Imposant bridge remembering the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco must see place in Lisbon

We sailed underneath this beautiful bridge. We searched for a sailing tour, ended up with Sailing with Nigel, great experience.

Interesting experience to see what went into the construction of this giant feat of engineering. Unfortunately we were rushed around by some of the staff so didnt get a proper chance to view it all.

Fabulous views across Lisbon

In rush hour it is very busy so avoid typical rush hours. After 10 am til 4pm traffic moves quickly and you can be in Lisbon or Costa in 20 mins

Amazing watching the cruise ship going under the bridge, barely any space between the top of the ship and the bottom of the bridge!

Despite it’s an impressive bridge, similar to the one in SF, USA, this one is VERY noisy!! Can’t imagine having to live here with that noise 😖I hope the city of Lisbon will do something about it, for the people of Lisbon (not for me, I’m only here for a few days). Never been in a city with such a level of noise, around that bridge.Noise is a factor in life that is underestimated almost always and a source of many discomforts…

You get a great view of this if youre travelling to Lisbon on a cruise ship, as they pass directly underneath it.

Its better to see from the side, but if you will decide to drive thru than consider also possible traffic jams. Other side of the Lisbon has also a statue of Jesus.

The bridge was built by the same folks who built a suspiciously similar looking one in San Francisco. Supposedly, both of them are meant to sustain major earthquakes. I dont think pedestrian traffic is allowed. It costs a few euros to cross it.

Viewing the April 25th Bridge from the heart of Lisbon’s waterfront area was a real treat, especially as the sun rose early in the crisp, summer morning. Immediately upon seeing it, I drew comparisons to its “cousin” across the pond, the Golden Gate Bridge—not to start a competition, but this one sure makes its mark. The extent and progression of human design and engineering capabilities…man. Remarkable.Driving across the bridge or not, it’s a must to view this marvel of design when in Lisbon.

It was very nice to drive over at night. And very pleasant looking at it during the day. Well, I was more impressed with the bridge in Porto. (Says my mom)

This a huge bridge that is actually similar to the Golden gate bridge in San Francisco. In fact I was told it built by the same Architect. Great view.

An absolutely fabulous information centre and experience of the magnificent engineering of this historically significant bridge over the River Tagus. A must visit for only 5 euros per adult and 3.5 for children with free parking and superb value souvenirs 😀

Lisbon is a beautiful city with so much history. We truly loved our visit.

Impossible not to compare with the Golden Gate in San Francisco, but it is not crossable on foot like the Golden Gate. It rather looks more similar actually to the Oakland bridge but with red paint.

Yes, you cant ignore the similarity with the famous SF bridge - huge span with two huge pillars, very high to let big ships pass under and pretty long connecting Lisbon and its southern suburb of Almada. Also the color is similar - this one little darker red than SFs orange.The bridge dates back to 20c 60s, being renamed after the Revolution overthrowing Salazar dictators regime.While this was my third time in Lisbon, it was the first time I drove over it when heading towards the Cristo Rei statue - no tolls southbound, but tolls northbound when returning to Lisbon.

That bridge remains me of the Golden Gate Bridge of San Francisco.It seems almost unrealistic when you stand in front of it. Really breathtaking and simply huge.A really impressive building and a must seen in Lisboa.

I run this year Half Marathon in Lisbon and the start was in this bridge. I should say thay i didnt expect to be this huge,its very well designed and constructed. The views on top of it where amazing

Beautiful bridge. It reminds San Francisco bridge in California, but much longer. Its very accessible and if you want to experience the best view, then take a walk or a better scooter ride along the Tagus river.

Boat cruise under the 25th of April bridge and other coastal monument with yellow bus tours. Highly recommended

Nice bridge, quite similar to an other bridge in the US 😉Unfortunately it is quite loud, the asphalt seems to be a loud one.

Its a historical beautiful bridge

It does look a bit like the San Francisco Bridge. It is not worth the ticket money to enter to see the inside but if you have the Lisbon card you can visit it for free. It is very close together with some other monuments so you could combine it.

I’m from the SF Bay, and the feeling I get driving across this bridge into Lisbon is a lot like driving across the Golden Gate bridge into San Francisco. Except you’ve got both San Francisco and Rio de Janeiro in your experience because you have the statue of Jesus Christ overlooking the whole city to your right as you have the adrenaline of driving across that bridge over the river into the city it’s fabulous! My husband, a civil engineer and bridge man, loved the bridge. Similar to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California. Interesting history of the bridge. Well worth the visit. Take a trip to the top and catch a gorgeous view. Very friendly and helpful staff.

Very interesting construction! There is no actual tarmac, but the perforated surface so you can see water down through!

Do you use this bridge to go and return from work? Not the nicest place with frequent traffic jams due to the only 3 lanes per side. Do you see the bridge from the side walks or boat trips? Definitely pretty and the design is similar to the Golden Gate bridge in San Francisco

Smaller brother of famous Golden Gate, largest suspension bridge I have seen. It is one of the dominants of Lisbon you will not miss because it is visible from many spots across the city. Movement of traffic makes loud buzzing sound which reminds bee hive.

The 25 de Abril Bridge is based in part on two San Francisco Bay Area bridges. Its paint is the same International Orange color as the famous Golden Gate Bridge, and its design is similar to that of the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge. Both the Bay Bridge and the 25 de Abril Bridge were built by the same company.The American Society of Civil Engineers says: "Like its sister bridge, the SFOBB in San Francisco, the Tagus River Bridge is located in an area with a long history of earthquakes" and seismic data had to be taken into account in its construction. Another sister bridge is the Forth Road Bridge in Edinburgh.Upon completion, the bridge had the longest suspended span and the longest main span in Continental Europe, the worlds longest continuous truss, and the worlds deepest bridge foundation. It was the fifth-largest suspension bridge in the world, and the largest outside the US. Today it is the 43th largest suspension bridge in the world.

MUST SEE when you come to Lisbon. Beautiful bridge. Went there for the sunset, BEAUTIFUL! Can’t imagine how it looks with the sunrise. Really nice to take a walk along the water. 100% Recommend. Reminds me of the Golden Gate Bridge 🌉

3 years working for Cunard sailing the world and this is the most beautiful sailaway there is. The River Tagus shimmers silvery pink as the ship glides through the calm water as the bridge floats above in all its magnificence. Beautiful.

From this angle, you can see the most spectacular views of the whole city, exciting experience! you cant miss it, but its hard to find a way to get this location, most people they drive car to this attraction, but I walked there.

The 25 de Abril Bridge (Portuguese: Ponte 25 de Abril, 25th of April Bridge, Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈpõt(ɨˈvĩt i ˈsĩku ðɨ ɐˈβɾiɫ]is a suspension bridge connecting the city of Lisbon, capital of Portugal, to the municipality of Almada on the left (southbank of the Tagus river. It was inaugurated on August 6, 1966. It is often compared to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, US, because they are both suspension bridges of similar color. It was built by the American Bridge Company which constructed the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge, but not the Golden Gate. With a total length of 2,277 metres (7,470 ft), it is the 38th largest suspension bridge in the world. The upper deck carries six car lanes, while the lower deck carries a double track railway electrified at 25 kV AC; the train platform was added in 1999. From 1966–1974, the bridge was named Salazar Bridge (Ponte Salazarin honor of Portuguese Prime Minister António de Oliveira Salazar, who ordered its construction. As of 2006 a daily average of 150,000 cars cross the bridge, including 7,000 on the peak hour. Rail traffic is also heavy, with a daily average of 157 trains. One of the first things you see as the plane lands is this bridge. Its almost visible from every miradouro and along the main coast of Lisbon. Beautiful. You can cross it by car, bus or train but we actually went to the other coast by boat so never actually crossed it.

Beautiful suspension bridge that looks almost identical to the Golden Gate bridge which is interesting because the same bridge company that built the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, CA built this bridge in Lisbbon.

Ponte 25 de Abril is a very impressive looking bridge spanning the River Tagus in Lisbon. It very similar to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco due to the design and colour, as both the bridges are suspension bridges and red.With a total length over 2.2 km, its an impressive feat of engineering and hard to appreciate until you see it in person.

Pilar 7 has an elevator to learn the history of the bridge, get a close up view of the cables that suspend the bridge, and get a view of Lisbon and the South shore from road level of the bridge. There is a glass floored platform if you are not afraid of heights.

Monumental structure that spans the River Regus linking Lisbon with the south side of the river. You can cross by rail, on the lower deck, or by motor vehicle, on the upper deck. Fantastic views from the bridge, including a unique aspect of the Cristo Rei. Recommended.
