Staroměstské nám. 1, 110 00 Josefov, Czechia, Liberec
Medieval timepiece on the facade of city hall displaying the twelve apostles as the clock strikes.
I thoroughly recommend going up. Great view of the Old Town Square, but overpriced at 250 koruna. To watch the little show the clock does every hour, grab yourself a drink in one of the cafes across from the building. It definitely beats standing!Surely the price paid can fund some soap and hand driers in the toilets though. Both werent working during my visit.
Beautiful and amazing clock with a surprise at the top of each hour. Worth the price to go inside and see the mechanisms and enjoy the view from the top of the tower. There is an elevator that will take you all the way to the top of you pay a little extra!
The clock was cool to watch but a little anti-climatic. It is good to read up on it ahead of time or while you are waiting to understand the clock a bit better. There is a lot to it!It gets very crowded so go early - we went on Oct 1st and it was busy like it was summer!
A must visit place when you are in Prague. Try to be there for the show which happens at every change of hour, when the little window on the top opens and you can see saints rotating. It is situated at liberty square with other spectacular buildings. It is usually quite busy.
Wow it was absolutely spectacular! I had never seen such an amazing time peace. We were very lucky to be there on the hour and see the spectacle and its full glory. We got a lot of wonderful photos and videos for our traveling show on the interior and exterior.
No matter how much you have seen in the world but I guarantee that you have never seen like this before. This is one of the most spectacular thing that I have ever seen in my life. I was really enthusiastic to see that tower. Before coming to Prague, I searched for places that I can visit in the city and this clock was one of the most fascinating thing that I saw on internet. I have seen this before on the internet but had no idea that I existed in Prague the city which I was about to visit. I was so happy. I guess on the very next day I reached Prague and went to see this but forget to have my camera with me. This clock tower is very special not intermittently of its historical significance but because religious and astronomical importance. This is the oldest functional tower of the world and still functional. The hands of the clock signifies the movement of planets which are very important in terms of astrology. I came to know that there are many versions of astrology. As Indian astrology, Chinese astrology and there are many version of western astrology. Astrologer can make predictions about anything just by knowing the movement and position of stars and planets. I dont believe in astrology but firmly belief in its social importance. Still there are many people in India who carry important work as suggested by astrologer. I dont know if special people are trained in West for astrology but in India Pandits belonging to Brahman caste are usually trained in this kind of knowledge. This tower has been restored many times. After every hour you will hear bells and a visual animated scene as the statues will run in a motion. There is a skeleton on the right side of the clock which area to pull the rope to ring the bells. The tower has been restored many time and recently in 2022. This should be on your priority list if you are visiting Prague. I wish you good luck fir your visit. Stay safe and wear your mask.
Once again, a nice sight to stroll by and take a look at, but the square near the area was way more exciting and interesting to me. Lots of cool shops and beautiful architecture. Tons of people crowd around the clock when it rings, and while it’s beautiful, it’s not really my kind of thing. Still worth taking a look at, especially if you can get there when there aren’t many people.
The mediaeval tower clock is located at the southern side of the Old Town Hall Tower. When the clock strikes the hour (from 9.00 a.m. to 11.00 p.m.), the procession of the Twelve Apostles sets in motion. The astronomical clock was placed at the front side of the tower in 1410. At the southern part of the tower a special stone chamber was built for its mechanical part. The astronomical clock consists of different parts – such as a calendar and an astronomical desk or the mechanism of twelve apostles which sets them in motion.
Very cool clock that plays on the hour it is a medieval astronomical clock attached to the Old Town Hall in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic. It was built in 1410
This is a beautiful piece of architecture to look at... The history behind it is amazing... To see the clock on the hour and the apostles come out is only ok.. I would recommend you go inside the clock tower and firstly go to the top and look out at the square... Its breathtaking.. And most definitely do the guided tour inside.. Our guide was brilliant she was so passionate and Knowledgeable she really had us engrossed from start to finish.
Really interesting tour not just in the tower but you can undergo of the buildings. Can you imagine where was the ground level of these buildings? I recommend guided tour, it is fantastic
Very beautiful and ornate public clock that does not really tell the time (as far as I can tell). There is a smaller actual clock on the right of it. Attracts crouds as every hour there is a small show of figurines (saintsdisplaying on the 2 little windows that open. A bit overhyped but nice none the less.
One of its kind! It is the only clock in the world which is working from the 14th century. No Czech Republic visit is complete without visiting this place. Please take a guide who can explain about the functioning of the clock and how to read it.Do visit the tower and enjoy the view of the city from there. You can buy souvenirs from the nearby market as well.
The square is nice, but the clock is, yeah, mostly just a astronomical clock. Would be nice if there was more information about how it works and eat is special. But the surroundings are great!
The place is a mandatory place to visit for me when i go to Prague. The clock is beautiful. You have to check when the small puppet of apostles will walk in the clock. I love being there. It was very very very crowd and a lot of people there, made us difficult to take picture properly. But i can understand and i still love the place. The atmosphere is so different and unique. Maybe it will be good idea to come there in weekdays.
Amazing building... One of the oldest astronomical clocks in the world. It shows months days hours planets and namedays and much more. I was lucky enough to to see 12 disciples to rotate in the small window above the clock. You can enter the main building which is Old Tawn Hall. There you can see big halls and the observation tower. There is easy access to top by walking on the flat path or in the lift but you have to pay extra for this.
A beautiful clock filled with techniques to display different forms of time. It shows the current time in prague, the time between sunrise and sunset (differs every day), the time until sunset (the so called bohemian time), the place of the sun (the zodiac signsand the star time. Under the main clock is another clock which shows the month, which has emblems of different saints important to the city of Prague. Above the main clock are two doors which open every hour, to show the parade of apostels.
This was so fun to visit and watch! On the hour, the little, glass windows at the top open, showing the different apostles/saints rotating behind the clock face. The clock sits in the middle of Old Town Square, so it was pretty busy both times that I went. On the hour, specifically, it was pretty challenging to get close to it as people wanted to watch/listen to the chimes. Its worth it, though! This quirky clock is definitely a must-go if you are visiting Prague.
How can this not be a 5 star. It amazing ! And I was allowed to use my tripod. And yes if your a photographer its a must to pay to go in. Totally worth it !!
The Prague Clock or Orloj is located just off the old town square in the city of Prague, one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. It is an astronomical clock dating from the 1400s. Take a minute to observe the clock and the figures around the dial. It does put on a little show when the hour is struck showing the apostles in the windows above. A skeleton (deathstrikes the clock on the hour while the other three figures shake their heads no saying they are not ready for death. One representing vanity holds a mirror, one with a bag of gold for greed, and the Turk represents lust. You will also notice the moon, sun, earth and zodiac on the clock. It’s really quite beautiful and fun to watch.
Loved watching this clock, it does get fairly busy around it when it is due to chime so I suggest getting there a little early to get a good spot. Very interesting free attraction to visit when in Prague
Spectacular! We bought the ticket to the top of the tower with amazing views. We thought the Prague castle views were good but these views were even better. They have removed most of the steps in the climb to the top and have both a ramped and elevator option. The tour into the town hall rooms and tunnels with our english guide was fantastic. Our guide was so knowledgeable and friendly. Its definitely worth the entry price to see.
Its an unique medieval monument. It was built in 1410 and is the oldest operational clock in the world. You have to see it to appreciate it. Its a complicated clock and it can illustrate the movements of the Sun, moon and stars across the sky not to mention the time as well. This clock will definitely be a check-off point when you visit Prague.
Very cool landmark, tour of the building is excellent too. Amazing view from top of tower! We found clock changing hours to be very cool and unique, despite some saying in here it isn’t as cool as you’d think.
Day 44: Prague, you have so much to see and do. We started the day with a visit to the Prague Astronomical Clock. We climbed to the top of the tower for the best views of the city and then enjoyed watching the medieval clock on the old city hall display the twelve apostles while the skeleton rings the bell (video included). We visited St. Nicholas Church with an impressive interior including massive chandelier. We walked through the old jewish quarter and then walked across the river to the Prague Castle complex (which we will revisit tomorrow and go inside). A little trek up to Petrin Tower and a fun visit to the maze if mirrors before walking back across the river, this time crossing the famed Charles Bridge. We ended the site seeing with a visit to the Dancing House, a modern office building with a funky twist. We try to sample local specialties wherever we visit and today we tried pork knuckle, a traditional czech dish. The thing was massive, but surprisingly yummy. We also tried pickled cheese. We had our doubts but it was delicious! Prague has a wealth of history and is quite the interesting place.
The clock is stunning, you should absolutely not miss visiting it when in Prague.I also loved the atmosphere created by it, even if some might complain that is crowded because a lot of people will gather to see "The Walk of the Apostles" I think it just adds to its charm and makes it a really special event to be there and admire its beauty and sanctity. Its the oldest astronomical clock still in function and you can enjoy viewing it while savouring a local beer in the pubs and restaurants located near by.
The iconic watch. It’s excelent. I visited in the night of the churches so i could see the apostoles and the mini church inside. Totally recommend it. Its a must see if you go to prague.
This review is only for the workers here, as I couldnt go up to the tower. People so, so rude. There was a system error so you could only buy with cash. They clearly told me there was no problem at all with cash. So I go to withdraw cash to the bank (not a single one closeand when I came back, another worker told me that that was false, I cant buy with cash now. What happened between those exact 20 minutes? Who knows. Maybe they didnt feel like working at all and wanted to go home early (this was 17:30 by the way). Not a single sorry for lying to your face. Nothing. Just a "fork you", we dont care.Update: up to 3 stars, because the views deserve better rating, the rest still applies. Its perfect at sunset, so you can view the area by day and night if you wait. The rooftops at sunset are great to look at. But you get pretty much the same (plus the bridge itselfviews facing the Castle from Charles Bridge and surroundings. You dont gain anything extra from the height though.
Hard to believe that a 600-year-old clock is maintained until now, really cool to see all the moving parts, it was in the process of repairs when I visited—beautiful combinations of colors. The blues on the skin color background can be seen from afar. Its usually very crowded around, I could not go inside because at that time it was not open to the public.
Famous Clock. Colorful and intricate mechanism. Easily visible from the square but can be crowded for at the hour show. Can go up the tower though we didnt go up. Looks very good in night when it is lit up.
Important!: Make sure to visit the underground chambers! (The ticket 250 CZK also includes a guided tour of the City Hall but also the underground of the buildings that compose the City Hall and Astronomical Clock).I would say that I was most amazed by the underground chambers some dating to the 12th century (according to the guide). The clock is also remarkable, make sure you read about the history or ask for a pamphlet with information about it. It’s amazing to think it stood there for 600+ years. The downside of the guided tour was that the guide left very little time for the underground chambers and she didn’t know quite a lot of information about it. I would definitely recommend the people in charge to think about creating a separate tour for it with specialised people.5/5 experience1/5 guide
I highly recommend getting to the tower before 10am as the tickets are cheaper at this time. But it is well worth it anyway! You get a full 360° view of Prague and it is breathtaking. I went on a Wednesday morning and it was quiet and peaceful. At one point, I had the tower all to myself. I stayed for a while, letting the magical atmosphere sink in. An essential part of your trip to Prague.
Amazing astronomical watch with history behind it in the middle of a square that is full of beautiful buildings from the middle ages with amazing facades and bright colours multiple small shops down the alleys with nice memorabilia including fantastic pocket watches!
Of course the most famous popular and marked place in Prague. Very comfortable to walk here cause every sights very closed. Also you can sit to drink beer and enjoy check cuisine. Walk and eat the best here. Enjoy.
The clock is really interesting and cool. The hour change is rather unique with all of the 12 apostles going around… Worth checking out if you are in the area or sitting down in a nearby cafe!
Considering theres so much to do in Prague, one ought to find the time to be there at round hours to witness the astronomical clock strike time. Its beautiful and fun in a gothic way.
So cool! We arrived just in time to hear it come 4pm! When youre in the main plaza of Old Town, you have to go around the other side of the church to see the clock.
This is a must see.A mind bending art work with multiple indicators:day, month, year, zodiac, sun and moon positions. The clock was first installed in 1410, and is one of the oldest astronomical clock in the world and the oldest clock still in operation. It is mounted on a wall of Old Town Hall from the Old Town Square in Prague. At exact hour it will move alongside with the animated figures that surrounds it.
This beautiful old tower is located in the old city main square. You can sit in a nearby cafe, restaurant or a bench and watch it. Every certain time (30 minutes or 1 houryou can see the figures moving out from the upper part. It’s a very known tourists attraction.People are waiting there to catch that moment with their cameras. All the area is full of restaurants and shops.
It is worth seeing it from inside! Every day, the first working hour is with 50% ticket reduction. If you want to take a proper picture (with light over the clock- go before lunch.

PRAGUE is my Mother city ...what can I say except it takes your breath away with versatile architecture, from Medieval through to Baroque, Gothic, Neo-classical, and much more. Like a crown is the famous Castle perched high on the hill overlooking the whole city which emanates a magical fairy tale quality. I know Praha like the back of my hand as I have lived there with my half-sister who was born there and speaking fluent Czech makes Prague my second home...I will share some pictures from my many stays which should wet your appetite enough to visit this ambient city with amazing food, beer of course, and the Czech jazz musicians either in Night clubs or in town squares ,or on the famous Charles bridge are world class! There is so much to explore and discover !
It’s in old town Prague. If you want some great shots, go really early in the morning. Otherwise it’s going to be very crowded throughout the day up til late at night.I would suggest you to take a free tour if it’s your first time visiting Prague. Otherwise may be you are going to miss a lot of historical details.I had this tour guide who was really great with good sense of humour. I learned a lot of things about the city, more than I needed to know but it was really great. Don’t miss the hourly show of the clock. Again, it’s going to be really crowded and, the space in front of the clock is inadequate.
Wonderful piece of architecture, definitely a must see when you are in Prague. You should go the exact hour for example 4 pm or 5 pm to see the amazing show that happens. Get there a few minutes early because it can get crowded but you will not regret. It’s free so you can just look at it from the street
One of the mesmerising places of Prague during Christmas with awesome Christmas vibes and tree. Even though it was full snowy, raining , too cold like -7 still, it was crowded even though along with corona.Beautiful place !!! 😊
It is a really cool experience. Every hour there is a "show" from the clock. Id really suggest you study a little before going because if you just go with no back study, it will be hard for you to figure out time 😂. But whenever the hour strikes, there are so many moving parts that it makes you want to go back for more to pay attention to everything. Not only that, the clock is on the main square of Prague, so either way you are gonna pass by it. Enjoy you TIME and Prague.
A place in Prague that you must to visit as a first timer or just seat at a cafe or restaurant people watching! The clock was beautifully restored after WW II. We visited here in a cold winter morning, not many people, so we can take as many photos as we like! There are many cafe and restaurants you can select as you like, the price also reasonable but the service are not what we except!
Nice clock that chimes on the hour. Right off the old town with so much to see in the area. Watch the clock on the hour then head to the bridge. Many nice places to eat in the area and friendly people but get there early and claim your spot. Too bad the christmas market was closed
7th of October 2021.Basically, its a medieval clock in the old town hall (a replica of the old clock after building the new after the WWII). Every hour the clock beats and the statues of the 12 Apostles appearing. It is definitely worth a visit for the beautiful architecture.Just remember to go upstairs to enjoy the nice view of the city.PS: We went at 18:00 (because it says it is open until 20:00). After we paid the entrance fee, they informed us that we can not go to the underground cemetery.
Wonderful experience!Looking at the statues moving, at the top of the hour is a wonderful experience .The panorama from the belvedere of the tower is stunning and the guided tour of the dungeons was great.Kudos to Jan, the guy who walked us through, really appreciated!Only one note to the tickets purchasing spot on the ground floor, where the info point is: it would be great if the people working there would be able to properly understand and speak English.Overall its absolutely recommended!
