was a very memorable experience for my first visit there
Great time on a old coal burning machine
We boarded a train and then a band of Outlaw robbed us!! This train and the whole experience was just FANTASTIC ! I recommend it to everyone. And they are raising money for cancer.
Was a lot of fun. They sang some songs. The kids had a blast. There were hotdogs and drinks and home made pies available for purchase at the stop. Highly recommend
I took the Prairie dog central to Grouse Isle. The event was train robbery cow boys and gals. (Role play)The people on horse back pretend to rob the train, donations for charity was collected. They also had banjo and guitar players. We were able to buy food, snacks and desserts at grouse isle. They had a old town to explore and we also got to see the horse and riders. You can also see the train engine and other carts. While you enjoy the ride they have a guide tell you the history of the old steam engine train.Take note when booking they have a diesel train and the og steam engine #3
We attended the fall supper, everything was spectacular, we got to ride on an old steam engine and cars, and the staff were so wonderful!! We would go again in a heartbeat!
An amazing experience that everyone needs to try. Great fun!
We drove from Brantford to Manitoba to go on this wonderful train. It was more than worth it. The entire staff were amazing. They showed us all around as we were very early. Even know they were busy. They even offered to let me ride a few feet in the engine which I would have dearly loved but we got back too late and we had to leave. They had a charity train robbery on the train with horses riding beside. They "ROBBED"us all and raised $1,400 for cancer. We had a two hour stop with musicians and much and heritage buildings.Absolutely great day thank-you P. D. C.Wendy and Jack
My friend and I had a blast participating in the Hogheist!! The volunteers were all very friendly and loads of fun! Dressed as cowboys or cow gals and in uniform as porter etc they were an entertaining bunch! They performed and sang and it was just fun! The robbers on horseback were a real thrill! The food was good and there was lots to see at Grosse Isle. This was our first trip and definitely not our last!
Great location. Parking is available but could be busy on most of the days. Great way of hanging out. Value for money. I was under the impression that speeds gonna be high but it was around 20 to 30 ish. This ride is way better than going to digital places.Kids had fun. I am giving very rare 5 star because of customer service.I found most of the staff to be nice. Very well maintained of the sites and train.Mature guys handling and very entertaining. Attached few pics of the sights too. I recommend that ride to every person. GUYS DO BRING SOME SNACKS ON THE WAY.You can get food at the destination but incase you like snacking.
Such a boring trip stopped at nowhere! Such a waste of my precious time. Would never come again!
This was our first time and we loved it ! The steam locomotive was so neat to see, and we loved the smell of coal! The passenger cars are in amazing shape and very comfortable! It was nice to experience how people traveled back in the day! The staff and volunteers were amazing and had great stories and are good singers!
Excellent experience. Knowledgeable volunteers, enthusiastic and engaging. Strongly recommend booking in advance. Most runs sell out well in advance.
Family fun. Even the adults will feel like kids. Buy tickets well in advance. You can even book the caboose for parties.
We came for the great train robbery a few years ago now. My husbands birthday is in September. It was our family gathering. My husbands grandfather brought an organ from England. They lived in the Rosser area. We are wanting to donate it.
Very nice place for trip, and staff friendly.
Great ride everyone friendly
Great way to spend part of the day!Staff was great and well I formed and able to answer any questions I had about the train. If your thinking about it...stop thinking and do it!
Always a great time. Visited when they had the horseback robbery playing out. Kids loved it, the volunteers are amazing, and the activities off the train are great for families.
What a wonderful experience! I haven’t been on the PDC since I was a kid myself so I couldn’t remember much. We took our 4 and 7 year olds yesterday and everyone had such a great day. The lovely volunteers/workers shared the history of the train as well as, lighthearted stories and fun conversation with passengers. When we arrived at GI all the vendors were stocked with homemade goodies and ready to go. They moved the long line quickly and efficiently. The entertainment for the kids during lunch was so fun for them. Everyone had a perfect summer day on the PDC and we will be back again soon! Thank you! ♥️
Customer service was above and beyond , whole family had a blast we cant wait for next train ride !
Our family had an absolute blast! Not only was the train ride so much fun I kept in touch with the coordinator over a year to keep me posted on when they were running again, part was nostalgia and part making new memories with my young family, a big thank you to all who run the prairie dog train you have made some beautiful memories 🥲and new ones to remember.I 100%recommend to anyone💖💖💖💖All who work/run this amazing people!!!!
This was a nice trip with the family. You watch the train hookup, then a trip from winnipeg to grosse isle. Their was a magician in grosse isle. Little shop, food, an older park and a mower pulling wagons for the kids. Lots of parking. Every one was friendly.
Great fathers day experience! A/C somewhere out there on a hot summers day would have made it 5☆ enjoyable but the food, playground and tractor train rides at Gros Isle kept the kids entertained! Great staff showing genuine enthusiasm!
First time on the PRAIRIE DOG. SO Much fun. Amazing learning experience for children of all ages.
Really fun, went for the theme bandits and the horses running along side the train was awsome. Suggest avoiding wasp season as we went once then and my son got stung. Bring some cash as the hot dogs are amazing and baked pastries. Theres a mini train ride for the kids when you get there. Check out the guy who sells hand carved and painted items (magnets $7, figurines$9, and bigger items$50,very amazing stuff. The on board entertainment is excellent, the duo band is very interactive. This will be a yearly event for us.
What a wonderful experience. Great prairie views, beautiful train and entertainment. Worth far more than what we paid. A must see.
Buy tickets in advance. This is a great family friendly excursion. Teens may not be impressed, unless they are train enthusiasts. But children young and young at heart will enjoy this Manitoba treasure.
Seems like a nice place. I cant add a lot of info other than how it looks on the outside as it is closed because of Covid. We also tried to just walk on the outside and were told by someone from security that it was closed to outsiders
Such a cool experience for Manitoba, I cant wait until it opens again. I took some pictures and gave them a vintage look.
A truly fabulous experience that the whole family will love. Im a train nerd so my reasons for loving the Prairie Dog will likely differ from most people. Suffice it to say that every Manitoban needs to ride at least once, and for visitors to Winnipeg it needs to be on the list of things to do if you have the time. The locomotives change so make sure that if its your first, or only ride, that you select a steam run. The diesel is great also but the steam is the authentic experience.
It was a great experience! The conductor obviously loves his job, and there were musicians performing in the cars. The stop over in Grossse Isle would have been better if we had dressed warmer. There is a shelter, but its not heated. So dress in layers!!!
A great step into the past. The staff were very knowledgeable and able to answer our many questions. Would recommend for any age.
It was a very relaxing and enjoyable trip. The stop at Gross Isle was fun and educational with all the historical items in the buildings. The grandkids had a blast. It was a memorable time. The staff were so hospitable and knowledgeable, and very accommodating. Great family day!
Fantastic day trip (11-3pmthat includes a historic steam locomotive ride, friendly and funny crew members that entertain everyone. The destination, Grosse Isle has much to offer for the 1.5hr stay: wagon rides, food, historic bldgs and a welcoming town. Inkster Junction where the train ride starts has a waiting room, many locomotives (steam & dieselto admire, a souvenir shop, and outdoors a Dutch street organ. In a separate bldg the WinNtrak Model Railroad Club of Wpg, has N gauge model railways to enjoy. Fun, Nostalgic, Interesting!
Absolutely thrilling nostalgic experience ! Went on family fun day and we had an amazing time with the kids. Would definitely recommend to pack a lunch if you are not into burgers and hotdogs.
Good with kids at summer. 3 hours trip. Book at their website before going to the station
Such a unique experience. You feel like youre back in time in the classic, all original coaches from the early 1900s. You trundle along at 10-12 Mph, from Winnipeg to Grosse Isle, and then enjoy great heritage locations when you reach your destination. The porters are also very friendly and they offer different themes for the various days. We went on the clown theme day.
Great family outing. Rented the caboose with our extended family.. The locals staged a horse back robbery which was great. The town of Grosse Isle had historical buildings, very well done. All in all, a great day
Was so much more than I expected. I loved the train ride including the stickup by Bonnie and Clyde. However the stop at Gross Isle was also impressive and unexpected. They have gathered several heritage buildings to the site and they all had character actors explaining their history.
Really cool experience and a lovely ride. All of the volunteers and staff were super friendly and helpful
The train is a nice experience and very young-family friendly. The staff were all helpful and friendly. They do a good job and the preserved buildings are interesting to see. The Calliope at the main station was amazing to see working. Sadly, although scheduled for the day we booked, the steam engine was not in service (which was the main reason to bring our out-of-country guests). The one criticism I have is the quality of food at Gross Isle. The hot dogs and smokies were all overcooked and the pastries were mediocre (they should probably steam the sausages instead of using the BBQ). Bring your own lunch and problem solved. Overall, a great way to spend the day.
My family had such a great time on this train. Its a small blast into the past. We got to enjoy their last Halloween ride for the year and it was just the right amount of stimuli for our kids.I will note though that this is more for heavy train enthusiasts or younger kids. There really isnt much to do on the train and its slow moving. The staff are friendly, the ride is relaxing and the train car is beautifully vintage.
We just completed an evening trip on the Prairie Dog Central. The trip included a "robbery" by armed horsemen and some "turncoat sheriffs" and a meal with entertainment at the Grosse Isle Hall.I admire the dedication of the people that keep this living history available for all to enjoy. The engine and all the coaches are over 100 years old and kept in excellent shape.
We booked a trip on the Prairie Dog Central for Grandparents Day this year. Had a WONDERFUL time with the family. There was a lot to do for the kids in Grosse Isle and the live entertainment was very good. We will definitely go back again next year and invite more family and friends!
Its a fun trip for families. Its about a 1.5 hour ride one way, with some great small-town hospitality. The train is in pretty good condition for being almost 100 years old. The ride was made more enjoyable with the musical presenters who traveled the cars singing train songs for the kids.
Wonderful Mothers Day experience for the whole family. A real blast from the past.
Great family fun in a train from the 1900s! Staff is extremely friendly and helpful the entire ride. They try to make kids smile and have a great time. We went on the last ride of the season on Oct 29th. It was a Halloween theme and the entire train was decorated and they even wore costumes. Highly recommend it!
Great volunteers, great experience. A must do for boys of all ages.
What a neat way to spend a Sunday! Great for a family outing!
