Posto - Restaurant in Valabhīpur, India
I had rated Posto 5-star an year back. But changing my rating now based on a poor experience last week. We had taken out 4 Kolkata biriyanis, as we thought it was very authentic based on past experiences. But this time the recipe had changed completely. It was a complete Hyderabadi style, where taste was a disaster. That was not at all the Kolkata biriyani as the name suggested! We were thoroughly disappointed because of our high expectations, on the back of a £50+ bill :(((
I had fairly high expectations from this place as I have heard so much about it. I have to admit that even then, Posto delivered above and beyond. Very authentic flavours from Kolkata, brought alive at this cozy little restaurant with excellent service.
The best biriyani I have ever had outside Kolkata. These guys should move to the city of London. If you have tried Darjeeling express, forget that place, this is the real deal. Can’t wait to go back.
A hidden gem in Harrow, close to Rayners Lane Underground station. One of the best restaurants serving bengali cuisines in London. I ordered Koraishutir Kochuri, Fish Fry and Mutton Biryani.1 portion of Kochuri comes with 2 pieces of kochuris and Alur Dom. Alur dom was a little too "tomato-ey" for my taste and the kochuris were 2-D, not 3-D 😂.1 portion of Fish fry comes with 2 pieces of Sea Bass fish, Kasundi and salad. While the fish was good, I found the Kasundi to be watery, i.e. diluted to reduce the strong mustardy flavour which was a big letdown for me.Mutton Biryani comes with 2 pieces of mutton (with bone), a potato, an egg, raita and salad.Overall, the food is good, but there is still room for improvement. Price is a bit on the higher side for the portion served.I would still recommend, specially my Bong friends in London to give this place a try.
Nice place and nice food. Staffs are very much friendly. Must try aam panna, fish cutlet, desi chicken, piilau rice, prawn malaikari.
Heard they served the best Biriyani in London and planned to eat here but was sadly very disappointed when I got to. The Biriyani was too dry and there was a egg shell in the rice too. Not enough meat in the Biriyani either. Overpriced as well. If the food was extremely good I wouldn’t be complaining.
Being a typical bong foodie we visited this restaurant with lots of expectation. The food was overall good but the other part of us were comparing every dish with its authentic taste, so from that perspective it was missing a bit.We tried many dishes- liked fish fry the most. Then the drinks- aam panna, nimbu pani, lassi. Fish Paturi with plain rice and Kokata Mutton Biriyani with mutton Kosha we’re also nice. I would like mustard seeds in the paturi to be a more smoother paste but it tasted good. Kolkata Mutton Biriyani was not as good as Kolkata Biriyani but still okay. It was going well with mutton kosha. Did not like the veg curry that comes with peas puri, it was too tangy. The service person was nice and rightly recommended us dishes to avoid and take. I guess we’ll go back again for the fish fry and Biriyani.
It’s a good place to have some Bengali food. I went from a far to meet my craving of my own cuisine. The owner & all the stuffs were really good. Quality & taste was also good 👍. Aam panna mojito” was the best item we taste. Highly recommended to taste once. But I should definitely say that there is definite scope for enhancing the taste of food to make it more authentic. We will expect better quality in terms of authenticity of food in the next time.
Very good freshly cooked food. The host was warm welcoming and recommended good dishes. The mutton biryani, the beetroot cutlets, tandoori aloo and calcutta kosha mutton are highly recommended. We even asked for takeaway portions.
Food was terrible and not worth it at all. Overall cleanliness is also not up to mark. Surely what they serve is nowhere near to authentic Bengali food
Travelled from East London in search of the Bengali/Calcutta food I grew up with, and this did not disappoint! The mustard rohu was excellent, as were all the other dishes we ordered. So pleased they served proper kasundi with the cutlets and chops. And I was delighted to see Malpua with rabdi on the menu - my favourite dessert and impossible to find elsewhere in London. Very friendly service and close to the tube to make travel easy.
I was disappointed by my experience of dining at Posto. I spent my formative years in West Bengal and relief authentic vegetarian Bengali food. All the dishes tasted a bit old and tangy and did not seem fresh at all including dal, aloo Posto and even the rasgullah payesh. Chilli paneer also didn’t fresh paneer, not cooked well and the preparation had too much sauce on it. Travelled over an hour to eat there and returned disappointed.
Sad to report that the food we sampled recently was very poor. We ordered a chicken lollipop, steamed rice, tadka daal, aloo Posto and fish kalia. The chicken lollipop was over-fried to the point of being inedible, the tadka daal tasted and looked like daal that had been in the fridge and subsequently heated up inadequately as it was lumpy and did not seem to have any tempered spices for flavour. In fact ‘tadka’ or ‘tarka’ in Bengal is an entirely different type of daal as far as I know that is sometimes cooked with egg or meat, but this may have been a North Indian take on it. The aloo Posto was about the only item that was moderately acceptable. However most bengali households would most likely be able to knock up a better tasting version of this. The rohu fish in the kalia had no taste at all and it tasted like it the fish had been quickly combined with a separate onion rich sauce. I feel sad that this establishment has gone downhill since we first tried the place when it opened. Our first couple of visits went very well but since then we have visited or taken away food on multiple occasions and every time it has been well below expected standards. I do not know if this particular trip was an unfortunate one off but we feel short changed by our recent trips where the food has more often than not been extremely poor.
A rare gem of a restaurant serving authentic Indian cuisines especially Calcutta style biriyani(with the quintessential Aloo & Dim of course !& kathi rolls. The taste was nothing less than super delicious. Everything was well taken care of including the hygiene in serving the food and the ambience. I would recommend ordering the gajar halwa for dessert and for the cherry on the top you have the hostess - Pritha Mukherjees welcoming smile.Must try-Kochuri-aloo dumFish FryMutton BiryaniGajar Halwa
Its one of the best Indian restaurants that I have been to hands down. The food is extremely authentic, delicious but not heavy or greasy. Definitely try their mutton biriyani, mutton kosha; if youre a fish lover go for Mustard fish, fish Kalia and also the starter fish cutlet is delicious. And prices are really affordable as well.
We had a family function at this place, the owner and staff were very nice and accomodating. The food was delicious and service was on point. They also let us decorate the place according to our needs and let us have our own menu for the event. Overall highly recommended, its very nice restaurant.
Have you ever eaten leather? NO!!! Then try the paneer(cheeseserved at this place. It was the most disgusting thing I have ever tasted. And the apathy of the manageress when I complained was shocking. Spoilt the rest of an average meal.
There is a sense of nostalgia that kicks in at different points in the year and thats where I think this place becomes a go-to, irrespective of a very low value for money experience. They get some of the dishes right - but the portion size isnt great and the service is quite amateurish. The restaurant itself is quite claustrophobic so Ive always preferred to sit outside. The danger is - they tend to forget about you!
One of the best options for Bengali food in London. You can expect authentic Bengali flavours of Sorshe and Posto. We also liked the North Indian style Amritsari Fish tikka & Delhi wala butter chicken. Overall must try place.
Decided to take home their Kolkata mutton biryani. I have had some really good Kolkata biryani back in India so I was expecting great things; unfortunately it was very disappointing. I know that Kolkata mutton biryani is served with potato and the menu mentions its served with potatoes & egg but no sign of em in mine. Mutton itself lacked taste and overall was just average. Read a few good reviews of this place but I guess things have changed.
Finally found a "true flavour of Kolkata" in London. Ordered Veg cutlet, fish cutlet, paturi, kolkata biryani, mutton kosa, rosogolla payesh and malpua rabri. Each one of those dishes were splendid and mouth watering. There are multiple Bengali restaurants you may find in London, but none of those can match the true Indian Bengali essence that Posto can deliver. To curb my Bengali dishes cravings, surely this is my go to place now on.
Great food. Helpful staff. We tried out several dishes and every dish is a hit. Being the only Indian Bengali Restaurant, they serve quality ethnic dishes. If you are in London and looking for some unique flavors, try this restaurant. Also, do ask the staff for house specials.Would highly recommend.‐---------------‐Updated------------------They kept on increasing their level.Food was amazing and they customise according to your choice as well.Must try the Fish Fry and the Biryani here.
Authentic Kolkata food, loved every bit of it!
Amazing experience. Best Indian food in London so far. Authentic.Food taste awesome. Not pricey. Great service. Good ambience.Highly recommend.
Horrible food. The Kolkata chicken Biryani was bland and the chicken wasnt even tender. The dish didnt taste like Biryani at all. It barely had any potatoes in it. The Bengali fish curry didnt even taste like an authentic Bengali dish. The plates were dirty and so was the cutlery. This restaurant hasnt got the class and the sophistication which it should. Absolutely horrible food! This restaurant has nothing to do with Kolkata! Its just a money making entity!
Rotten food and Worst Owner with False PromisesI have been looking forward to Posto for a while. With much anticipation I arrived and order a takeaway ◇Kathal Biryani ◇Fish fry ◇Mustard fish ◇Egg PostoThe egg posto had gone off. It was not edible and it stink so much I had to throw the entire box in the bin. The mustard fish had no salt at all and tasted very bitter. When I called and spoke to Pritha the owner she very kindly apologised and said would give a refund. She asked me to message my bank details. No refund was given and even she stopped responding to my messages. Its is sad and unacceptable as I had known Pritha from the days when she provided takeaway service and was very happy to know that she now owns a Bengali resturant. With a heavy heart I say thay you have provided horrible food with shameful service Pritha!I will also log a complain with the food department for serving rotten food.
Amazing food especially the Bengali dishes which are very delicious and authentic. We ordered the Kolkata Muttln Biryani, mutton kosha and fish kalia- definitely coming back for more. Finally a restaurant serving true bengali dishes in London ❤️
The only place which I have come across in London that serves authentic Bengali food. We ordered kababs, aloo posto, shorshe maach, thali and several other items. Every item was delicious. Couldnt find a single fault. Shall definitely go back whenever I start missing Bengali food.
Took away lamb biryani and Fish Kalia on the route back home. I have been a customer before and had enjoyed some of their dishes last year. Biryani had no flavours, no salt ( yes no salt!!and meat pieces looked frozen and totally out of sorts. Rui fish kalia was so-so. All in all, spoilt my experience as I was expecting a decent meal. Just adding rose and kewra water to rice doesnt make it a Kolkata biryani. My quest for good Kolkata food still continues...
One of the very few Indian restaurants in London serving East Indian Bengali cuisine (not Bangladeshi). The menu has some Kolkata specialities like chilly chicken dry, peas kochuri with aloor dom, fish fry etc. The prices are reasonable and the taste is good as well.Improvement area:1. The chairs and table couldve been more clean.2. Chilly chicken dry shouldve been little more dry.
I wouldnt recommend, unfortunately. The chips were served cold and had to be sent back. The chicken in the butter chicken was pinkish on the middle, I cut one open and showed them and they deducted it from the bill. One other dish was served by mistake instead of what we ordered. Food didnt all come out at the same time.In terms of the restaurant itself, it felt slightly grubby.
Absolutely terrific. Very authentic food from Calcutta. The mustard fish, nalli and the mutton biryani are just incredible. The service is nice, the waiting staff are attentive, the portion sizes are adequate and the dishes are reasonably priced. Overall great value.Although we booked in advanced for a Mothers Day lunch, the restaurant was not very crowded. A true hidden gem. Would certainly go there again and would recommend it to anyone who likes authentic regional Indian food.
Expected a lot more- Mustard fish was yellow in colour - that’s closest to mustard it got. Fish cutlets- very dry and tasted refried. About everything else we had - less said the better. We spent Sunday afternoon around 1 PM till 3:30 PM- the restaurant had three tables occupied including us- I think that says all. Wouldn’t go again- sadly.
This is truly the best, Indian as well as Bengali restaurant in London!!! I am not exaggerating.Must try-Lamb koshaFish Paturi (smoked fish wrapped in banana leaves)Aloo postoFish cutletsHowever, the location is a very unfortunate disadvantage to this brilliant find.Had they been based at a more central location like Covent Garden or Tooting, they would not have been able to control the crowd. I would love to visit again and again but distance becomes a barrier.
We went Posto for our Christmas eve dinner on 24th December 2021, We had a horrible experience didn’t expect that as a reputable restaurant posto serve that kind of unhygienic food. we ordered famous Fish Cutlet that came over cooked and fish definitely look old not fresh pieces. There after main we ordered Kolkata mutton biriyani & Nalli Gosht, food they serve feel not too fresh but because of reputable restaurant we ate the food with out complain. But It was horrible next day morning we both having food poisoning symptoms as started vomiting & Diarrhoea whole day, wast out Christmas day at bed with food poisoning. Understand as reputable restaurant supply unhygienic food and definitely out of date meat gave it to us. That our out of exception. I will never go this kind of restaurant again as I advice my friends and family member too. General people i will advice be careful- if reputable restaurant like this serve this kind of unhygienic food- that’s very horrible and unbelievable. Hopefully this never happened to their people. Thank you.
Amazing food with authentic Bengali taste. We ordered a variety of dishes, all of which were fantastic. The staff were lovely and were very accommodating to us even though we arrived quite late. We would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for typical Kolkata cuisine (felt like we were back home). It would be great if another branch opened up in the north of England.
Visited the place for the second time after the pandemic. Authentic taste of the Bengali cuisines, cannot comment on the full menu as I havent tried other dishes. Lovely host and amazing taste. Only losing a star as I think the portion sizes can be a bit better for the price.Highly recommended if you are looking for original and authentic Bengali flavours.
A "Bangali" (eng. Bengalifrom Calcutta living in London/Europe has only one "daabi" (eng. Demand- Good, Ghoroa (eng. homelyBangali food. Pritha (the owner of Postohas done a marvelous job in maintaining the authenticity of our culture via her dishes. You will find Aloo Posto & Maacher Kalia to Mutton Kosha & of course the amazing fish fry with Kasundi. I was literally reminded of my mothers home cooked Cholar Dal (a kind of lentils). If you stay in London, this should be your favourite place to eat & if you are visiting here, do not miss the dinner adda here.
We recently been to Posto.I am big fan to simple Bengali food, though attempt is good... would prefer typical recipes than offering a lot of options. It dilutes the unique of the place.
Absolutely delicious authentic Bengali food (coming from a Bengali guy). Closest to the taste I could relate back from Kolkata. Still some areas to improve taste wise in some dishes but much better than any typical Indian/ Bengali restaurant. Highly recommended for those seeking to try authentic Indian food from the Bengal region.
If I had to describe it in one phrass: authentic Indian. The culture, the food, the staff are all 5 class. Theres a fine mix of India in the UK in this restaurant. And the food.... well, its best if you try it yourself to be honest. For anyone looking for that genuinely spicy meal that really hits the tastebuds, this is the place for you. And for anyone whos not quite into spicy things, dont worry, theyve got you covered 😅. Finally, the staff are truly one of the best Ive seen in the Rayners Layne area. Not only are they friendly, but especially proactive. The only negative thing that struck me is the very subtle hint of a slight lack of organization when it came to bookings - sometimes it might take a little longer than youd expect to enjoy your meals.Overall, a fine place to visit AND order from.
I really liked this place. The service was exceptional. My favourite dish was the daal makhni (or black daal). Close to one of the best I have had. This place is a high 4. My friends enjoyed the restaurant as well.We ordered quite a lot. There was a large party and our group in the restaurant. The staff were so accommodating it was almost like being at home. They made recommendations and suggestions and were even willing for us to order items off menu. We had the chilli paneer, the peas kachori (peas puri and potato curry), jackfruit curry, aubergine curry, daal makhni and puri.My only complaint was that their online menu did not match the menu in the restuarant. In particular mogo was not available.Definitely worth a visit!
Just a few lines to thank you so much for the wonderful experiences I had on both the occasions I visited your restaurant. Extremely high standard of cuisine, coupled with great cozy and warm restaurant atmosphere. Very courteous and professional staff. Enjoyed thoroughly. Your welcoming and affectionate nature just made my days. I would love to visit Posto again in near future.
Posto was recommended by friends and it didn’t disappoint me. Home-style cooking, with authentic Bengali dishes from Kolkata offered on the back of the menu card. We tried the fish cakes, prawns fry and chilly chicken for starters. Then came Bengali fish curry, kosha mangsho, bhindi aalu posto (ofcourse!with some naans & Kolkata mutton Biryani. Spices were well adjusted and portions were good. For desserts we shared a Malpua with rabdi, which tasted good but lacked presentation. Overall a simple restaurant with minimalistic design, good service and no fancy stuff. Would visit again for some simple Indian food.
I have PhD in Kolkata Biriyani and have travelled to more than 55 countries to find the best. I had a couple of recommendations about Kolkata Biriyani in London until last Evening. Now my only Recommendation is - Posto. Without a Doubt.Photo Courtesy: Paramita Roy
Wow! Posto showed me that Indian food can be done so differently.Ive never like the look or taste of beetroot, yet I kept going back for more of their tasty beetroot balls. If you are looking for an Indian cuisine that is different and a new taste then look no further.Great service and friendly atmosphere. We held an event with 27 people & their team were able to handle us. Im going to definitely recommended this restaurant to my friends and family.
£8 for 4 tables spoons of biryani at Ealing Broadway Durga Puja, is simply not worth it. Good effort in terms of recreating the smell and taste of Kolkata biryani but frankly it’s more of a tease than a fulfilling experience. I don’t think I’ll be rushing to the restaurant if I’m hungry.@Posto, the moment profit margins become more important than the passion for , the countdown begins. This was your opportunity to promote your brand, you’ve messed up!
We immediately fell in love with the flavours. We literally cant stop talking about the Peshwari Naan and Shahi Paneer.Service was fantastic and the food was served swiftly. Consideration was paid to the fact we were carrying a newborn and the owner even kindly handed over a childrens book to my toddler whilst we waited for mains.I love that theres a bookshelf. So quaint! We dont often return to a restaurant since we like to eat around but I can definitely say we will be returning again and again to Posto.
Great place to have authentic Bengali cuisines of Kolkata. Nice hospitality, good portions, good ambience. Will go back again.
Authentic Indian food with a different style and taste. Worth a visit. Has takeaway services as well. Would recommend. However some plates were dirty and the food took a while to come out but they made up for it with complementary appetisers which made up for it.
