Picture Lake Campground - in Petersburg, United States
Ignore any bad review you see about this place. I live here long term, and the staff are always friendly, the property is always maintained, the pool is always clean and ready, and the latrines are extremely clean. Great place to stay short, or long term!
It was a nice place to stop. Alot of long term campers, so was happy to be able to get a spot for a couple of days. Big lake. Enjoyed it. Staff was friendly and nice.
They made special accommodations to please us as a new client. Our rig required additional space, so they allowed us to stay on a pull through site the entire time. Beware of neighboring drag race track.
I had such an enjoyable stay at Picture Lake Campground — especially with the help of Michelle! She was super sweet and was able to provide the best care! I felt right at home.
So we were at this campground July 29, 2022 through August 1 I complained after the 1st night because the water pressure was really bad and was told there’s over 200 sites and basically that’s the way it is around there. The grass was pretty much high everywhere you went except a couple places that were mowed and the basketball courts the picnic areas the volleyball court were all overgrown and most campsites as well. for a good Sam campground I was really disappointed. Even the garbage can upfront haven’t been emptied and was overflowing the whole three nights we were there. I would not recommend this campground at all. And good Sam should take a look at this place and take them off their list.
When driving in this is really nice. Office/pool/ lake area very pretty. Pull thru site was blacktop, long & level. This is where the good part ends. This is a pretty large campground. It only has 1 shower/ toilet house w/ 5 stalls & 4 showers & located where if you’re in front of the park…long walk. Also only 2 dumpsters way in the back of the park (not on way out& OVERFLOWING & smelly with flies everywhere. Too bad these 2 things make this park less than desirable.
Excellent staff, great campground. We’re new to RV life and Michelle in the front office was SO kind and patient. She walked us through all the steps for step up and use. There were plenty of sites for RVs, tents and more. There’s a playground and pool as well as fishing spots. They have tiny cabins on site and storage sheds to rent for long term guests. The site also has a convenience store on location for those things you forgot.
This place is great, everyone is so nice, the place is kept clean
My husband rented a cabin for our anniversary. The worst mistake he ever made. The cabin is horrible. The only good thing I have to say about that cabin is that the refrigerator works damn good. The stove was dirty, the pans were burnt up. The AC has no vents for the other EXTRA small bedrooms. The Ancient wall paper has been there since the place been there. It has ripped holes i. The wall paper. The outside if the cabin is an eye sore. It needs to be pressure washed. All the mole on the outside of the cabin its not good.. The driveway, well its not driveway, you just drive up on the grasss/yard which is very unlevel. The owners needs to get up off their behind and Simply clean the place or hire a professional cleaning service to come and cleaned them cabins. OIwill Never stay there again!
I would stay at a Walmart parking lot before staying here again. Roads are NOT paved have big holes, very undeveloped sites , weeds everywhere and they dont cut the grass. The biggest issue is the nice big pool is "open to the public " you cant even get near it on the weekends!!
Great place but only down side was booking a spot then being moved 3 times. We booked spot 7 and was moved numerous times and wasnt even called .. Our group literally booked a whole row and they kept moving us all around and made a week of drama for no known reason then lied why.. We had fun talking around the camp fire about all the different stories we all were told... You can do better! 🤷♂️
Replying to CG: call it what you want but it was addressed and you talked to our friends like they were kids. "We will see" we all know that that means. You told ME we were side by side when we booked and you switched our sites or flat out lied. Only you know which. Water under the bridge but unscrupulous no matter how you spin it.Edit: I forgot to mention that the sites, atleast the ones we were on, are very unlevel. You will need blocking as our auto level had our wheels off the ground and wheel chocks to keep your camper out of the lake. Dont rely on your X-Chocks.The staff we encountered were very friendly and helpful. There are a lot of long term sites that could have been better kept and though it is a bit of a turn off we saw no reason for alarm. The lake is huge and full of fish. The campsites were extremely narrow. Our neighbors rug was actually touching our sewer connection; however our site was extremely long. We fit our truck and 40 5th wheel and had room for another truck and trailer behind us. The sewer hookup was standard and low enough to drain as it should even for a travel trailer. We have an extensive water filter system so I really cant comment on the water quality but we used it without trouble and the pressure was ample. The campground is nothing to write home about but nothing to be afraid of. You cannot find a more convenient place to Virginia Motorsports Park as it is just across the lake. That does come with a noise level that many have commented on but it did not disturb us and really was just background noise. It is also very convenient to I85 and not far from I95. Our only complaint is that when I called, I asked if they had two sites side by side for us and our friends and were assured they had two side by side. Theres no mistaking the question or the answer. They arrived first and realized we were not going to fit next to them. They discussed this with the staff and were told the adjacent sites were booked. When they explained the phone discussion, as they were sitting with us when we booked both sites, and asked about being moved they were told "we will see". The camper on one side of us was about the same size as theirs and they could have easily been switched. Somebody was obviously booked after us into the spot we were assured on the phone. I hate to think they blatantly lied to us but either way it causes me to question their integrity. We camp together a lot and this is the first time we were assured we would be side by side and were not upon arrival. We would probably stay here again if we had not been mislead or bait and switched, whichever the case was.
I’ve enjoyed my stay here at PLCG! The staff is very welcoming and friendly, they made me feel like family and I’m honestly sad to be leaving. If one thing could be improved I would suggest upgrading the wifi. In defense of PLCG, consider the amount of devices one family has ranging from phones, tablets, laptops, smart tv/devices. Imagine the amount of data being transmitted over the free internet, now times that by the number of families staying here (whew). As a workaround I just used a personal hotspot whenever I needed internet access. That’s about it, to the staff at PLCG, I salute you!THANK YOU,V/RSite 19
They filled filled my propane bottleBut, inside the store the box of Slim Jims has .40 each, I was charged 1.50 each... not a happy camper
Being here for 3 years while stationed at Fort Lee has been one of the best decisions we made. All of the staff are extremely helpful & friendly. They’ve always been so accommodating. There is a huge sense of community here & we have made lifelong friends. We are sad to move on but the Army has other plans for us. We hope to return as soon as we can. We will truly miss out PLCG Family.
Everyone who works here has been friendly, helpful and nice! The short term spots are great--they are paved, pretty level and some of them have a water view. The pool looks nice and is right next to the water making it feel very open. When I stayed it wasnt yet open for the season. The laundry room, while functional had a truly awful smell, of mold and mildew I assume. Washing there did make my clothes smell funny but I assume thats because of the well water, as the same smell sometimes happened during my shower. I dont suppose theres much they can do about that. Unfortunately the nearest public laundromat looked even worse. Its a small rural town.
Looks like a squatters village, people have been here long enough to throw tarp lean-tos up and throw down carpets. Lock in the 4 wheel drive to get to the overflowing trash dumpsters all the way in the back. Chug-holes? Yeah theyve got big ones!!! If the oversized speed bumps up front didnt knock all your stuff off the shelves the chug-holes will finish that off. Peaceful??? Hard pass on that!!! Drag strip close enough to rattle the dust of the drapes, and they run everything from chainsaws to funny cars on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Spacious lots??? Not so much. Level parking??? For Gods sake no!!! Bring extra cinder blocks!!! One side will need to be raised 6" while your steps on the other side drag the dirt. Hook ups??? Yeah those need a lot of improvement. Price??? Ive paid less at KOAs and gotten more amenities. Theres no grocery stores or choices for restaurants around either. It aint good folks. The owner is expanding, but not making improvements.
Positive: they offer long-term stays; maintenance is very friendly. Negative: management doesn’t want to maintain the grounds; there are many “unwritten rules” that one finds out about after “breaking them;” office staff are not very friendly; grounds water smells horrible (won’t even consider drinking).
We recently rented an RV from the folks at PLC. I cant say enough about the ladies there. Thank you to all involved in our rental and thank you for making our first RV experience a great one from start to finish. !!!The unit was very clean and fridge was nice and cold for us when we picked it up.
Update: the owner Ryan made it right for my husband. Upon hearing of our site he had the office move us to a more permanent space, it is larger and has a lovely concrete pad. Now we feel appreciated and find value in our stay. Thank youWe were looking for a long term ( 2 monthsspot for my husband to use while working. Got call back from Picture Lake Campground that they have long term spot for $600 month Thought it was going to be at least a decent spot as they have semi-permanent campers there. We arrived and drove to the postage stamp smallest site we have ever utilized. Literally the person beside us has their power box and sewer hook up 2 feet from our door.
We had a great time! Very clean, everyone was very nice. The view of the track, Lake and sunsets were beautiful. Met some really nice people. The pool was clean although we didnt swim. We were there for races. The bathrooms were kept clean.. The only thing i would say negative is there was no soap in ladies room, and hand dryer didnt work all weekend. It was very quiet at night. They keep their wood in a shed so it stays dry.I would definitely return! Dont forget your fishing poles!
Made a reservation 3 weeks in advance. Called the very next day (less than 24hours...... unfortunately had to cancel ....they refuse to refund my 45 dollars. Really? Im also a member of Good Sam. Shame on you.
Nice place. Nice lake. Pool well kept. Mostly long term and really close to drag strip. Its enjoyable. We would come here again.
Had paid for full month had to leave after 1 week but couldnt get any refund. When we asked to return was told we could return but not to our same lot. They are more interested in expanding than taking care of their existing lots, roads in and out are rough. FYI, the pool is a community pool, you dont have to have a lot there to swim, just $8. Drag strip is very noisy.
Best private owned campground. The office staff, extremely welcoming and non- judgemental. Very helpful.Bathhouse very clean and updated. Great water pressure and the hot water....is hot.Yes, Picture Lake may get busy at times, but everyone is friendly. Will update as we continue to enjoy our stay here.We just loved camping here. Cant wait to go back.
Nice place. Our site was in the new area and unfortunately it rained....all night. It was extremely muddy in the morning but Im sure it will be taken care of. Great pool, nice people. Will definitely be back.
The hookups are nice, but the sites are very close together. After a half day of heavy rain that then turned very hot and clear they chose not to open the pool.Instead of the short swim we planned to end the day, we walked back to the camper in the heat. The pool is the one amenity we really valued until we could not use it. The staff people are pleasant enough, but the pool closure annoyed us greatly. It is days like this that make me think we should sell the RV and use our car to travel. We can change hotels easily, but changing campgrounds is difficult at best.
My daughter was in a softball tournament and we stayed for a long weekend. After reading several bad reviews I was skeptical about our trip. HOWEVER, we had a great time. The bathhouse was spotless, the bathroom at the pool was spotless, the staff could not have been more friendly. They cleaned the pool twice a day and the camp store had hand dipped Ice cream. :-).Yes its small, not alot of room and yes you can hear the race track if youre outside but that didnt bother us and we will be going back.Thank you for a good weekend!
Its a decent place. The only problem was our spot had huge ruts on the grass part. There was also metal pieces, and glass everywhere at our site. Apparently an rv caught on fire there, they must not have cleaned it up very well.
Super friendly place. Spacious sites, easily fit my 43 foot 5th wheel my truck and my wifes SUV with room to hang at the campfire. We loved taking the kayaks out on the lake. Couldnt have been happier. There is a racetrack over the hill that can make some daytime weekend noise. However, it doesnt run at night and I couldnt really hear it in my RV. Not to mention I could walk to the track enjoy an adult beverage or 2 watch the races and not have to Ober out. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to you.
Great 0lace not handicap friendly yet there working on it ! Making new sits and all ...staff should be more helpful to there disabled tenants or an area for just them .. but if you are looking for monthly for 600 and not picky fishing creek rv park in Enfield nc. Is great tune of open sites and only do monthly....just saying
Park is very crowded, seems like they doubled the rv spots without using any more real estate. Unlevel and muddy lots from recent adding of plumbing. Then we were told to move because the lot they originally put us in was supposedly reserved. Been here working for two weeks now, and still no one in the lot we moved from. Also, the garbage cans are overflowing, probably from recent doubling of rv lots. No walkways to shower house (have to sneak in between others rvs). Ok if youre in a bind, but not worth the money for sure.
Rented a cruise america RV with this company and they were so quick to get us out the door at pick up. They quickly explained things even though we said it was out first time renting. When returning, we had several issues during our rental and they were super uncooperative. Ryan was so rude and did not show any understanding. Will not rent from them or cruise America ever again.
We like camping here mainly because it is the midway point between us and the grandkids. Our last visit was a little disappointing which is why I gave 4 stars instead of 5. We scheduled a trip early this summer. Due to the number of people attending, I had a site for the motorhome and my son rented a cabin near my site. Two days before the trip my sons wife had a covid exposure at her hospital. To be on safe side they decide not to come because test results werent back yet. The campground would not refund his money. After numerous calls to the office the office said they would have the owner call. The owner never called. Even a credit towards the next trip would have been fine. But no reply at all was disappointing given the circumstances. We will still camp there but Im not as enthusiastic as before.
Not a bad campground if you’re in a pinch. It is tucked away in the woods and there is a big lake in the front. I didn’t like how the campsites were so close to each other for RVs and how unleveled they were. The bathhouses were not very clean or private either. This seems like a full time campground for most patrons. Definitely a lot of potential, but I don’t know if we would go back.
Second time camping here and this was my worst time. I reserved 2 camp sites side by side for me and my family and office came down and said that we only paid for a certain amount of people. Ok cool so called down to pay for remaining people. We had already put 2 tents up and was working on the 3rd one when the lady came down. Then as we was putting the last one up (with 6 already up in the view of there officesame lady came back to say we are only allowed 1 tent per site. We then went back and forth with the lady explaining that u came down when we had 3 tents out and I just paid for an additional 10 people at 6 per person. How in the hell would 14 people fit in 2 tents. Then my girl friend who happens to work for a law firm showed up and talked to the lady and try to reason. The lady then said the rules are on the website for camping. Only to find out that she didnt know there the rules and all we had to do was pay additional money per tent which would have been fine if it was explained the first time she came down and complained about the people. How u are an employee and dont know your own rules and regulations. Anyways fun night but last time we will stay here. Pricing wasnt the problem lack of knowledge of an employee was the problem. And was only 14 people staying.
Stayed here for a week. Needed to checknun early, they said no problem. Was going to be late, they said no problem we will wait for you. That was so awesome of them to do that for you. Staff is amazing! This is a nice RV park. Pool is closed due to time of year but looks like a nice pool. The picture is our view from our site. Nice to watch the sunset. Would definitely stay here again if passing through.
We needed a campgrounds close to Virginia Motorsports Park and you cant get any closer than this. The staff is very friendly and willing to help with your reservations. The campground had a nice, level spot with the hook ups in a perfect location and a roomy site. You can here the racetrack from the campground but it was not a big issue. Hopefully we will get to go back.
Stopped here for one night on our way to Myrtle Beach. Good location as it is right off the highway. Average RV park - pool and some basketball courts. There is a playground but it doesn’t seem too stable. Some sites were really close to the garbage area which was over flowing and needed to be emptied. Staff are friendly and accommodating.
Decent campground. Good place to stay of youre watching the races. Cabins are smallish - bed in the master bedroom barely fits in the room. The other bedroom is basically a closet with bunk beds. There is a hide-a-bed in the living room with a very thin mattress. Be sure to bring your own sheets, towels, pillows, soap, and shampoo. Only cabins 3-5 get any shade at all. The rest are basically ovens during sunny days.
Picture Lake Campground is a nice campground. Has a beautiful lake, which unfortunately you cant swim or let your dogs play in the lake. Are camping group spent the weekend there and the owner of the campground went out of his way to make us feel welcome. They allowed us to use the pavilion for our potluck. They went out of their way to provide anything we needed. This campground does have a lot of seasonal camping sites. So even though they have quite a few sites most of them are taken up with seasonal campers. All in all we enjoyed our stay and if were in the Petersburg, VA area we would love to stay there again.
We have been here for a little over a month, working in the area. I dont agree with the bad reviews on here.Staff is super friendly and accommodating. The lake is beautiful and neighbors are quiet and friendly. There was just a big race event, across the lake, this weekend. The place was packed to the gills anywhere they could get squeezed in. But, you wouldnt know it because everyone was so quiet and respectful. The cars quit racing in the late afternoon, no races at night. There was an event a couple of weeks ago where they raced til about 10 or 11 pm. But not bad.We plan on staying the rest of the summer here.
We stayed at Picture Lake for six months. Our time there was amazing, the staff is friendly and helpful. Being new to RV life I must have asked Harold a million questions and he was always able to offer a solution. The majority of the full time residents are great too, a very social campground with families barbecuing and throwing corn hole every weekend. There is a large pool that can accommodate the entire campground and the owners continue to make improvements. Some lots are small and unpaved like the one we stayed in, so make sure you look at it before you pull in. In all Picture Lake was a great, affordable and memorable. If I find my way back to the Petersburg area I will stay there again.
Campground was nice, lake is very scenic. Owners and staff were extremely welcoming and friendly. People were all friendly too. Bathrooms appeared clean but smelled awful, and were not cleaned every day. The cleaners used to clean the bathrooms are so strong and awful smelling they make it worse and you can literally smell the cleaners as soon as you get within 30 feet of the entrance. I imagine this is to try and cover up the awful smell in there, they really need to change the cleaners, fix the sewage issue and install some automatic air fresheners. The water at our site #8 did not work at all and most of the spickets are lever with the dirt or below a little making it hard to connect. The WIFI is almost non existent, was very frustrating could not even check a email most times. This could be easily fixed with the installation of some repeaters, prob a $500 fix for the whole park. Fire wood is a $1 a piece. That is just ridiculous. Pool is very nice but a lot of people from the local area are allowed to use it and always very busy. While we were there a teenage girl was found murdered a mile away at the carwash down the street. We still had a great time and because of the welcoming and friendliness they still get 5 stars. I should also note that I was told there are new owners, very new so it may take them some time to address all of the issues they came upon. I hope they fix the bathrooms and WIFI though, they are important. Also I read in other reviews there was trash all over the dumpster area we stayed 8 days and it was always neat and clean.
Amazing campground and amazing staff! We travel for my husbands work and this has been by far our favorite place yet! There are some party animals but thats usually only Saturday and not the campgrounds fault! Id recommend this place to anyone! The staff works SOOO HARD TO KEEP THIS PLACE LOOKING GOOD! The permanent people do kinda let their lots look run down, cluttered and trashed but everyone here is nice.
Not so great on my part. The campground had a nice setting to it, theres a pool, bathhouse and laundry facility. I honestly feel like its too over priced. They dont warn you that there isnt any sewer connection lots available so we got stuck to where they pump out our gray and water tank three times a week. The staff has been friendly but Ive encountered with some rude ones. They sound like theyre so annoyed or something.
We enjoyed ourselves tremendously! Dina the front staff person and Brenda were both very friendly, accomodating and professional. The grounds were clean and the pool was nice. The bathhouse was also very clean. A neighbor even helped us get our fire started:). There was no place for hiking or seclusion, but the lake was lovely.
It is nice for a stop over maybe for a few nights. Pool is beautiful, laundry room very clean, but the site we had was full of tree roots and not level at all. More full term sites than actual vacation, temporary sites. Bathrooms were very clean and air conditioned.
Picture Lake is an awesome campground! The owners take pride in the campground and are always helpful. The pool is fantastic, the facilities are newly renovated and the people there have a real sense of community. Its a great place for kids to run around, and people are very friendly. The skydivers from Virginia Skydiver Center will sometimes swoop the pond on Sat at sunset, which adds to the campground entertainment. They have put new cabins in with full kitchens and baths, for those that dont want to tent-it, or bring a trailer. Overall, this is a Great Campground!
Picture lake campground was one of the cleanest camp sites I have ever stayed at, especially for the low price we paid! They had a huge blue pool overlooking the beautiful lake right beside the campground, definitely one of the prettiest sites Ive seen In a while. Everyone was very welcoming from the moment we walked in the campground. Even the bath house was very clean and the store at the front came in handy when we forgot our marshmallows back home. They also had a laundry room for you to use which my family definitely needed! I saw many folks go to the store to get propane and the cute worker even helped them fill their tanks! I also saw some construction going on around the campground and had to ask the owner the reason for them. When I spoke to the small business owner, Ryan Porter, he explained to me that these were upgradesfor renovating parts of the campground to benefit all the campers I give props to the owner, Ryan Porter, for running such a welcoming and clean campground. I hope we will eventually be able to return to Picture Lake at make some more awesome memories! I would recommend this place to other families, travelers, and anyone who wants to have a good time!
